A word from L'Abattoir Restaurant
L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium.
Chef Lee Cooper and General Manager Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Sommelier Robert Herman's eclectic wine program and Head Barman Shaun Layton's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

The food was spectacular (Steak Danielle and Veal Loin, starters: BBQ Octopus and Sweetbreads) and the service outstanding! The wait staff was very attentive without being bothersome or overbearing while being always supported, i.e: our wine glasses were always topped up and so was the water; new cutlery, etc... L'Abattoir fulfilled my Open Table request for a birthday desert, with candle, for my boyfriend's birthday without me having to remind them: attentive to details which is very nice! Great French press coffee. Reservation is recommended as crowds were still pouring in at 10pm. Go! Go! Go!

You can tell that the staff really work as a team. Our water & wine was always full; the staff was very polite, friendly & knowledgeable. Only hitch for the evening was 1 of our appetizers was incorrect & there was a billing error. However, the food was amazing & portion sizes were great. You will find dishes here that you wouldn't make for yourself on a regular day at home (snails, duck, octopus, foie gras, etc. - all delicious!). One of the highlights of L'Abattoir is their cocktail list. Everything has a unique taste and is very out-of-the-box and original. They do take a couple extra minutes to prepare because of complexity but definitely worth it. Have been a couple times before with no issues and will definitely be going back!

The food was superb, and although the range was fairly limited, you would be very satisfied with the option you did choose. Most appetisers were seafood based which eliminated many options for my wife who has an allergy. The main dishes were regular dishes, done extremely well - a steak, a chicken, a veal a fish etc, but executed very very well. The service was some of the best i have received. personal, attentive, but not in your face, and also knowlegeable and friendly!

We had a wonderful experience at L'Abattoir. The presentation of each dish was delicate yet hearty and each mouthful was exquisite. It was perfect for a special occasion. The wine we had to accompany our meaty main was a beautiful red named Blue Mountain, not extravagantly pricey but just as delicious as our meals. The service was efficient and friendly, the ambiance was calm and romantic. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and although it was a bustling Saturday evening we didn't feel rushed in any way.

Was really noisy tonight seated upstairs which was great as downstairs is cold & sterile not intimate at all, this used to be our favourite place as we dine out often, but please change the menu more frequently not just odd dishes,as now it feels like they are in it to turn tables not to give us a a great experience , their food is creative & tastes great though , service was really attentive but slow it seemed like not enough servers on & the guy on the door seems like owner/ manager could smile at least once & seem like he's happy to be there

Thoughtful and well prepared food. The menu provides a nicely rounded selection of dishes many of which seem to feature regional ingredients. The portions are good and the presentation is nicely crafted. The combination of flavours and ingredients reflects a 'craftmanship' that clearly says that L'Abbattoir's success has not come at the expense of quality. The pork belly first course is excellent, so is the duck second. The fish dishes are also quite good. Very nice service -- attentive, friendly, professional, but not hovering. Bar is small but good fun. But perhaps a few BC red wines on the 'by the glass' list? Wine list overall is notable and the selection is well chosen; indeed there are some reasonalby priced gems.

L'Abbatoir is delicious without being pretentious. Interesting cocktails, and small twists on the everyday, such as a bread basket with bacon brioche and anchovy twists. They do an exceptional job of sweetbreads and steak and desserts are rich and delicious. The only thing I would have changed is the pumpkin seeds in dessert - shelled would have been easier to chew. :)

My wife and I showed up a few minutes early for our Rez, but were greeted immediately, and directed to the bar. Our table was ready within 5 minutes. The vibe was casual but classy, very hip. The drink menu was very innovative and what we ordered was great. We quickly got our table. Service was prompt, attentive, informed, and genuine. Our dishes were outstanding; Baked oysters to start, Steak Diane and Lingcod for main courses. Nice sized portions, large enough to be filling but not giant. Great presentation. We will return on our next trip to Vancouver.

