Diner Reviews
  • "If you are looking for typical French fare this is it. The fish is fresh and comes with a nice sauce and the beef bourguignon is excellent. Of course, one could make a meal of the bread alone. The desserts are wonderful too, especially the chocolate mousse and the crepes. "

  • "Have frequented this restaurant often over the years and the menu seemed to stay the same. On my recent visit the specials were unusual and excellent."

  • "Good food and service but, the hostess managed seat assignments horribly. The restaurant is small but our party of 5 (4adults and a baby) were put in an aea between the extension of the restaurant and original building. The restaurant was not full and we could have been better placed."

  • "This little gem is hiding in a very residential area. Parking is tough, but the food and service make it worth the trouble. The menu is all French and offer enough variety, the portions are moderate and the presentation is nice. It is a great brunch/lunch place on a nice sunny day, when you can enjoy the open veranda. We'll be back!"

  • "We wanted a restaurant where 3 couples could have a great meal but as important, a good conversation. Le Chat Noir provided both. Wonderful food!! Great menu. Noise level was low enough that we could hear ourselves. We'll come back."

  • "Loved the brunch special! $20 for entree, appetizer or dessert, & champagne or mimosa. Good deal! Especially when your friend doesn't drink & you get both glasses of champagne! :-) Food was good. Portions were generous. I will definitely return! Perhaps with the same friend who doesn't drink! ;-)"

  • "We've been going to Le Chat Noir since the restaurant opened, and were really looking forward to this visit. This was the first time I was disappointed. My swordfish was VERY overlooked. The meal overall did not live up to my past experiences -- just did not show the same level of care and execution. Nothing was beyond ordinary. Does the restaurant have a new chef, or was this just a very off night? Plus, we're used to the restaurant being crowded, even on weekdays. This time, there were very few dinners. If there are currently problems, I hope they can be corrected. I want to like the restaurant again -- we really like its cozy, neighborhood feel."

  • "Been here before, reviewed before. Just wanted to add that the Bijoux de Boeuf I had on this trip were the best beef dish I've had in years. The mushroom with wine reduction sauce was absolutely delicious -- an aggressively flavorful adornment to three tender medallions of beef. And the frites, though a cardiological no-no at my age, were delicate, light and perfectly fried."

  • "Reading the reviews on Open Table, one would think this was an outre-Atlantique version of a Parisian bistro. It is not. It is a cute, comfy dining experience whose food did not strike us as being particularly French. Our two different beef selections were OK, but nothing special; the fries, contrary to the hype, were tasteless. A salade chevre chaud came tepid at best and had to be sent back. Decent selection of wines; the suggested red was fine but not exactly what we were looking for. So, all in all, we had mixed impressions of the experience. We would go back for another try. But, having lived in Paris and having dined at other affordable places in the District, a final judgement is still pending on this much bally-hooed place."

  • "This was our first visit to the restaurant and we will make a point of going again. Both the food and the service were very good."

  • "I am both dairy and gluten sensitive so eating out is a challenge. The fact that the kitchen was willing to make the ragout gluten free made it possible for me to consume that delicious dish with the merguez sausage."

  • "Solid food, good wine. Very cute resturant, the service is good, but a little slow...that said it's a french resturant and you shouldn't be in a rush here anyways. If you're in no hurry it's a great spot for wine and conversation. What could be more french? I will be coming back."

  • "Lovely brunch with delicious Crepes, Benedicts, trout and what felt like bottomless mimosas. Nice atmosphere, older crowd."

  • "Great place to catch up with a couple of friends. One dish (the quiche) disappointed but the staff were very apologetic and gracious. Crepes here are the best."

  • "This was my first visit to Le Chat Noir, but it won't be my last. It was my 69th birthday. We love Parisian bistros and this came close to that ambience. We had a great time with wonderful service and delicious food. Can't wait to go again!"

  • "Great food, but downstairs is a bit cramped, and service is always a man or two short."

  • "We've been going here for close to 4 years. Every time we go, the food seems to get a little worse. Not sure why. I always order the same thing."

  • "Incredible service and food. The Crèpe fourrée is really amazing, everything was truly delicious."

  • "Brunch was delicious and a good deal. But, the tables are too close together so it was difficult to hear our conversation over our neighbors. Plenty of on street parking."

