A word from Laurier Lounge
This 100 year old heritage building was the boyhood home of George F.G. Stanley, designer of our Canadian flag. It is a very casual eclectic restaurant where the food is excellent but not pretentious and their standards are extremely high. When you enter the upstairs dining room you can see why it has won awards for best 'romantic' and best 'first date', as well as 'best fondue experience'. This is an establishment, tucked into the heart of urban Calgary, where you can enjoy an intimate meal, just kick back in the comfortable bar, or spend the day on one of the coziest and sunniest patios in town.Continued

  • "Warm welcome upon arrival. Good choice of menu. We usually have Beef Fondue, decided to try the Beef Bourguignon this time, good choice. Delicious! The Escargots also one of our favorites."

  • "i brought my hubby here for his birthday dinner. food was amazing. only thing was they ran out of the steak tar tar, which we were told after we ordered it, and were really looking forward to ordering it. our faves were the bruschetta and the poutine. we met an older couple sitting next to us, had a wonderful conversation with them. when we asked for our bill, our server informed us that the couple had paid for our bill, tip and all!! they were already gone, so we couldn't thank them. it totally made our night. we will definitely be back. -angela"

  • "We have been to the Laurier numerous times for lunch however this is probably the last time we will go. They continually change their menu and I was expecting to see the menu that was on their website the day that I made my reservation however in the two days in between, it had changed and now funny, so has their site. I am not interested in a 'sharing' lunch nor am I interested in paying $15.50 for a hamburger. That's right, it was just the hamburger...you want a side, it's extra. One might chalk up the empty dining room due to the weather on this day but I'm not so sure."

  • "Came here after looking for fondue in calgary. Was very delighted. Chesse fondue was some of the best I have had. Service was good. I dont envy the waitress for having to walk up and down those stairs though. Because of the price I won't be going often but it is a great place for a special occasion. Alcohol is a little overpriced at least 60% mark up. I feel like this could be adjusted a bit."

  • "We appreciated the ambience and service. However our beef fondue lacked seasoning, but after we were provided some salt it improved. I think I would like to try the cheese fondue next time. Dessert was amazing."

  • "Been to Laurier Lounge many times for brunch so this was a first in the evening. Fondue was top-notch! Loved it:)"

  • "Being new to town, we learned about the Laurier Lounge while browsing the Big Taste website. While many other restaurants offered lunch or dinner specials of chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, or spaghetti, we found the offering of a three course fondue dinner more original and enticing. We weren't sure what to expect of the restaurant, given that fondue is often viewed as some cheesy (pun intended) throwback to the 1970s. However, the restaurant was lovely, having excellent warmth and ambiance. In addition, the service and dining experience was excellent. My wife and I plan to return in the future and perhaps we will delve deeper into what appeared to be an interesting menu and deep wine list."

  • "1)We were seated and then asked to move. 2)Moved upstairs to a cramped corner table where the roof meets the wall with low clearance. 3)A couple next to us, was seated after us and ordered the same though they received all their food and drinks before we did, and we had the same server! 4)The fondue flame went out, so we tried to get the attention of our server, while another chatted up his friends at a table for several minutes. 5)Eventually got up and approached the server, who brought us a new burner. 6)We ordered $100 worth of wine with our meals and had a great time with the exception of the poor service. Not the best date night exp but it was still very good food."

  • "First time at the Laurier and we were drawn in by one of our faves: fondue. Portions were a good size, in fact, we could not even finish the chocolate fondue. The cheese fondue was tasty, but not as flavourful as it could be. The beef fondue was somewhat lacking in taste, however, it was a nice touch to have a baked potato. Chocolate fondue was the best of the 3. The restaurant itself was a little too casual and eclectic. It was very cool how the rooms are divided - I think we were eating in one of the former bedrooms. Our server was attentive without being overbearing. But the tables are too close together and very casual in the decor. We won't be back, but if you enjoy a very casual fine dining experience, this is the place for you."

  • "Never heard of the Laurier Lounge until it participated in this year's Big Taste YYC. It's a neighbourhood gem, with wonderfully comforting food, especially the tasty maple pudding made in-house by the owner's Québécois mother. The waitress, Mylene (sp?) was very nice and friendly. I've become accustomed to service with attitude in Calgary but service at the Laurier Lounge was friendly and memorable. I will most definitely return for the food AND the service. Merci beaucoup!"

  • "We went here for the Big Taste menu, which was their 3 course fondue, Cheese - Beef - Chocolate. I must say the cheese fondue was done amazingly well, just the right amount of white wine and garlic without over powering the wonderful flavour of the the cheeses. The Beef fondue was tasty as well and I liked the idea of cooking it in a broth rather than oil. The absolute best part of the meal was the chocolate fondue, I think it is some of the BEST chocolate I have ever had (and I have had my fair share of quality chocolate fondue having lived in Switzerland), I wanted to lick the bowl clean!! Would come back again most definitely"

  • "I've heard a lot about Laurier Lounge and their fondue so I decided to try it during the Big Taste. The dessert fondue was fantastic, cheese fondue was decent, but the beef fondue was fairly bland. I would rather make it at home to be honest. Service was fantastic, great presentation - very polite and a great atmosphere, but I don't think I'll be back."

  • "We had a group of six on the main floor next to the bar. The room is not too large and the noise level was quite low which allowed us to converse easily. We ordered three of the three course fondues and the table suited sharing very well. The server was very professional, timed our courses perfectly, with just the right time between to get ready for the next. We took advantage of taking our own wine and paying the corkage fee - the restaurant and server were both very accommodating with this. If you enjoy fondue, look no further than Laurie Lounge in Calgary - it is the best."

