Diner Reviews
  • "We had a delicious, celebratory meal at Lalimes. My husband proposed there 21 years ago on his birthday and we go back every year on that date as well as for other events. The meal began with a delicious roasted corn soup and carefully seasoned ceasar salad. The Piri Piri chicken had a tasty crust and the eggplant was the best I have ever had. The portions were go generous that I took half of it home for lunch the next day. My husband had the extremely tender boneless pork chop with bok choy. We ended with a lovely fruit crumble with home made ice cream and a complimentary glass of calvados. The service was efficient but unobtrusive. We had the same table upstairs where my husband popped the question."

  • "Always like going back to Lalime's - we are not as close as we used to be, but always try on our anniversary to get back there. The food is always top notch, the ambiance is very nice, but with a hint of CA relaxed to it."

  • "This restaurant was superb, everything was delicious and the service outstanding. I would highly recommend Lalime's and will definitely return."

  • "Our dining experience at Lalime's was outstanding. The pork and the lamb entrees were superb....delicious, cooked perfectly, and presented in a creative way. The service was just right and I appreciate the table cloths (something most restaurants seem to lack."

  • "The pork and lamb dishes were inventive - they were both moist and not over-cooked. One of our party chose the chicken and found it a little overly spicy for her taste. The server could have been a bit more engaged. We enjoyed the relaxed pace and ambience of Lalime's, which was conducive to conversation. Serving sizes are moderate."

  • "My sweetie took me out for a pre-Father's Day treat and this is where I chose. It was my first time here and I would highly recommend it others."

  • "We arrived early to be told that our request for a table by the window could not be honored, no apology, and were seated in a booth across from the window. Water was promptly delivered. We waited 17 minutes before our waiter arrived. He unapologeticlly announced that he'd been busy but was 'here now' even after having the length of our wait pointed out. It took another 20 minutes for our drinks, two glasses of wine, to arrive, again with no apology. When our 'anniversary special' dinners finally arrived, we were out of wine but weren't offered refills by the waiter who was busy interacting with the couple at the window table across from us. We had to remind him that dessert were included with the special. It was saddening."

  • "I enjoyed the fixed price special of buttermilk fried chicken with a unique potato salad and green beans. The chicken was beautifully crisp on the outside with tender meat on the inside! Also, the bread pudding for dessert was excellent-not too sweet."

  • "Love this restaurant. Great food, friendly staff. Most if my special dinners here now."

  • "We haven't been to Lalime's in quite a while. I'd forgotten how good it was. I had beef medallions -- great flavor. I had the strawberry shortcake for dessert -- the biscuit was notably wonderful, but could have used a couple more strawberries. I won't wait so long to go back."

  • "We had a party of 10 for a rehearsal dinner at Lalime's, which had reserved a small room with an oblong table allowing everyone to converse with everyone else at the table. It was a perfect setting for us because the room made the occasion intimate and welcoming. The food was varied (I believe they change the menue frequently), and everyone enjoyed his or her entree. The staff were gracious and attentive. The wedding was to be Persian, and we rehearsed at the dining table! We'll definitely come back to Lalime's, a favorite of our son, when we're in Berkeley."

  • "Lalimes had been recommended to us as a nice, special occasion restaurant, and that is just what we found. We ordered the lamb chop and loin and the fettucinni. The lamb on lentils was excellent. The fettucini was rather ordinary; my wife commented, "too much olive oil." Dinner for two, with wine, was just over $100, which we thought was a good value."

  • "Happy crowd at 7 on Saturday night. Sat in the upstairs section as a change of pace - found we prefer the downstairs. Lovely wines by the glass. Calamari starter was terrific; grilled baby gems were tasty but too much bacon and blue cheese. Salmon was wonderful; pea fettucine OK. Gelato was excellent. As usual, we had a lovely evening at Lalime's - always a pleasure."

  • "Table for 4 - all food was great. Lamb cooked to perfection, appropriate portion, not underdone as too often the case in USA - beet salad was right size, nice mix of flavors, Zinfandel was just right, service very good. "

  • "We took my brother-in-law for his birthday. The staff was great. The food was wonderful. We all had a great time. The noise level was fine, we could easily hold conversations.y husband has been coming here for more than 20 years! Keep it up."

  • "We close the BRT season with a dinner at Lalimes. My wife ordered the beets for an appetizer, and said they were fantastic. Please keep them on the menu in season. She ordered the pasta dish as a main course and was delighted. I had the Pin Pin chicken paired with egg plant. The chef has a winner with this. The yoghurt batter on the chicken kept it moist and tender. Most of us had gelato for dessert. My wife loved the Pavlova. Seconds on coffee would be appreciated. No one asked."

  • "Wonderful upgrade for a consistently good Berkeley gem. The new chef is imaginative but the food is approachable and delicious; this is, in my opinion, a lost art in many expensive Northern California restaurants. Berkeley ambiance is very casual and relaxed. The bar is small but lively and the split level seems to hold the noise level down so that it feels cozy and private at your table."

  • "My three meat eater dining companions were quite happy. My seafood / salad choices were not impressive however. The steamed mussels were bland, my salad was saturated with blue cheese dressing, and the lobster salad consisted of four chewy pieces of lobster. Others in my party were thrilled with their steak and chicken dishes though, and the desserts were outstanding. The service was lovely."

