Diner Reviews
  • "We celebrated our anniversary with two friends at Le Chat Noir and were glad we chose it - a lovely French restaurant, very reasonably priced with excellent food and superb service. We sat out front on the glassed in porch and enjoyed the closest thing to a Paris sidewalk café you can get in DC. Everything was delicious, especially notable were the appetizer crepes. The wine list has great choices that are not outrageously priced. Easy to park in the local streets, no issues there. All in all, a pleasant surprise and yes, we'll be back."

  • "Love in the neighborhood and has always been a great dining experience for dinner or weekend brunch."

  • "I went there with my girlfriend for brunch. The food was amazing. The egg fritadas were fantastic, and I had the steak. It was fabulous, and probably involved a pound of butter somewhere, but eh...French food. The service was great, and it was a wonderful experience."

  • "Le Chat Noir is a wonderful neighborhood spot but be prepared to wait for your food. I rarely get out of there in less than 2 hours. If you have the time for a leisurely meal, then it's a great choice."

  • "This was one of several visits we have made to le Chat Noir. Duck, etc appetizer was fabulous. Scallop main dish was among the best I have ever eaten. Congratulations. We will return again."

  • "Happened upon this place by chance the other day. It is delightful. Tried the escargot and tomato tart. Terrific! Will definitely be back."

  • "First time at Le Chat Noir, although I had heard good things about it. Welcome was friendly, wednesday night wine special was a nice bonus. Enjoyed the food, service was excellent. Nice to know this is a local option!"

  • "I've eaten at Le Chat Noir many times and always found the food to have a delicious and subtle touch. 4 rather than 5 stars because of the limited vegetarian options available. But every vegetarian dish I've had has always been excellent - and always finishes with a very clean palette. The waiters are helpful, with just the right amount of attention without overdoing it. We chose the Le Chat Noir over every other restaurant in the DC area to celebrate my wife's recent birthday because we have always had a positive and enjoyable eating experience there. It is a charming neighborhood jewel and a well kept secret."

  • "Every time that we travel to DC, we make a point to eat here. Having lived in France for a year and a half, this place reminds me so much of life back in France. I will continue to come here over and over."

  • ". Dinner was delicious enjoying the bread, bouillabaisse, be o Beef bourgeois, seafood dish. Etc. will be back...."

  • "We've been to Le Chat Noir several times, and each time, there was a problem with the service. The last time, we (a party of four) were seated immediately; but, an hour later, we still had not received our entrees. We had ordered a bottle of wine and finished it before our dinners had arrived. Our server asked if we'd like to order another bottle. We declined the "offer" since we didn't want to reward slow service with another wine order. We also passed on dessert and coffee. We just wanted to get out of there. Finally, our check indicated that we had been overcharged for two of our dinners. It's in a convenient location; but that can't overcome the poor service."

  • "It has slipped...Le Chat Noir used to be one of my very favorite French bistros in DC, I am originally from France, have lived in DC for over 30 years and know the area very well. I had lunch there last January with a friend, and was not so happy with the food as I used to be. Less care taken in the preparation, my salad was so doused in dressing it was almost not edible. Other places in the area are now doing better. "

  • "On any given afternoon one can enjoy a leisurely lunch of homemade quiche, salads, sandwiches and entrees. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, food is simply plated and always made with fresh ingredients. I have dined here on several occasions...sometimes with one friend and sometimes with 10 of us. The service is ALWAYS accommodating and friendly. You could easily imagine yourself being in a small cafe on the Champs Elysees for a brief respite from the usual DC scene. "

  • "Not a place to visit in the summer months. AC sucks! Food and service great!"

  • "The restaurant (especially the front porch) has real charm; and on this morning, the side windows were open à la française. Nice. The omelette was very filling but curiously lacking in taste, as was the frittata; this was similar to an evening meal a few months ago. Needs "spicing up". Our server bent over backwards to ensure I had a tasty dessert since we had miscommunicated."

  • "Wonderful French food, an unusual and changing menu of specials, and a charming setting. Especially nice for evenings when the front windows are open. Sam is terrific."

  • "The food here is quintessential French bistro style and very authentic, thanks I'm sure to the French owner. The escargot were garlicky and nicely cooked. I had the steak frites (simple but tasty) and my date had a savory vegetable crepe (which was nice if not overly memorable). We both had a kir maison and I had a few glasses of red that were all very good. We dined at the later end of their service on a drizzly night, so there weren't many people inside and it was very quiet, but I'm sure when the place is full and the windows are open it has a bustling bistro vibe."

