A word from La Urbana
The symbol of the neighborhood Cantina is an integral part of Latin American culture. Cantinas have been cherished by local communities for generations, providing a neutral space where all people can enjoy outstanding food and signature cocktails with their families and friends.

At La Urbana, we hope to respectfully reinterpret this time-honored tradition by using sustainable ingredients in a contemporary way that represents our Latin roots and global culture while continuing to push the boundaries of modern Mexican food.

¡Salud!

Diner Reviews
  • "The experience was beyond expectations. The eating implements provided were detailed, the presentations were thoughtful and well executed (the mole was poured from a pitcher by the server), the posole, farro and green peas were tasteful and emphasized the textures well, the eggplant entree was new and the churros were memorable. To be expected the dining room was full of 30-somethings shouting as their ordinary table conversation."

  • "We went from brunch and the food was good but definitely overpriced. I liked the vibe and ambiance but wouldn't go back, don't think its worth the price."

  • "My wife and I dined at La Urbana on Thursday night and enjoyed it very much. The plancha de avocado was excellent and we loved it; our entrées (the Mexican squash and the steak) were good, but not spectacular. We had churros for dessert and, although they were very tasty, I don't think they come anywhere close Rosa Mexicano's. Probably the two best things La Urbana has to offer are the ambience (which was great) and the mexcal menu. They have a lot of options and they all look great. Their cocktails are also very nice. So if you're up to a fun dinner with a great atmosphere, great drinks and nice food, make sure you try La Urbana."

  • "over-hyped and overpriced. very small portions for the prices. my short ribs were good, not great, and definitely a small portion (1 piece); my husband's fish was overcooked and bland. our waitress was extremely pushy especially when it came to cocktails, drinks. kept trying to get us to go for their "flights" and we had to finally say can we have some time to think about what we want. she also was trying too hard to be friendly and it felt very artificial. the staff bringing us food were much more pleasant than our actual waitress who took our orders."

  • "We shared the octopus, ceviche, chicken, and corn. All were very good. We also had three cocktails between us, each of which was excellent. Seriously, the bartender here is a wizard."

  • "The options for vegetarians are very limited. There was only one vegeterian entree on the menu. The ambiance is energetic but loud -"

  • "Starters were enjoyed the most. Not an ample menu. Expensive."

  • "Arrived before the dining room opened so started with Happy Hour in the "garage". Popcorn was super, we kept loading up. Cocktails were yum and the ceviche was the best. Dinner items were a little disappointing. The octopus was good but not great. "Tamale" on the vegetarian dish was way too firm. Vegetables so-so, not much flavor. Short ribs was also good but not great. We had to ask for salsas and received very small cups of a habanero and tomatillo salsa. Both were good and helped flavor the short ribs. Our waiter was very good and made some good mescal suggestions. Next time will stick yo Happy Hour and order some tacos."

  • "The food at La Urbana is exceptional. Some restaurants pretend to feature top shelf Mexican dining, but this restaurant pulls it off beautifully. The flavors and presentation are excellent. The portions are artfully presented, and sized in moderation, so you can enjoy all the courses. Their selection of Mezcal is surprisingly large, too. Service? A little cranky. Prices? Expensive. The atmosphere is busy, loud, neighborhood San Francisco bar, but the food prices are what you would expect at a much fancier place. I took business guests here who are Chinese and were interested in trying Mexican food in California. It was the perfect experience for them, and work picked up the rather shocking tab for three people. All good!"

  • "Hostess was lovely and welcoming. Server courteous but slow. Food was very good, but not exceptional enough by San Francisco standards, to merit the price. Ambiance fun and lively but very loud."

  • "Appetizers and cocktails were delicious. Entrees were just good. Cocktails were great. But way overpriced. I don't think we'd go back unless friends convinced us."

  • "The food and service was really great, but the noise level is something they have to address, you can't speak or hear what the person next to you."

  • "I really like the location and ambience of this restaurant but I didn't love the food. The food didn't really match up to the price. Beautifully presented but missed the mark on being truly high end cuisine. This restaurant is new so I'm hoping they improve."

  • "Food was good, especially the smoked steak and homemade salsas. Octopus was fishy and awful. Beer was nice and cold. Dessert tasted like a 50/50 bar in the best way. Our server was amazingly sweet and helpful and we thought the hostess was cool and accommodating. I wouldn't go back because the look of the place, the clientele and the wretched music were all so middle-of-the-road/middle america. This place was full of rich-looking people who thought they were slumming it by eating in an "interesting" neighborhood, then off to bed by 10. That music -- oh my god -- it was like generic "techno-bistro" sound stylings -- so retail and 90s. Why go back?"

  • "overpriced for what you get...small drinks w/too much ice and small pours."

  • "The Octopus alone is worth coming here. Short ribs and scallops were also delicious but tgere could have been more scallops on the plate. Get a side of the roasted corn as it is not only incredibly tasty but a hearty helping. The only down side- be prepared to wait for your entree."

  • "Table for 4 arrived at 11:15. Around 11:30 we ordered our food. 30 minutes go by & still no entrees came out. We asked the waitress what was going on. Another 30 minutes went by & she seemed to be avoiding us. We finally grabbed her attention after multiple tables had eaten & paid their checks. We asked her what was going on & she said that the kitchen staff wasn't listening to her. What does that have to do with our food? After over 2 hours my friend grabbed the manager, told her what happened & that we were leaving. She said the waitress didn't fire our food for some reason. After almost 2.5 hours we left. Horrible customer service, no communication & the worst part, they still made us pay for our drinks! $62 we spent on cocktails!"

