LB Steak - Santana RowGreat Steak, Unlikely LocationLocated at the end of Santana Row, LB Steak did a number of things really well on this second visit with a colleague. It's a beautiful space, in a reserved, modern, steak house type of way. Service was friendly, attentive but informal. Starters of onion soup and the BLT wedge werent the most innovative thing we could have ordered, but they were solid and tasty.
The steaks were excellent, and I commend LB Steak on a wide range of price points for meals - you can probably get a steak dinner here with a starter for under $50. But my prime NY steak was the one you want - yum, well cooked, simply seasoned, with a traditional range of sauces on the side. Brocollini was spicy and great. Desserts disappeared rapidly. Although it was a beautiful day (Monday), there were only 2 other occupied outdoor tables. It was very easy to converse which was important to us because my wife and I wanted to talk to our friend across the table.
Service was great and our waitress was knowledgeable. The food (asparagus, ceviche, chocolate hazel nut meltaway, dry-aged steak, halibut , and oysters) was all excellent. Shared appetizers and salads among five of us (had to ask for some serving utensils to share the salads, would have expected the servers to be tuned to that). Desserts were excellent. Steaks are cooked perfectly the way you order it. The truffle mac and cheese is more on the al dente side, if you like that. A few hiccups with the service: the server wasn't very informed about the bar offerings (though we were a little particular), and 1 appetizer came out much later than the rest. Otherwise, he was very friendly and helpful. And the food was so good that it didn't even matter.
Appetizers were great! The pork belly was delicious, the caesar salad was "the best she'd ever had" and the calamari was great too, after we asked for aioli sauce, instead of the marinara that came with it. We all had steak, all cooked to perfection. The wine list has great price range, with some excellent mid to high end wines. Service is very good, although always seems to be a short wait for booked tables. The Manager and staff were very friendly and greeted us when we arrived. They didn't have a children's menu posted on the website so I e-mailed the Office Director a couple of days before who promptly responded and sent me a menu to take a look at. She had a great personality but made sure not to interrupt us too much throughout the dinner. She would just casually come by and fill up our glasses of wine as needed. The food was cooked to perfection. My steak had amazng flavor to it and basically melted in your mouth and the Mac and cheese is NEVER disappointing there. I was very upset that the scalloped potatos are no longer on the menu at this point in time. A boring old baked potato was not what I had in mind but oh well. The placed was packed and yet the noise level was perfect. Our server, Chad gave us a warm greeting and since it was our first time, he did make recommendations that we did consider. He was very knowledgeable about many of the menu items. The fried Calamari had thinly sliced lemon fried with the calamari which was unique and tasty. His recommendation of the dry aged ribeye was spot on and it indeed carried its own unique flavor without any sauces. My friend had the bone-in filet, medium rare which was done to perfection and paired well with the red wine sauce. The beignets were ok but did not affect our overall experience.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMNot Bad for Santana Row SteakI was a little dubious coming here, but it was during Restaurant Week and they had a prix fixe menu that I wanted to try. Their dishes were pretty adventurous and I definitely appreciated the enlightenment. For example, my steak came out with marrow flan, which I had never tried before. I'm pretty critical when it comes to steak as my family are big on rare, quickly seared steaks and have a keen eye for quality. My fiance and I tried two of their steak cuts, which I believe were the prime rib and the sirloin. Both were juicy and not overly spiced, cooked the way we wanted it. Their vegetable sides were not overcooked and tasted farm fresh. I especially liked their wine pairing choice with the meal. As we had a table of 5 dining, we had the opportunity to taste a variety of dishes. The scallop appetizer with citrus was fabulous, as were the oysters. Dinner included some of the finest beef that I've encountered in San Jose. Every dish was cooked to order. Presentation was appropriate, not over the top. Side dishes were cooked perfectly. The wine list has a good variety of offerings, but is not overly large to confuse the average wine drinker. After dinner choices are nicely laid out with the dessert choices.
