A word from Laut
Conveniently located at Union Square, Laut was one of the first Malaysian restaurants to receive a Michelin Star in NY. We focus on bringing the best recipes, dishes and flavors from South East Asia for you. Our goal is to preserve the flavor profiles of each dish, while maintaining the integrity of each cuisine. The only way to achieve that is to recreate them from scratch with regionally authentic spices and the freshest ingredients.

Laut, in Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language), translates to Sea. These straits or seas of these coastal cities played a crucial role in the region’s history, navigating traders and travelers from all over the world.

At Laut, we’ll navigate your palates through an adventurous journey of flavors through our cuisine. Our menu ranges from local favorites, street foods, different curries, spicy & sour broths, satays, noodles, bread (roti), and rice dishes.

  • "Though many reviews were glowing (including one that described Laut as the best Malaysian-Indonesian restaurant in NYC), we found it to be woefully lacking. While the food was o.k., the service was atrocious, with a pushy waitress who seemed intent on moving us out as fast as possible. Having read that Laut was BYOB, we stopped at a nearby wine shop and brought wine. The minute we sat down, the waitress said, "you have to pay $20 per bottle." I replied that we had read that Laut was a BYOB.... she said, "not now... too bad." The food: strangely spiced, with one dish being just downright unpleasant. Our waitress brought our check and took our money BEFORE we were even finished dining. OH, Laut was deafening in its noise level. Disappointing"

  • "If you like authentic Asian food, then head to Laut. My laksa took me right back to Singapore and the Gado Gado was just like in Malaysia. We loved our lunch and will definitely return to try other things. And another note: the restaurant was packed and that's always a good sign. Plus the waiters were really friendly and helpful."

  • "Very busy and colorful, casual decor - I liked the mural on one of the walls. But the food wasn't particularly complex for such an interesting cuisine. Packed to the gills with quick turnaround - I think a lot of people there for their special groupon menu. Waitstaff was friendly enough, but the atmosphere definitely didn't encourage lingering. The meal was serviceable, and we were eager to move on."

I had the TOM KHA Spicy coconut milk soup (with VEGGIES) and SAMBAL Okra, with eggplant, string beans, bell peppers, onions and spicy chili shrimp paste sauce (with VEGGIES also). As a Malaysian, it hurt to pay NYC prices for Malaysian food but the food did taste authentic. There are cheaper Malaysian restaurants in Chinatown but Laut is just as good if you're looking to stay in the Union Square area."

  • "It's not often I get to visit a Malaysian restaurant since I don't live nearby to one, and I don't feel like making the trek to one. With Laut near my office, boy was I excited to try it out! There's not a day that goes by that I don't miss Malaysian food, and it's definitely not the same compared to being in Malaysia but Laut does a pretty good job - especially for a restaurant not in Chinatown. I had the roti canai which is decent and the curry laksa which was very delicious and hit the spot on this extremely wintry day. In addition, also had the tom yum soup which is aromatic but could be more spicier. Atmosphere was lively and lacking in pretentiousness, good for meeting with friends. Service was quick to the draw. I'll be back soon!"

  • "Ate off the lunch special menus. Great deals, good amount of food for the price ($10-12). Accommodating to vary spice level (I ordered the green curry extra mild and my coworker ordered it extra spicy) but not to substitutions of any ingredients. The service was friendly and efficient. Unfortunately, we were asked to vacate our table as there were people waiting (but this was done very politely and after we had finished and paid and were just sitting around chatting), not during our meal at all. The food came out quickly but we didn't feel rushed at all. Food seemed fresh and was flavorful. Would return."

  • "My friend and I love Asian food alot and it's been years since we had Malaysian food. We decided to try Laut . And we had a very nice dining experience. The exotic cocktail drinks were really refresh. We had 2 appetizers: roti telur and pork barbecue roll. Tasty and quite filling actually. For our main entrees, we had the soft shell crab chili(with steam mantou) and the crispy red snapper. Very flavorful. And for desserts, we tried to be adventurous so we had the pulut inti and the peanut pancake with vanilla ice cream. Interesting yet good. But they do not serve coffee :( The place was packed. The decor was minimalistic. The service was amazing. We had two attentive and friendly waitresses. We will definitely dine at Laut again."

Favorites were the Tandoori Kebab, Papaya Salad and Snapper - even though it was a mistake, since we ordered the chicken. The worst part was the service. Our dinner reservation was at 8:30PM and by 9:20 the check was dropped, without even asking us if we wanted dessert. We sent the check back, ordered dessert and again within minutes the check was dropped. There were still 3 other tables in the restaurant, eating and everyone had a check on the table. I observed the expression on the other patrons faces, where were equally annoyed with their push to get us out of there. Stop being so pushy!"

  • "Overall I had a nice experience. My food wasn't the best. The quality of the food was good, but I was supposed to have a dish wish a spicy paste and the dish was VERY bland. My friend's food was very good. I felt very rushed by the wait staff coming into the restaurant, eating my meal, and when it was time to leave. I understand that they were crowded, but there was no need for me to feel as rushed as they did. I even made a reservation beforehand and came on time. I was surprised how small the restaurant was also. I might come back."

  • "I was dining at Laut after more than three years again and still consider it a must when traveling to New York. The food is outstanding as it was three years ago, however, the wine list was notably shorter this time. The choice of pan-asian dishes was and still is remarkable even if I end up ordering Laut's signature Rotis and Fried Rice and Noodles dishes. The atmosphere is best described as cosy but not in the sense of intimate as you are literally sitting shoulder to shoulder with the patrons at the next table so do not take your date there. All in all an experience one should not miss when in New York."

  • "This is the worst service I have ever experienced. I had a large party (10 people) and the reservation was at 6:30. At 6:32 the restaurant called to see where I was - I was around the corner. When I walked in they said that if my entire party wasn't here at 6:40 that they would give my table away. They rushed us through ordering our meal, they rushed us through eating, and then they didn't even ask if we wanted dessert... they just gave us the check. There is no way I am coming back here. If they didn't have the space or time for us, they should have said that up front (i.e. "We have another large party coming in at 8pm who needs this table. Is that ok with you?"), or they should have not let us book the table."

The waiter made some great suggestions as to appetizers and entrees. Appetizers included the pork roll, spring rolls, the roti canai with sauce (spicey) [all good] and the chicken satay (unfortunately marinated to the point of mushy). The grilled chicken was probably our favorite entree, followed by Rendang and Curry Laksa."
