Diner Reviews
  • "Don't be discouraged by the restaurant's location on the second floor of the Doubletree Inn. The room is tasteful and understated. The tables are well spaced so conversation is possible. The Peking duck was exceptional, but the rest of the food was undistinguished . Our server was helpful and efficient."

  • "incredibly disappointed with our dinner. we could have gone anywhere for less than half the cost and had equal or better food. nothing special. If this is the best Chinese Toronto has top offer, I suggest Italian."

  • "The service was very good, for the most part. But the food was a big disappointment, decent quality but no real flavour to most of the dishes."

  • "A fancy dim sum restaurant with the requisite fancy prices."

  • "This has been our old time favourite Chinese restaurant with excellent service and innovative dishes. We went for dim sum this time. Service was still outstanding but the dim sum menu was lacking surprises unlike what it used to be. We enjoyed our meal. The Foie Gras with Minced Pork tart was so flavourful and tasty. We enjoyed the lobster dumplings, but the rest on the menu was just ordinary dim sum at higher prices. There used to be more interesting dim sum dishes. Hope they continue to offer innovative and interesting dishes for their patrons to enjoy."

  • "The beijing duck is impeccable as always. It has always been and will always be my reason for coming back. The service is good, but I'm still not so sure about the other dishes… They haven't quite met up to my standards yet although they are interesting and are pretty decent. It may have been me choosing the wrong stuff."

  • "Much too expensive. Food is good but not outstanding... which it should be at that price."

  • "The title says it all. Good, clean food. Upscale place. A bit on the expensive side but well worth it. I will be going back."

  • "First, the guidebooks still say this restaurant is in the Metropolitan hotel but the hotel was taken over by Doubletree. Confusing when looking for the place. We arrived for lunch at 2:00. After we ordered and got some tea, all of the food items arrived in a steady stream so we had everything all at once. As we were eating one fish the others were rapidly cooling on the table. Boo. However the food was very good and fresh and artfully presented. Don't know if we'll go back with so many other options in town."

  • "Food was very good for Chinese but nothing spectacular for the high price paid. Setting was beautiful but very loud with groups present. Service attentive but not friendly or personable. Better options in Toronto for Asian food exist,"

  • " You can always count on an exquisite meal at Lai Wah Heen."

  • "I can not understand why this restaurant is high rating from a Chinese point of View the food is too oil and not good at all...Many Chinese Restaurant in Markham is much better than is.. and for sure is cheaper. I dine twice 100+ for 2 people at dimsum and 200+ for 2 people for dinner nothing about money but service is so bad waiting long time for the sweet dim sum and they said since it is dessert so should come at last ???I dine more than 15+ dim sum top restaurant in Toronto and first meet this situation... waitress is so rude and always keep on arguing..."

  • "This is the second time I went to this one. The first experience is okay and it is quiet and good for chat. However, in this second time, it is such a bad and embarassing experience."

  • "Great dim sum in the heart of the city. Service is impeccable and the dumplings and other offerings are delectable."

  • "it is my pleasure to contribute my first ever online food review to Lai Wah Heen! It's definitely one of the best Cantonese restaurant in Toronto. Upscale decor, conveient downtown location, good service, and most importantly really tasty and delicate food!"

  • "My guests and I enjoyed lunch and the service overall. However, the servers seemed a bit rushed and rattled when setting our table because they made a lot of noise with the plates. As well, the servers did not ask us, non-Chinese people if we needed forks and knives. Lastly, one dish was forgotten and we hope we were not charged for it. A final comment: we liked the different outfits worn by the staff and their friendly faces."

  • "Very quiet, great for conducting business meeting. Staff are friendly and service is good. The food quality is somewhat disappointing taking into consideration of the price. The food at this restaurant used to be amazing amongst all the Chinese restaurants in Toronto a few years ago. However, while other restaurants have been improving this restaurant has not made any progress, as a result, the food is considered average at best when comparing to others, especially the ones in Markham and Richmond Hill."

  • "Lai Wah Heen never disappoints. We went for dimsum and the quality of the food is good as always. We love the BBQ pork bun and har kaw. Will go back for the peking duck!"

  • "We love the service and the ambiance. Not a busy night when we were there. Food came out very promptly, we had the prawn crispy roll, the lobster in crispy roll, dungeness crab with salty egg yolk - all very delicious. Hubby ordered a beef dish and mom ordered a seafood in 3 sauces (too spicy for us) and it was just okay. Dessert was also okay with tapioca with mango, lichee. Hubby had the ice cream."

