A word from L'Apicio
L'Apicio is located at 13 E. 1st Street (between Bowery and 2nd Avenue). The Italian-inspired restaurant gets its name from the 18th century Italian cookbook, and brings Executive Chef Gabe Thompson's cravable modern Italian food to the East Village. L'Apicio offers a deep cocktail and wine program created by Beverage Director Joe Campanale, while Executive Pastry Chef Katherine Thompson oversees the pastry program. L'Apicio is open for dinner seven days a week and brunch on the weekends, featuring lounge and bar areas and outdoor seating, in addition to the main and private dining rooms.Continued

  • "I had the Parmesan French Toast as I had read about it before coming here. It most certainly didn't disappoint!! The brunch menu had a good selection of interesting dishes, it was refreshing to have different options from your standard brunch menu. The menu also had several kinds of Bloody Mary's, mimosas, and other brunch cocktails. Our server was wonderful. Not only was he friendly and knowledgable about the menu but encouraged us to enjoy a leisurely brunch. The other staff was extremely friendly also which, sadly, can be a rare thing in Manhattan. Would def recommend L'Apicio for brunch!!"

  • "I took my boyfriend here for his birthday this past weekend. The menu looked great and we started with two cocktails, which were delicious and two starters. We had the arancini, which were really dry and definitely needed a sauce of some kind, and the panzanella which was tasty but a bit too salty. We then had the lamb bolognese which was really good and the veal osso bucco pasta, which was so unbearably garlicky. For our main we split the roasted chicken which was cooked really well but it was drowned in salt and herbs. Again the brussel sprouts were also salted too much. The main theme of the night was that everything was over salted! The waiter also forgot to surprise my boyfriend with candles in our dessert which was disappointing."

The restaurant seems to be hitting its stride after opening. However, would still give the nod to the early incarnations and earlier restaurants."

  • "I love it when I have a good meal from start to finish. From the arancini to the cheeses, to the branzino. Everything was excellent and fresh. You have to get the house made ricotta, it was fantastic! Our waitress was excellent, she was really nice, engaging, and made excellent recommendations. Lastly, it's a neighborhood gem, but not really. It's too sexy of a place to be a neighborhood gem, but I feel like I've never heard of it. I used to live 5 blocks away, and not once did I think to go there. Simple, but fresh menu, and I will be back again."

  • "I went to L'Apicio for a girls night out and it was an incredible experience. The food was fantastic, especially the pasta dishes, and the service was attentive, but not too attentive that it's annoying. It would be a great date spot because all of the plates are meant to be shared. But, the best part was that the dishes were not so small that we had to order a ton, so it was not expensive at all in terms of NYC prices. I would go back again and again."

  • "I was very impressed with the service here. The staff are all there to help your every need, not just the waiter or waitress assigned to your table. Really, all of our needs were met. The food is great, though I wasn't impressed with the short ribs (the sauce they came with was very salty) and the side veggies were ok, though nothing spectacular. However, the ravioli and cocktails were great!"

  • "L'Apicio seems to be pretty much a one stop shop. I would recommend it for a date, a catch-up with a friend, a family dinner, or a business dinner. I was there for a business dinner with a group of C level execs, and we ordered about half the menu, and everything was either very good or excellent. There was not a single disappointment. It is also worth noting that almost every person in this group was a steakhouse type, and they all got pasta instead of a meat and were extremely happy. Even though they were a little dismayed when all of the vegetables sides that I ordered for the table arrived, they were soon eating them with gusto and exclaiming how delicious they were. The service was attentive but unhurried, with personal touches."

  • "Highlights were the house made ricotta with delicious, chewy/crunchy crackers and athough we weren't fans of the orange marmalade it was served with, we loved it. We had a very good escarole salad, nicely dressed with lots of Pecorino Romano and a surprising addition of roasted pumpkin seeds. We liked our pasta, the delicious mezzaluna stuffed w cauliflower had a great, crispy addition on top (breadcrumbs?). They also brought us a few mezzaluna stuffed w butternut squash that was heavenly - w a silken, buttery sauce, compliments of the chef. Our favorite dish was the roasted chicken - perfectly moist and flavorful with a spicy black pepper and fennel crusted skin, served with roasted fennel. YUM! We will definitely be back!"