  • "Varied menu of French classics with a subspecialty in crêpes, both sweet and savory. Some might say Le Chat Noir lacks the "wow" factor and I wouldn't argue. However, you get a gratifying meal with commensurate service at a perhaps unexpectedly reasonable price. For us, Le Chat Noir may not be a "special occasion" restaurant, but it's certainly the kind of place we'll return to often."

  • "Their savory galettes, French bread, and butter are the best I've had outside of France. The "Marie" filling of melted Swiss cheese with mushrooms melts in your mouth, and the small scoops of cold salad on the plate are delicious."

  • "The quiche of the day was outstanding. It is a great place for a quiet neighborhood lunch."

  • "We discovered this place through travelzoo, and their brunch was very good. The carrots in my coq au vin may be the best I've had. We'll definitely be back."

  • "My wife and I decided to buy a half off deal from the Capital Deal to try out a new restaurant (new to us). We were not disappointed. The staff was attentive and friendly. The food was delicious and the wine was moderately priced and very good also. The seating is rather close, but not too bad. We would definately visit again with friends next time to share in the fine food and atmosphere."

  • "I have been meaning to try Le Chat Noir for some time. It is close to my office and I love French Food. I give it A+ for atmosphere, service and food. After hours, parking is not difficult. The waitress was very pleasant and attentive. My wife and I both loved it and will return soon."

  • "As luck would have it, I forgot to print & bring our dinner voucher. I'd also been giving our waitperson wrong voucher info but the owner graciously served us anyway. When I got home, I called with the correct info. Due to my gaffe, hubby and owner were reminded that they'd met before! One misstep really enhanced our evening. The owner seemed equally grateful for the exchange. The waitstaff was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu and history of the restaurant. I found the physical description given very accurate - very cozy/intimate. Soft lighting. Great background music and artwork to look at. Loved our early reservation - beat the crowds. Overall a great time and our first French food outing but definitely not our last!"

  • "Le Chat Noir is in our neighborhood and it is nice to have the option. We've been there several times. The last time on Valentine's Day when there was a limited special menu that did not include my favorite of their menu options, mussels. Each time we go, we say the same thing...the food is okay but it is a lovely spot with typically good wine and we go every now and again for a change of pace. There are much better bistro type places in the area. Brasserie Beck remains my favorite."

  • "Took my very cosmopolitan 87-year old mom out for a birthday dinner along with my much more sophisticated than me sister from Chicago. We all LOVED it. Great casual, European atmosphere, incredibly tasty food, crowded in a friendly way with lots of conversation around us, with people looking at each other vs. screens large and small. We'll be back again!"

  • "I normally love Le Chat Noir; it's one of my favorite places in the neighborhood, and possibly in the whole area. The food is always fantastic--I have never had a bad dish here. This time, however, the service was so atrocious that I am doubting returning for a while. We were seated at a terrible table (with a reservation), and when we asked to move (plenty of open tables), the host said "I have 150 people coming tonight! I have to juggle everything!" We were moved upstairs to another table; the food was excellent, but our waiter disappeared halfway through! The very kind busboys took our dessert order (sadly got it wrong) and processed our check! If you are young, they will treat you poorly here as they think you won't spend any money."

  • "If you're looking for a Paris bistrot, Le Chat Noir fits the bill (I lived in Paris for 1-1/2 years). The service was great, the soup of the day was a yummy pear-celery blend (who would have thought?), and the prices are lower than comparable food downtown. I'll be going back soon."

  • "We started with the special appetizer - fois gras in a savory creme brulee. It was outstanding melt in your mouth deliciousness. My husband ordered the braised lamb stew with southwest spices, figs, squash, quinoa, and it was fantastic. I ate the steak frites, and which was okay. The steak was NY Strip, a rather thin cut, and I'd ordered it medium-rare but it was a bit overcooked, more medium than medium-rare. The butter on top helped flavor the steak and the fries were perfect. We finished with classic creme brulee, which was wonderul. Our waiter was attentive and very helpful. The wait staff shirts have the logo on the back, from a painting by Rodolphe Salis, and are very cool and reasonably priced. I highly recommend this restaurant."