  • "First tried French fondue ! Like it ... It was a good experience ! Cheese , beef n chocolate fondue ! Like beef fondue the most! Definitely will come again ;) Only thing I don't like it ...the room we were sitting was too crowded!"

  • "The food was good. Sadly, the service left a lot for me to be desired. For a bistro so highly rated, I would've expected far more professionalism in my server, but sadly that appears to not be a priority for this place. I spent a great deal of my evening staring at an empty water glass, had to ask for fresh cutlery after my appetizer, then had to ask for clean cutlery. The server was appropriately apologetic, but it added to the overall lackadaisical attitude that I felt. This is a shame because the food was quite tasty. I would recommend this place... but save it for a Sunday, when the other bistros are closed."

  • "We made a reservation the other night to celebrate our anniversary. We had the fondue for two and a half litre of pinot noir. The wine was delicious, and every course of the fondue was amazing as well! I have no complaints about the quality of the food as everything exceeded expectations and was very flavorful. All the fondue was the right temperature. The only thing I would change is the portion of beef served with the main. I was stuff at the end of the meal, but my partner was still hungry. He could probably have eaten that portion of meat on his own and he felt a little ripped off for the price we paid. However, the ambiance was lovely and the candle at our table was a nice touch. The restaurant is an old house, so the tables were close"

  • "From the devilled eggs, to the bacon wrapped figs, moving on to the fondue and glorious beef and seafood entree, the finale was the hot chocolate cake that was to die for! Really some of the most excellent food we've had in Calgary ever! Great service, nice sincere waitress who wasn't in your face or too aggressive and most certainly not the cheesy waiter routine we get elsewhere, she was always there to fill a glass and didn't hover. It was just a peaceful evening and the ambience was great with the old house and charming decor. I'm not too fond of the lime green so maybe a couple of small reno improvements including more comfortable cushions on the benches but that wouldn't stop me from going back."

  • "My husband and I went to Laurier for the first time to celebrate Valentine`s Day. It was listed as one of the top 10 Romantic restaurants in Calgary. The setting IS romantic in an old converted house (lots of character) and the dim lighting with candles on the tables helps to set the mood. Unfortunately, the tables are very close together, so this does not lend to a quiet and private conversation. The food was delicious though and very well presented. We ordered from the `a la carte`menu, but will go back to try the fondue."

  • "The restaurant itself has the perfect cozy yet sheik vibe. Upstairs, the lounge I'm assuming it was where we were seated had lovely atmosphere yet tightly packed. The food was great. We had the fondue experience but all the other menu items looked great as well. A little pricey for a casual dinner but well worth it for the quality of food and for special occasions. The service was great as well."

  • "Service was excellent however this was overshadowed by the freezing cold food. Warren Buffet burger was good however the poutine was freezing cold. The French croissant had two pieces of grizzled meat on it which was unfortunate. We will try LL again but maybe for dinner instead of lunch. Too bad. It's a nice quaint place."

  • "My food was excellent (the vegetarian option: Boulangere potato, filled with apples and pears, goat cheese, white beans and pumpkin mousse $25), while my husband found his Prime Beef Bourguignon pretty run of the mill for $32. With these prices, I would have enjoyed the other 1/2 of my potato. The prices are upscale for such a casual restaurant."

  • "My hubby and I really enjoyed this cute little restaurant in an old house near downtown Calgary. Excellent service and a great fondue experience. Loved the beef fondue in onion broth rather than oil and the chocolate fondue was to die for! Wonderful dinner all around!"

  • "We've dined at Laurier a few times now, and were excited to try the restaurant again now there's a new chef. And the food IS really good. Too bad a restuarant isn't only about the food. Our corner was so dark that we had to use our tiny tealight to read the menu. Halfway through dinner, our tealight ran out, plunging us literally into darkness. Service was sporadic, with long, slow periods between courses, which was fine as we were not in any hurry, but seemingly attentive each time we were halfway through our plates, giving us the impression that we were being hurried through our courses. And finally, although this is not the fault of the restaurant, there was a crying baby. So, the food was good but the ambiance could use improvement."

  • "The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. It's in an old house so it has a very cozy ambience. The food was excellent and there is a nice selection of wine to go with everything. It would be a nice place to meet for drinks after work, too but you'd be missing out if you didn't eat."

  • "Wonderful time -- didn't want it to end -- service was quick and very professional -- very friendly staff -- felt like you were visiting friends at their home. Food was simply amazing/delicious! The bouillabaisse was superb -- hint of saffron made it especially tasteworthy. Outstanding dining experience!"

  • "A hidden gem, Lauriers wathe complete package. The food was fantastic, we had the fondue for two. The service was impeccable! He took care of us from the moment we walked in. I would definately recommend anybody to eat here."

  • "Went for NYE. Fondue was great. Remember it's an experience, not just dinner so took three hours total. Enjoyed the seafood one the most. Loved the tomato broth instead of oil. Fondue was served with a baked potato and raw veggies as well for cooking. Wine list is good. Disappointed with two beers ordered, one was unavailable, other one hadn't been chilled. Also not impressed with the $1.75 charge pp for "still" water poured from refillable water bottles. Small rooms throughout the space created a nice ambiance. Would definitely recommend it."

  • "When I wanted to celebrate a major accomplishment with one of my staff memebers they suggested Laurier Lounge. I looked at their menu on line and as I'm a vegan I saw nothing on the menu that was paticularly appealing. When we ordered our food I asked the waiter if they could make me a sandwich by taking a bun and throwing on all the veggies, onions and pickles etc. they had and then, of course, I'd like some fries with that. They not only did that but they grilled some of the veggies to make the sandwich more tasty. Only complaint is they do not have any whole wheat or multi grain buns."
