A word from L'Abattoir Restaurant
L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium.
Chef Lee Cooper and General Manager Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Sommelier Robert Herman's eclectic wine program and Head Barman Shaun Layton's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

We arrived at our anniversary dinner a bit early and were seated immediately. Champagne arrived as a congratulations before even ordering drinks. The service was superb and attentive throughout the evening. The food was simply outstanding and memorable. The dinner bread was unusual and so tasty! A wonderful night and meal!

It was a great dinner. We were late due to the horrible traffic that evening so it was a rush dinner and we didnt get a chance to try the dinner. My favourite of that night was steak diane with marrow butter - it was fabulous. The noise level though, I could not really chat with my friend and quite honestly could hear all the conversations of the person at the next table. Nonetheless, the ambience is nice in its own way. I enjoyed it overall.

Food well above average. BBQ Octopus unnecessarily tough, but Butternut Squash Tortellini, Steak Diane, and Wild Sockeye Salmon very good. Had a fine BC white wine. Alas, this is one of those places where, as staff circulate among the tables, they continually top off your wine, even if it takes only a few milliliters. This may be to give the impression of solicitous service (and it may marginally sell more wine), but for me it is one of the most irritating things that a restaurant can encourage and that its servers can do. Wine should be poured, not dribbled out as though from an incontinent bladder. I'll ask them to pour or I'll pour it myself. Otherwise, Hands Off My Wine Bottle!

  • Must Explain Bread Types in Basket

Although I found my overall dining experience exceptional, my vegetarian girlfriend bit into a piece of bread delivered at the start of service only to discover there was anchovies in it. As the bread basket was delivered complimentary and with a variety of bread, the server should have explained the different types of bread just in case there was a dietary issue (which there was).

Everything was absolutely perfect- service, food, drinks, and atmosphere. We were greeted with a friendly front house staff and delicious cocktails. Homemade breads are to die for! Attentive, professional, and smiley waiters. Baked Oysters, Steak Diane, and Duck are what we had which were all cooked to perfection. It is by far the best restaurant in Vancouver!

We had high expectations and, in general, they were met. My wife had the tomatoes with fresh cheese and the butternut squash tortellini. She said both were excellent, the salad tomato salad the best ever. Octopus was good but not unusual. I had the Steak Diane, but it was a total disappointment. It is said to be the restaurant's signature dish, but it did not resemble any Diane preparation I have ever had. It was essentially a thick (but very tender) piece of steak with a peppercorn sauce. The cocktails were the priciest and the smallest I have ever had in North America. They were good, but an extremely poor value. In general the restaurant was very enjoyable, but avoid the Steak Diane and stick to wine.

We had the best time here on Wednesday night. It was lively, the service was impeccable, and the food was some of the best we've had in a while. That's saying a lot considering we're in vancouver, where the bar is quite high. We had the oysters, crab, special pork, and salmon small plates. Plenty of food, all amazing...we pushed on to share a chocolate dessert, which was nice. We will definitely be back to try the other half of the menu!

Started with a cocktail in the cozy bar right in the front of the room, looking out through the tall glass windows at the bustling corner of Carrall St. Upstairs is a lively dining area, lit not too dark, mood set just right, and decorated very insightfully. Exactly what you'd want a Gastown evening to look like. The BBQ Ocotopus was charred and had the most satisfying texture. A must try. For our mains we had the duck and the scallops. The sauces complimented the dishes so well, and both dishes were cooked to the ideal 'doneness'. Duck and Scallops are over/under done so often we forget what perfection is. L'Abbatoir nailed it! I'm a big hungry guy and did not leave hungry. We talked about our meal for days afterwards. We'll be back!

Fabulous food, lively atmosphere and outstanding service. We enjoyed all our dishes; oysters, halibut and scallops. Our waiter was attentive, smooth & did not hover. The meal moved along at a perfect pace we weren't rushed nor were we waiting for extended periods. A real treat! The restaurant was full creating an very energetic vibe. I wouldn't recommend it for a romantic evening because of the noise level. I would highly recommend this restaurant and will be returning.

Booked table to celebrate our wedding anniversary while in Vancouver. Although the name, L'Abattoir, didn't shout romance the restaurant fitted the bill perfectly. Great buzz. Delicious breads, imaginative cocktails and beautifully executed and presented dishes. I ate the octopus and halibut and my wife also had seafood, all perfect. The couple on the next table we're equally impressed by their meat dishes. We shared a wonderful panna cotta to finish the meal. The only problem is L'Abattoir is too far (10hr flight) from home for it to become a regular spot!

Super chic looking place with an amazing ambiance. When we were first seated, I was concerned how close we were to the people on either side of us, but the overall nose level of others enjoying their company and meal allowed us to still have a private enough conversation. The food was unique and delicious and not really inflated in price considering. We each had an entree and drink and shared a dessert for under $100. Reservations are a must, as a couple came in behind us and were told that the only seating left for the night was at 10:30pm. Probably my second favourite dining out experience ever.

The bottle of wine was very good. Although the octopus appetizer was flavourable, the textures of the octopus varied from mushy to rubbery. When our waitress asked us how we liked it, we told her that we found the octopus rubbery/mushy. She responded that she cooked octopus at home and that was simply the texture of octopus. We have eaten octopus many time before and never came across such a rubbery/mushy texture. The main course was salmon was very good, but the steak Diane was disappointing. Although I had asked that it be medium, when it came it was medium rare bordering on rare. When we were asked how everything was, we replied "good". I ate most of the steak, because by that time, we had made up our minds not to come back.

We decided to come here for our anniversary, as we were planning on doing a few things around gastown. Having been a frequent visitor to the old Irish Heather, I was very familiar with this place from the moment I walked in. Although the layout is very similar, they have done a fantastic job in fixing the place up. The food was fantastic, and very affordably priced. I had a tomato salad, followed by the Duck and it was outstanding. I t was on the small side, but for the price it was very good value. The cocktails are fantastic!!

My girlfriend and I had a wonderful meal recently at this eclectic Gastown bistro. Seated in the Atrium in the back, it felt as if we were along a Paris alleyway. We shared two appetizers and an entree , and each was both artfully presented and excellently prepared. A perfect manhattan, good wine list and knowledgable waitstaff completed an excellent dining experience. Definitely as good as the better known French restaurants in the city, and mich less pricy.

Heard good things about this restaurant and decided to go for early dinner. I was expecting something more for moderately priced french restaurant. As expected the portions were small and my duck was slightly warm and undercooked. Service was good and noise level was moderate except for the small child across the room that was acting out. Not the restaurants fault.
