Diner Reviews
  • "The food and wine were great, but the room was really really hot. Also, though the food came out quickly, it was hard to get a waiter's attention and took a long while to get the check, so I can only give the service 3 stars."

  • "We eat here regularly. It is a reliably great date place! The service is pleasant and perfect, without being pretentious. The food is always delicious. It's not ultra-cheap but is easily affordable. The atmosphere is quiet enough and lighting is nice. In short, an easy, romantic, delicious place for a casual date."

  • "Charming, small French boutique restaurant with impeccable service and exquisite food. The ambience is cozy and unpretentious, with friendly waiters and a small menu where every dish is extremely flavorful. Of course deserts are to die for and the wine is not to be missed. Expect to pay at least $50 per person, but it is worth it to treat yourself to this heavenly restaurant at least every once in awhile."

  • "Wonderful dinner! We had a simple steak frites salad and it was so delicious and perfectly cooked and the aiole they served with the French fries was divine. It was better than bistro meals we ate in Paris and friendlier too!"

  • "Every year we come here on our anniversary. We were in Paris on our honeymoon and L'Ardoise totally recalls the wonderful ambience of the restaurants we most enjoyed then and on subsequent visits. But after our first visit to L'Ardoise, we decided we could celebrate more than once a year! That is to say, dinner here makes the celebration. I hesitate to say more because this is a wonderful gem and I want to make sure I can get a table ;-)"

  • "We spent the entire day in the city and wanted a nice quiet dinner away from Union Square where we were staying. The food was amazing! Service was just as great! Our wine glasses were always full and we we enjoyed every bite. We will definitely be back to try out the other items on the menu."

  • "my husband and i drive by l'ardoise frequently. we often say, let's try it. and i am so glad we did. the service is attentive without being obnoxious. the food is spectacular. transports me back to the neighbourhood bistros of paris. the only fault? i wish it were closer to my house."

  • "This is our friend's favorite restaurant and we are so glad he introduced us to it. Delicious and quiet- a rare combination today. Shrimp raviole not to missed. We had halibut, steak, and duck; all perfect. Ambience of a true French bistro. Great service. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "The service was absolutely 5-stars top-notch; every employee provided A+ service. The food was good, you won't be disappointed or unsatisfied, but it also wasn't anything spectacular or memorable. In summary, if you're looking for a romantic wine-n-dine experience in a dim lit environment then this is a top choice. However, if you're more on the foodie side and put more weight on amazing or memorable food experience then I would not recommend this place."

  • "L'Ardoise was one of the best dinner experiences in years. We told the waitress that we were doing a mez-a-mez and all plates divided perfectly and a very generous house salad. Entire meal was a 5 star experience and I practiced my French."

  • "This restaurant is a favorite of mine. We loved all of our dishes and the service was excellent. Had just returned from paris so I can make the statement that it is like a paris bistro. It was saturday and they rushed us a bit but that is normal anywhere in SF. Still my favorite"

  • "Everything about the meal for 4 people was perfect. The mix of people in the restaurant added to the ambiance of this intimate space. Of course we came for the food and were completely satisfied with the quality and quantity: both were just right. "

  • "Per usual a great meal here. The food never disappoints. The only issue was feeling a bit rushed. The starters can out immediately, quickly followed by mains. Not even enough time for a second glass of wine. We were in and out in 35 minutes."

  • "Once a year, we make our way to L'Ardoise to experience the ambiance & delight of bistro dining. I chose the tiger prawn ravioli, whose texture was perfectly al dente, my wife chose the asparagus soup which had a wonderful concentrated flavor in a light cream base. For entrees, we chose the hangar steak, medium rare, with pomme frittes (always a winner) and the lamb shank -- perfectly braised, perfectly cooked, soaking up the goodness of a hearty red wine sauce. The service was attentive- it's always consistent from their team, whom are courteous and friendly, and whom keep a close watch on your table. Glasses were never empty, and we never felt any rush despite the fact that the restaurant filled up quickly on a Friday early evening."

