Diner Reviews
  • "Considering the quality of the meal, I expected to pay much more. The appetizers were delicious and the entrees were prepared beautifully. It is high French cuisine that won't break your bank; though, it isn't a place you would be going to weekly, either. At around 30 dollars for an entree, this is a perfect place for delicious cuisine; you can tell a lot of careful planning and meticulous preparation went into this food."

  • "Authentic French cuisine in a warm, cozy atmosphere. The food made us think we were back in Paris."

  • "Comfortable romantic restaurant. Excellent service. Delicious French food with well-balanced flavors and tastes. Looking forward to returning soon."

  • "The only question in my mind is whether I prefer Le Cheri to the Camiel's other place, Bibou. The preparation of the food is superb. Pierre is the best chef in Philadelphia and Charlotte is the best front-of-the house person in the City."

  • "I couldn't figure out why, all of us, but I in particular, fell in love with my meal , especially the quenelle. One of the owners was a chef at Le Bec Fin. I would say the cooking is Le Bec Fin of the 1980s and early 90s slimmed down and updated with modern recipes, techniques and ingredients for modern tastes."

  • "Having lived in Philadelphia for many years, I return often to visit friends, so I'm always looking for interesting places to try. Le Cheri was a real find. Our group of 6 ordered from all over the menu and there wasn't a single miss among the choices. The salade Lyonnaise was the best I've ever had. I make it myself all the time, but who would have thought of adding crispy little bits of fried potato? The Choucroute with crispy duck confit, sausage and sauerkraut was perfect. The ravioli changes with the seasons and when we had it the delicious filling included Swiss chard and ricotta. I'm telling everyone I know to try this beautiful restaurant."

  • "Food was wonderful. Well prepared and presented. Had Quenelle in Lobster Sauce which is a favorite when in Lyon. Very light and true to origin. Started with Foie Gras which was excellent. Husband had Steak Tartare and raved about it and then he also had Quenelle. We shared a cheese course and then a Paris Brest. Waitstaff knowledgeable and paid attention to where we were in meal. Liked the spacing of tables and the lower level of noise which is very rare these days. Really felt that I was back in Lyon! Will certainly go back. Restaurant is small and if you want a particular time, book early."

  • "We had dinner on a Sunday night at Le Cheri. We loved each bite. Our server was awesome - he steered me toward an entree I absolutely loved, helped us nicely with a wine choice and just overall made it a nice evening. Terrific food, nice atmosphere. We will definitely go again."

  • "Overall good rating. However, too expensive for the quality of food. The food is certainly not as what you would get in le bec fin. We ordered steak and was dry and hard and les quenelles were good but the side dish of rice was not (too greasy). The service was excellent and the waiters were friendly. The ambiance was nice although the small room is quite noisy and very crowded."

  • "This was a birthday celebration for our friend and the food was fabulous and the ambiance is lovely and elegant. The only drawback was the very loud group of women (I guess girls night out) at a table near us. They made more noise than everyone else in the room combined. It is a hard call for a restauranteur when other diners detract from the restaurant."

  • "Many thanks for a perfect evening. The food was, as expected, outstanding but the real surprise was the setting. Beautiful rooms but comfortable. The wait staff were professional and friendly."

  • "The first impression of the restaurant gave way to a truly memorable meal. The service was seamless, the food very good and the dining room allowed for conversation. The chef produced a meal that delighted our senses. Our party of four enjoyed different choices and no one was disappointed. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner without being rushed. The question we had on exiting the space was not "Will we return?" but "When would we return?" Tres bien!"

  • "This is a great place for dinner. The menu is different than most local spots and the service wonderful."

  • "I know it's a French restaurant but how about some real alcohol in the bar? They only carry French gin , vodka, etc. and it's awful . Would it kill them to have a few real brands available? And of course only French wines. And the menu offerings are very old fashioned and uninventive. And cold bread and hard butter? In this day and age of wonderful warm breads and sea salted butter being served at the most basic of restaurants, this place is like a throwback to pretentious French restaurants from the 50s."

  • "I have been to t he other restaurant (Bibou) and I prefer it. This was very nice, beautiful but I just prefer the personal attention of the owners at the other. Some of our choices were great and some were just ok. We took our wine and sharing 1 appetizer, and 1 dessert, and 2 entrees the bill was about $60 each , with tip."

  • "I love Bibou so my expections for Le Cheri were high. The service was exceptional but the food at Bibou was more memorable. A chef's tasting menu would be a bonus"

  • "3 of us girlfriends had dinner last week and we loved it. The food was superlative (as usual for this cuisine power duo) and the wine list full of great choices at surprisingly reasonable pricing for PA. I highly recommend making this Art Alliance based restaurant a regular on your go to list."

  • "A wonderful menu and ach course was prepared and served expertly. The escargot fricassee was novel and outstanding, as were the ravioli scallops and turbot...Too many choices for an occasional visitor to Philadelphia.. Only negatives were a very high noise levl early in the evening when the place was fiull; a a bit of slowness getting our water and initial drink. Wine list is extensive, all French, Charlotte was great in guiding the choices."

  • "Le Chéri is a great addition to the Philadelphia dining scene."

