A word from L'Abattoir Restaurant
L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium.
Chef Lee Cooper and General Manager Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Sommelier Robert Herman's eclectic wine program and Head Barman Shaun Layton's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

The food is consistently excellent:fresh, unique, and delicious. However the tables are too small and all the food ,wine does not fit on them, they are too confining and too close together.I realize this is so you can increAse your table turnover but we almost didn't come because of this as we wanted a somewhat romantic evening. We also ordered each course separately because the food can come out too fast,we like to linger and enjoy such good food which means we drink more and so you make more profit on us .....food for thought!

Thoroughly enjoyed every dish. The crab starter, the steelhead starter, the Steak Diane, the ling cod. Tasty, tender, delicious, creative, beautifully presented. I could eat my steak with a spoon as it was so tender. The only thing stopping us from dining there more often is the location. Yes, Gastown is now hip, but it is an uncomfortable walk two or three blocks to where we found a parking space.

I'm a professional chef. I've traveled pretty extensively in Europe, Asia and the Americas over the past 40 years. Restaurants that get the service, food and bar equation correct are pretty rare, and it's no accident. It takes a lot of hard work and talent. L'Abattoir is one of them.

Tried this based on reviews. Parked on Cordova, and at first was leery of neighbourhood, but restaurant backs onto charming brick Gastown courtyard. Had table in back corner on beautiful summer eve, quiet and full of light from atrium-like back room. Bar has an impressive selection of hard-to-find spirits and liquors and makes some interesting and innovative cocktails. Staff was knowledgeable and skilled, great recommendations. Had the Steak Diane, which was an updated and fresh take from what I was expecting, and was absolutely delicious. BBQ octopus appetizer was a taste explosion of smokey-spicy-sweet-savoury, and the octopus chunks were tender and fresh, not rubbery. Partner had the duck, and raved after nearly every bite.

I've had several friends tell me how good L'Abattoir is, so for my bday dinner my husband suggested we try it out. I'm not usually one for "fine-dining" but the nice thing about this restaurant is that it is fine-dining, less the pompous attitude. The atmosphere is casual, the staff are happy and relaxed and the food is truly amazing. Wish I had the kind of paycheque that supported eating there more often, (we spent $160+ for two meals and cheapest bottle of wine) but it is definitely worth it.

Everything about the restaurant is fantastic. The food is delectable and a main reason why I will return, the atmosphere is simple and romantic, and the service is the best I have ever had. I have never been to a restaurant where a gentleman, or in my case lady, stands near the tables and just waits for us to call upon them if we need something. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a great experience.

I visited this fine establishment for my birthday with my parents. The service was extremely quick and constantly attentive, a refreshing change from many restaurants where you can wait as long for your bill as it took you to order and get your food. The food was absolutely delicious, my steak diane in particular was buttery smooth and texture and extremely flavourful. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Gastown or for a special occasion because the food will definitely leave a memory.

My husband and I came here to celebrate an anniversary after receiving a gift card... I can't believe we've never experienced this place before! The service was impeccable. We felt like the only people in a busy restaurant. And then the food came... oh wow. It was absolutely delicious. We ordered 2 appies and 2 mains expecting that the portions would be smallish. However the portions were so filling. You definitely don't need that much between 2 people. We ate it all anyway as it was so good and stumbled out of there stuffed and delighted (Ps. the cocktails are generous with the booze.) What a terrific night!

The food was really the reason I came here and it measured up. It's in Gas town which is trendy but also full of pan handlers and homeless folks. So be mindful. Certainly fine when it's light out. We walked so I'm not really sure about parking. There wasn't a valet. Seats a little uncomfortable. OK back to the food it was well put together with lots of flavor and texture. And unlike a lot of trendy restaurants the portions were good size. We loved all of our dishes. Go for the Tartine of Dungeness crab but the sweet breads were really good too. Actually eat whatever you order is going to be good. Cocktails good as well.

We booked a table of 4. Servers are not friendly at all. They did not give us the bread basket. All other tables around us have them but us. The noise level is unbearable. 4 of us sitting at a small table but can't even hear one another. My ears are ringing and throat is sore by talking so loud. The service is extra slow. When we asked for more toast to finish off the foire gras, we waited for good 30 min. Oh, I will never go there again, even someone pay me! Having said that, the food is excellent.

Three of us visited L'Abbatoir on a Thursday evening. Great attentive staff, providing an explanation of food, ingredients and cooking method. We sat in the back dining room. Good atmosphere, although a little close to our neighbours. Great wine list and availability of liqueurs (off menu options). My companions were really pleased with the Steak Diane and Pork Belly. Personally, I found my duck to be a little dry (unusual given the high fat content found in duck). In all, it was a great meal with lovely presentation.

I recently went to L'Abbatoir for the first time. The menu was diverse, but one page and very limited in terms of appetizers. The food was great. Ambience is nice, but the tables are positioned far too close together - would not recommend for a date / romantic setting. I am glad that I tried L'Abbatoir, but for the price point of food & beverage, I expect excellence and would not return given it was a mediocre experience.

We had dinner at L'Abattoir during our stay in Vancouver. Our starters were very good (steal head trout and potato salad, and BBQ octopus), the bread basket was delicious with housemade bacon brioche, but our mains were disappointing. My pork belly was perfectly cooked but unpleasant tasting with ill-matched salsa verde and baby turnips. My husband had steak Diane which was fine, but served on a cold plate so everything chilled quickly. My cocktail was very poor - just tasted like a glass of juice. Service was slow and unhelpful. We asked for recommendation for wine, and instead they just brought a bottle to the table and shrugged as they handed it over. Lovely location, but food and service need improvement.

A Gastown gem with a stylish interior, impeccable service with staff who are both enthusiastic and knowledgeable, creative cocktails and, of course, delicious food. A fantastic meal with lovely table neighbours and impeccable service. As a former wait staffer I am so picky about service and it really clouds my experience but at L'Abattoir I just had a fantastic time. So much respect to the beautiful presentation and the lovely ambiance... only drawback was the temperature. It was a rare hot HOT hot Vancouver night and we felt it on the second floor. But the pacing of the meal ensure that we didn't get overheated or overwhelmed. Well done!

I enjoyed my meal at L'Abbatoir: the potato/herb tortellini were appropriately al dente and paired with zucchini prepared two ways; the halibut was perfectly cooked and accompanied by very good thick-cut fries. But the noise level at this hip, happening spot was just too high; my husband and I were totally unable to converse. I'd recommend it only for those who can tolerate a lot of noise with their dinner.

The restaurant had a very interesting cocktail selection which allowed us to try some very good but different drinks. When we arrived at 8:30 it was still a VERY happening and very loud bar scene with food being delivered. Every plate I saw come out of the kitchen looked amazing. Turned out to taste as good as it looked. I expected to pay more just based on the looks but was happy to see a check under $150 for 2 dinners 3 drinks and a dessert. We were seated upstairs which appears to be the loudest of the areas.
