Diner Reviews
  • "L'Ardoise has been in the hood for a good many years now and the food still is very very good. I'd recommend."

  • "Recommended to this place and it DID NOT disappoint! We started with the tiger prawn ravioli which was so light and unique and fantastic. She had the duck and I had the lamb. The duck was good, but the lamb chops were EASILY the best lamb I have ever tasted. Service was attentive and cordial! Fantastic place for a date night!"

  • "Small cozy French bistro with delicious food and romantic ambiance. Duck confit and the flat iron steak were perfection. Loved the vanilla Creme brûlée as well! Attentive service, enjoyed the jazz music playing in the background, candles on the table. Please note this restaurant is very small. Reservations a must. Good value for the moderate price."

  • "Great authentic food with a completely French waitstaff... The escargot was classic tasty and buttery. The scallops were perfectly cooked and they were able to master every bite of the coq au vin. Topped off with an amazing tarte tartin. Definitely worthwhile trying - and somewhere that you'll absolutely want to go back to."

  • "From the outside you would never know that a part of France is in Duboce Triangle, but inside L'Ardoise bistro it is. The food--appetizers, entree, dessert--is excellent. The service is very attentive and has a French accent. Very nice place for a special occasion or to make an evening special. I ate too much but it was worth the extra time at the gym."

  • "What a wonderful neighborhood gem. From the moment we arrived, service and food were wonderful. Very good food and atmosphere. Would easily return to this place. Reminded me of being in Paris."

  • "Wonderful service and the menu was designed to have great range of options. Lovely wine too!"

  • "The place has a true french feel to it. It's small, cozy and provides a special kind of aesthetic fulfillment."

  • "The service was (and always is) friendly, the food was fantastic, and the presentation was very professional. You must get a dessert because they are out of this world good. L'Ardoise is one of the restaurants I go to to give gift certificates to friends."

  • "We have had dinner here many times and always have a lovely time and wonderful meal. It's the perfect small French bistro - right here in SF!"

  • "One of the finest fillet steaks I've had. Fantastic service, and our waiter did a brilliant job pairing the wine for us. I've been here about three or four times and it's always been amazing. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody though because then it might get too busy... :-)"

  • "One of the best bistro meals I have had outside Paris. Really excellent."

  • "I'm always a bit disappointed when I go to L'Ardoise. I love French cusine, but this place is a bit hit and miss. On the one hand a delicious warm goat's cheese salad, on the other a charcuterie plate that didn't taste that special. On the one hand excellent duck confit, on the other luke warm monkfish with an almost unpleasant texture and not much flavor. The bread was also disappointing. Hit and miss has been my experience every time we've dined here."

  • "Very reminiscent of the sidewalk cafes and bistros of Paris. Excellent food, served in generous portions at a reasonable price. The staff was excellent; friendly & knowledgeable. The ambience was cozy and comfortable. The noise level, for a smaller bistro, was still quite acceptable. My filet was one of the best I'd ever had. My wife had the lamb chops and they too, were exceptional. The pommes (potatoes) landaises, cooked in duck fat, were phenomenal! A must for an excellent, romantic and quiet dinner for two! We most heartily recommend L'Ardoise!"

  • "I moved to the Bay area recently from New York, and have gone to a number of restaurants that my friends claim are "awesome" or "the best!" And really, none of them have been worthy of that type of praise. The food is good and the vibe is fine, but it's nothing to write home about. I was beginning to doubt that San Francisco really is the food mecca people had been making it out to be. L'Ardoise is the first restaurant we've been to that deserves being called "great." The food was delicious, the servers were just the right amount of snooty yet attentive, and the prices were reasonable, given the caliber of our meal. I highly recommend it."

  • "I took my partner here for his birthday and we had a wonderful time. We had a 9:45pm reservation, which can mean bad service and bad food because staff just want to go home. That was not the case here, the moment we walked in we were greeted with a smile, a hand shake and offered a wine list while we waited. The food was amazing! The service was just as amazing as the food, our server even put a birthday candle on his dessert and sang him Happy Birthday without having to ask her to. We cant wait to go back!"

  • "My partner and I returned after a fairly long absence from this place. Our memories of our last meal had left us wanting to return. This time around, we found the service up to the same standards as we remember - the staff all kind, friendly and courteous. However, while we found the food to be decent, most of it was overly salted and lacking some of the same lustre and complexity that we had remembered. Perhaps our palettes have changed and become more salt-sensitive. But we both left feeling a little underwhelmed."