  • "Pretty ordinary, with a limited menu. But then, I am used to dim sum from Vancouver, San Francisco, and the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. Not a fair comparison."

  • "The timing when the food comes out can be improved, meaning that instead of just one dish coming out, why not have 3-4 dishes at the table so people can eat a variety of food at the same time. i.e. we ordered the ma paw tofu and a rice dish but these came out separately, the ma paw tofu needs rice to make it a whole meal. The rice only came out once everyone finished their ma paw tofu dishes."

  • "The food is exceptional. Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurant in town. I particularly like the tea selection. The price is on the high side, but worth it."

  • "Exquisite contemporary Cantonese cuisine served in a traditional manner by Hong Kong waiters"

  • "I ate lunch here about ten years ago and it was wonderful. This time I thought the food was inferior - the most mediocre dim sum I've ever tasted. And the service was not great either. The restaurant was only a quarter full but my friends and I felt fairly ignored the entire time. It was also very expensive. None of us will be returning."

  • "The restaurant was a little difficult to find; it is on a side street and the 2nd floor of the Doubletree hotel. But once we got there the service and food were great - the Peking duck was very tasty, the lettuce wraps a wonderful follow up and the main courses more than sufficient. The only issue we had was the poor quality and expensive wine list. We did not realize this was also a BYOB place until too late and even then there is a $25 corkage fee. Overall would definitely recommend."

  • "The restaurant has never been renovated and it looks exactly the same as 15 years ago. Time to have a major renovation to resume it's best Chinese restaurant in Toronto."

  • "Food is good ... the dim sum is pricier than most because the restaurant is in a prime downtown location. Remember, they have to pay their staff and overhead costs and rent etc. So $6.50 for 4 pieces of har gow may seem expensive, compared to other restaurants in Chinatown, I suppose it is reasonable; again, because of the location of the restaurant. In total, there were 3 of us and the bill (with tax and tip) came up to $140 (for dim sum). (Mind you, we ordered extra for take-out ... so the food was really for 4 people). The restaurant gets rave reviews, so I had to try it once. I can't see myself returning though, as there are other expensive dim sum places to try (e.g. Crown Princess, Pearl etc.). Over all, a good experience."

  • "My wife and I have dined at LWHR perhaps once a year for the last twenty years. We have hosted gatherings of ten people on a couple of occasions and on one memorable occasion we booked the private divining room for a much larger group. We have always found the staff, decor, service, and food to be superb. The prices seem to us to be about right. LWHR was the ideal venue to celebrate both Mother's Day and our Wedding Anniversary (our 55th!). The only false note was the condition of the washrooms, both men's and women's. There seemed to be evidence of a flood of some sort. We saw a notice to the effect that something or other was out of order. We look forward to our next visit. Thank you for maintaining quality and standards. "

  • "Service was not very pleasant. Was ignored when I first walked in. Had to flag the wait staff. Was not asked if we wanted drinks. No recommendations given. Food was good, a step up from local Dim Sum. Dishes that were unique to restaurant were good. However the expected standard fare was just that. "

  • "Not the best dim sum in Toronto, definitely not in North America. Fancy dim sum, pretty tasty, but expected more after reading that the New York Times called this place possibly the best in North America... Will go back though"

  • "One of the finest Chinese restaursnts I'ved ever dined at. Every course was delicious, the soup, the entrees, the rice, and the desserts. Service was as good as I 've ever experienced. Beautiful dining room and very convenient for us as we staying at the Doubletree hotel in which the restaurant is located."

  • "We made the reservation for 8:15 pm..we were on time and the tables were prepared for our party of 16... The food was ok..nothing out of this world...but we feel that it was late for them..when we ordered the desserts the kitchen was closed, they should notify that before..and the whiskey ended ... Not recomended"

  • "From waiting to be acknowledged at the door, to waiting for a server, waiting for tea, waiting for water to then being served the worst cooked food I've experienced to the pricing to the continued bad service, I am not sure how this restaurant is in business. This restaurant doesn't even deserve one star but there is not an option for that."

  • "The food was spectacular with prices to match. In all my travels across USA and Canada, I have found no dim sum better."

  • "There is a need to re-design the dim sum menu, which has not been revitalized for over a year. Many years ago, there used to be a wide variety of choices and new menus every few months."