  • "Lalime's new chef has revamped the menu and turned this comfortable neighborhood spot into a destination restaurant. The food was fabulous and the service friendly and attentive. We've been there twice in the last three weeks--I'm not sure that yet makes us regulars, but I'm sure we will be soon. "

  • "The staff was amazing - courteous, friendly, helpful, and so nice! We were celebrating my son's graduation from Berkeley, and the waitress even added special touches like sprinkling graduation confetti at his place setting. Food was superb - I had the seared skate and it was moist and delicious. Go for dessert - rasperry sourcream pie or warm chocolate fondant cake or dark chocolate gelato...to die for! "

  • "We shared Lobster roll, mussels, lamb with pasta and more--but those were our very favorites. Oh, and the chocolate cake was a perfect ending. Lovely comfortable environment. We will be back and will tell others! "

  • "Our LA friends dined here for the first time while visiting....they were stunned at the quality of the dishes, the excellent service and intimate feel. We live in the Bay Area, and are spoiled: we have Lalime's in our one-mile neighborhood environs, and sometimes forget just how spoiled we are with cuisine par excellence. It takes an outsider sometimes to Know the Inside scoop again. Thanks, Lalime's!"

  • "Dont know what the problem was but we had to wait more than a half hour between appetizers and the main course. No warning, no explanation, no apologies. We just sat there twiddling our thumbs as everyone around us enjoyed their meals. "

  • "My family - 6 total - went here for Mothers Day last weekend. We had a 6:30 reservation. We arrived on time, and ordered without delay. The drinks arrived followed by the wine and salads. We waited and waited for our entrees, which finally came out at 9pm! I realize that Mothers Day is a busy time for restaurants, but the service was exceptionally slow. Any Saturday night would have been just as full. I think the kitchen cannot produce enough food for the number of tables they have. My Caesar salad was overdressed, and entrees were fair. With all the options for dining in the Bay Area, I will cross this one off, which is too bad. We used to go here fairly often over the years , but I think service and quality have really slipped."

  • "Taking consideration it was Mothers Day I was still disappointed. Shouldn't have taken 2 1/2 hours to serve our dinner. Menu was limited and didn't make allowances for special "needs" diners. Food was cold. Portions and presentation on plate weak. Not one apology for the non-existant service which would have made our college graduation not Mothers Day celebration dinner more memorable. I frequented LaLimes when it first opened and enjoyed special occasion dinners there. This was truly not what I expected. My first time guests were too polite to complain but they will not be going back either. Sorry"

  • "As usual Lalimes came through with flying colors. We needed to change our reservation from 4 to 7 people and they accommodated us. Food was great and varied. We brought a baby with no problem. It's my go to place for special occasions."

  • "Lalimes is a decent, respectable, and popular restaurant, tucked away in a busy neighborhood of town. Tables are grouped a bit close together, and the decor is modern. Food is artfully presented and tasty. "

  • "I loved everything about our dinner at Lalime on Friday. As we arrived a few minutes before our reservation, we were welcomed nicely even before the menus were printed out. Our waiter Ryan was cute and nicr and he knew the food on the menu (loved the Halibut dish) and everything bite we ate was delicious (the house salad was delish and the dressing was wonderful). I would definitely go back. I was concerned there might not be parking but we found parking. This was our first time at Lalime and will go back on a special occasion someday."

  • "I have always wanted to go to Lalime's but never got there for some reason. I'm so sorry that I didn't! This is a wonderful restaurant with excellent food, good service and a warm, relaxed vibe. The decor and ambiance is a cross between Chez Panisse (upstairs) and Rivoli. Two dishes were standouts: the beet salad with goat cheese and pistachios and the beet papardelle with lemon sauce (new to the menu that night). I would absolutely go again."

  • "We always enjoy this place and are happy to live within walking distance, but this time, we were less impressed with the food. We shared a beet pasta and both found it flavorless and over-salted."

  • "We have eaten here four times for dinner (their specialty) and i am willing to drive for an hour to dine at LaLime's. It is one of my 4 or 5 choices for good food, great ambience, great service, good wines by the glass and bottle, all of it. The food choices are good, not excessive in number, prepared extremely well. As i said, one of my few go to restaurants. I am an older gentleman and have eaten in many. My wife shares my appreciation for this restaurant."

  • "The waiter was very strong from doing a good job opening an old bottle of wine to the appropriate level of passion for specific dishes to handling a mistake in the kitchen. The appetizers were all strong. Entrees also tasty though small portions for the price. Next time, I might go with two appetizers rather than appetizer and entree."

  • "My wife and I dined at Lalime's in on Friday evening, April 18. The neighborhood is a tad unsightly, with Lalime's looking like it dropped out of the sky. Inside the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, though one of the restrooms could stand more attention; it just wasn't clean. I was surprised that our waiter couldn't answer some of our basic questions about the dinner entrees and seemed to be guessing about ingredients. He was perfectly nice and perhaps he was new, but it's not a huge menu and I'd read such great things about the place. I thought the choices were limited for a French fusion restaurant and that the flavor and presentation of the dishes (including the bread we were served) were good but uninspired."
