Diner Reviews
  • "Las Palomas hosted Tequila512 founder Scott Willis, to guide diners through a three-course dinner with Tequila512 pairings. It was a fun affair. Guest sat at community tables and had an opportunity to make new friends and discuss the wonderful meal. The Tequila 512 was paired with an appetizer, an entree and then dessert. Everyone learned a lot about the tequila making process."

  • "The chicken mole is the best! The chicken enchiladas filled with fluffy white chicken and perfect tortillas to boot! wonderful!!"

  • "Mexico's famed cuisine, which is very different from the taco stand variety, is one of the outstanding cuisines of Latin America, rivalled only, perhaps, by Peruvian cuisine. Las Palomas brings this important culinary tradition to Austin, and meals there never disappoint. The atmosphere is pleasant, and often there is the added benefit of live music. Altogether, a huge asset for Austin. "

  • "I came in to pass a couple of hours away. Sat at the bar where Jeff and Ben were bar tending. They helped me deside in an apitizer and made be the best margarita I ever had. I will come back and bring friends."

  • "Love coming here because it doesn't feel like Austin. It feels like a quiet little neighborhood Tex-Mex place in West Houston. Instead of long waits and trendy hipsters, I can always walk in, sit right down at a table, and usually be surrounded by families and middle-aged couples. Sometimes it's nice for everything not to have to be so cool all the time. That's hard to find in this city. The food is good too. There are better Mexican spots in town, but Las Palomas gets the job done. Sangria-swirl frozen margaritas are my go-to."

  • "On Saturday evenings, they have live music. This reinforces the Mexican food culture. However, we came to have a nice conversation. The music was intrusive for us."

  • "From online pictures, thought it would be nicer inside..........very typical Mexican look. Food choices were great but nothing special in taste and service was only mediocre. Would go there in nice weather to sit outside, have a drink and some appetizers. Will not return for lunch or dinner eating."

  • "I really like this place. The mole and Verdi sauces are great. I had salamon which was good. Our waiter was a bit curt but other than that we enjoyed ourself."

  • "We had a reservation for dinner on Valentine's Day. I am vegetarian and was told there would be vegetarian options (like cheese enchiladas). The special menu had no veggie options. When I asked about the cheese enchiladas I was told they could not do that. They offered grilled bell peppers, squash and onions as my entree. No thanks....so we left."

  • "I find Las Palomas as a great place for bigger parties and better as a lunch place. For Valentine's, it was a disappointment for several reasons. I had requested a quiet table for two though this request is was likely impossible because the entire restaurant is noisy and energetic with a big crowd. The set menu was OK for the price. We enjoyed the appetizer, main course and dessert with the "complimentary" glass of Prosseco, but the service was rushed giving the feeling that we were to eat and leave to make our table available for the next party. There was confusion because the bar menu was on the table featuring daily specials, but when asked for them, the waiter said they were not available because of the special menu for Valentine's"

  • "Excellent valentines dinner. Love the owner MariCarmen. Only slight complaint, our server seemed VERY new. ( serving men first, glasses in wrong location, never cleared table.) but very pleasant and quick."

  • "Food was fine. We were seated at a table near the band and it was difficult to talk with the other people at our table. Our waiter told us the restaurant policy was to not provide separate checks."

  • "We made a reservation for a party of 6 at 7:15 so we could see a 9 pm movie. They don't actually reserve a table for anyone. We waited for > 30 minutes for a table just as if we walked in. Food was good and waiter did a good job of pushing the order - but the experience dampened the dinner."

  • "On New Year's Eve, we passed on the superb paella because we'd had it the week before. My wife had salmon chipolte and I had the steak and shrimp. Both were excellent. We had a new waiter, not one of our regulars, but he was attentive and got everything right. A very enjoyable meal and evening. We recommend Las Palomas highly."

  • "They have great authentic Mexican food, and there is so much to choose from. If you want really good Mexican food, then this is the place to go. This is not a fancy restaurant, just nice decor and a very relaxed atmosphere. They have an extensive menu, so there is something for everyone in your group. My favorite part of the menu is the section where you can choose either salmon, shrimp or tilapia, and then you are given a choice of about 12 different ways they can make it for you. I choose a different sauce each time and each one has been delicious! My family loves this restaurant, it is our family favorite."

  • "We went to Las Palomas for my birthday dinner. We made reservations on Open Table, and had no wait at all when we got there. We were seated next to the band, which was a nice surprise. They even played "Happy Birthday" for me. The food was excellent, as usual. The margaritas were delicious; and my wife enjoyed the "skinny" house margarita. The service was perfect! We will definitely come back."

