This restaurant was a real find. In Berkeley for a conference; everyone queuing for Chez Panisse, and I was so happy we went here instead. The food was spectacular--wonderful and original blends of flavors, service attentive without being intrusive. Lots of tables packed into a small space made it a little crowded but everyone at my table was pleased to have discovered this gem of a restaurant: a wonderful evening.

First time to Lalime's. Upon first entering the restaurant, we all really liked the vibe. Our pre-dinner cocktails we are all great, as were our first courses. But all five of us thought our second courses were too small though the flavors were excellent. In my pappardelle and mushrooms, there were only 5 noodles, which seems like a first course portion, not a second, especially because pappardelle is in the title. We had no time for dessert as we were seeing a play after dinner, so we all left wanting more and a bit hungry. I think order to leave satisfied and full, one would need to have time to at least order 3 courses. With that said, small portions was our only complaint about the meal!

Food was excellent, i had the boullaibaise, the butter lettuce salad was also excellent. However, service could be improved a little bit. They were packed on that saturday, but it took about 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive and another hour for our food. It wasn't that bad of a wait, considering, except if you happen to be starving.

As usual, our dinner at Lalimes was perfect. The sweetbreads were perfectly cooked, tender, crisp and delicious. Two other members of our party had the Lobster Thermidor, which was elegantly presented and delicious. The wine was reasonable and excellent. Our server was friendly, attentive, and unobtrusive, which is the ideal combination. We always make a point of trying to dine at Lalimes whenever we return to the Bay Area for visits.

The last time I had been to Lalime's was 18 years ago. My elderly parents lived in Berkeley and it was their fave. Just as good if not better than my memories. A true gem tucked away in a lovely residential part of Berkeley. The best dining experience my husband and I have had in a long time. And we are real "foodies" too!
