Diner Reviews
  • "The dinner was outstanding. We hadn't been to Le Charm for several years, and it was at a higher level than we remembered. We took friends who are very fussy, and they loved the choice. Our only complaint was that the restaurant became very noisy. We were there at 5:30 which was quite acceptable, but by the time we left, the noise level was pretty high."

  • "I'm very fond of Le Charm, which is elegant but not fussy in all of its "Frenchness." The wait staff is charming, the food is excellent, and I believe one gets a very good value for the price. We enjoyed the swordfish special and the lamb chops and both were excellent."

  • "We wanted to try something different for a celebratory group outing, and wanted to give Le Charm a try. Many of us live or work in the area, and had no idea it was there, despite going by it all the time! The service was super slow at times, but great at others (we ended up being almost an hour late to Part 2 of our outing due to the slowness). It took almost 20 minutes for us to get the bday boy a glass of wine as they didn't notice others had joined the group, and it took a long time to place our dessert order. Food was delicious though, and the setting is pretty nice/romantic. Restroom situation is a little janky (why is there a chair in front of the toilet, facing the toilet?). Had a great time, but not sure if we'll return."

  • "A great French Restuarant with food and service comparing with Restuarants charging twice the amount` - suitable both for a casual dinner or a special occaision. Excellent service by an efficient and friendly staff"

  • "I had not been here in awhile. It proved to be as good as I remembered. Excellent French food. My favorite dessert is their floating island. Give it a try."

  • "One of our favorite places to dine out in San Francisco, we try to make it here once a month! Lena and her team offer a warm and inviting ambience with superb service and fresh local fare. The menu has a nice selection and there is always a prix fixe menu that has nice choices and is very affordable. Actually everything is affordable, so you can't go wrong here. The special of the night was a very nice pork chop that was done perfectly. Our server recommended a very nice Romaine de la Vougeraie which went nicely with our meal. We passed on desert and went with a nice port to wrap up the evening. Live music on Thursdays always makes for a pleasant dining experience. I recommend making a reservation as it is fairly popular in the hood!"

  • "We came here on Wednesday night to celebrate my birthday and my parents' 40th anniversary. We ordered French onion soup, the crab salad, pork chop, cassoulet and trout. The French onion soup was well-flavoured and the use of a high-quality Gruyere cheese makes all the difference. The pork chop, which my father had, was perfectly cooked and moist. My mother had the cassoulet which is a mix of white beans, sausages and duck confit. All the flavours were distinct and the meats were seasoned to perfection. Finally, I had the trout which was light and delicate but with a nice buttery finish. I also had the brioche pudding dessert with vanilla ice cream which was decadent and marvelous. The staff were also very attentive. Highly recommended!"

  • "The food was great, the staff was well organized and really friendly, and the owner personally talked to each table."

  • "Although this has been a favorite restaurant for us, the noise level was too much. We could not hear each other. But we could get into the conversations next to us because the tables are so close. Not the best experience. The food remains excellently done...Classic French, but the menu has not changed so nothing new or exciting."

  • "We picked Le Charm based on reviews that said food was great, reasonably priced and had good service, Supposedly this is a neighborhood restaurant, however, I wouldn't walk there from Union Square hotel. Hostess oversees everything and keeps waiters on their toes. She clearly cares about her customers. Food was quite good to excellent, but ambiance was lacking. We were seated in the outside area with enclosed siding, in March. Menu includes a variety of entrees , from standard French to all American, to satisfy the pickiest diner. Wines were well priced , and there were many to choose from. Our party of 6, had a good time. I would ask to be seated inside, should we return, as that area was more intimate."

  • "This was one of our best SF eating experiences in a long time. Less crowd and noise because away from the center of the city. Only regret is that it's not close enough to Civic Center/Gough Street for a pre-opera dinner!"

  • "This is a well appointed restaurant. All indices which are included normally in rigorous and not so rigorous reviews were rated, by me, as Five Star. My wife and I enjoyed the music; this was a surprise treat. I will return to this establishment and recommend it to my friends. This was a superb dining experience."

  • "We have been eating at Le Charm for several years. It's hidden away - you almost need to know how to find it. The fixed price menu offers some interesting options at a very reasonable price and the staff are very helpful advising on ingredients and preparation. This is a small restaurant with an adjacent covered garden area with live music on Thursday nights. Reservations are essential."

