Diner Reviews
  • "Although the food was ok, I expected something more, considering the size of the bill I paid. The French onion soup was bland, and the trout was not particularly tasty. The service was friendly and professional, but we ended up with cold cappuccino, a fitting end to the meal."

  • "The food was overall good enough. My yellowtail chunk was red in the middle (not fully cooked) so I had to send it back. The replacement was perfectly cooked, but the waitress chastised me mildly, saying that "there normally is a red vein in that cut" with the implication that they were humoring me. Excuse me, but I've been cooking fish for over 50 years and I know raw fish. I did not appreciate the barb. We ordered the brussels sprouts appetizer due to rave reviews, but ours was long on bacon chunks and maple syrup and short on brussels sprouts. As I must stick to a low sugar diet, the dish was a big disappointment. The arugula salad dressing (a blueberry vinaigrette) also suffered from sugar overload so I ate little although it was tasty."

  • "Our first visit-great service!!! The food was wee-prepared!!!"

  • "Lark's has delicious, locally-sourced food, a lovely dining room and the best, friendliest service in Ashland."

  • "Service was outstanding as we're the appitiser, salad and beverages. Waiter even took a special drink recipe request. Unfortunately the main course did it meet the same high standards. The duck was dry, which is particularly notable since it was dark meat instead of breast. The waiter attempted to make up for the chef by bringing 2 sauces but to little avail. The sole was also so overbooked that portions could not be cut with a fork and required a knife. I have heard good things about this resturant so perhaps it was an off night or perhaps being the 4th of July the chef was a stand in. It was fairly early and not yet busy so it was not due to an overly busy kitchen. We might go back and try again but will not refer a friend."

  • "An all around great restaurant. We were seated on time for an early pre-show dinner. Excellent service in very pleasant surroundings. The food was well prepared and tasty. We ordered the two specials of the day -- both fish dishes. Both preparations were executed and served attractively. Definitely a good experience."

  • "This is a great restaurant to go to before a play at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival."

  • "Service was superb; the server informed, engaged, friendly, alert but never intrusive, with a light & responsive touch to all potential needs. A++. Fried chicken breast, a traditional favorite was moist inside crispy outside & not overly salty; to the other end of the spectrum, duck was beautifully presented & reportedly juicy, tender & moist - kudos on a culinary challenge. polenta & confit were a bit unusual & overshadowed by the delectable brussels sprouts! salads are all exceptional here. Wild Trout with cauliflower puree was very enjoyable and would be ordered again. Don't get me started on the desserts - all over the top delicious. Coffee was just OK but for us the bar is set high. We don't drink alcohol but noted the bar was busy!"

  • "We have always enjoyed Larks, but for this visit we were seated in an add-on area off the entrance to the dining room. When we asked to be seated in the main dining room, we were told we had to make the main dining room a "special request" on the Open Table reservation form. We were very disappointed; the area we were in was cold, noisy with kitchen noise and people entering the dining room, as well as cold drafts from the outside door opening and closing. I doubt that we'll ever dine there again; there are more accommodating fine restaurants in Ashland."

  • "Lovely hotel with a great bar but the food quality at the restaurant has continued to drop off sharply over the last several years. The last time I ate here the filet of sole was inedible and had to be sent back. The waiter (and host) were very solicitious and the fish was redone without complaint and I was offered a free desert so points on the outfront staff but the food is very uneven."

  • "This is a superb restaurant. Food was only surpassed by the fantastic service."

  • "We visit Ashland every year, and and one of our regular stops is Larks. Over the years the consistency of the service, food, and wine offerings has been constant. This year two in our party had the amazing pork chop. This is a huge meal, but they were up for it. I had the trout, which was cooked to perfection. We will keep coming back!"

  • "Larks in Ashland is truly an upscale dining experience with great food, wonderful staff, and a great wine list. We always bring our out-of-town guests here and they are always impressed."