  • "Needless to say, chef Pierre Calmel has crafted another masterpiece for Philadelphia. The menu offers a different perspective into French cuisine compared to his other restaurant, bibou. At le Cherie, we found the menu to be very friendly and accessible; especially to those diners not accustomed to French stylings. An excellent modern take on the classic French experience. The cocktails and wine list were excellent and the food was second to none in the Philadelphia area. We cannot wait to go there again!"

  • "We chose to dine at Le Cheri after reading a review in our local newspaper, and we were so glad we did! The food, from appetizers and soup to dessert, was outstanding. Both the quail stuffed with foie gras and the turbot fish entrees were excellent. The dessert, pear charlotte with cream cheese, was delicious! Service was attentive but not intrusive, and the atmosphere was lovely. Our only complaint, though it won't keep us from going back, was the noise level, but the food will make a return trip a must!"

  • "We couldn't help but compare to our experience at Bibou and Bibou wins. Can't say enough great things about the service. Lots of servers & runners stopping by to take care of your every need but without being intrusive. Nice selection of specialty cocktails and wines by the glass. Having dined here not to long ago when it was the Ritt Tavern it was interesting to see the changes they made. The ravioli special was excellent (and with lots of bread delivered, the sauce was great for dipping!) and the foie gras was an interesting presentation. The thor served table side was a wonderful presentation and delicious and the arctic char was good (but needed to be sent for additional fire). Tatin was an excellent dessert & French press was delish."

  • "Excellent ne gem in Rittenhouse Square! Warm welcome by the hostess. Kind, friendly, energetic! We had a wonderful seat by the window and in the back room. Very comfortable and cozy. The room noise level was good and the ambience was perfect. The food is superb. Excellent choices and I highly Recommend the French onion soup. Excellent dessert options. What a wonderful dinner and a perfect evening! Run...don't walk to this restaurant! I also recommend going on a week night and miss the weekend crowd."

  • "We were dinning out to celebrate Valentine's Day. We selected Le Cheri, because we have enjoyed Bibou, and wanted to try this new place within walking distance of our home. Fortunately, we made our reservation before Le Cheri was reviewed in the paper. Their 3 bell rating will most definitely make reservations difficult to come by now. Of course, their 3 bells were well earned. The entire dinning experience was excellent. The quail special we ordered was served at tableside, in a most professional and dramatic manner. The wine list was extensive, and many bottles are available for under $100. We most often frequent BYO places. This was a special occasion splurge for us, and we felt we got great value for our money."

  • "When I mention French food to my friends, they think super fancy, super expensive. Le Cheri defies those concepts, and deliver a great menu of dishes, which are clearly made with dedication and attention to detail without becoming fussy and delicate. Case in point - the Quenelles. They were simply outstanding. They may seem simple, but to execute to perfection takes a lot. Le Cheri delivered on that point, as well as all the other dishes including the Foie Gras. Service was great, and the Wine list didn't disappoint. A great value, in a great location. we will be back. So just go already."

  • "Our table of four, foodies all, feasted on your fish dishes.....quenelles,salt baked dorade, and skate wing. Side dishes like the gnocchi, fava beans and appetizers as well we're cooked to perfection and subtly seasoned. As an added bonus the noise level was low....perfect table spacing and wonderful ambience. One of us had dietary restrictions which were handled graciously and well."

  • "We loved Bibou and Chef Calmel's food for years. This was our second time at Le Cheri, and while the service was still a little rough on our first visit, this one was as good as it gets. Friendly, but not intrusive. Knowledgeable. And the food--the chef has truly hit his stride. You can tell he likes what he's cooking. And so do the guests. The diners ranged in age from seniors to young people celebrating special events. There was laughter in the room, and appreciative sharing of plates at the tables. This place is a real winner. Go!"

  • "I took my husband to Le Cherie for his birthday last night. My review is mixed. The french onion soup and the Quennelle, excellent. The escargot disappointed, and I am a lover of escargot. The arctic char was mushy and bland. The pear charlotte and strawberry rhubarb tart for dessert brought us back to France, very good. Personally, I like Bibou much better, it is lively and every dish succeeds there. I felt as though the wait staff and hostess were directed to ask us how every was after every course, which I found to be very annoying. We were asked numerous times. And finally, although the dining room is lovely and the food is good and reasonably priced, it just was not "fun." It was a good experience, not an excellent one."

  • "This was third chef's dinner we had at the Art Alliance. The food was quite good and portion sizes were reasonable. There were however no vegetables or salad offered with our entrees. Not good. Also there needed to be a few more entrees that would satisfy a vegetarian."

  • "We go to Bibou about every six weeks or so and were looking forward to our first meal at Le Cheri. Like Bibou, we did not leave without our next reservation! There were warm welcomes from Pierre and Charlotte, and some of the team we already knew. Our waiter (previously at Le Bec Fin) was fantastic. The pacing is always perfect--making the meal an experience. Of course, everything ordered was excellent--fish, beef, ravioli, French onion soup, desserts, etc. As advertised, the French wines offered were outstanding and extremely reasonable. The bread is always a hit. We'll likely alternate months between Le Cheri and Bibou for our monthly French dining. They are different enough, yet the energy of the owners and staff are what makes it great."