  • "We were taking a friend for first time. She enjoyed the ambiance, restaurant, food and service. I had the pork loin and it was delicious and well prepared. She had the chicken and really enjoyed. L'Ardoise has become one of my favourite places to dine. The staff is always warm and most efficient. "

  • "We had 2 dear friends from London visiting and i was looking for a quiet intimate place with great food and a quiet relaxed atmosphere to catch up. This place ticked both boxes. The food was really delicious and typically French. The place is really cozy and the service was impeccable. Definitely a place to recommend. "

  • "My brother and I just took my mother here for a belated Mother's Day dinner. I live right around the corner and have been to L'Ardoise a few times- it is indeed excellent, with friendly, fun service and scrumptious food. The cozy ambiance is perfect for an intimate family dinner. We are not all together at the same time very often, and this was perfect for that special occasion. I highly recommend it!"

  • "We love coming to L'Ardoise. The waiters greet us warmly like old friends and have since our second visit. The interior is cozy and very Parisian without being uncomfortably formal. We look forward to our favorite dishes: escargot, pommes landaises and tarte tintin, and this past time the special sea bass was lovely. We go for special events like our anniversary, but also just on a normal Friday night. The beautiful corner spot and the affordable half-bottles of very good wine always makes us feel like we are on a mini vacation. The space is tiny but the service (and apparently the kitchen) is so organized and responsive you feel taken care of but never rushed."

  • "From the moment I arrived at L'Ardoise, I was treated as though I was the most important guest in the restaurant, but of course, all guests were given the same exceptional welcome, and superb service throughout their dining experience. I have dined at a multitude of highly rated restaurants in San Francisco, but L'Ardoise is unsurpassed in its service, the quality of food (and wine) served, its ambiance and overall "welcoming" atmosphere. To start, I ordered the Charcuterie, and when informed that certain pates contained mushrooms (I'm allergic), the plate was immediately removed and replaced with a different Charcuterie plate. I followed with the Rack of Lamb - TOTAL PERFECTION. In every category, L'Ardoise is absolutely superb. "

  • "The service is great at L'ardoise. The waiters are busy but are always friendly, attentive and helpful. The food is excellent. The salad was huge, I hate tiny expensive salads! Loved the anchovies. I had the salmon, verging on dry but it wasn't. Tasty lobster reduction sauce. Veggies too. My boyfriend had the coq au vin and said it was the best chicken he's every had! Nice wines too at reasonable prices. Birthday candle, nice touch. We'll be back."

  • "We had a terrific time. The food was very good. I had the halibut with risotto and my husband had the duck. Both were excellent. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. "

  • "A few items were different than the counterparts actually cooked in France, but overall it was a great experience. The good was really good (get the tiger prawn ravioli, skip the escargot). The service was just the right balance of attentive and "leave you alone to enjoy your meal". In that way, a lot like brasseries. Be sure to bring your email confirmation. When we arrived, we apparently were not in their system. However, when I showed my email, all was fine. Over all, go, get some food and wine and enjoy!"

  • "L'Ardoise never fails to please. From the friendly greeting to the final complimentary glass of wine, the evening was (and always is) delightful. Service is attentive, friendly but not overbearing. The food is reliably wonderful, with always at least one new thing on the menu. I love this restaurant."

  • "First, make reservations well in advance. We went on a Saturday night and the only reservation I could get 8 days out was 5 pm. That was fine and actually worked out well. The tables are very close together and we didn't have anyone next to us for the first hour. When that party arrived it became very noisy. Food was excellent, service top notch. I would definitely return."

  • "Small cozy French bistro with delicious food and romantic ambiance. Duck confit and the flat iron steak were perfection. Loved the vanilla Creme brûlée as well! Attentive service, enjoyed the jazz music playing in the background, candles on the table. Please note this restaurant is very small. Reservations a must. Good value for the moderate price."

  • "Great authentic food with a completely French waitstaff... The escargot was classic tasty and buttery. The scallops were perfectly cooked and they were able to master every bite of the coq au vin. Topped off with an amazing tarte tartin. Definitely worthwhile trying - and somewhere that you'll absolutely want to go back to."

  • "We travel to San Francisco every year and we always look forward to the food the city has to offer. I booked this based on the wonderful reviews and it did not disappoint. Everything was wonderful - the service, food (had the most amazing prawn ravioli appetizer) and the wine - even the after dinner coffee! We were a little let down by the creme brulee but honestly, we really didn't need the dessert after that amazing meal. We will definately be back next time we are in San Fran. "
