A word from Lavandou Restaurant
For almost twenty years Lavandou has remained a charming French restaurant in Washington D.C.’s Cleveland Park neighborhood. Tucked in amongst unique storefronts on Connecticut Avenue, Lavandou's cozy glow and relaxed atmosphere lures its guests inside where they can enjoy fine southern French cuisine.

The cuisine at Lavandou is based on the essence and smells of Provence. This region along the French Riviera is famous for its rustic roots and uses only the most natural ingredients. Many of our dishes are created with tomatoes, roasted red peppers, eggplants and olives and are seasoned with fragrant garlic, rosemary, thyme and basil. These flavorful traditional dishes, prepared at length and with healthy, fresh ingredients are truly reflective of the Mediterranean style of “savior vivre.”

In the heart of Cleveland Park, Lavandou is conveniently located across from the Uptown Theater and close to the Cleveland Park (red line) metro stop.

This was my first time at Lavandou, and the food was the best French food I can recall having: grilled salmon on a bed of deliciously seasoned sauteed spinach over shredded carrots and something else, with spectacular profiteroles for dessert. Alas, that was the last night for Lavandou, unless the buyer of the building allows them back in at an affordable rent. The service was frenetic but unwaveringly friendly, as there was only one remaining (and quite professional) waiter for a nearly full house.

The only negative: we were told that Lavendou may have to move out of their present location. That would be a major disappointment for those of us who have enjoyed eating there for many years. It is truly a neighborhood gem - good food, excellent service, delightful ambience. May the new owners of the building have the good sense to let Lavendou stay!

I remember a time as a baby lawyer where this was my take visiting family. It was aways a hit, and I came across as some one who understand comfortable fine dining. Now that I am retired and have more choices to go to, I still like the feeling and the basic average plus food. I had the soup and quiche for lunch, my friends had wine, quiche and steak sandwich. I'll be sorry if the rumors of their devise are true. Wishing the best of luck to Lavandou and its staff.

The French are noted for their sauces, and Lavendou does them up quite nicely. We highly recommend the beet salad, the Duck with polenta and the Sea Bass with spinach. As always, one could make a meal out of just the bread alone. Go there early because the place fills up fast.

Have been to Lavandou many times and have always been satisfied. It is a cozy place with authentic French food. This latest visit was during restaurant week and the restaurant was packed. Unfortunately they seemed understaffed and we ended up waiting extraordinarily long for our appetizers and meal. Also they were out of several standards for the appetizers, including escargots, fish soup, and the sautéed calamari--all of which I would have liked to order. However, this has not been true of previous visits so I'm chalking it up to their being caught off guard by a full house during restaurant week.

Hadn't been to Lavandou in a number of years. The interior has been renovated and tables have a pleasant distance between them (not the case before). We went on a Sat night, 6:30. Not at all crowded until after 7. Nice ambiance. Very pleased with the food. I had lamb chops with haricot verts and garlic roasted potatoes, spouse had hangar steak and pommel frites; shared a delicious beet and goat cheese salad and the apple tartan with vanilla ice cream. We will definitely go back. The PostPoints coupon really made it worthwhile ($20 off) but it would still be a good special occasion place without the coupon.

My husband and I visited Lavandou for the first time over the weekend and we were quite impressed! We lived in Marseille for some time and the meal we had here reminded us very much of the food we would have there. The mussels were outstanding and the duck cooked to perfection. Everything was worth the money and we had a wonderful experience. Looking forward to visiting DC again so we can go back to this restaurant.

This was our 2nd New Year's Eve with you, and it was even more fun than last time! The prix fixe menu was delic. (Only quibble: how many of the selections ran out before we arrived; 2 salads, 2 dessert choices; esp. a problem with the champagne granité. (They compensated by offering a free glass of champagne.) That aside, we loved everything we ordered, esp. the mushroom soup with truffle oil!) Staff was attentive and got diners in a great, friendly mood. By the time the noisemakers and party hats were distributed, we'd all started talking, singing, and throwing serpentines at each other! With the complimentary glass of champagne offered a few minutes before midnight - we all rang in 2014...like I said, classy and friendly!

