A word from Laut
Conveniently located at Union Square, Laut was one of the first Malaysian restaurants to receive a Michelin Star in NY. We focus on bringing the best recipes, dishes and flavors from South East Asia for you. Our goal is to preserve the flavor profiles of each dish, while maintaining the integrity of each cuisine. The only way to achieve that is to recreate them from scratch with regionally authentic spices and the freshest ingredients.

Laut, in Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language), translates to Sea. These straits or seas of these coastal cities played a crucial role in the region’s history, navigating traders and travelers from all over the world.

At Laut, we’ll navigate your palates through an adventurous journey of flavors through our cuisine. Our menu ranges from local favorites, street foods, different curries, spicy & sour broths, satays, noodles, bread (roti), and rice dishes.

Diner Reviews
  • "authentic and tasty - portions for dinner are larger than lunch, so be warned."

  • "A decent place for some South East Asian cuisine like Rendang, KangKung with belacan, Ayam Pangang etc. The level of spiciness (heat) has been dialed back but the food is still good and certainly satisfy my occasional craving for South East Asian cuisine."

  • "The restaurant removed my favorite meal from their menu "prawn mee". In addition there were Mosquitos under their bench seats and I was very badly bitten."

  • "The food was rather salty for my taste and my friend agreed as well. The service was fast and the waiters/waitresses were very courteous. The only concern is that they seem to take the plates off the table very quickly which may come across to some people as rude but I don't think they meant any harm by it. Over all a good experience."

  • "The food here is really good. Special mention for the papaya salad and the coconut pudding dessert. Also, our waiter was the sweetest, friendliest guy (didn't catch his name)."

  • "Food was very tasty, but the squid was a strange shape and texture. Within 5 minutes of finishing mains we were told we needed to go because they had another reservation -- even though we were a reservation and hadn't been there for 70 minutes.... Don't expect to relax."

  • "nice place, friendly staff, good food, reasonable prices"

  • "Had a late night party to attend in the city and was looking for something different. My husband suggested Thai. Through open table we found it. There is no scene, but there is great food. The service was excellent. I cannot remember the dishes we ate, but they were all so good. Except for the fish head stew. That was not so great, but only because we did not know how to eat it. The coconut rice was excellent. They do have alcohol which helps because we like spicy food."

  • "I had reserved a party for 20 people, and the tables were set for us. The food was amazing, service was great. It was a good experience and my friends enjoyed the interior decorations and the food."

  • "I took my boyfriend here because he loves Malaysian food. He said it was so authentic he felt like he was back in Asia, so it wan a winner!"

  • "Very good restaurant ; food is very good , very tasting and unusual. It is a nice experience. Prices are very correct."

  • "Very disappointing with food. I am not sure how do you select restaurants in your list and sometimes your discrpition isn't reliable until you try the place."

  • "food was great and fresh. the Salmon dish was the best. a bit loud and difficult to hear each other"

  • "This was a last minute find for a group of 16 celebrating our CoEd softball championship! [1] They were very accommodating (allowed early arrivals to be seated before the official reservation time) [2] The service was excellent given the size of our group (main server was patient with us as we decided what to eat/drink, checked on us regularly) [3] The food was excellent (though some of us wanted some of the dishes to be MORE spicy! Don't worry... we can handle it!) [4] The cocktails were tasty with some kick (esp the mango mojito!). Food highlights: roti canai, satay skewers, massaman curry, pad kee mao. Many dishes ordered by our party, 0 complaints about the food. A great value & wonderful experience. I highly recommend Laut to all!"

  • "I can't believe that the curry chicken were used with thin chicken slices instead of the pieces of chicken! And the horrible thing is the chicken slices tasted plain and not flesh with heavy fridge flavor, you know even your curry sauce how good it is, it does not help the whole dish! This really makes the restaurant look very cheap...I mean the food..It takes not so much cost on using pieces of chicken, but it will let the food look much more perfect."

  • "Good and interesting asian food with good service. The noise level was too high for us to enjoy anything. We were so relieved to get out. This is a good neighborhood restaurant for the young at heart and hearing. I might return again for lunch if I am in the neighborhood."

  • "Malaysian, Vietnamese, Singapore, Thai - what is it? It is all amazing. The servers could not be friendlier and the food is a riot of wonderful cultures. We really mixed it up and loved it all. If you want Asian variety this is your place. The restaurant is truly vibrant but totally fun."

  • "Had a reservation for four at 6:45 and was seated right away. We stayed over two hours and ordered 4 courses of deliciousness. Definitely go for the five spice pork roll, kang kong and laksa. "

  • "The food was very good with a selection of Thai, Polynesian and Indian food. The service was pleasant and timely. Unfortunately there was a large group of about 10 people whose chatter dominated the noise level of this cozy restaurant and made it hard for the five of us to hear each other. We would go again when there are only small groups of diners."

