A word from Lafayette
Lafayette is an everyday French restaurant conducting the spirit of French dining anew in downtown Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood. Open morning, noon and night, this grand café and bakery is dedicated to Chef Andrew Carmellini's market-driven bistro cooking in a timeless hallmark setting. Our light-flushed dining room features soaring arched windows overlooking the NoHo streetscapes and a lively rotisserie bar. Our corner boulangerie-patisserie is open all hours offering artisanal breads, croissants, Stumptown coffee drinks, a light breakfast or lunch and a host of confections. In warm weather months, our sidewalk cafe opens daily for open air lunch, brunch and dinner service.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Had the egg/sun dried tomato sandwich and the bread basket at brunch, and it was delicious! We had a reservation and were seated right away. Only complaint is that they don't serve alcohol at brunch before noon."

  • "My dish was lackluster and did not match the description on the menu. Although the waitress took the item off our bill when I complained, she did not check in during the meal, so I had no opportunity to ask for the dish to be returned or remade. Overpriced, given the quality of the food."

  • "We were served by a well trained army. My water was never 1/2 empty and when my cocktail was 65% finished I was asked if I needed another. Food was tasty and adventurous. May be a little scary in French writing, but on the plate it was superb."

  • "I think we expected more than could be delivered...Champagne by the glass...too warm. Once the somelier was alerted, she immediately replaced with newly opened bottle (I guess that one was refrigerated more) but regardless, the glasses should have been the right temp. to start with. My lamb chops were good but again, warm vs hot.... It is a large place and fills a need in the neighborhood but if you are looking for an outstanding meal--this isn't it. It is just fine-no more, no less. Would I go back...yes, with modified expectations."

  • "While this restaurant is trying very hard, what it lacks is the essence of every good restaurant -- its personnel's charm. It seems as the waiters were trained to be stiff rather than having people skills. The sommelier shows a certain degree of knowledge about the wines listed, then pours the wine of the second bottle onto your first still in the glass. Well. The food is o.k., though the portions somewhat "out of proportion", and as for the silverware, I would prefer NOT to have to eat my tender lamb shops with the boldest steak knife ever seen, fit to kill a buffalo. Overall, the few times I have eaten at Lafayette, it turned out to be a mediocre experience. "

  • "I had been wanting to dine at Lafayette since moving to NYC three years ago and just never made it, until last week. The ambience was great; bustling and romantically lit. And just loud enough that no one could hear your dinner conversation except you. But the food was not such a fine balance. High prices with less than dazzling plates. A disappointment for sure; overcooked mussels, overcooked duck. The pros: deliciously fresh oysters, perfectly cooked cuddlefish pasta. I would go again, if someone else was paying, or if all of the other restaurants with the same price point but delicious food were closed."

  • "Great Food, Great Atmosphere and reasonable for NoHo"

  • "A place that gets better upon trying it again is a place to visit regularly and a place to tell your friends about without equivocation. That is Lafayette for me now."

  • "Enjoyed the entire dining experience, especially the attentive staff and metered service. It was a superb meal! I would highly recommend the Lafayette!"

  • "After a second visit for me and a third for my companion, we agreed that it's a destination both festive and worth the trip from uptown. We shared the black fettucine with seafood and chorizo and the brisket cheeseburger; both were perfectly seasoned and the chorizo was not too spicy, just as the waiter promised when I voiced my concern. I had a lovely rosé and my friend had iced tea (served with sugar syrup, a thoughtful touch). We shared a plate of bite-sized canelé and the lemon meringue tart and both were delicious. Service was attentive and friendly. It was quieter than usual inside because it was just after noon on the first day of Passover and the first really beautiful day, so people were dining at the outdoor tables."

  • "I was a little disappointed, because the decor is picture perfect, the food and service were very average.I prefer Balthazar for that type of restaurant.Maybe we had an isolated experience, and it ll be better next time?"

  • "As always breakfast was excellent, service to food. Love this place."

  • "This is a beautiful restaurant serving excellent french bistro food. Wine list is extensive and there are a number of moderately priced wines. We shared 10 Shikoku oysters which were excellent. Very very tasty. Served with cocktail sauce with the option to add horseradish and vinaigrette. The latter is much better with these oysters. Our main courses were buckwheat rigatoni and steak frites. Both excellent. By then too full for dessert so we had a cappuccino and a decaf coffee. Our wine was a Chablis. Very very good restaurant with excellent food and service."

