I've been here before, but I picked this spot because of the unique menu items. My guest and I conducted our business quietly, and without interruption, thoroughly enjoying the evening.

There was a smell of garbage wafting from the kitchen to our table, our crab cakes tasted fishy and were a bit cold in the middle and my martini was made incorrectly - twice. We went somewhere else for our anniversary dinner after just having an appetizer.

We were the only ones in the restaurant and the waitress brought me a caesar salad without any dressing on it. She said she had gotten it confused with another person's order, but no one was there. Not great food, but the people there were very nice.

After arriving and staying for the first time in Minneapolis, I booked the Normandy Kitchen for a late lunch. I was surprised to find it in a Best Western, which made me rethink my booking. The ambiance is dated and very mute. I sat at the bar and ordered the rotisserie chicken. The chicken was very good. I thought the service was accommodating for the late lunch. The Normandy Kitchen exceeded my expectations.

  • Henry VIII Nostalgia

I remember this restaurant from my childhood. The kitchen was the grill for the Normandy Inn, with a more formal restaurant behind it. What was most notable was the prominence of Henry VIII, a true gourmand, as the kitchen's north star. So I had to have the Henry VIII buyer, the last vestige of those wonderful days. The burger was good, the service excellent, my glass of pinot noir ample and well-priced, the ambience a little too quiet (perhaps Henry VIII in a pensive mood). The fries were quite good. Like most trips down memory lane, it's not possible to go back, but the Normandy Kitchen provided a solid dinner.

The three of us decided to enjoy a nice dinner at the Normandy Kitchen after wandering around at the Auto Show. It has been many years since we ate here and we enjoyed our food very much. The service was good, my chicken was great as was our daughter's pork tenderloin. We finished with their Chess Pie - never heard of it before but it was quite good. Also, the hot chocolate is the best treat ever. Give it a try.

  • best steak of my life

I almost never get steak at a restaurant because for me it is generally overpriced and I'd be just as happy with something else. The Au pouivre (i know i spelled it wrong) which is steak in brandy cream sauce caught my attention as being something different and I really just wanted to try it. It was so friggin' good. I cannot imagine that it gets much better than this. I don't really have the funds to do a steak house tour and find out. So for me, if I want a really good steak - I'll probably just come back to Normandy Kitchen. Don't get me wrong, I will try to duplicate a close second of this recipe at home. I also tried the beet Manhattan martini. I thought it was very original and well balanced. I had the house merlot - very solid!

I hadn't been there for over 30 years, but wanted a casual dinner destination. The dining room was warm and cozy and not crowded. Only one server was taking care of everyone, but she was very efficient and personable. I had the brined pork tenderloin with au gratin potato, and my fresh carrots were supposed to have a mustard glaze, but it was forgotten. Our server offered to have it remade, but it wasn't a big deal. My spouse had the crusted walleye with a lovely wild and white rice side, and a Caesar salad. The salad was not good. Fresh romaine, a few dry croutons, anchovy and an absolutely tasteless dressing. No garlic, no lemon, no flavor. Popovers were fabulous. Would recommend and we won't wait another 30 years to go back!

Its been 35 years since we last ate at the "Kitchen". The last time-- the day after our wedding. Happily our positive memories were reinforced by brunch last Sunday. The popovers were light, yet crispy on the outside--the cinnamon was a wonderful feature. We shared a plate a plate of apple fritter French toast with real maple syrup and an omelet that consisted of sausage, avocado and tomatoes. The texture of the French toast was sweet and chewy--perfect. The maple syrup made it taste like dessert. YUM! The omelet was light with wonderful texture. Te accompanying English muffin was thicker than what is generally available at stores. The service was top-notch. The staff was so prompt there was no need for second requests. We will be back!

I couldn't even remember the last time I ate at The Normandy Kitchen, but my wife was really in the mood for a great hamburger and I suggested that we give one of the original great hamburgers a try. We had the hamburger, rotisserie chicken sliders, and a popover to share. All were great! Bonus points for great skin-on fries. There were a number of other casual and full meal items that looked good and we'll try them next time. We ate on a Sunday night at about 7:30. It was beyond quiet, which was actually a nice change from the places where you scream at each other to be heard.

In my travels I've eaten in restaurants all over the U.S., and this place managed to take the prize for the worst service ever. 25 minutes before I got any type of service, and then another 25 minutes before I received my first course! Also, while my server tried to be nice and apologetic about the slow service, he offered other diners a free drink, including the patron right next to me, and bypassed me. The food, while better than the service, was strictly so-so. At least it was not expensive. I think that's about the best thing I can say about this dining experience.

We loved the food there! I substituted au gratin potatoes for fries and I was so happy I did that. They were the best au gratin potatoes I've ever had. My husbands twice baked potato was delicious. Steaks were prepared as ordered. The service was pretty good. They had a mix up on who was waiting on our table and as the restaurant got busier, the waitress was less attentive and asked us twice if we wanted dessert. Overall, the experience was good and I would definitely go back there again!

Wonderful dinner and attentive, friendly service. Our food was even delivered by the chef. We had a special birthday dinner for my 88-year-old mother, and she - along with everyone else - really enjoyed it. For years The Normandy has been known for their popovers, and although they are no longer complimentary ($3 ea.) they are as good as I remember. The place was not busy at all on a Saturday night, which makes me sad because we had a very good experience.

    Dined on 12/15/2012
Took my Dad to the Normandy for the Lutefisk dinner. Food was pretty good, but the service was a bit lacking. Our waiter was nice, but disappeared for most of the night. Our glasses were often empty, and we didn't see our waiter for long periods of time. My Dad asked for some melted butter for his Lutefisk, and was told they did not have any butter to give him. (What restaurant does not have butter?) When we ordered dessert, I got the Banana Cream pie. Presentation was nice, but a few bites into it, the bananas were overripe (brown), and the pie crust appeared undercooked. The waiter said he would deduct it from our bill, but again, he disappeared for a long period of time and never came back.

I took my team here for lunch. Quiet/cozy place. Burgers were really good. Salmon special was decent. Shakes were more milk than ice cream. Kitchen took a VERY long time for main course, even though the restaurant was nearly vacant. Desert - which consisted of 4 slices of pie and some coffee - took almost as long as the main course to arrive. It wasn't a horrible place, but with all of the available options in downtown Minneapolis, I won't be going back.

The food was good. The wine was very good. The calamari was cooked nicely but a bit greasy. The pork was flavorful and tender but a bit salty. The new au gratin potatoes were bland and could have been done more; they needed more cheese and I wish I could have transferred some of the salt in the pork. The waitress was nice (but a bit slow considering it was really quiet). The atmosphere was nice, quiet, romantic and we didn't feel rushed. I would visit the Normandy Kitchen again.

We were excited to try Normandy because the menu looked fantastic and the few reviews we read were mostly raves vs rants. I will admit we were apprehensive when we walked up and saw that 1) the entry was through the hotel lobby and 2) it was nearly empty on a Saturday evening. Service was exceptional (no surprise since we were one of only a few tables), drinks were fabulous (I wish I hadn't been driving because I wanted to try more), and the food was absolutely delicious. The other 3 in my party went for the horseradish crusted walleye with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and all were oohing and yumming the whole way through the plate. I tried the lobster Mac and Cheese and it pretty well shut me up for 25 minutes while I savored it. Go!