  • "I booked for 8:15 table, I asked for a special table for my Canadian guest. As we entered, the junior hostess wanted to seat us in an alley next to the restrooms. I objected since there were 3 other tables for 2 in the main dining room. As the waitress suggested a romantic corner table, the Owner, jumped rudely and snapped at her in our face objecting to giving that table (which incidently remained open; was later connected to another table to host a group of 5 French people). The woman never came to our table to "Charm" us. Another nice young French waitress serves us for the evening. I have been to this place several times in the past, their menu was more exciting, delicious and the ambiance pleasant. Not now. Go to Fringale!!"

  • "Lena and her team always make dining a pleasure, good food, good wine, reasonable pricing and great specials. The Prix-Fixe menu is well rounded and you can choose items from the prix-fixe menu to order a la carte, which is nice. Live jazz on Thursdays!"

  • "If you are looking for perfect service and food you want to eat at La Charm. It's like eating in Paris. Only the French know how to do baby lamb chops and frys."

  • "Le Charm is a lovely, unpretentious bistro, as authentic as any in the city. Try the chicken livers salad, or the frittes and you'll see what I mean. And the service is pitch perfect - helpful, responsive without ever becoming intrusive. I've eaten here many times over the years and I will eat here again. Oh, and it's prices are quite reasonable. When I was eating dinner there last week I ordered a glass of wine from the list. I was given a sip first, something many restaurants do only when you order a bottle."

  • "Great atmosphere of a real French bistro, and the food was just FANTASTIC ... but, no rush, as the service is so so. I highly recommend and have to return to try other dishes that seemed delicious!!!"

  • "About twice a year this is our go to for Classic French Bistro food. Whether it's just the two of us or a party of 22 Lina and her team treat us like guests in thier home, and we love this place."

  • "Le Charm is most definitely on my best top 5 restaurants. Amazingly delicious food, went on Valentine's day, great service and romantic ambiance. Highly recommended!"

  • "My wife and I just came here for Valentine's Day, and everything was perfect. From verifying my reservation, to being called back to see if I wanted an earlier dining time, to our charming, funny waiter, to the delicious, thoughtfully made food, we had a great experience with this restaurant. It's everything good people have been saying about it. This is our second here, and it definitely won't be our last."

  • "We have been going to this charming little French restaurant for years and love both the atmosphere and the food. On this last trip we discovered how much the 5th street neighborhood has changed and parking was very hard to find but the restaurant is as good as it ever was and just as romantic. It's hard to recommend a single dish, as the menu changes and is always excellent."

  • "Completely underwhelmed. Understaffed and the staff that were present were only attentive to those tables ordering 2 or more bottles of costly wines. The food was average. As a seasoned traveler both nationwide and abroad and well versed in food and wine the value proposition was not even close when looking at cost and quality."

  • "Le Charm was wonderful. It had a great ambiance, courteous service, and delicious food. We had the onion soup, scallops, chicken, and sauteed spinach. Unfortunately no room for dessert--maybe next time! We were seated in the patio area, which was closed off for the weather and had heat lamps going. If it weren't for the honking, it was like we got out of the city for date night. We came here as part of our work our way through the Zagat 2013, but agreed it's somewhere we'd like to come back--especially in nicer weather for the patio area again. The noise level rating was only because there was an energetic large party seated near us. Otherwise the other tables were quiet, but I'd imagine it can have it's moments depending on the group(s)."

  • "Beautiful ambiance great for date night or special occasion Brussels sprouts salad was amazing unlike anything I have tried. The seafood risotto was creamy and rich I would highly reccomend this place and will definitely go back. Our table however was stuck in the corner next to the kitchen which spoilt the mood a bit But overall an excellent dining experience"

  • "This jewel-box sized bistro does not disappoint! From the moment we arrived, until we signed the check, we were in heaven. The cassoulet was perfectly authentic and the lamb was perfectly tender. We were only upset that we couldn't finish the tart we ordered for dessert."

  • "We had dinner at Le Charme and it was very good. My only "complaint" was that we had a little table in the corner on the way to the restroom and it was so dark that I couldn't see my food. I had to ask for an extra candle! The waiter was great and I will go back, but I will be sure to ask for a table with some light."
