A word from Lafayette
Lafayette is an everyday French restaurant conducting the spirit of French dining anew in downtown Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood. Open morning, noon and night, this grand café and bakery is dedicated to Chef Andrew Carmellini's market-driven bistro cooking in a timeless hallmark setting. Our light-flushed dining room features soaring arched windows overlooking the NoHo streetscapes and a lively rotisserie bar. Our corner boulangerie-patisserie is open all hours offering artisanal breads, croissants, Stumptown coffee drinks, a light breakfast or lunch and a host of confections. In warm weather months, our sidewalk cafe opens daily for open air lunch, brunch and dinner service.

Similar to Locanda Verde, you can expect the opposite of Danny Meyer-type service. So rude. Our waiter in particular was so rude. The food was great but they are doing nothing to build local loyalty.

Despite the respected chef, this turned out to be a dud. We sent back the frisee salad because the overly salty viniagrette was inedible. Then my husband (a professional chef) asked if they could prepare a vegetarian pasta with vegetables (any kitchen should be able to do, let alone a chef's restaurant known for it's pasta). What arrived was a joke - plain pasta, a bit of olive oil, no veggies. My husband said "it looked like a kids meal" (which later when we got the check it was, in fact, listed on the bill as "kids pasta" - no joke). The poor waiter totally understand why we sent it back, but returned with same plain pasta (with a sprinkle of parsley) and a side broccoli of rabe. Really? Manager didn't even come over to apologize.

This large handsome restaurant has a great Manhattan feel. lots of diners, good food, great service. My wife and I both enjoyed excellent salads, especially my beet salad. Ravioli was properly cooked. . MW is not a pasta eater and did not find anything any of the menu entrees to her liking so she ordered a couple of side dishes. Well satisfied. We shared a tasty tart..coffee outstanding. All service employees do a terrific job in making our meal enjoyable. Not inexpensive but worth the price. We dined pre theater and wait staff was cognizant of our time constraint and delivered out plates on a timely schedule.

We dined before seeing "Here Lies Love" at the Public & could scarcely tear ourselves away. Service was impeccable, and everything we tried-- from whole wheat French bread to roasted beets to artichoke pasta---was imaginative & colorful. My dry Alsatian Riesling was a knockout, pairing perfectly with the absolutely delicious grilled local trout (not from the East River, I hope!) and superb choucroute. Skipped dessert to make curtain, but we WILL be back to this civilized, creative place.

One of my friends had highly recommended Lafayette, and at first, I thought it would just be another formulaic New York brunch spot. I arrived and was very pleasantly surprised by the sight of people eating outside on the front patio on what was a beautiful day. I walked in, and it was styled in a traditional French manner, with natural light filling the room. A very packed room that exuded charming energy. My friends and I ordered the assorted pastries to share, which were AMAZING, and I ordered the soft scramble which came with brioche with pesto. I can still taste the brioche melting in my mouth. The service was very pleasant too, not too imposing but available and friendly. I loved the vibe and can't wait to go back again for brunch.

Delicious brunch. The eggs were so fluffy and fresh. The omelette melted like buttah in our mouths. The French toast was decadent. The home fries/potatoes were amazing -- crispy, salty, flavorful and not dripping in oil. Great coffee, too. The breadbasket had a great selection as well and each was delicious. Our server was attentive without hovering. She cheerfully served us even though our baby knocked over a water glass and broke it. Not the cheapest place around but the food and service were worth the premium.

Beautiful looking self proclaimed 'hot spot' disappointed. Food was bland and served luke warm. Uninterested wait staff completed the experience. Manager/host attempt to rectify prior to leaving did produce probably the only thing there worth eating...a butter cookie. Plenty of other great places for brunch in nyc, including brazilia or five points down the street.

Dinner at Lafayette last week was not as good as previous meals. Frites are coated in salt and dishes were presented without much flair. Felt like lazy cooking. Worst of all, my much-anticipated cocktail tasted mostly of old vermouth; it was prepared and presented without joy. Service started out with enthusiasm and faltered quickly. The restaurant is so beautiful, and so well-situated--it's too bad that it is lately missing a step.

Everything started with the fact that out of the 6 people only 5 attended and then everything became chaotic and they had to ask three times under which name was reservation made under. They left the wine list and took forever 2 show up. The appetizers: another mess -they brought tuna tartare to the person that had ordered beef since allergic to fish. The entrée took over 45 minutes from the moment they took the appetizer I(of course cold) .Dessert was never asked - they brought one of each from prix fix. They never apologize for the delay. The wine they recommended was good but at a $60 per bottle; I am sure they have more moderate wines that they can recommend for lunch.

Really lovely & nice ambiance. It's a big place, yet it feels intimate. Food: fabulous. Their frisée salad - exciting (must be the bacon). The chicken tagine was juicy with very flavorful sauce, and the girandole with braised rabit - yum yet not heavy. The sommelier was very helpful with our wine decision when three of us at the table were having different food but wanted to share a bottle. Negative: service. More discreet and more efficient service without making us feel rushed is much desired. Too many people coming & asking same questions. A couple of servers asked if we were done when some food was on our plates (and flatware not together), and again over dessert while we were still having coffee. That should never happen.

The staff was kind to seat me before my guest and very friendly and accomodating with our requests on the order of service and questions on the dish preparations. The trout on a bed of cabbage does not do the title of this dish justice. This was a phenomenal dish...the trout was very salted fish thrown on the grill topping a German type concoction of sauerkraut and onion carmelized that would more traditionally be served with a bratwurst.. and.....on the top layer was a lovely frisee with scallion....these combined but individual tastes were YUMMMM! Will try more on this menu!

The ambiance of Lafayette is outstanding. Beautiful space. The food is incredible...well, almost everything. The pate was divine - while it did not come with bread, it was no problem to get it. The artichoke ravioli was one of the best I've tried and it was a very big portion. More than enough for 2 people to share. The chicken was perfectly cooked and delicious. The steak frites was the least impressive dish of the night. While the flavor was good, the steak was tough. Wasn't the best cut of meat and for the price, it should have been better. The fries were crispy and scrumptious. The dessert was also delicious. Overall, I would recommend it. This was my 2nd time there and I'd certainly go back again!

First visit since they had a chef change. Menu has changed and in my opinion for the worst. Had very good ravioli and duck Au points. Ordered west coast Kusshi oysters but only served as 6 or 12. Wanted to share 9. Not possible. For dessert had plum mandarin sorbet, peach sorbet and coffee ice cream. The ice cream was very good but the sorbets were awful. Had no flavor at all. With our dinner had a bottle of Sancerre. For me the menu only had 2-3 dishes worth trying. Appetizer offerings outside the oysters were unappealing. Really a shame as this restaurant is really lovely and service excellent. So much better with the previous chef. Do not plan to return.

An expensive French restaurant with some pretension but with good service and very good food. The duck was cooked just right. Everything we had was very good except the peach melba. That would have been better served on a dish rather than in a glass (which made it hard to eat) and a lot less whipped cream. The dessert wine was really the best I've had in this country. My friend - a 20-something - didn't know that sweet dessert wine existed until she tasted the glass I ordered for her. I could see that look in her eyes which said, 'I will have to have more of this sometime soon'! The only real drawback is the noise level. I went on a Frinight and had a lot of trouble conversing with my companion. Overall a very good experience.