Our New Year's Eve dinner at Lavandou was delightful! We found the holiday decorations charming and the general ambience conducive to conversation. The four of us took advantage of the many choices on the fixed-price menu, and each selected a different entrée and dessert. We are all pleased with our choices! Everything was delicious and the presentations were beautiful. The wait staff took care of us in a friendly and efficient manner, despite the pressures of New Year's Eve. We'll be back soon to celebrate another special occasion! Thanks for a lovely evening.

We generally like this restaurant so decided to go for NYE dinner. It was expensive for the 4 course affair but we thought we would try it anyway. Soup was boring as starter, main course filet was good but not exceptional and desert was heavy. For $250 definitely not worth it. We will go again though not for a special occasion.

We discovered this restaurant Thanksgiving weekend, and loved it so much we made reservations for Christmas Eve. We loved it so much on Christmas Eve that we made reservations for New Year's Eve. I am a regular at this family-owned restaurant and have never been disappointed, recommending it highly. This time was Christmas Eve, and in addition to the full regular menu offered an extensive list of additional dishes. It was absolutely packed, which explains why I only gave *** for service -- it usually gets **** from me, and the relatively high noise level rating -- it's normally quieter. I did not check the wine list box because I always order house wine by the glass, which is fine. There is no bar. A true fixture of Cleveland Park, it is one of my very favorite restaurants in DC. Incidentally, it is kitty-corner across Connecticut Avenue from the Uptown Theater and can thus be conveniently combined with a visit to the latter.

The service was unprofessional and nonchalant. Had to ask for bread. The hanger steak was grisly. The French fries were likely frozen regular US French fries. They were soggy neither the cut nor crispiness of real French frites. The Tarte tantane was soggy. No acknowledgement of friend' s birthday was mentioned in the Open Table reservation or upon arrival at the front door.

This was our second visit, although it had been quite some time since our first trip there. We were in the area attending another event, so it made sense to give it another try. While everything we ordered was good, none of it was fantastic. One of us ordered the filet mignon. It was cooked perfectly, and served with French fries. The fries were a frozen variety. There is no reason for that. I had the bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin. My wife had the duck. It was cooked perfectly as well. So, while I don't have any specific complaints about the food, nothing was exciting enough that would make us go back. Parking is also very limited. Be aware.

Lavandou is a delightful neighborhood French restaurant that I have long patronized without ever being disappointed in either the excellent food or attentive service. As for the boxes I haven't checked, while there is no outdoor dining as such, there are large windows that look out on Connecticut Avenue that are opened during appropriate weather. I haven't checked "notable wine list" because I just order house wines by the glass. The other boxes are outside of my range of experience. But my overall impression is a VERY STRONG POSITIVE RECOMMENDATION.

My dining partner and I arrived more than half an hour early for our reservation, but the staff didn't hesitate to seat us early. This was on a Sunday evening, so it wasn't very busy yet. Regardless, our waiter was very attentive (and even had a French accent!), and the staff made sure our water glasses and bread basket remained full. The cost of each dish and the bottles of wine were very reasonable, especially for a DC restaurant, but the quality was excellent. We had the charcuterie starter, lamb chops and hanger steak entrees, and the gelato for dessert. The lamb and steak were cooked to order, seasoned well, and delicious. They even have grappa! I will definitely return to try some of the other dishes (and maybe the escargot).

We were delighted to have been given a table in the back, and the restaurant setting itself was warm and welcome. We ordered the charcuterie and legumes platters as starters; while delicious, they were small and, in the case of the vegetables, over salted. Excess salt also marred my entree, the chicken breast provencale, as well as the hanger steak. No other complaints at the table, however. We were not in a hurry, so the slow service didn't bother us so much but it would've verged on Inattentive had we cared. We may not return, and this has more to do with the quality of food preparation.

We had been to Lavandou twice before at least 10-12 years ago and we loved both the food and the experience. We especially loved their "fall faux gras" which they no longer serve. Instead, they had a "duck pulled meat Pate" which was not good at all. I had the mussels as a main meal and they were nice and plumb but I did not like the broth. My husband said his duck was good as was his onion soup. It was a Monday evening so we did not expect a Friday/Saturday type crowd, but we were one of 3 or 4 tables only. The place itself was clean and decorated well and it certainly was quiet which we had been definitely looking for. We may go back another time just to be fair.
