A word from Lavagna
Lavagna opened its doors on February 1st 1999.The restaurant offers casual Italian trattoria fare at moderate prices. The vibe is candlelit, cozy, with an old wood burning oven, exposed brick walls, a pressed tin ceiling and a small wine bar where one can dine also. A wall of French doors swing open in the warmer weather to a seasonal sidewalk cafe of 20 seats. The kitchen concept is to create dishes traditionally Italian, emphasizing fresh, seasonal ingredients and product of the highest quality. The menu highlights include homemade pastas, a wood oven roasted fish for two, roast pork chop, baby rack of lamb and of course the rigatoni with sweet and spicy sausage that has become a classic over the years. The wine list has been a yearly recipient of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2002 and it focuses on hard to find wines from regional Italy along with other international selections.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Food, wine, ambiance were all great. Interesting that they emphasized how everything was on the cheaper side, even when mentioning the specials (We look young? But they do have a solid prix fixe situation, so not sure). This definitely wasn't a bad thing, in fact, it was pretty amazing food and the right portion size for us for the price. Fits the reviews/suggestions online. Rabbit pappardelle was fantastic, and my companion loved her rigatoni."

  • "Had a lovely meal in this family run East Village restaurant. Food was tasty, wine list extensive and waiting staff were chatty and welcoming. Would recommend to anyone visiting NYC."

  • "one of my favorites in nyc, the food is consistently very good to great, their wine list is deep and reasonably priced, and the service is attentive and unpretentious. their rigatoni dish may be my favorite pasta dish ever."

  • "I am Italian and I know what Italian food tastes like. This place is run by non-Italians who have no clue about Italian food. There are so many good Italian restaurants in the city. Please avoid this one"

  • "We have been coming to Lavagna for many years and have gotten to know the owner and his staff. The food and service are excellent and consistent. His wine list is interesting and include outstanding mid prices Italian offering and a good selection from non-traditional regions. Yorgi knows how to treat all his patrons like guests in his home."

  • "This was a very small restaurant which made it crowded on valentines day. Also it had a special menu for valentines day that cost us $75 per plate. The food and service were great, but this menu was not listed on the website, so we did not know that it was going to be very pricey for dinner."

  • "The food was fantastic - no run-of-the-mill Italian fare here! My wife and I went here for my birthday, and it was the perfect place for our romantic dinner. My only complaint was the seemingly unfriendly demeanor of the servers - not that they were mean or unattentive. It seemed that some of the staff were angry with each other, and the only person that smiled at us was the guy that checked on our water glasses from time to time! Otherwise, an awesome dining experience, and we will go again when we are back in the city next time."

  • "What a great find in a quiet corner of Alphabet City. But this restaurant isn't good "just" for Alphabet City -- it's certainly one of the finest Italian restaurants in the city. (In fact, it's come to be my favorite.) The menu is creative without being too cute. The food is extra fresh -- lovely fish that's expertly prepared paired with vegetables and other ingredients that taste like they're just off the farm. And the atmosphere of the place is wonderful -- intimate enough for a date, but happening enough to make you feel like you're truly on a night out. Great, nice people who work there, too. (The extra-friendly owner will greet you himself.) Oh, yes, and great drinks. Highly recommended."

  • "Everything was terrific. The host and staff were very nice and accommodating from the moment we arrived. The waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and provided some good recommendations, especially regarding the fish of the day. (grouper which was cooked perfectly and was very tasty). We enjoyed everything we ordered. Great presentation and quality. I was surprised that the number of pastas on the menu was somewhat limited however, the one we selected (rigatoni) was very good. The pace of service was perfect. Given the food, ambiance and service, i would definitely come back."

  • "I used to love this restaurant 3-4 years ago. The menu hasn't really changed but the service has gone way down The waitstaff was inexplicably snobby. The rabbit pappardelle is still the bomb."

  • "This neighborhood gem in the East Village is something special. The food is excellent and the service attentive but not intrusive. I like that they always remember us even though we only visit New York every 4 months or so. We make a point of having dinner here at least once whenever we visit New York City."

