Diner Reviews
  • "La Salette has the best combination of flavors, great choices and beautifully presented. The service matches the exceptional food. This is among the best in the bay area."

  • "After being on the road for several weeks and eating at many restaurants, we were yearning for something totally different. We saw this option on Open Table and checked the website menu. How unusual! A contemporary twist on Portuguese food. We ate outside on a lovely evening and were warmly received. The wine list was also quite different and we needed help with a choice. As for the food, we each started with the roasted red pepper soup - most delicious! Dinner, we chose a sampler of octopus, sardines, escargo, pig ears, pig feet pate, anchovies, and a few other items. What a combination of different flavors. We wanted unusual fare from the typical French, Italian, American, etc. and we got it here. It's a place to definitely try!"

  • "This place is a gem. Don't miss the cod cake appetizer(best I've ever had)or the asparagus and egg salad. Equally charming inside and outside dining. Try the Esporao wine."

  • "We began eating at La Salette 15 years ago when it opened in another location, and it moved to the Sonoma Town Square area soon afterwards. Interesting Portuguese favorites, many involving fish, shellfish and bacalao (salted codfish), as well as scrumptious short ribs and pork dishes. All are beautifully and artistically presented by a warm and friendly staff, eager to help diners make menu and wine selections. Try the Portuguese wine varietal tastings, at $14.00 for 3 whites or 3 reds, or they also have local wines along with a house red and white at $6.50 if your pocketbook doesn't support $10-12 a glass. Organ meats such as tongue, pigs ears and sweetbreads are offered for those who like to experiment with ethnic specialties."

  • "Having experienced wonderful restaurants in and around Napa, my expectations for a restaurant in Sonoma were high. First, making, then changing, my reservation was easy. However, changing from four people to five required a credit card, $40.00 per person cancellation fee unless given a 24 hour notice. Appetizer portions are very small. My daughter had the steak which was only okay, my scallop-pasta dish was good if a bit oily. My sister and nephew had the Fisherman's Stew. The taste was good but the portion small. Service was prompt without being obtrusive however, every person who bussed our table dropped something. The clatter of dropped utensils was constant throughout our meal. The menu is for the adventurous so check it before going."

  • "Not knowing Portuguese food or wine, we approached La Salette as an adventure. We ordered the red and white flights of Portuguese wines, a number of small plates, and a couple of starters. Escargot was completely original, a smoky paprika taste instead of simple garlic butter, Wonderful pork ears, marvelously flavorful and tender beef tongue. Friendly servers explained unfamiliar flavors and spices and cheered on the adventure. A port flight and chocolate sampler ended the evening on a rich, sweet note. Truly wonderful experience."

  • "If you want great food, perfect service by the dining staff, put LaSalette on the top of a list of your go to place. Never disappoints."

  • "Lovely, understated restaurant well back from the hustle and bustle of the plaza. Very attentive service. Salads were ultra fresh and very tasty. Fisherman's stew was full of fresh seafood and fish in a broth that you wanted to slurp up every drop. . if you weren't so full. Lamb loin was a series of different food experiences, from the tender meat to the insanely flavored pureed potates to the fresh vegetables."

  • "I had to call and re-schedule our 6:30pm reservation to 6:45pm, due to an accident. When we arrived at 6:50pm, I explained that my 74-yr-old aunt had taken a terrible fall, to which the hostess replied by scolding us like children, stating our reservation was at 6pm and that now it was "nearly 7". My aunt graciously requested we sit at the bar. Thankfully, our waitress was a gem! And other staff were polite. The white bean/fennel soup settled my aunt's stomach. The crab crepes were decent. And the pork loins with fig pureed was delicious. The evening was thankfully salvaged, but quite honestly, had it not been for my amazingly positive, and dignified aunt, I would have walked out and given this restaurant zero stars."

  • "Cute place off Sonoma square. Fisherman stew was excellent. Lamb was also good. Service started off shaky, literally stood in front of the hostess for 5 minutes before she walked away without acknowledging us. Upon return she informed us that we would have to wait for 20 minutes before we got our table. After informing her we had a reservation we were seated immediately. Food was excellent; cooked and seasoned very well. Shrimp in the stew was not peeled or deveined head. Not a big deal but would have been nice so I didn't have to use my hands."

  • "Amazing Portuguese food! I have walked past this little restaurant dozens of times over the years as it is tucked in at the back of a small alley. Started with the Sampler Plate, had Sea Bass and then finished with a cheese course. The fish was presented whole, garnished simply with a few roasted potatoes, olives and chopped tomatoes - and was cooked perfectly. Great wine list too. I will be heading back soon!"

  • "We were ignored by the wait staff and finally a server begrudgingly came to our table (the usual "that's not my table - who's is it?" grumbling was heard) BUT WAIT - even with that demerit, this was a find in the back alleys of Sonoma town. We were familiar with Portuguese cooking and were in the mood for some bacalhau and patatas. This place took traditional Lusitania fare to interesting places. Whilst retaining its comfort food status! My bacalhau fritters were yummy and they paired it with the perfect white Portuguese wine. Everything served was perfectly done - a little old school but that fit the comfie food vibe. Oh, and yes, once the staff realized the faux pas, they rectified the situation & made us feel quite appreciated."

  • "The restaurant has been in business for around 15 years. They have to be doing something right for this to happen. For us, it was the adventure of eating unique foods with nice flavors, like their fried pigs ears."

  • "Iberian food, presented well. so many choices to start. the tripe was a hit ( where else can you say that? ) but the fish dishes are as good as you'll find anywhere. first time there.....will not be my last."

