  • Great spot for lunch

We had lunch at Le Cigare Volant early in the afternoon - not yet busy. Service was good to very good (a bit of obnoxious upsell). The menu is made up of small plates with options that worked for us as vegetarians. The selection is small - maybe eight to ten choices. However, everything was outstanding. The smoked potatoes were incredible (although served in an inconvenient deep cup with the aioli at the bottom), the pumpin soup was light and fresh (not the usual descriptors for such a soup), the flatbread was incredibly flavorful and crisp, the brussel sprouts were like desert (sweet and rich). We also had several great wines by the glass, with guidance from the waiter. They have a spectacular beer list, too. Noisy even when not busy.

Lunch was awesome, but the tasting was deplorable. The server ignored us even though we had a reservation for 6. We finally walked out after tasting the chardonnay which was mediocre. I realize now the $20 I left was way over the top for what we received.

The four of us split 2 appetizers- the Brussels sprouts and the smoked fingerling potatoes. We all had the rib eye steaks and split two desserts. In the end, everything was delicious, a three hundred dollar bill (which did include an $80 bottle of wine), and we were still hungry.

The food was delicious, although I had to ask multiple questions about the menu. It's rather hard to understand exactly what you're getting! The Smoked Garlic Cream-Braised Ricotta, Chartreuse Spinach, Wild Rice was wonderful. Also enjoyed: Smoked Fingerling Potato – “Potted” with Chives Flatbread – Braised Winter Vegetables with Brie & Candied Walnuts Not so good was: Portobello Mushroom Brioche Buns w/ Herb Yogurt It was a really enjoyable experience and I'm ever so sad that they are closing at the end of the year.

Had not been here in a couple of years. The new chef continues the original standard of high quality food. We ordered a number of small dishes for lunch. Everything was great with the exception of the pumpkin soup, which was quite bland and flat. The "flat bread" options turn out to be something like pizza, yummy!

The food was fabulous and the wines were paired so well. Right on Ryan, Nathaniel & Randall! I took my husband there for his birthday and it was a meal we will remember for a very long time. Artistic, creative, and delicious. We went back the next day to buy some of the wines we tasted from the pairing menu. We're foodies that love to cook and are not easily wowed; this gets 5 stars.

Cigar Volante is establishing itself as one of the finest restaurants in Santa Cruz. With it's unique interior decor, creative dishes and warm welcoming ambiance, they have a winning combination. We found it refreshing to have a nice but not confusingly extensive amount of choices on the menu. Simple and straighforward, it allows for time to enjoy food and company in equal measure.

You don't have to be a foodie to eat here, but if you are, you'll enjoy the amazing attention to detail in presentation, as well as genuinely surprising, but thoughtful blending of flavors with each dish. We were seated in one of the three semi-private rooms which were surrounded by wine cask stays and containing hand-crafted tables with interesting designs—ours had a design based on the Fibbonachi sequence—and this made from a nice feeling of privacy for our group while still being part of the rest of the restaurant with its very pleasing lighting and fascinating details. The wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive and very patiently and enthusiastically explained the origin of the food as well as the interesting processes employe

Excellent food & very interesting options. The soup we had was out of this world...a pumpkin soup w/ a slice of ginger-type bread in it along w/ a small scoop of semi-sweet pumpkin ice cream on top and that combination of flavors was incredible. My salmon meal was outstanding & the red wine reduction sauce that went w/ it was delicious. Everything was superb and now we just need to find another night to go back. Very pleasant and knowledgeable waitress helped us w/ decisions on what to pick. Top notch all the way.

This was my second visit to Le Cigare Volant. I came back because I enjoyed the food so much the first time. Because of these expectations, I was disappointed with the overall dining experience this time around. It seemed to me that the chef was trying a bit too hard to be "different" or "innovative" at the overall expense of the dining experience. The chef certainly has talent, but I think he lost his focus a bit. I would definitely go back again based on my first experience.

it's changed. we've eaten there a number of times and took friends who drove from Los Gatos. (once we went and brought a large group from Los Altos and we had a wonderful meal) we were very disappointed. the prices are ridiculous. the food was good , portions TINY, and it was all oh so precious and pretentious. it used to be a place where the cuisine was innovative and hearty and satisfying. we will not go again.