  • "Delicious fresh gourmet food. Pretty room with full bar connected to the Ashland Springs Hotel. The trout was THE BEST I have ever had. Crispy skin moist fish infused with Juniper berries and pine Served on puréed cauliflower topped with pea shoots and hazelnuts. OMG so yummy! The fresh beet salad with goat cheese was great too. The sole was served with Huckleberry thyme beurre Blanc, carmelized potatoes and carrots. The cheese fondue with crab was impressively presented but just OKAY. Id pass on that next time. They had a decent wine list and nice dessert collection. We had the above plus one glass of wine. Bill was $130. The table next to us ordered 3" thick double cut pork chops with a mustard apple glaze. They said it was "excellent""

  • "Enjoyed a wonderful meal. Food - the 5 cheese & crab fondue was bowl licking fantastic-(there was enough bread). The mussels were good, the cream sauce was spicy- just needed some more and the mussel broth needed some seasoning but there was plenty. The desserts, the creme brulee and Mocha Cheese cake were excellent. The dinning room was beautiful with large wall mirrors so you could see all around. We will definitely be back when we come back for another Shakespeare Play. We enjoyed chatting with the couples on both sides of our table. They had been here many times and said everything was great, and so it was"

  • "I've been here a dozen times ad the food is always creative and scrumptious. I have a three year old (who is well behaved but she is still three) and she was respectfully treated by the staff. M"

  • "The Lark strikes a comfortable medium between a traditional dinner house and casual dining. The food is consistently excellent, the service is friendly and attentive, and the patrons are alive, attractive, and intelligent. (This is Ashland!) This is not a particular young crowd, or loud crowd, sort of place, but if you are used to very good food and excellent service in San Francisco or Portland restaurants, this is the place for you in Ashland. You can sit back and relax and from most tables observe the passing human parade on the street. And: it is not extraordinarily expensive."

  • "Service was excellent. Our appetizers were good--tempura asparagus and roasted oysters. Both servings were generous. Menu is varied. Unfortunately our fish was only ok. The halibut was overcooked and the rockfish covered by a thick sauce that hid the taste and texture of the fish. Perhaps another entrée would be better."

  • "When it's time to celebrate an achievement, in preparation for a significant challenge, or just to feel spoiled by attentive service and fine food and cocktails Larks is our go to place. We rarely dine out because I am such a fabulous cook. Larks is our number one pick in Ashland."

  • "There was a slight mixup with our meals but our server remedied the error with a comp for our drinks. "

  • "Lark's ambience is casual elegance with an old world/nouveau feel. I love going there. The food is always presented nicely...good taste and creative in use of ingredients. They also try to use local ingredients when possible. The servers are young, attractive and bright. They seem well trained and do a good job. One has to wait a bit longer than other places, but is worth the wait, plus it gives you a chance to enjoy the company you are with. I think that the extra time wait is in the kitchen because they take care and pride in what they are serving."

  • "Beautifully presented wonderful tasting cuisine for a special celebration dinner. If you want a leisurely quiet dinner come after the theatre goers have dined. We would definitely return. "

  • "Since eating at Larks some time back, we make it part of our annual Ashland experience - the one night we dress somewhat more elegantly for dinner. We had a family member from England joining us on this occasion. The food was very good with one relatively unique item - a rhubarb ketchup - with my meatloaf. My wife and her sister were curious so the waiter, without more than our joking prompt brought each of them a small cup of it to try with their meal. The service was as good as it gets. Thoughtful and attentive without being too "present". A sense of humor as well. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It is a lovely place to dine."

  • "I eat at Larks about once a week, for the first time the service stood out as being way below the normal standards. Our server was Greg, not only did he not describe the specials but just dropped a printed list on the table and left. We saw him again to give our orders but then were held prisoner while waiting for the check. Other servers came and cleared the table and I should have asked one of the "regular" servers for my check. Perhaps Greg will remember me for the small tip. I normally tip 20% or more but in this case I left about 10% and regret even bothering with that small amount."

