A word from Lavagna
Lavagna opened its doors on February 1st 1999.The restaurant offers casual Italian trattoria fare at moderate prices. The vibe is candlelit, cozy, with an old wood burning oven, exposed brick walls, a pressed tin ceiling and a small wine bar where one can dine also. A wall of French doors swing open in the warmer weather to a seasonal sidewalk cafe of 20 seats. The kitchen concept is to create dishes traditionally Italian, emphasizing fresh, seasonal ingredients and product of the highest quality. The menu highlights include homemade pastas, a wood oven roasted fish for two, roast pork chop, baby rack of lamb and of course the rigatoni with sweet and spicy sausage that has become a classic over the years. The wine list has been a yearly recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2002 and it focuses on hard to find wines from regional Italy along with other international selections.Continued

My only complaint was the seemingly unfriendly demeanor of the servers - not that they were mean or unattentive. It seemed that some of the staff were angry with each other, and the only person that smiled at us was the guy that checked on our water glasses from time to time! Otherwise, an awesome dining experience, and we will go again when we are back in the city next time."

  • "What a great find in a quiet corner of Alphabet City. But this restaurant isn't good "just" for Alphabet City -- it's certainly one of the finest Italian restaurants in the city. (In fact, it's come to be my favorite.) The menu is creative without being too cute. The food is extra fresh -- lovely fish that's expertly prepared paired with vegetables and other ingredients that taste like they're just off the farm. And the atmosphere of the place is wonderful -- intimate enough for a date, but happening enough to make you feel like you're truly on a night out. Great, nice people who work there, too. (The extra-friendly owner will greet you himself.) Oh, yes, and great drinks. Highly recommended."

The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and provided some good recommendations, especially regarding the fish of the day. (grouper which was cooked perfectly and was very tasty). We enjoyed everything we ordered. Great presentation and quality. I was surprised that the number of pastas on the menu was somewhat limited however, the one we selected (rigatoni) was very good. The pace of service was perfect. Given the food, ambiance and service, i would definitely come back."

The food is terrific, the service unpretentious (though a bit confusing at times---- we saw 4 different servers during the course of our meal). The food was above average, and nicely presented. The only glitch was our exit---- despite the alert we had theater tix at a specific time, our dessert ended up in a go bag. (but panna cotta was terrific once I got it home). I would go again when I have time to merely dine."

We also love the appetizer's but they are small potions and the food isn't great. The Arctic Char was dry last time so I just had pasta this last time.
