A word from Lafayette
Lafayette is an everyday French restaurant conducting the spirit of French dining anew in downtown Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood. Open morning, noon and night, this grand café and bakery is dedicated to Chef Andrew Carmellini's market-driven bistro cooking in a timeless hallmark setting. Our light-flushed dining room features soaring arched windows overlooking the NoHo streetscapes and a lively rotisserie bar. Our corner boulangerie-patisserie is open all hours offering artisanal breads, croissants, Stumptown coffee drinks, a light breakfast or lunch and a host of confections. In warm weather months, our sidewalk cafe opens daily for open air lunch, brunch and dinner service.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We enjoyed our dinner here. Service was prompt, courteous, and professional, and the broom has a nicely convivial atmosphere. The food was all good, and serving sizes are ample."

  • " While the service was impeccable, the food had a couple of hiccups. First, the petit pois omelet did not have petit pois but, rather, standard peas (which were more than a little undercooked). Second, the salad that came with the omelet looked as if it came from a bag and was somewhat aged as the cut ends of some of the greens were brown. I expected better, particularly for the price charged."

  • "A dining experience worth having. When so many restaurants fail to deliver on the hype, Lafayette exceeds the hype. Each dish is delicious. We had various small dishes followed by entrees. The sweet pea ravioli was a delicious blend and taste. The trout presented and tasted terrific. Do leave room for desserts. Also, the sommelier is helpful and makes great recommendations; does not push the high end bottles."

  • "Our meal started off nicely with the waiter having us sample the wines by the glass we selected. Unfortunately, that was the only nice experience. The food came out lukewarm, bland and poorly executed. By the first few bites, we were disappointed in all three dishes. There was no service recovery by the waiter. The manager never checked the table. It was almost as if the staff could see we were not pleased and stayed away. The abandoned plates sat for 15 mins without being cleared. No one asked how we liked the dishes. The only time the waiter appeared was to try to sell more wine or coffee. This meal was so terrible that, not only will I never eat at this restaurant again, I will never eat at any restaurant in this group ever again."

  • "Very good food and an equally nice room. Upscale without being terribly fussy. Service is rushed. Appetizers came out before our cocktails."

  • "The ambiance is nice but the food is tasteless. Have tried their brunch and dinner and both are disappointing. Overpriced for below mediocre food. Never returning."

  • "We had lunch and it was cool and relaxing. Just a great place to have a nice conversation wit a friend."

  • "Some specific comments: We really miss the lettuce dish you used to have, with pears and cheese. We loved it and used to come specially to have it. On the other hand we love the new carrot Vichyssoise. The outdoor tables are nice when it isn't too hot."

  • "Lafayette is a great restaurant. We were a party of 8, were seated right away and the service was impeccable. Highly recommend"

  • "After reading multiple positive reviews for this restaurant, I was excited to take my family for Sunday brunch. We were seated promptly, but unfortunately that was the highlight of our service at Lafayette. Our waitress, Sam, was generally unconcerned with us or our experience throughout the meal. Very disappointing for a restaurant with so much potential to offer a fine dining experience for guests. We will not be returning if her service is any indication of the standards held by Lafayette."

  • "My first meal at Lafayette was great. We were seated downstairs (away from the maddening crowds), so we could actually hear each other talk, and the food was really very good. Second visit, not so much. Our table was less than desirable, the charred octopus was like eating rubber (amateur for such a noted restaurant)and the service was absent for the most part. The roquefort beef special was done very well and the steak frites was done correctly. But overall, for the price, the service was lacking and the food was underwhelming. I haven't struck this place form my list, but it's certainly not one that I would highly recommend. Maybe a subsequent visit will renew my faith in Lafayette."

  • "I've been there twice now and both times the experience has been great. The room is very comforting and welcoming, the lighting is spot-on and the wait staff would probably look good in any kind of light. My most recent visit was for brunch. We sat outside (great people watching) and had the rose sangria (very nice) and a mint julep (truly one of the best I've ever tasted.) My dish had a fancy name but was essentially a very fancy, and totally delicious, egg sandwich on brioche with oven roasted tomatoes, cheese, and greens. We had a dessert that was a chocolate cake with a very intense orange marmalade center and, while it was good, I envied the carrot cake as it floated by, destined for another table. I'll be back soon."

  • "Lafayette promises a solid French meal with New York service, in a handsome room. Carmellini offers a vibrant menu with great seasonal choices. The kitchen's pride in its bread, patisserie, etc. is evident, and the Brooklyn arugula with strawberries and tarragon was exceptional."

  • "outstanding food and ambiance. Great place for Brunch!"

  • "Outstanding French Bistro. The food was great; waitstaff was very attentive. The wine list was well thought out and was reasonable in price. We had a wonderful time and will return."

  • "Second time having brunch. Nice and helpful waitress. Finally a restaurant with real tables and no baby size tables. Place were once done with the food you still feel welcome and not pushed out."

  • "The renovation of the old Time Cafe and new decor is beautiful. Love the food. Loved the lamb rib appetizer, which became a meal. The Barnstable oysters were clean and delicious. I always think you can judge a restaurant by their salad. American restaurants tend to douse greens in too much dressing. Lafayette, true to its French heritage, doesn't douse, it gently laces its vinaigrette. Their strawberry salad with greens was sublime. Ditto for the wine list, which has a well curated selection including a lovely white burgundy. Lafayette is my new go to restaurant, for special occasions, for nothing-in-particular occasions."