Loved the fries with salsa bianco. Service was attentive and patient and helpful with wine suggestions and very accommodating to bring food for our two under 12 diners."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to L'Apicio Monday night for my birthday and we had a great time. The space is quite large and airy for the East Village (there are great tables for groups of six or more) because it is in a new-construction complex and I liked the high ceilings, low lighting and floor to ceiling windows. I'm excited to return for brunch, I've heard great things and I imagine the space is great during the day. I highly recommend the polenta dishes, the pastas and save room for dessert. We ordered gelato and the hazelnut ice cream cake for dessert despite being stuffed, and they were delicious. Our service was great and I'm excited to return and sample more of the menu."

  • "Came here for Valentine's expecting a romantic, cozy place and found the opposite--a cavernous restaurant with very loud music. We were seated right by the kitchen--a massive, open space in the wall, no doors. It felt as if we were sitting IN the kitchen. Wine list was expensive, and one of the less expensive wines that we ordered ($52) left us both with awful headaches later that night (we had a 7pm res and could feel it by 9pm), even worse the next morning! The servers were not very attentive. The food was average--starters (Grilled Endive and Grilled Squid) were both very salty. The pastas (Garganelli Verde and Taglioni Nero)--were better but the Taglioni was an unsatisfying, minuscule portion! Easy to find better for this price."

  • "Food was quite good but service was spotty (appetizer came out after our shared mains?) and a different waitstaff helped with wine selection because server was saddled with large party that sat 10 mins before us but ended up competing with us for ordering time - cocktails, food, etc. Finally, sat in the area adjacent to the kitchen with a large curtain partitioning off a "private" dining space for 10-12 folks. That party also sat around the same time and kept bumping through the curtain!? We moved our table away but another 2-top next to us also along the curtain had the same problem an hour later. Overall not a great set up. I do love the entryway, lounge and bar area though."

  • "This place is awesome! I went 2X in 3 nights. The first was with two friends and the second was a date. L'Apicio was great for both. The bar is really cool and James runs it well. Good drinks and great vibe. The food is AMAZING. Italian with little or no red sauces...who knew! Lara was our server the first night. She is really cool and knows her stuff. The host staff is friendly and helpful. This place rocks!"

  • "We sat at a table that was set on its own because of a pillar right next to it. This was kind of nice because it was a bit quieter, but on the other hand we did not feel part of the bustling restaurant, so we did not enjoy the typical Saturday night ambiance of the place. It also made clearing the table a bit difficult for staff. The waiter always insisted that the more expensive dish or wine was the better one, and we tested him out a few times just to see if that was what he was doing (and it was). Other than that we had a glorious evening. The food was very good and so was the wine. Of everything we ordered, the grilled endive salad was a stand-out for me. Would definitely go back."

  • "A big surprise! We hadn't heard of L'Apicio , I picked it from Zagats because we were in the neighborhood. It was delicious! The citrus salad was superb, so was my branzino and my husband loved his polenta. The ambience was great, very nicely decorated, modern but manages to be warm and inviting. The service was also excellent. The price was reasonable. We will definitely go back!"

  • "Service here is great. From the welcome at the door to our very knowledgable server it was professional, attentive and nicely timed. Nice ambience, low lighting, great music. Sadly it was the usual tables squashed together so we felt we dined with our neighbors. Both courses (salad and pasta) were SO salty it ruined the flavor of everything, even the chili in the pasta was overshadowed by the saltiness."

  • "Came with old friends that I haven't seen in a while, so there was a lot of catching up to do. Wait staff understood and were attentive without hovering. The sommelier listened to our preferences and brought the perfect wine (after some trial and error). The ricotta special was delicious and all enjoyed their meals (arctic char, branzino and hanger steak with tuscan fries - which we all shared - yum). My only concern is that they don't seem to make an effort to serve wild fish instead of farmed. But for that, this would be my #1 restaurant...."

The food was top notch. The wine list was a bit large, but we found an italian bottle that was the best I've ever had. I give this place an A++++, however look out, it may hurt your wallet a bit."

  • "6 of us went to L'Apicio for my Dad's birthday. I've been to L'Artusi many times, sometimes with my wine group (loved it every time), sometimes on my own, and I've been to dell'anima once (so-so). I think that our meal at L'Apicio was up there with the best meals we've had at L'Artusi, and actually it might have been a little better. So many of the dishes were spectacular. Ones that stood out were the Bucatini with garlic, shrimp and chilies (probably one of the most satisfying pastas I've had in a long time and perfect with dry riesling), the agnolotti with sweetbreads and mascarpone, the panzanella, the squid (perfect texture!) and the chicken. Our server was superb: friendly, with great recommendations and knowledgeable about wine."
