Beautiful, open space with great food. Their croissants are some of the best I've had in NYC. My only warning is that Sunday brunch can feel quite loud and cramped. I came here w/ a girlfriend during peak brunch hours and had to wait about 20 minutes even with a reservation. The tables are pretty tightly packed, so at times i felt like my neighbors' conversation was louder than my own. That being said the hosts and waitstaff were attentive and gracious. I'd go back, but maybe not during peak brunch hours.

Sunday is not generally a good day for NYC restaurants, but Lafayette was booming and bountiful. Almost all the tables were taken at 6 pm, but the noise levels were still acceptable. The menu was exciting, but the specials even more so. We loved the service and everyone was delighted with the food. Did I mention how beautiful the place is. One small complaint: the tables were very close together, but on the other hand the table were quite large, so I imagine that is the price you pay. It is a stone's throw from the Public, so we will surely be there again soon. And I am eyeing those lovely outside tables in case summer ever comes again.

Had a terrific Saturday lunch at Lafayette. HAd made reservations for noon. Surprised to see Lafayette packed. We were celebrating a birthday. By happenstance, friends we hadn't seen in years, were seated in the booth next to us. A lively crowd, nice mix of people. Good mixed drinks. And, the food. Great bistro food.

We had the most outrageously delicious cauliflower salad (it was a special starter). Inspired, and I never thought I could say that about cauliflower. Tuna Niçoise spaghetti was also wonderful. My husband loved the duck as well. It's a bit noisy, but the service was terrific - the waiter gave great recommendations about what's a must try and what we could pass on. Great atmosphere. Definitely worth going again. And again.

After my excellent lunch here on 11/10, I expected the same on 11/14 but not so. Yes it was very busy and crowded and I didn't get a table I would have liked. The bad experience started when I sat down and had to ask for a menu after some 10 min of waiting. Had to wait another while to order from a waitress who was very unavailable and talked to busboys a lot. My dessert came out before the meal twice!

Down Lafayette Avenue from the Public Theater, this large and comfortable multi-leveled space has a great looking bar, banquets around the edges and tables in irregular nooks, which makes them cozy in a way one wouldn't expect. The service was professional, prompt, and very helpful. Good wine list, and wonderful, elegantly presented food. There's an excellent review on The New Yorker website. It was a bit noisy when we arrived (7:30), and we had trouble hearing the high-pitched voice of our waitress in the din, but the noise level settled down as the evening progressed. Dinner for four with two bottles of Wine, $440 with tip. Highly recommended.

After dining at Lafayette, I decided that I'm done with French food. The menus are the same from restaurant to restaurant. I had pate de foie gras and mussels, not very different than I would have eaten 30 years ago. i like to be surprised with fabulous ingredients. Nothing particularly exciting here. French food has not evolved as other cuisines have. But I did appreciate the almost exclusively French wine list. So au revoir, French food.

Despite reservations, we were seated 15 minutes late. Nice vibe (until the noise level escalated enormously preventing any normal conversation), menu appealing then the food came: over salted, under flavored and really slow to arrive. Not at bargain prices either. I dine out much in NYC, especially East Village and LES-won't hurry back here for any reason.

I love the vibe, the food, the clientele, the service. Our waiter slipped in an unexpected quip into our conversation that was so hilarious, our party couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes. The restaurant recreates the feel of a great Parisian bistro, and better than the French can do.

3 of us were from SC and 2 from NJ. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The food was wonderful, service excellent and since we are "mature" individuals we could actually hear each other speak. A real bonus for senior citizens. Most places the size of this restaurant are very loud and you can't hear someone next to you and certainly not across the table.

Despite the respected chef, this turned out to be a dud. We sent back the frisee salad because the overly salty viniagrette was inedible. Then my husband (a professional chef) asked if they could prepare a vegetarian pasta with vegetables (any kitchen should be able to do, let alone a chef's restaurant known for it's pasta). What arrived was a joke - plain pasta, a bit of olive oil, no veggies. My husband said "it looked like a kids meal" (which later when we got the check it was, in fact, listed on the bill as "kids pasta" - no joke). The poor waiter totally understand why we sent it back, but returned with same plain pasta (with a sprinkle of parsley) and a side broccoli of rabe. Really? Manager didn't even come over to apologize.

This large handsome restaurant has a great Manhattan feel. lots of diners, good food, great service. My wife and I both enjoyed excellent salads, especially my beet salad. Ravioli was properly cooked. . MW is not a pasta eater and did not find anything any of the menu entrees to her liking so she ordered a couple of side dishes. Well satisfied. We shared a tasty tart..coffee outstanding. All service employees do a terrific job in making our meal enjoyable. Not inexpensive but worth the price. We dined pre theater and wait staff was cognizant of our time constraint and delivered out plates on a timely schedule.

We dined before seeing "Here Lies Love" at the Public & could scarcely tear ourselves away. Service was impeccable, and everything we tried-- from whole wheat French bread to roasted beets to artichoke pasta---was imaginative & colorful. My dry Alsatian Riesling was a knockout, pairing perfectly with the absolutely delicious grilled local trout (not from the East River, I hope!) and superb choucroute. Skipped dessert to make curtain, but we WILL be back to this civilized, creative place.

One of my friends had highly recommended Lafayette, and at first, I thought it would just be another formulaic New York brunch spot. I arrived and was very pleasantly surprised by the sight of people eating outside on the front patio on what was a beautiful day. I walked in, and it was styled in a traditional French manner, with natural light filling the room. A very packed room that exuded charming energy. My friends and I ordered the assorted pastries to share, which were AMAZING, and I ordered the soft scramble which came with brioche with pesto. I can still taste the brioche melting in my mouth. The service was very pleasant too, not too imposing but available and friendly. I loved the vibe and can't wait to go back again for brunch.

Delicious brunch. The eggs were so fluffy and fresh. The omelette melted like buttah in our mouths. The French toast was decadent. The home fries/potatoes were amazing -- crispy, salty, flavorful and not dripping in oil. Great coffee, too. The breadbasket had a great selection as well and each was delicious. Our server was attentive without hovering. She cheerfully served us even though our baby knocked over a water glass and broke it. Not the cheapest place around but the food and service were worth the premium.