  • "LaSalette is a wonderful little restaurant tucked into a sunny corner of downtown Sonoma. The food is always outstanding and the service is pleasant, knowledgeable and always happy to see you. Portuguese cooking is their specialty and you discover spices and preparation techniques that you've never tried before. And don't forget to have their Sangria; you'll ask for more. Dining can be either inside in their charming restaurant or outside on the sunny patio. The perfect place to dine when you are strolling the streets of Sonoma and enjoying the beauty of our Wine country."

  • "This was my second time here in three weeks. I couldn't believe how delicious the food, great the service, yet the place wasn't packed. This time we both had the whole, fresh sea bass. Magnificent! And that prceded by perfect mussels. Although it's slightly hidden away, it's morec than worth seeking out!"

  • "I love this place..........I'm Portuguese and it's hard to find any restaurants that do my "home cooking" justice. La Salette does just that."

  • "Our first vist to LaSalette and we were not disappointed. A great selection of small appetizers and the starters were terrific. Also nice wine flights. Desserts were notable! Great place for lunch and we can't wait to go back for dinner."

  • "The food was bland and expensive. We both had fish. I had grouper that was under cooked. We had appetizer that was good and husband had a beer. No dessert. Cost was not warranted. Overall, disappointing."

  • "We had a fabulous meal at La SaLette Restaurant. The service was attentive and professional, the food fabulous! The space inside is a little small and can get a little noisy, but it did not distract us from having a wonderful meal and planning to return again. Thank you."

  • "My wife and I really enjoyed our recent visit--our first--to La Salette. We arrived about 45 minutes before our reservation time. The hostess graciously seated us anyway. While we are not too experienced with Portuguese cuisine, the menu was very appealing and contained sufficient appetizers, entrees and desserts to appeal to just about anyone's taste and preferences. The servers were very friendly, knowledgeable about the menu items, and able to explain the day's specials in detail. The food was outstanding in presentation and taste, and portion size was very appropriate. We are not often in the Sonoma area, but we will definitely drop in the next time we are."

  • "What a warm, wonderful spot on a very rainy night with exceptional service. First, the server brought a plate with 3 small bites, linguica topped with melted cheese & an olive, followed by warm, delicious rolls. The three of us each tried a different wine flight, two Portuguese, one local Sonoma. All proved delightful. My two friends each had the asparagus, fried egg salad (really tasty); one added sides of fingerling potatoes and a roasted corn dish; the other ordered the mussels. I opted for the small plate choices including some superb white anchovies. We shared it all with barely a morsel left. No dessert (too full) but did enjoy a small, complimentary chocolate hazelnut truffle. Rush to make reservations & don't miss this place!"

  • "Awesome find! Great service. Excellent biscuits and the fisherman's stew was to die for. Be sure and try the "frigid but hot" ice creams and sorbets for dessert. The chocolate piri piri is an noteworthy experience. We will be back again soon!"

  • "The food was incredible but the portions are small for the amount they charge. The tables are very close to each other and the atmosphere is rushed. It was good but I won't go back."

  • "LaSalette has a varied menu and some fantastic wines. Try the white or red Portuguese flights for something different. The house specials are incredible; we were served a whole sea bass with the head and tail still on...a little challenging to debone at a tight table for four but we all managed rather well. Although we were quite full from the salads (which cover a full range of tastes) and the entree, we shared one dessert which also arrived as a trio of sweets. A wonderful experience all around."

  • "Food and service are excellent. The location is small and almost romantic - especially if you can sit outside (which has been a real possibility in California this winter)... From beginning to end, the meal was great - my wife and I both ordered the Bronzino/Sea Bass - delicious. The service is very local and very down to earth and understated... And for restaurants, it's relatively quiet. LaSalette has been around for many years? 10? 15? but it remains a hidden gem off the Sonoma Plaza..."

  • "Our birthday meal was outstanding. My mom wanted to order the fish of the day, but was a little reluctant of the "whole" fish idea. The server asked the chef to remove the head and bones. He agreed. The dish was delicious!! My sixteen year old son said it was the most tender steak he had ever had. All in all, perfect dinner."

  • "We've enjoyed two lunchtime experiences at La Salette, each one delicious and well-presented. The menu is unusual in that the dishes vary from the typical Mediterranean fare seen in so many Northern California restaurants. There are classics, to be sure, but also perfectly cooked smoked tongue, salt cod, as well as an eclectic array of small bites to create a 'starter' plate. All served by a friendly, efficient staff in a cheery setting. We'll be back!"

  • "This was my husband and my second time eating at La Salette, during one of our wine country weekend visits. We opted for sitting at the bar this time - as their reservations seem to book up fairly quickly. This visit I had some dietary restrictions - the "beginning of the year month-long cleanse" - and they were able to accommodate my gluten-free, dairy-free, low-carb, sauce-free request. I'm not used to being a picky eater, but the server was able to provide excellent recommendations and worked with me without batting an eye. Will definitely return on our next visit!"

  • "My husband chose this restaurant for a special last meal before our daughter heading back to college after the holidays. We are definitely a food loving family and are generally adventurous eaters. The restaurant was beautiful, had great ambiance, good service. However we were dissappointed with our meal. None of us liked what we ordered. For some they didn't like the flavors and others the food didn't have a lot of flavor. I feel bad saying this because I really wanted to add this restaurant to our list of places to go in Sonoma but I feel it's important to tell the truth. We might give it another try at some point just to see if maybe we had an off night."

  • "What a delicious meal and the service was great! My husband had the tongue and said it was the most tender that he's ever had. The sea bass was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside..wonderful plate of food. Don't miss this spot."
