Diner Reviews
  • "The last time we eat at Las Canarias was about 3 years ago when the food, and service were fantastic, so we had high expectations when we visited the restaurant this week to entertain some business colleagues. Unfortunately the experience was a total let down! The service was slow, and sloppy and the food very average. The only saving grace was the live guitar player and the general ambience, which is still very pleasant. We won't be rushing back!!"

  • "We were only in San Antonio for one night on vacation and decided to stay at the Omni. My husband and I made a reservation at Las Cararias. It's definitely one of the nicer places along the river walk. We weren't prepared to dress up for dinner- it was mostly suits who were eating there but they welcomed us as if we were dressed perfectly and even sat us in a great spot by the windows. The service was absolutely outstanding!! We were given a great wine recommendation and even given a deal on the cost of the wine to fit into our price range. My husband had the flounder which was delicious and I had the smoked mushroom pasta which was fantastic. You really get what you pay for and a quality night out. We will definitely be back!!"

  • "We came for lunch at 1:30; however, our guests were delayed due to traffic and therefore couldn't eat lunch because the kitchen closes at 2:00. We did have the mushroom and brie brochette while we waited which was really delicious. We have been here before for lunch which we enjoyed and was reason we returned. Would wish the kitchen didn't close."

  • "First time here; Delightful experience...Food was bountiful and delicious. Service was excellent. Guitar player added to wonderful ambience. We will happily recommend to all our friends."

  • "We were very pleased with Las Canarias. First the location is central on the River Walk. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The décor elegant and very charming. We found their menu excellent and the food was delicious. The pricing is high so be prepared to spend some money."

  • "I set up two meetings with business clients for lunch at 11:30. We arrived on time with 3 more than the expected 6 attendees, and the service was great, but nothing had been cleared from the breakfast buffet, and breaking down this surrounded my party with unwelcome commotion. I returned to Las Carnarias the next day before a similar lunch with a party of 4. No one ordered a main course because the choices were not appealing! Everyone ordered two appetizers, none of which proved terribly inspiring. I suggest Las Carnitas for an outrageously expensive $25 pp breakfast OUTSIDE. The View and the terrific Service are worth it. Also Sunday Brunch is great if you happen to be in the River Walk area this day."

  • "Overall we were satisfied. The butternut squash soup was awesome. Portion sizes small for the price. Waiter/kitchen staff forgot to bring side item to the table and when we finely did we were done with the main course. Then we ordered dessert and the waiter did not bring us the coffee we had asked for. Mixed drinks at the bar beyond over priced! We frequently go out to fine dining establishments in San Antonio.....not to sure if we will rush back here anytime soon."

  • "After reading such great reviews, I was surprised to not only not be disappointed, but to have Las Canarias exceed my expectations! We recently had dinner here before a Majestic performance and everything was divine. Our server was attentive, pleasant, and didn't hover. The food was superb. We both had items from the Tasting Menu, and the Salmon with buerre rouge and mushrooms was one of the best cooked pieces of salmon I've ever had. The Dungeness Crab and Split Pea soup with crème freche was incredible, and the Granny Smith Apple Pie with ice cream was heavenly. It was a quiet Wednesday night because it was early, but everything was still fantastic, which is not always the case when you get a quiet kitchen. They also paced the meal nicely"

  • "But it was served by a gentleman with stains all over his vest. We asked for Pelligrino with lemon. The lemon came after asking for it 4x. Two of us did the tasting menu with wine. The first course wine came 30 minutes before the first course. The Wine is not decanted in its bottle. A card with the wine listed would be helpful. The choice of wine for the salmon did not seem right. They forgot to give us the dessert wine. The middle of the apple crumb cake was still fully frozen. The manager took some money off the bill, not a lot. He asked if I told the waiter to bring the wine. I should not have to. I expected more, both from the experience and once there was a misstep to have someone show more concern."

  • "Took my partner here for his birthday. The starters were excellent and arrived within a reasonable time About 15 minutes. When the entrees arrived, after about 75 minutes, the food was lukewarm. We complained but no one seemed to know what to do. We sent the food back and asked for our bill. We were charged only For the bottle of wine. We left Hungary to return to our hotel for a bar meal. A live guitarist was playing, a perfect tempo, most enjoyable."

  • "We stayed at the Hotel Omni of the restaurant and thought it would be nice to have dinner here. Well, it was most delicious. We both shared the chateau briand as our main dish and for appetizers we had a bowl of crab and pea soup and a half stuffed fried quail with a delicious deep cherry sauce. Dessert of homemade sorbet was simple after a big dinner. There was an extensive wine list with many choices. Service was top notch in every manner from the front and main waiter to the bread and water boy. We dined outside along the river under a soft light. Very romantic. Everything was so top notch that we decided to have other meals there during the days. This is an exceptional restaurant. A must!"

  • "Enjoyed the Taste of Washington with wine pairings. Overall, the quality of food was very good. Service was slow and inattentive. The soup starter still cold when it was ladled into a very hot bowl - net result, warm (not hot) soup. I have dined here once before during the summer - much more on top of things then. Perhaps San Antonio restaurants drop a notch during the off-season?"

  • "On a recent visit had all 3 meals at Canarias (different days). The brunch was outstanding, lunch and dinner were elegant with attentive servers. Food is creative, tasty and interesting from a fish sandwich to a fish dinner. The atmosphere is sophisticated, staff are friendly and helpful and the food is equal to any other restaurant in the city. It is pricy but we found the experience worth the cost."