  • "This is such a charming and lovely restaurant. The food was delicious, the ambiance wonderful, and we were totally relaxed. They did not rush us at all. The desserts were so delicious, that I bought some to take home. My guests can't wait to return."

  • "I think the setting is wonderful, inside and out. We loved our starters, including oysters, octopus and heirloom carrots. I did not like my lamb, from their Corsica menu. Flavors were good, but meat was soft and kind of slimy. Service was slow, though we didn't mind as it was a beautiful night and we enjoyed sitting outside. Perhaps they are a little understaffed. It's not as great as it could be, but we will likely be back and would recommend to out-of-towners for a lovely NY dining experience."

  • "Good, but not great food made forgettable by the most rude and unprofessional staff ever assembled for one restaurant. Don't bother to ask why entrees haven't appeared 1 hr. after appetizers were cleared, you will be met with the same confrontational attitude you received when placing the order. This place can only be saved by a wholesale replacement of the staff."

  • "There were four of us dining and we all thought the food was superb. Seasonal food inventively prepared, it was delicious. Service was excellent, too. The waiter guided us on wine selection and even provided some samples to help us make our choice. There's quite a lot of seating and the tables were spread out enough that the noise level was fine. One of the best meals I've had in NYC. We will return."

  • "This was my third time at Lafayette. Always have a reservation, they're always busy. They honor the opentable times, and the food is beyond amazing. Yup, I used amazing three times."

  • "We ate here for the first time on Saturday - a treat after mother/daughter shopping trip. We were thoroughly impressed. Service on the terrace was efficient and friendly (I wish I knew the name of the nice guy who gave me great wine recommendations - he deserves a shout-out.) We ordered 3 appetizers and the standout was the octopus. We also thoroughly enjoyed the beef tartare - perfectly seasoned with a delicious dressing and light salad. Sugar snap peas with salsa verde and ricotta also good. Corsican breast of lamb entree (with olives) from the June menu: the reduction was outstanding, hint of orange. Rather rich; beware! House-baked sourdough fabulous - we sadly forgot to buy some from the bakery before leaving, so must return!"

  • "I really did not expect this from Andrew Carmellini. The Dutch is one of my favorites restaurants in the city, and Lafayette was a let down. The service was extremely slow and pretentious. It took over 3 hours to get through dinner and the place wasn't very busy. It's hard even to rate the food because a dish came once an hour. We did not get bread, which made us extra hungry in between. One of the people in our party had a pine nut allergy, and the server claimed the dish did not have any, after I forced him to double check, he confirmed that it did. Overall, it was pretty much a disaster, especially for the price point. Unfortunately I will not go back and would not recommend Lafayette to my friends."

  • "Lovely french bistro vibe in Noho near The Public Theater. Wonderful service, comfortable oval, leather booths. Delicious greens and vegetables from Brooklyn Grange gardens. Oysters were fresh and spot on. We both ordered steak frites. Expensive for a reliable bistro staple but the french fries didn't disappoint. We didn't have room for dessert. Sorry about that. A perfect spot for romance, special friends. I would sit inside. Why be on the sidewalk when you can enjoy the ambiance of the dining room?"

  • "Truly is one of our NYC favorites however service at our most recent visit wasn't as stellar as we know it can be."

  • "Great neighborhood place! While the food was very good, the bread was outstanding! A little touch of Paris in Noho."

  • "Wonderful place, great service. I loved the pastry and bread. One outstanding dish that I will order again is the roasted beet root. Very delicious, simply but delicious. I will be back again to try the rest of the menu."

  • "Service was so-so on a relatively quiet Sunday night. I don't like to ever have to ask for anything twice. One of the entrees should have been sent back. The breast of lamb was very fatty and gamy. I wound up eating most of my daughter's order and our chicken for two (which was good as usual) became chicken for three."

  • "Excellent, tasty food, beautifully presented. A definite asset to the neighborhood. Pretty inside restaurant and lovely outdoor cafe."

  • "Service was great until our pancakes showed up very late, late by any standard but especially late considering how quickly our other dishes came out. But without any complaint on our part the pancakes were comp'd."

  • "Had a terrific dinner this past Saturday night. For starters we had grilled asparagus and carrot vichyssoise. Both superb. For the main courses a great spring pea ravioli and skate. We shared the caramel popcorn bombe for dessert. This is a very lovely restaurant with very comfortable seating. Really worth a visit In conclusion we shared a bottle of oremier Cru Chablis at a very modest price for such a lovely wine."

  • "The outdoor tables are wonderful. The food is very tasty but a tad overpriced."
    Dined on 6/14/2014
  • "The service was prompt and the waiter very professional and efficient. Although the omelette was tasty and the restaurant did not skimp on fillings, the prices were higher than warranted. The side dish (salad) was essentially just "greens" (mixed leaves), which I do not consider to be a "real" salad. This restaurant charges for refills."

  • "Come here all the time and never disappoints with the food. Great place for lunch but service can be a little slow. When I have the time for a leisurely French-style afternoon this is great but NYC can't always handle that."

  • "We are fortunate to live less than a block from this neighborhood gem. Varied and delicious lunch menu. Half of the four of us had salade niçoise, which was a lovely large salad with lots of fresh perfectly cooked tuna. The other half of us had the frisee salad which had the most delicious crunchy lardon scattered about. All were accompanied by lovely wine and beer. Servers were pleasant, and efficient. A very pleasing experience overall. "