  • "We'd been meaning to try this place for ages (ever since we lived in SF 10 years ago). They were always booked, which we thought spoke volumes about this place. But we finally got in this past weekend only to be hugely disappointed. Escargots were over buttered and tasted microwaved (uneven heat burned my tongue). The tomato soup tasted like it came out of a can. The coq au vin tasted like slop. The hangar steak and fries were decent, but how can you mess up hangar steak and fries? We ran as far away from there as fast as we could and never looked back."

  • "Everyone who works at L'Ardoise loves their job, and takes an extreme amount of pride in the customers experience. For example, when I dropped my napkin, the waitress immediately gave me another within less than 30 seconds without even having to ask. When one of our party mentioned it was my birthday, she came out with a delicious banana bread pudding with a candle in it. The hostess extremely welcoming and warm, even gave us hugs on the way out. Everyone is a former Parisian, then they truly love living and working in San Francisco. The coq au vin is the best ever, as are the tiger prawn ravioli appetizer. With food and service like this, it's hard to try and he other French restaurant."

  • "This was my wife birthday and both of us felt lucky to have come over to L'aRdoise. The atmosphere, service, food, and general vibe were just outstanding. We truly enjoyed every moment - from the entrance and greeting through the dessert. Amazing spot!"

  • "We loved L'Ardoise from the moment we stepped inside. We were treated like honored guests. The restaurant is small and quaint, with low lighting. It's located in a beautiful quiet neighborhood. We had excellent service, the food was fabulous, our server recommended the perfect wine, and we can't wait to return. The people running the show obviously know how to do it so their patrons feel welcomed and leave planning to return soon!"

  • "The perfect birthday dinner (even a candle on my chocolate fondant!). The menu is consistently excellent, but I am always interested and pleasantly pleased with the specials--artichoke heart and goat cheese salad for the appetizer (Bravo!) and swordfish on a bed of risotto and spinach with lobster sauce (Magnifique!) Merci beaucoup, Chef Clement and the entire staff (kisses on both cheeks)!!! ;)"

  • "We've been to L'Ardoise before and it quickly came to mind as the restaurant for a quiet Anniversary (24th) dinner just the two of us. To call it perfect for the occasion? well perfect is a strong term.....but it comes damn close. Food...excellent. Service....very attentive, knowledgable about the menu. The wine list is good.....and our server knew it well enough to recommend a fine, moderately priced bottle. And the ambiance?......as if we were on a corner in Paris.....stepping into another world. It is tough to get a reservation at L'Ardoise, but it is now our Go To place."

  • "Everything about this restaurant was perfect: the food; the portions; the service; and the ambiance. They even honored a special request that I typed into the OpenTable reservation form."

  • "The food was good - but, perhaps the entrees sat under a warming light too long. His filet mignon was just over medium, though ordered medium rare and the salads on each plate were warm - very warm. I asked my date if he thought they were supposed to be warm. We couldn't decide, but were leaning towards no. It was still yummy."

  • "We have been here several times and always enjoy dining there. Service has always been good as has the food. The most delicious brussell sprouts of all time. Can get very noisy when full and it usually is because it is so good."

  • "We loved our dinner here! My seafood stew was luscious! The chocolate bread pudding also delicious. This is a small, cozy restaurant much like you would find in France. We will return!"

  • "We thought the food was very good. All of the staff friendly and attentive. We didn't like being in and out in less than an hour. Every time I looked up, there was a staff member looking to see if they could clear our plates."

  • "Wonderful French cuisine, great brussells sprouts, esp. for those who don't like brussells sprouts, because L'ardoise's don't taste like the conventional sprouts. Parking, though, is challenging."

  • "L'Ardoise is a gem in our neighborhood and wish this was more than just the second time dining there. Plans are definitely to return. The food experience is an explosion of tastes. The wine selections are varied and some of our favorite on the list."

  • "We enjoyed excellent food and attentive service at L'Ardoise. However, as with several other French bistros in SF, tables are very close together--a bit too close for my comfort."

  • "When you eat at L'Ardoise it is as if you have been transported to Paris to a small tucked away bistro. The food and atmosphere is authentic and superb. The wait staff are excellent! You will want to return again and again; it is really a lovely spot."

  • "Had the confit and my wife had the rack of lamb: both DELICIOUS! We also had a bottle of Chateauneuf du pape from Juliette Avril that was just amazing! Am looking forward to going back there!"