Based on good reviews, I was excited to try l'Abbatoir so I made a reservation. When I arrived, I was disappointed to hear that I would have to wait at least 15-20 mins. to be seated so I left with my partner to take a stroll around Gastown. Our seats still weren't ready when we returned to the restaurant though the hostess likely picked up on my growing aggravation as she offered us a glass of champagne while we continued to wait. I'm grateful that the restaurant offered this gesture because the main courses were absolutely fantastic and I would like to go back. Without the gesture to make our wait more agreeable, I most certainly wouldn't have returned. The dessert was just ok. But the mains were exceptional.

Friendly, attentive service without hovering. Was offered reading material as a solo diner. The complimentary bread basket was great - my favourite was the anchovy twist, followed by the sesame flatbread. My starter was the poached steelhead with crunchy potato salad - very tasty with a good amount of greens; potatoes were a delicious compliment to the trout. Of the main, the veal was underdone (very rare, medium-rare would have been preferable) and wasn't particularly tender. However, I would have happily eaten an entire meal of sweetbreads. I finished those but left most of the veal. A shame really, since it was a lovely cut still on the bone. Overall, it was a nice experience but I left feeling not quite satisfied.

It was a great dinner. We were late due to the horrible traffic that evening so it was a rush dinner and we didnt get a chance to try the dinner. My favourite of that night was steak diane with marrow butter - it was fabulous. The noise level though, I could not really chat with my friend and quite honestly could hear all the conversations of the person at the next table. Nonetheless, the ambience is nice in its own way. I enjoyed it overall.

Food well above average. BBQ Octopus unnecessarily tough, but Butternut Squash Tortellini, Steak Diane, and Wild Sockeye Salmon very good. Had a fine BC white wine. Alas, this is one of those places where, as staff circulate among the tables, they continually top off your wine, even if it takes only a few milliliters. This may be to give the impression of solicitous service (and it may marginally sell more wine), but for me it is one of the most irritating things that a restaurant can encourage and that its servers can do. Wine should be poured, not dribbled out as though from an incontinent bladder. I'll ask them to pour or I'll pour it myself. Otherwise, Hands Off My Wine Bottle!

Although I found my overall dining experience exceptional, my vegetarian girlfriend bit into a piece of bread delivered at the start of service only to discover there was anchovies in it. As the bread basket was delivered complimentary and with a variety of bread, the server should have explained the different types of bread just in case there was a dietary issue (which there was).

We had high expectations and, in general, they were met. My wife had the tomatoes with fresh cheese and the butternut squash tortellini. She said both were excellent, the salad tomato salad the best ever. Octopus was good but not unusual. I had the Steak Diane, but it was a total disappointment. It is said to be the restaurant's signature dish, but it did not resemble any Diane preparation I have ever had. It was essentially a thick (but very tender) piece of steak with a peppercorn sauce. The cocktails were the priciest and the smallest I have ever had in North America. They were good, but an extremely poor value. In general the restaurant was very enjoyable, but avoid the Steak Diane and stick to wine.

We had the best time here on Wednesday night. It was lively, the service was impeccable, and the food was some of the best we've had in a while. That's saying a lot considering we're in vancouver, where the bar is quite high. We had the oysters, crab, special pork, and salmon small plates. Plenty of food, all amazing...we pushed on to share a chocolate dessert, which was nice. We will definitely be back to try the other half of the menu!

Started with a cocktail in the cozy bar right in the front of the room, looking out through the tall glass windows at the bustling corner of Carrall St. Upstairs is a lively dining area, lit not too dark, mood set just right, and decorated very insightfully. Exactly what you'd want a Gastown evening to look like. The BBQ Ocotopus was charred and had the most satisfying texture. A must try. For our mains we had the duck and the scallops. The sauces complimented the dishes so well, and both dishes were cooked to the ideal 'doneness'. Duck and Scallops are over/under done so often we forget what perfection is. L'Abbatoir nailed it! I'm a big hungry guy and did not leave hungry. We talked about our meal for days afterwards. We'll be back!
