Las Palmas RestaurantBetter than everWe have been going to Las Palmas for about 10 years, ever since we moved into Wicker Park. I have to say, based on our Friday night visit, that the food is better than ever. It was always very good, but now it seems the very good has been transformed into the excellent. The chile relleno appetizer was among the very best I've ever had, if not the best. It would be great to see them served in an entree portion. The pork was delicious, the artichoke appetizer was great and the desert tacos -- fabulous. Started with house margaritas - nothing to write home about, but solid (and strong enough) margaritas.
Then onto the fresh guacamole - outstanding! They make it to your spicy preference and were spot on for us.
Finally on to the main course...I had the slow roasted pork (cochinita pibil) which was unbelievable. The pork just fell apart and was drowned in a delicious brown sauce. My fiancée had the chicken mole which was also really good. The sauce was smooth and a good balance of sweet and tangy. Often I think mole sauces are too sweet, but wasn't the case here.

However, I've been to Las Palmas now twice because this place really is outstanding. The unique items on the menu, the flavors, the quality - all come together well and make for a really enjoyable and delicious eating experience. Good value for your money. The food was delicious. The mojitos on the menu were beyond fantastic (especially the watermelon mojito). The restaurant has a cute and sunny patio which is great for out door dining. I highly recommend the ceviche and the strip steak. This is not your standard burritos/ tacos/ enchiladas place. I had skirt steak with Papas Fritas and Plantains, my husband had an amazing veggie "risotto" type dish served in an acorn squash, and one of our friends had duck breast in Blackberry sauce. All were extremely delicious. Great selection of wines, by glass or bottle, and fun drinks too. They are good/satisfying. The waiter this time was a little over energetic. He talked too much at first but then seemed to relax. It was a busy Saturday night. In my reservation, I asked for the outside patio. It was too cold and my girlfriends wanted to stay inside. They gave us a fantastic table inside by the window. The salmon entree and fish tacos were excellent. Nice dining space with a gas fireplace at the entryway.