  • "The food was delectable - every single bite. The papperdelle pasta with rabbit was unbelievable as was the rigatoni with sausage. The atmosphere itself is very intimate. Highly recommend this place."

  • "The restaurant accommodated my large party on a Friday night, and everything went right from start to finish. The service was seamless and relaxed, the timing was perfect, and we made it to our late theater event exactly on schedule. When two of my guests arrived late for dinner, the waitstaff got to them immediately and brought their food out in record time despite a packed dining room. The vibe was energetic and comfortable, the food and wine were first rate. We were very happy."

  • "It was old world romantic and fantastic food. You can appreciate all the care that the chef has taken with the food. Very interesting combinations of flavors. Everyone in the group raved."

  • "Not much space for the coats, but the food is consistently good. You can put your hat under the chair and take phone pictures. The bar is another worthy peek inside the East Village."

  • "Food was beyond amazing, service was great. Only issue was cramming three grown men into a table for 2, meaning that none of us had any leg room at all and there was no room for that third plate of food. But the food was so good that we would tolerate it again."

  • "I have been dining at Lavagna for almost 15 years and it never loses any of it's charm, ambiance or amazing food. The scallops with parsnip puree and pancetta over brown butter is simply perfect, and the rigatoni with sausage and peas is one of the best pasta dishes in NYC."

  • "It was a wonderful experience. My Uncle who lives in the city highly recommended it, and I was sad when we had to leave! One of the managers waited on us and didn't let our water or wine glasses go dry the entire time. Food was AMAZING and we didn't wait long at all. Definitely will be back!"

  • "Special place, ambiance, service, food, wine and the best Martini's. I knew it would be very good, since it was a recommendation from a very discerning friend; however, the entire experience exceeded our expectations. We hope they will allow us to come back during our next trip to NYC. If you can get a reservation, i highly recommend you partake in this experience allow the wonderful people to serve you."

  • "The food was superb. We thought the fish was totally fresh and the presentation with the flame was an added touch. The pasta was homemade and the sauce was the exact correct portion to dress each component and allow each to stand out."

  • "We were going to the theater around the corner, so this was a logical choice. A nice little surprise, very cozy! The food is terrific, the service unpretentious (though a bit confusing at times---- we saw 4 different servers during the course of our meal). The food was above average, and nicely presented. The only glitch was our exit---- despite the alert we had theater tix at a specific time, our dessert ended up in a go bag. (but panna cotta was terrific once I got it home). I would go again when I have time to merely dine."

  • "We had a very enjoyable evening at Lavagna. The food was delicious. Everyone loved the flavorful risotto. Both the lamb and venison entrees were tender, the atlantic cod nicely prepared. The servers were friendly and attentive to our needs. Lavagna never disappoints!"

  • "The food is pretty average. The best dish is the ravioli but the lamb and the veal are not outstanding, food likes flavor, or is overcooked. I would recommend it for just an average dinner of you are in the neighborhood, not a special occasion."

  • "Although Lavagna has been in our neighborhood for years, it took a recommendation from a friend who moved from New York CIty to finally alert us to its presence. Friendly service, superb food and good drinks are all part of the experience. We are going to go back as soon as we can find any excuse to do so. You can pay a lot more, elsewhere, but you can't get more delicious food."

  • "For our family, Lavagna is a tried and true favorite. Great food, wonderful wine, warm hospitality. Such a simple formula that too few places execute so well and consistently."

  • "We have been coming to Lavagna for the last 5 or 6 years and we always get an excellent meal. Service is always flawless and efficient and, as my foodie daughter says, you never get an "off night" when it comes to the food. Prices are quite reasonable given the high quality and they have a very good wine list with a lot of reasonably priced wonderful wines. What else needs to be said?"

  • "The only friendly person there is Robert and he was on vacation. I think he was the only reason we kept going back. We also love the appetizer's but they are small potions and the food isn't great. The Arctic Char was dry last time so I just had pasta this last time. We brought friends from out of town and were embarrassed by the service from the owner-manager to the waitress."