  • "My fav South East Asian food place currently. the beef rendang is great and fried rice with Chinese sausage. Curries are just ok. The roti was rather thin & the lattice roti is impossible to eat as not enough of it to dip in the sauce. pad Thai did not have much of the chicken in it and wAs quite disappointing. This is the most basic Thai dish you can find in a place. Even though we had a booking, we still had to wait over 15mins for our table. Would still come back though, until I find somewhere better/more authentic. "

  • "Food is good at Laut. However our server rushed us, he was very impatient and then ignored us for the remainder of our meal. He ruined the whole experience for us. The other staff was fine but they really need to train all their staff to give their customers a good experience, specially the ones that mainly deal with the customer."

  • "Delicious dishes, decent prices for lunch. Told my gf that their dishes had lots of wok-heat, which means that chef really does a good job w/ the wok and leaves the dishes well cooked and fresh w/ flavor enhanced by heat. Cuisine is malaysian thai etc and the staff speak cantonese chinese. if you are not a purest who balks at fusion asian, then this place might be for you. Lunch dishes are on small side. Thai ice tea is wonderful."

  • "I arrived before my date and I sat down to look at the menu - I asked the waiter what a Hard Thai Iced Tea was, and he made me one just to try before committing! Turns out that it was delicious and I of course ended up ordering it. The food was great, too - highly recommend the Tom Kha soup for appetizer and the drunk man noodles!"

  • "The quality of the food is not much better than the ordinary Thai restaurant. But the prices are higher."

  • "Amazing authentic food. Cool vibe. The roti appetizer is a must try."

  • "Many of the menu items were typical of what you would find when visiting Malaysia. The Beef Rendang was cooked to perfection...taste wise and tenderness. The spiciness level could have been cooked more to a person's desired level. I had asked for mine to be spicy. Others at the table who also had Beef Rendang did not ask for it to be prepared spicy. Seemed we all had a similar spice level. Every table was filled. That may be a reason the wait staff seemed very rushed, not really spending time when we were placing our orders. I was surprised, considering how busy the restaurant was, that our dishes arrived very quickly. Overall the food was excellent, which is probably one of the most important things when dining out."

  • "Very nice selection of Malaysian dishes, and very authentic taste (toned down for Western palates but still like home). Their Rendang was extremely flavorful, and though the gravy was more liquidy (like curry) then traditional rendang, it was among the best we have had in the USA. The Fish Head curry was also a treat, very flavorful, nicely prepared, and sufficiently spicy (not quite to the level of Malaysia but certainly to American tastes). Even the Teh Tarik (pulled tea) was excellent, though a bit mahal (this is New York after all). As a native Malaysian, and married to an American with a Malay soul (and palate), we found this a place to come back to whenever in NYC. Prices very reasonable, service superb, first-rate overall. "

  • "Make a reservation before you come here, it's very small and fills up fast. The service is mediocre probably because they're so busy, but the food is delicious and there's a lot of variety in beverages. My friends and I had a great time, the food is moderately priced and we all agreed we'd come back again. If the service was a bit better that would make it an even better experience."

  • "Went with a few friends from out of town and was pleasantly surprised with the flavors and menu options. The Roti Canai is always a favorite appetizer for newcomers. Because Malaysian restaurants are not easily found, it's great to have this restaurant to go to whenever we go into NYC."

  • "This is a really nice place for above average Thai. Beautiful ambiance and the food is better than most. I'd go back. Fair prices."

  • "Though many reviews were glowing (including one that described Laut as the best Malaysian-Indonesian restaurant in NYC), we found it to be woefully lacking. While the food was o.k., the service was atrocious, with a pushy waitress who seemed intent on moving us out as fast as possible. Having read that Laut was BYOB, we stopped at a nearby wine shop and brought wine. The minute we sat down, the waitress said, "you have to pay $20 per bottle." I replied that we had read that Laut was a BYOB.... she said, "not now... too bad." The food: strangely spiced, with one dish being just downright unpleasant. Our waitress brought our check and took our money BEFORE we were even finished dining. OH, Laut was deafening in its noise level. Disappointing"

  • "If you like authentic Asian food, then head to Laut. My laksa took me right back to Singapore and the Gado Gado was just like in Malaysia. We loved our lunch and will definitely return to try other things. And another note: the restaurant was packed and that's always a good sign. Plus the waiters were really friendly and helpful."

  • "Wonderful food as always. Reminds me of my trip to Southeast Asia. There was a middle-aged waiter who made our night. He had huge eyes and was so eager to serve us. We couldn't help but laugh every time he came to our table. My friends and I almost wanted to ask him to join us for drinks after just so we could hang out with him more."