  • "A great find that we've enjoyed on special occasions for a few years now. Food has always been top notch, and the cozy, informal setting is a great backdrop for good conversation."

  • "Great food, reasonable prices, nice environment. You can tell that the establishment cares and puts effort and energy into their restaurant."
    Dined on 5/21/2014
  • "Had a great dinner here. My only complaint would be that 2-tops are right next to one another so there's little privacy unless the next table is empty, which luckily for us was the case. It is a small space."

  • "Go here on weeknight. We were appalled by the noise on a Friday night. NOT French! Food and service were rushed. We have liked this restaurant in the past but will go on a Tuesday next time. "

  • "We chose Le Chat Noir for lunch because we knew we'd be able to hear each other as we enjoyed a nice meal, as opposed to other places where the food might be better but the decibel level requires shouting. It's not the first time we ate at Le Chat Noir and we'd return, though probably choose different entrees. The atmosphere is very nice."

  • "No Michelin-stars, but simply excellent food and a nice winelist. Ambiance upstairs is less than downstairs. "

  • "Despite having just come from a yoga class and looking a bit worse for the wear, we were greeted warmly and given stellar service with our wonderful French fare. The risotto that came with the perfectly done salmon was to die for. The steaks were juicy and pink, the fries were hot and crispy, and the mashed potatoes were garlicky and delicious. Desserts were the only things not to rave about - the bele Helene was a bit too chocolately and the creme brûlée just good. All in all a delightful dining experience overall in a charming bistro. "

  • "Although we made these reservations for 7 pm a few weeks ago, we were called the day before and told that our reservation was at 645 without explanation. When we arrived we were seated at a table right next to the kitchen with waiters, waitresses, hosts, hostesses, kitchen staff and everyone working there zooming past our table every few seconds. It was a very uncomfortable situation. As well, the open table reservation listed a 3-course dinner menu for $35 which was not offered at all. There was only an a la carte menu available. In short, there was no reason to change our reservation to 645 and there was no reason to seat us in such an uncomfortable place when so many other seats were available."

  • "Le Chat did a great job! Service was very good. The menu selections had something for everyone - presentation was perfect and equally match to the food."

  • "Very friendly service and very good food. Noise level quite high - hard to converse with others. Tables much too close and seating not comfortable."

  • "There were definitely regulars there on a Thursday night and the place was packed by 645pm. Or waitress was attentive and when we asked for suggestions age was helpful. We shared a cheese&meat board, very tasty and interesting. Also a fig salad and their classic plate steak&frites. Both were delicious. It was cozy and we say on a porch with fans, so outside but in and nice. If you have a hankering for French and want nice venue, head to Le Chat. "

  • "We love this restaurant and have been there on and off for over five years. This time the noise level was over the top. We were shouting at each other and did not linger over coffee and dessert because of the noise. Energetic is nice, but when you end up with a headache, it ceases to be fun. We will think twice before we return again on a weekend evening."

  • "Food was very good -- our party had an omelet, a benedict, and the quiche -- everyone was very happy with the food. The service was less than desirable. The coffee cups are very small, which would imply frequent refilling. However, we had to flag down a server for one refill, and for the most part, our cups were empty. They do need to be more attentive in that area. "

  • "We live in the neighborhood and have walked by this restaurant many times without ever thinking to try it. As a vegetarian, I haven't had much luck with French food. We were so pleasantly surprised! The atmosphere is very cozy, the food delicious, and the local, neighborhood feel was wonderful. Will definitely come back."

  • "Food was great, but there were issues with service. There were only a few tables filled on a rainy weeknight, so it was not busy or crowded. "

  • "Le Chat Noir is an old favorite and we enjoyed our recent evening there as a respite from a long day and nasty weather. The list of wines available on half priced wine Tuesdays is a great way to try new wines. The evening's specials were cooked perfectly and the service was great. "

  • "Bad food, horrible service, noise restaurant, pricey venue for what it offers. It was my fist time there and I intend never to come back. "

  • "We waited over an hour and a half to get our dinner causing us to have to eat in 15 minutes because we had theatre tickets and had to get downtown. Bad night there!~"