  • "My fiance and I share the same birthday, and as a special treat we decided to go to Larks for our birthday dinner on our trip to Southern Oregon. We had the Dungeness Crab and Five Cheese Fondue - so delicious (and I don't even like crab), Double Cut Pork Chop - best pork chop I've ever had, and my fiance had the Ribeye Steak, but with the Duck Confit sides rather than those offered with the steak. He loved it, and he ordered the Apple Crisp for dessert. I can honestly say when we go to Ashland again we will dine at Larks. Delicious food, and it's great for a splurge if you want to treat yourself or someone else. They have a corking fee, so bring a special bottle with you as their wine markup is on the high end. Wonderful place!"

  • "This restaurant is on Main Street within the Ashland Springs Hotel, an iconic landmark in the town. It is literrally steps from the OSF. We found the atmosphere very inviting and the service was terrific. Our server, Korey, was outstanding. The food was good, but not special. The sweet potato bisque was more of a broth. The meatloaf was nicely done and filling. The Petrale sole was very good. The wine list was heavily weighted toward Oregon wines. Overall, a very convenient place to dine adjacent to the theatre that serves a good meal."

  • "We had an enjoyable meal, fresh food, and fine service. The restaurant has stepped up in both quality and service. Brussels sprout starter was fantastic. Lake trout was perfectly prepared and the pasta (spaghetti, but thick almost bigoli style) was tasty! "

  • " Always a great staff and I really appreciate the willingness to substitute items. Wish having two checks at a table for four were no problem. "

  • "We go to Lark's whenever we are in Ashland. The food is always good, and the menu varied and well-prepared. My risotto with crab had crab in every bite, and there was enough to bring home in the cooler. My husband loved his Southern-fried chicken, too. The bar was packed, and the restaurant almost full. Our waiter was very pleasant, as were the other staff who brought food and removed it from the table."

  • "We went for Mother's Day and had the special brunch menu for the day. It was delicious. The quiche with the hollandaise sauce was so good and light. I loved it! Everything was good except the pear tart. I didn't particularly care for it. It wasn't a typical pear tart and I thought it was just okay. The service and ambiance were great. "

  • "Having dined here many times in the past, I was anxious to take a friend who had never been there. She ordered a caesar salad....it was pale green...looked more like the color of iceberg and was tasteless except for the pepper. She did not eat it. She ordered crab risotto and said it was not very good. I tasted it...bland and the presentation was poor at best. My entree was great, our appetizer was great.....the service was spectacular, but I doubt she will ever eat there again. I will be back.....but it was disappointing this time. "

  • "Larks is in a great location for a meal before or after a show at Oregon Shakespeare Festival or Oregon Cabaret theaters. They try to use in season, fresh ingredients and I have always had good service. Because of the desire to use local fresh ingredients the menu selection is moderate, not large but I can always find something I want. The waitstaff has always been friendly and helpful. "

  • "Expected a little more casual, but this refined restaurant's limited menu seems high quality. Meat loaf was better than expected but should come with mashed potatoes rather than new potatoes for legitimate "comfort" feel. Fried chicken was very good & moist."

  • "Whenever we head to Ashland, we enjoy entertaining friends at Larks. The food is outstanding, the service is wonderful and the location is prime. This lunch did not disappoint. We sat as long as we could because we were headed to a show, but it was a leisurely lunch with excellent food. We will return."

  • "Our visit to Lark's renewed my appreciation for the fine eatery it had been in the past. The friendly service, never in question, allows the visitor to feel comfortable from the start of the visit. However, depending on where one sits, service may be a little slow. This was our 6th visit. There are waitstaff I recognize and have enjoyed their service; they are experienced and on top of their jobs. However, there aren't always enough of them to keep up on a busy evening. It may account for a rushed feeling. I think the appetizers and salads show inventive ideas and a fine selection of local products. Several wines offered are from local vineyards; anyone wanting to experience fine dining in an artistic atmosphere should try Lark's. "