  • "I've done this brunch before, about 6 months ago. At that time, the restaurant was closed to hotel guest on Sunday, unless you had brunch reservations. On the day we were there this time, hotel guests were allowed to eat breakfast until 10 and then they turned it into brunch at that time. So, while I am sitting there in my Sunday church best, there are people walking around in shorts and tank tops-didn't care for that. Sort of cheapened the experience. Last time it felt like a brunch worth the price. Food wise: it was great. Different choices this time. On the desert table, I would have liked more variety-lots of vanilla. Previously, there was a salted caramel pudding that was to die for (and I don't even like caramel)."

  • "Las Canarias has always been a favorite for brunch. In past visits over the years the food selections have been more extensive, but our visit was certainly enjoyable. We love the acoustic guitar music. It so completes the La Mansion setting."

  • "This was listed as one of the top 10 burnches in San Antonio so I booked a table for four. We arrived, on Saturday, for our reservation and brunch is only served on Sunday. I think had I had in mind that we are going for lunch instead of brunch I might have been more generous in my rating; however, because they were just shutting down breakfast (which they didn't offer and the food was still out), the service was disjointed and not terribly attentive. The ambience is great and the courtyard and hotel are beautiful. I'll try it again in the future and see if they can redeem themselves."

  • "My husband and I were staying at a hotel on the Riverwalk and decided to dine at Las Canarias. It was a fairly quiet and warm evening, so we ate outside and it was perfect! We decided to try the Tasting Menu with the wine pairings. Everything was fabulous!"

  • "This is a great restaurant right on the Riverwalk. High enough so strollers are not looking at your food. Ambiance was wonderful. As hotel food goes, it was just fine. If staying at the hotel, very convenient."

  • "This was hands down the best meal I had during our weeklong stay in San Antonio. We ate at several places on the riverwalk and this was easily the best. The food was amazing ( try the shortribs), the service was great and it was a beautiful night so we say outside. I like that it's not on street level so although you're on the riverwalk people aren't constantly walking right by you. We had a horrible lunch across the water at Rita's that same day and this place more than made up for it!"

  • "We ate 2 breakfasts, 1 brunch and 1 dinner over Valentines weekend. The service was excellent on every occasion and the ambiance inside is quiet and romantic. Dinner outside by the river walk was scenic and great for people watching but like having an extremely busy sidewalk running through the dining room. It was fun but not as intimate and romantic as we wanted for Valentines day dinner. The ala carte breakfast was diverse and food was delicious. The brunch served an excellent array of lunch and breakfast dishes. Do not miss the freshly prepared Bananas Foster! The Valentine dinner was from a set menu so the choices were a bit limited. The food was good but not great. That may be due to the very high volume for that weekend."

  • "We had Chateaubriand for two for $98. Meals was exquisite and so was the ambiance. We were having trouble getting a reservation for Feb, 15 at 6pm since we had tickets to see Kristin Chenoweth at 8. The only difficult thing was traffic around the Omni la Mansion. Great Time!"

  • "Although there is a limited menu, I have always enjoyed the food, atmosphere and service. On a recent visit I had the Braised Lamb Shank Ragout and a portion of the Brussel Sprouts and House Smoked Bacon Hash. Both were delightfully savory. My meal was finished with great coffee and a yummy toffee pudding."

  • "The service was outstanding but the food not very good . I ordered the bisque as starter and it was WAY too sweet (tasting like a dessert to me) , ordered the crusted pork belly as an entrée and it wasn't good either. The pork was nicely cooked and very smooth but I didn't get any crispiness from the crust while the side dish was COMPLETELY under-salted . As far as the food this restaurant is a no for me . On another note , I have been living in this city for 6 years and haven't been found a remotely decent restaurant :("

  • "Even though it was Valentine's Day, it was not a packed house like almost every other restaurant. It gave it a very romantic feel, especially with the guitarist strumming ever so lightly as to provide a magical atmosphere."

  • "Bring your loved ones or business partners. This place is a class act. One of San Antonio's best. One of the Omni's best."

  • "My wife and I decided to go to Las Canarias for a pre-Valentine's Day dinner. We were quickly seated and attended to at a small table overlooking the Riverwalk. We both opted for the tasting menu with wine. She chose a salad first course with salmon second course, while opted for quail followed by vegetarian gnocchi. All was very good. Her request for gluten-free bread was quickly accommodated. A guitarist playing in Spanish and classical styles provided a pleasing atmosphere. All in all, a very enjoyable evening."

  • "Dining on Valentines Day just above the San Antonio Riverwalk is as good as it gets for romance and fun. Not a good night to size up the regular cuisine but the service was excellent."

  • "Wife & I had dinner before going to the Majestic and also to celebrate our anniversary. The service was unobtrusive and very friendly. Wife's lamb shank was an outstanding dish, well seasoned and different. My pork belly was very lean and VERY small, a disappointment. It wasn't nearly as good as Il Sogno. Appetizers: smoked quail was great but small and beet salad was excellent and larger than expected. We enjoyed the signature sticky pudding dessert also. Overall a nice experience but portions on some items are too small for the price. Complimentary valet parking is a plus."

  • "I made a reservation for my husband 60 birthday and asked for a super romantic setting and they delivered ( what can be better than Riverwalk view?). Not only we were welcomed warmly, but staff knew our name and was more than accommodating. We ordered tasting menu with wine pairing and everything was exceptional . We loved everything and are very grateful for memorable evening ."