The restaurant kept all the good interior items from its previous iteration, (Cellar Door), the unique lighting and the wine barrel booths, quasi-industiral vibe, but got rid of the "one long and too-wide table" seating arrangement. The food is inspired, fresh, and the highest quality. The small plates are very small, just a few bites, but exquisitely flavored. Plates are medium sized. Service was excellent, attentive, and the sommelier is very knowledgable and helpful.

We were lucky enough to sit in one of the beautiful and very private booths in the tasting room/bar area. The food was beautifully presented but slightly lacking in flavor. The pumpkin soup contained very sour pieces of lemon ruining the subtle pumpkin flavor and overpowering the spice of the gingerbread and ice cream. The rock cod filet was oversalted on the skin side and rather tasteless on the other, the rice cakes were very small (one large on would have been better)and the smoked mushroom dashi was also lacking flavor. The brioche beignets were delicious!

next time, I'd sit at the counter where I could watch the chefs in action. I felt the atmosphere at the tables was a little too industrial for me - use of metal tables, chairs, high ceilings, relatively dark. While the food was very good and creative, the timing on the service was off. We received our first course well before the wine arrived then had barely finished our appetizer before the main course was served. Generally we are finishing up our wine with our main course but in this case still had 1/2 the bottle left which had been decanted from the bottle so we could not take it with us. There was also a lot of reaching across the table to pour or take away plates although we had plenty of room around the table for that purpose.

We had an excellent time from start to finish. The squash in mushroom broth surprised us with its delicious complexity; the duck mole with the enchilladas was tasty. The raked greens delighted us with its beauty and amazing flavor. We really enjoyed the wine pairings--especially the BDV Moscato Frizzante. We sat at the counter, and the staff engaged with us--giving us the inside scoop on the food.

Our first visit to Le Cigare Volant; the food was very good and many dishes had drama (such as dry ice for 'smoke'). I found that the main courses were served more warmish rather than hot; you can eat them right away, but, they cool quickly (I'd give 4 stars if the food was hot.) Had the sommelier surprise pick our wine pairings; $23.50 for a glass of wine.... really! We were surprised.... Overall, a good experience and good food; just stick to the small plates and order your own wine (or ask the price!). BTW, the 'Potted Smoked Fingerling Potatoes' are a must have!

This is our second time dining at Le Cigare Volant. We love it here! Each time we have been here, we have left our dining fate in the hands of our knowledgeable server - we let her choose all of our apps food and wine pairings for us. Our server, Kim, chose perfectly for us each time. She chose items on the menu that were seasonal (on there for a limited time only), along with some of the tried and true favorites. This place is a bit pricey, so we reserve going here for special occasions, but it will be our go-to special occasion place each time

This was a big disappointment. The food was over elaborate with little sensitivity to flavor. The pumpkin soup was so highly salted it was nearly inedible. Our first waitress was sent home since there were not enough diners to warrant keeping her on. There is a fine food concept and design to Le Cigar that isn't well executed.

The first time we had dinner at Le Cigare Volant, the seats were hard and really uncomfortable, but the wine, food, and service were all great. So we took a friend back there for a birthday dinner and asked for comfortable seats and mentioned the birthday. Le Cigare put nice cushions on the seats that were MUCH more comfortable and brought us a nice sparkling wine as a birthday treat. Thank you! Very pleasant evening. We went on a quiet Tuesday or Wednesday evening.

The food was really good and very imaginative. The service started out good, very attentive but as more patrons arrived, we saw less and less of our server. There appeared to be only one server for the 15 or so tables and the server has to do a lot of explaining about the menu when you first arrived. There were 2 other staff who would serve the food as it came out of the kitchen. We tried to order a glass of wine from one of them. He took the order but apparently he wasn't authorized to get us the wine. Our server was very busy at that time so it took about 15 minutes for us to get the wine. I would have liked to have enjoyed the wine with my food but wasn't able to do that.

At first, the two wine lists impressed us: one with the proprietor's own wines, the other a selection based on a fascinating explanation of the relationship between soil and wine. The first disappointment was a meager handful of granola(?)to whet our appetites. What followed was a mushy sole escabeche that in no way resembled the bright Spanish version, some indifferent Kabocha squash, and two tiny enchiladas lacking both heft and flavor. The cod had a crust so salty that it overwhelmed the dish. The saving grace was the ceviche, although it was marred by a pile of peanut sawdust. Dessert did not save the meal: dry panna cotta, a clump of inedible spongecake and a melted pool of chocolate ice-cream sprinkled with silly chocolate balls.
