A word from L'Abattoir Restaurant
L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium.
Chef Lee Cooper and General Manager Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Sommelier Robert Herman's eclectic wine program and Head Barman Shaun Layton's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

This place is amazing! It never fails. Time and time again I have the best experience here. The staff and service is some of the best I've ever experienced. Authentic, genuine, well versed, experienced. I could go on forever. Front to back this place is bar none. The food and drink are obviously impeccable as well. I truly can't say enough. Thank you!

I was looking for a good Gastown lunch spot to take a friend. I don't eat meat but loved their gnocchi dish. I'm still thinking about it! The food and service were great. We were seated in the back room (former Irish Heather space) and it was so bright and lovely. What a treat!

This was the most spectacularly delicious meal we've had in a while, possibly not since returning from Quebec. The steelhead was of particular note, and the duck was cooked to perfection and very balanced in its flavours. Loved the ambiance of the room although it was quite draughty which seemed to cool down our food quickly as well. We loved the intense flavours and attention to detail without the food being stuffy or pompous. Also very much enjoyed the excellent wine selection.

  • A Symphony On A Plate

    Dined on 11/15/2014
A Symphony? Maybe pushing that a little, BUT that was my lady's response to our dinner Saturday night wherein each 'item' on the plate had something special about it. Perhaps that should be the expectation of a 'high-end' restaurant like L'Abattoir, but that being the case, we were still very impressed.

Interesting range of cold and hot starters - something for everyone! Tuna sashimi was delicious with an interesting use of pink grapefruit. Sweetbreads were well cooked although slightly overshadowed by the sauce cribishe. The scallops and chicken wings were perfectly cooked and the combination of flavours worked well.

Loved being so we'll taken care of. Multiple staff visiting our table, water and drinks stayed topped up all night. Wine pair suggestion was so delicious and a respectful price point. Food was so much fun, so beautiful and equally delicious. Except the "Pumpkin Pie". It's not pumpkin pie, don't call it that. LOL

Wishful thinking, tried to call in advance to request special order pork belly as it was both my girlfriend and my milestone birthdays , cannot special request in advance, ordered pork shoulder on the dry side. Kind of disappointed but overall still good ... didn't even bother to ask kitchen or management if there was any remote possibility or even call me back, just flat out said no. Only will be back for pork belly dinner. Everything is good though. Thank you.

Good atmosphere and casual dining place but most of all are over priced. Foie gras was not so good and I did not like the way they serve with toast under foie gras, octopus was not flavorous, escargot was hard to find in the plate. But tongue dish was very good.

Pleasant, unpretetious modern setting, superb food, the best we have had in Vancouver in a long time. We have just been travelling and eating well in France this Fall where we enjoyed unpretentious traditional food best. This meal was more creative and finessed than we experienced there. Very impressive and good value even though we paid more than we usually do for a restaurant meal. Service was excellent. Great to experience fine food not overwhelmed by hype.

This is one of our favourite restaurants. I have the octopus cold dish every time and it did not disappoint. The baked oysters were good but left me slightly underwhelmed. I had the rib eye (which seems to have replaced the steak Dianne). The meat was cooked to perfection and the butter was top notch. My wife had the scallops and chicken wings. It sounded like an odd combo but it definitely worked. The scallops were so incredibly light and flavourful. But as always, the stars of the show were the outstanding cocktails. I enjoyed a Meat Hook and a 4th Regiment. I could drink 10 Meat Hooks, if only I could.

Imaginative menu and very well prepared food. Excellent cocktails. Fish is perfectly done here, so are the duck and beef. But.... the wine list is overpriced. Go for wine by the glass... if you make do with only one. But... you may bring your own for a $30 corkage fee.

The food was spectacular (Steak Danielle and Veal Loin, starters: BBQ Octopus and Sweetbreads) and the service outstanding! The wait staff was very attentive without being bothersome or overbearing while being always supported, i.e: our wine glasses were always topped up and so was the water; new cutlery, etc... L'Abattoir fulfilled my Open Table request for a birthday desert, with candle, for my boyfriend's birthday without me having to remind them: attentive to details which is very nice! Great French press coffee. Reservation is recommended as crowds were still pouring in at 10pm. Go! Go! Go!

You can tell that the staff really work as a team. Our water & wine was always full; the staff was very polite, friendly & knowledgeable. Only hitch for the evening was 1 of our appetizers was incorrect & there was a billing error. However, the food was amazing & portion sizes were great. You will find dishes here that you wouldn't make for yourself on a regular day at home (snails, duck, octopus, foie gras, etc. - all delicious!). One of the highlights of L'Abattoir is their cocktail list. Everything has a unique taste and is very out-of-the-box and original. They do take a couple extra minutes to prepare because of complexity but definitely worth it. Have been a couple times before with no issues and will definitely be going back!

The food was superb, and although the range was fairly limited, you would be very satisfied with the option you did choose. Most appetisers were seafood based which eliminated many options for my wife who has an allergy. The main dishes were regular dishes, done extremely well - a steak, a chicken, a veal a fish etc, but executed very very well. The service was some of the best i have received. personal, attentive, but not in your face, and also knowlegeable and friendly!

We had a wonderful experience at L'Abattoir. The presentation of each dish was delicate yet hearty and each mouthful was exquisite. It was perfect for a special occasion. The wine we had to accompany our meaty main was a beautiful red named Blue Mountain, not extravagantly pricey but just as delicious as our meals. The service was efficient and friendly, the ambiance was calm and romantic. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening and although it was a bustling Saturday evening we didn't feel rushed in any way.
