  • "We eat at Lalime's pretty often. This time we had very food fussy friends with us and were embarrassed by the number of silly questions and needs they had. The waiter was remarkably cheery and every question, such as "could there be even a drop of alcohol in zabaglione?" was answered carefully. The funniest guest was the one who wanted her gazpacho "at room temperature, please". The dishes were all excellent, except the pork my husband ordered. He asked for medium rare, and it was that, but it was also cold. This was a very unusual slip-up in our experience, but after all the other fussy eaters' neediness, he chose not to mention the problem. My piri-piri chicken was particularly delicious. We'll definitely be back, minus the guests."

  • "We were a group of 7 including a 3 year old. We were given a table big enough for 8 so everyone was seated comfortably. The cocktails, the appetitizers (calamari and mussel) were all excellent. we ordered the seared local King Salmon. The salmon was perfectly done. Not overcooked and not raw. We tried ice cream and the chocolate cake and they were delightful too. Overall, it was a dinner that everyone enjoyed. We have been to Lalime's for years so we knew that we will not be disappointed."

  • "Very nice food that was well prepared. Steak was excellent as was the spicy but balanced Chicken Piri Piri. I had Salmon and though it was good the portion of Salmon for $27 was too small. I would have eaten the same again and not felt overfed. My Pinot Noir by the glass was good but my friends Cabernet tasted flat like the bottle had been open too long."

  • "Been going to Lalime's on and off for many years and have never been dissapointed in the quality of the food or the menu choices. The new menu is unispiring. I ordered the Chicken piri piri which came with tasteless egg plant and a flat bread or naan that was supposed to be served under the chicken which sounded disgusting to me. I ordered it on the side. What I got was 1/4 of what looked and tasted like a fried flour tortilla. The desert looked and tasted like something one would buy at Safeway. The only good thing was the martini. I ordered 2 and they were excellent. Bring back the sweet breads....."

  • "Came to celebrate our bosses birthday and had outstanding drinks, meals and service. Chose Lalimes because our boss is a foodie. We walked in and immediately felt the warmth and charm if the restaurant. There were 6 of us so we were seated in a small private room which was perfect. Food was excellent. I had the steak and am very picky about it being cooked to perfection and it was amazing! Better than many high end foodie places I've been to. Also got to taste the Piri Piri chicken, the salmon, and the pasta which were all excellent. Calamari appetizer was delicious, as were the Cesar and Arugula salads. Finished withs cappuccino and shared desserts which were all top notch! I will definitely come again!"

  • "We had a delicious, celebratory meal at Lalimes. My husband proposed there 21 years ago on his birthday and we go back every year on that date as well as for other events. The meal began with a delicious roasted corn soup and carefully seasoned ceasar salad. The Piri Piri chicken had a tasty crust and the eggplant was the best I have ever had. The portions were go generous that I took half of it home for lunch the next day. My husband had the extremely tender boneless pork chop with bok choy. We ended with a lovely fruit crumble with home made ice cream and a complimentary glass of calvados. The service was efficient but unobtrusive. We had the same table upstairs where my husband popped the question."

  • "The pork and lamb dishes were inventive - they were both moist and not over-cooked. One of our party chose the chicken and found it a little overly spicy for her taste. The server could have been a bit more engaged. We enjoyed the relaxed pace and ambience of Lalime's, which was conducive to conversation. Serving sizes are moderate."

  • "We arrived early to be told that our request for a table by the window could not be honored, no apology, and were seated in a booth across from the window. Water was promptly delivered. We waited 17 minutes before our waiter arrived. He unapologeticlly announced that he'd been busy but was 'here now' even after having the length of our wait pointed out. It took another 20 minutes for our drinks, two glasses of wine, to arrive, again with no apology. When our 'anniversary special' dinners finally arrived, we were out of wine but weren't offered refills by the waiter who was busy interacting with the couple at the window table across from us. We had to remind him that dessert were included with the special. It was saddening."

  • "Happy crowd at 7 on Saturday night. Sat in the upstairs section as a change of pace - found we prefer the downstairs. Lovely wines by the glass. Calamari starter was terrific; grilled baby gems were tasty but too much bacon and blue cheese. Salmon was wonderful; pea fettucine OK. Gelato was excellent. As usual, we had a lovely evening at Lalime's - always a pleasure."

The lamb on lentils was excellent. The fettucini was rather ordinary; my wife commented, "too much olive oil." Dinner for two, with wine, was just over $100, which we thought was a good value."

  • "We had a party of 10 for a rehearsal dinner at Lalime's, which had reserved a small room with an oblong table allowing everyone to converse with everyone else at the table. It was a perfect setting for us because the room made the occasion intimate and welcoming. The food was varied (I believe they change the menue frequently), and everyone enjoyed his or her entree. The staff were gracious and attentive. The wedding was to be Persian, and we rehearsed at the dining table! We'll definitely come back to Lalime's, a favorite of our son, when we're in Berkeley."

  • "We close the BRT season with a dinner at Lalimes. My wife ordered the beets for an appetizer, and said they were fantastic. Please keep them on the menu in season. She ordered the pasta dish as a main course and was delighted. I had the Pin Pin chicken paired with egg plant. The chef has a winner with this. The yoghurt batter on the chicken kept it moist and tender. Most of us had gelato for dessert. My wife loved the Pavlova. Seconds on coffee would be appreciated. No one asked."

  • "My three meat eater dining companions were quite happy. My seafood / salad choices were not impressive however. The steamed mussels were bland, my salad was saturated with blue cheese dressing, and the lobster salad consisted of four chewy pieces of lobster. Others in my party were thrilled with their steak and chicken dishes though, and the desserts were outstanding. The service was lovely."

The new chef is imaginative but the food is approachable and delicious; this is, in my opinion, a lost art in many expensive Northern California restaurants. Berkeley ambiance is very casual and relaxed. The bar is small but lively and the split level seems to hold the noise level down so that it feels cozy and private at your table."

  • "The staff was amazing - courteous, friendly, helpful, and so nice! We were celebrating my son's graduation from Berkeley, and the waitress even added special touches like sprinkling graduation confetti at his place setting. Food was superb - I had the seared skate and it was moist and delicious. Go for dessert - rasperry sourcream pie or warm chocolate fondant cake or dark chocolate gelato...to die for! "

We live in the Bay Area, and are spoiled: we have Lalime's in our one-mile neighborhood environs, and sometimes forget just how spoiled we are with cuisine par excellence.   • "Taking consideration it was Mothers Day I was still disappointed. Shouldn't have taken 2 1/2 hours to serve our dinner. Menu was limited and didn't make allowances for special "needs" diners. Food was cold. Portions and presentation on plate weak. Not one apology for the non-existant service which would have made our college graduation not Mothers Day celebration dinner more memorable. I frequented LaLimes when it first opened and enjoyed special occasion dinners there. This was truly not what I expected. My first time guests were too polite to complain but they will not be going back either. Sorry"

  • "My family - 6 total - went here for Mothers Day last weekend. We had a 6:30 reservation. We arrived on time, and ordered without delay. The drinks arrived followed by the wine and salads. We waited and waited for our entrees, which finally came out at 9pm! I realize that Mothers Day is a busy time for restaurants, but the service was exceptionally slow. Any Saturday night would have been just as full. I think the kitchen cannot produce enough food for the number of tables they have. My Caesar salad was overdressed, and entrees were fair. With all the options for dining in the Bay Area, I will cross this one off, which is too bad. We used to go here fairly often over the years , but I think service and quality have really slipped."