  • "This is just a great local place -- high quality food, excellent margaritas and nice people. They do a nice job of adding lighter seafood and salad dishes to a more traditional Mexican menu. Our server was very polite when we returned the first basket of chips (which was stale) and brought us fresh hot ones quickly."

  • "Overall it was ok. Not what was expected from the previous reviews that had been read. Tables are very small for groups but for small numbers, two people, it would be great. Service was ok, waiter was nice but had to wait or call for service. Atmosphere was noisy, not quiet or even moderately quiet for a peaceful dinner. I would only recommend this restaurant for an early dinner or perhaps brunch."

  • "I've been coming to Las Palomas virtually since it opened. I just love the Las Palomas combination plate: A fabulous assortment of flavors all on one dish. It's very good every time, has great variety, and I don't even need to look at the menu. The kitchen was a little slower than usual on this occasion, but a 3-piece band kept us entertained, and a margarita and chilps and salsas held us until our meals arrived."

  • "I love that I can always go here and get a top shelf Margarita and good food! Service is great too!"

  • "1) the online reservation we made was not received at the restaurant 2) they sat us in a back room that had 12 other kids, some of whom we're singing... We couldn't hear each other talk. 3) we brought a coupon, and the waiter stood at the table reading the fine print, which I found awkward and uncomfortable. 4) server forgot to apply that coupon to our ticket, although he was apologetic and fixed it 5) the food that the waiter bagged for us to take home was much less than was left on the plate. 6) as we were leaving, the two hostesses had much more to talk about with each other than to thank us for our business or even acknowledge we were leaving."

  • "We eat out a lot and Las Palomas is a regular in our rotation. Great Mexican food and the best mole we've found anywhere. They are closed Sunday and Monday."

  • "This place has been around for a very long time and consistently delivers very good interior Mexican food, distinct from Tex-Mex, in a pleasant environment for a reasonable price. Order the Las Palomas combination for a chance to sample a variety of culinary delights and spare yourself the trouble of making an otherwise difficult choice."

  • "Food is good. Service was strange: our waitress put our check on the table without asking if we wanted dessert. The table next to us (4 people, 2-course meal) got the wrong check. They thought it was ours because it was for two people, but it wasn't. Out tble wasn't dried off very well. Our table was very wet. Water kept dripping in my husband's lap. It's water that comes off the frozen margarita glasses, I think. Since they serve that a lot, they should know this problem. Food was good, like I said, nothing special. I don't think it's a fine dining/romantic dinner kind if place. Just go there if you're in a hurry (service was quick) and just need a quick bite to eat and are not expecting reaching any culinary heights."

  • "On previous visits, our servers were cheerful, friendly, and attentive. On this last occassion, our servier was sullen and inattentive. His attitude was like he had just lost a loved one."

  • "We celebrated my birthday with my favorite margarita and a couple of chef selections from the menu. Everything was perfect. If you haven't tried it, the Chicken with Pecan Sauce is delectable. And you can't beat the garlic shrimp plate. What a beautiful dining room!"

  • "Las Palomas sells super fresh Mexican food and great drinks, and they have a wonderful outdoor patio that is shaded. My friend loved her ceviche and thought it was the best she had ever had. I had a fajita salad and the chicken was spicy and delicious and the salad was cheesy. Their house margaritas are a tad limey (sour more than sweet) and refreshing in the Texas heat. I'd definitely eat here again the next time I'm in Austin."

  • "We had the Mother's Day luncheon and it was terrific. The paella was great. We took about 20% of it home and had it for lunch the next day. Every bit of it delicious. The flan is the best in Austin. We are trying to get Mariecarmen to make paella a regular item for Saturday evenings. Service started ab it slow, but then turned into the usual great service. A fine experience; as was Valentine's Day; and as it always is."

  • "The food, service and entertainment was good. We sat directly in front of the 3 person band and were able to carry a conversation without any problem. We celebrated a birthday and the band was kind enough to play a birthday tune. My only complaint is; because we brought our own birthday dessert in, we were charged an extra $1.25 per person. Based on what we spent at this restaurant, I felt this was unnecessary and very petty."

  • "Our group was visiting Austin from out of town. We were looking for classic Mexican fare and Las Palomas did not disappoint. We were all very pleased with the quality of the food, the attention and enthusiasm from the wait staff and the comfortable dining environment. So many of the newer generation Mexican eateries are a full frontal assault on the senses. By contrast, Las Palomas presented a wide variety of delicious, classic Mexican ( not Tex-Mex ) dishes that satisfied without overwhelming. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel at home. We all commented that it was "just what we wanted" and we "wouldn't have changed a thing". This family owned restaurant has been getting it just right for over 30+ years."
