Lavo - NYCA great eveningIf you're looking for a evening to remember, then Lavo is the place.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMLAVO stands for yummy !Second time I visited LAVO. First time I can't recall much. Serious jetlag coming directly form Europe. Although...I remembered I liked the food.
Second time more awake. LAVO looks good. The crowd is diverse. A lot of flashy, young people, but also a part of the audience is more mature. Service is well organized. Our waitress was great, quick, to the point and everything went smoothly. The served food was outstanding. Nice, fresh salads. Good seasoned main dish (king prawns with linguini) and a well tasting desert (raspberry panna cotta). Good coffee, but you might expect that at an Italian oriented restaurant.
Everything was well portioned. Not cheap but also not 'over the top'.
In short, the 4 of us had a very pleasant evening at LAVO !5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMWay better than expectedAfter spending my birthday dinner a couple weeks ago at Bagatelle and being extremely disappointed, I kind of unfairly assumed a similar place like Lavo would be much more of the same. I couldn't have been more wrong.
The service, food, quality of menu, wine list, AND portion size were all excellent. Even my dad liked it and he hates trendy, expensive restaurants! The best part was, despite being a super classy place, the atmosphere was relaxed. At Bagatelle, we were told we had to leave in 2 hours (of course if you spend enough money, the manager will use his discretion to decide if you can stay longer). There was none of that and we were never made to feel unwelcomed.

However, do not expect to enter the Lavo Club from the restaurant.
That's what happened to me: had to leave the restaurant and get into the line to enter the club. But, as you NYC folks know, this is when things get complicated. The security guy (or the doorman, if you wish) wanted a US$100 bribe. I don't bribe. Ever.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMBest customer service ever...Despite the 1.5 hour wait beyond our reservation & the mix of Euro-trash, BnT posers, hipsters & pseudo-professionals, Lavo was excellent. For the wait, we were offered complimentary drinks, appetizers & desserts. The staff , particularly our waiter Dan, couldn't have been more accommodating or professional. Dan was familiar with all of the dishes, delivered food himself and called us by name, as did the manager who made his way to us mid-meal to make sure we were satisfied. Aside from the fact that the customer service was beyond excellent, every dish we had was fantastic. And as far as the eclectic crowd, they are all part of what makes this place great. The only thing I didn't like was that there wasn't much space between my chair and the woman sitting behind me. Our chairs were back to back with each other and the servers weren't able to pass through. Honestly, based on our experience, those other reviews are dead wrong. Our meals were absolutely fantastic. The portions are very generous, and each course arrived quickly. Our server was really wonderful. She was friendly, warm, and very accommodating. All of the servers in our section seemed great. I observed them chatting with the customers and frequently sharing a laugh. I'm only mentioning this because we were concerned that this place would be loaded with major attitude (like any place in Meatpacking), but this was totally not the case.