  • "Every corner of this restaurant and it's patio is an Instagram waiting to happen (and that's exactly what 3/4 of the people who eat here are doing). The brunch menu contains all your typical NYC brunch staples, are well executed, and beautifully plated. Tasty sangria (warning: it is much much stronger than it tastes)."

  • "The food just wasn't that good. its a nice room. service was ok - not as attentive as I would expect. when we arrived, we were not asked if we wanted to sit straight away, rather ushered off to the bar. we then had to ask if we could sit. its a lot of little things that add up to an fulfilling experience, but fundamentally, i was disappointed in the food."

  • "We had a pleasant but disappointing dinner at Lafayette. Everything was fine but it in no way impressed or met the expectations I had after reading reviews. My salad was extremely salty (more so than the fries!). The steak was OK but nothing special. Even the desserts were just ok."

  • "Had a great meal. We got great drinks, oysters, appetizers, dinner and dessert. The octopus appetizer was some of the best octopus I've ever had. Also the apple tart dessert was amazing. I would definitely return, though. Bit pricey for everyday. Definitely special occasion worthy."

  • "Have been a here few times and pleasantly surprised at the quality and variety of their dishes. While the space seems very large it is divided up well to provide a sense of intimacy. Excellent seafood selections with a few daily specials. An excellent choice in this no mans land."

  • "I love andrew carmellini's other restaurants, so I wasn't surprised to love this one. but I did think that a French restaurant so close to Balthazar would be difficult to compete. The restaurant is fairly large, and it wasn't that difficult to get a same day reservation on a friday. Our server was the best - we really appreciated that he was helpful, but never interrupted us. everything we ordered was excellent. loved the french onion soup, and the duck au poivre was the best duck dish I've had in awhile. Of the many restaurants in NY, this is one we will definitely crave and return to."

  • "I think their burger is outstanding. I also love their carrot appetizer. Best vegetarian dish I've had in a very long time. Liked the pasta with braised meat... Very hearty. Excellent look and feel to the place with highly self-assured service. A gem."

  • "Ambiance is great. Food was mediocre, had brunch there with my cousin and got the mushroom frittata. There was maybe 1/2 a mushroom and the rest was all egg. Service was also ok, my eggs came way before my cousin's bread and cheese. We had to constantly wave down our waitress for any attention."

  • "Came for an early Sunday brunch (10AM) as a group of 4 - and was not disappointed. This is a quintessential large French bistro, with appropriate menu & atmosphere. Food was excellent - fresh & imaginative, served promptly. The only awkward thing was to find out that surprisingly, blue laws are still on the books and are enforced by some places in NYC, so our Bloody Mary's had to be virgin until right before we were about to leave. I feel like this should be advertised beforehand to those making early Sunday morning reservations."

  • "Enjoyed a fabulous dinner with a friend. The food was amazing! Clean bright flavors. Our server Catherine/Katherine (?) was so lovely. She was so graceful and elegant. And Matthew our sommelier chose some great glasses to pair with each course. We will be back!"

  • "The food was great. The service was great. The advice was great. I may break my vow -- to never eat in the same restaurant more than twice!"

  • "Lafayette is a good restaurant, but not special. I am not a fan of Carmellini but I was hopeful because of my high opinion of Damon Wise from his days at Craft. Despite having read many negative opinions about the reception and service, we found it to be just fine. Lafayette has the general aspect of a Parisian brasserie, but lacks the vibe. We started with the Pate Maison, which was very disappointing, tasteless except for excessive garlic. One could do much better at almost any mid-level charcuterie in Paris. We then shared the pasta with beef cheeks which was really good. The duck and veal dishes were good but lacked vibrancy, no chi. The apple tart for 2 was a real disappointment, apples and crust seriously lacked taste intensity."

  • "great decor. Love the macaroons, esp the birthday one.Have been once for brunch and once for dinner.frittata was very tasty, my bf ordered poached eggs and had to send them back because they did not taste like egg, they were very watery with no flavor. The waitress brought a new dish, but the same thing, when we broke the yolk you could see water pour out.It was also not seasoned at all. We went back for dinner.the escarole salad was delicious, the pate was nothing special. The risotto was not special, it wasn't seasoned and the portion quite small. The seppia pasta was expensive for what it was, especially considering that the seppia were served RAW!Me and my bf are chefs and expected a lot being that carmellini's other restaurants are great."