  • "Definitely solid and legit, although not as vibrant by way of ambience as I expected. But what lacked in excitement the great service made up for. Made for a relaxing, enjoyable delish meal experience."

  • "While the food was pretty tasty, our entrees would have been much better had they been served hot from the kitchen, instead of barely lukewarm. But, after waiting a fairly LONG time between first course and our mains, we were not inclined to send them back and wait even longer."
    Dined on 5/3/2014
  • "Took forever, they messed up one of our orders and it too the entire meal for them to get it out. They weren't very apologetic about it either. Doesn't matter how good the food is if the service is awful."

  • "The food was good, though my main course was too much Mole not enough fish. My partner's meat too seemed overwhelmed by other flavors. The Tequila flight was a nice way to start, the salad was amazing, the rest of the meal less so. Service was not wonderful, not bad but I think the large table near ours got the kitchen's attention while we waited quite a while for our dishes. Dessert was also ok, perhaps I was just burned out from the ocean of mole sauce on my fish."

  • "I've eaten lots of Mexican food but nothing like this. Most dishes were great but the pork Carnitas starter was particularly good. They have a huge Mezcal list and if you are a fan this is replace for you. Excellent and attentive service. "

  • "A modern take on the mexican classics. Presentation was done very well, dishes were very creative, taste was out of this world. Who would have expected Halibut, Eggplant and Mole? This dish was absolutely amazing though- and the Mole was to die for!"

  • "La Urbana is a fun neighborhood spot for drinks, but I won't be going there again for dinner. We made a reservation on a Wednesday night and still had to wait at least 20 minutes for our table. After we ordered, it took 45 minutes for our entrees to be ready, which seemed very long for a restaurant that was nowhere near full. Plates are priced $20-30 each, and the prices do not match what you get. As far as food, the Mexican hole in the wall down the street tastes better and a third of the price. Overall, the wine list and cocktails are fantastic, bartenders and servers very friendly, but food is too expensive, super slow, not that good, and really small. The menu has a lot of twists on traditional Mexican food, but they don't really work. "

  • "My overall impression of la urbana, was good not great. Also, I felt as though we paid way to much for what we got. My husband and I went with another couple, paid over $90 per person (only one drink per person) and left hungry. The service was average to below average, we asked our waiter for recommendations since we had never been to the restaurant before, and he shrugged his shoulders and said "everything is good". Then we asked how many dishes we should get if we want to share stuff, and he said "I don't know, how hungry are you" and walked away. I don't know that I would recommend this restaurant to a friend or go back myself, was pretty disappointed."

  • "I have now dined at La Urbana on four occasions. The first three the food was outstanding. On my Last visit it was sadly mediocre. My biggest disappointment was my entree of grilled fish with mole sauce. The fish was overdone and flavorless. I fear the restaurant might already be on a downward spiral and I'm not sure if I will dine there again."

  • "While this place serves up some good contemporary Mexican food and concocts some very delicious Mezcal cocktails, I would not recommend it to anyone. Mainly because it has the most inept, unfriendly and outright obnoxious serving staff, in particular the restaurant manager. He decided that answering a patron's questions about his bill was totally below him and invited me never to dine there again. His wish is granted."

  • "I'm mexican and LOVE trying on mexican restaurants in the area. This one is well designed... loved the decor and table setting. The staff was super friendly and did everything they could to fit in our baby's stroller and made sure we were confortable. BUT the food was terrible! The menu is very interesting and almost exciting, but that is probably one of the reasons why I was so disappointed when I actually tasted our food. They only things that we really liked were our drinks! This place needs some serious improvement in the kitchen, and since that is the most important thing for me in a restaurant (right?) I cannot recommend it to anyone. A real shame..."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at La Urbana! Decor was vibrant with many small & interesting touches. Staff was welcoming and knowledgeable. We had 2 delicious appetizers - Aguachile ceviche and pork in black bean broth with pea shoots and house made tortillas. We had two salads : one with scallops, with mango, jicama, chile and more. Another with wonderful grilled asparagus, arugula, nopales. We shared an entree of sea bass with crispy skin on cauliflower polenta with poblano cream. Each bites had surprises that were still harmonious. We had two amazing and visually beautiful desserts with delightful flavor and texture surprises. Tried a Mezcal flight with its special salts and orange but will stick to tequila. Memorable night!"

  • "Extreme delays, entrees served at different times, completely inattentive wait staff. It's too bad. The food has great potential. But apparently there's no professional in charge of service operations."

  • "We loved it. My title says incredible cocktails because mezcal is brilliant for rethinking American cocktails like old fashioneds. The cuisine is fantastic. Delicious Mexican dishes."

  • "Cool and funky decor, service was great but overall the food was just ok. Some of the portions were very small, some were over salted and others were not as tasty as they sounded on the menu. They have their specialty dishes that keep people coming back but otherwise it was just ok."

  • "From the moment we walked into the restaurant we were greeted by friendly, smiling hostesses! We enjoyed hanging out in the bar area before being seated at our table. The cuisine was scrumptious - everything was absolutely good! However we felt the menu was a tad limited so we won't be making this a weekly destination maybe a monthly one!"

  • "At our table, drink service was good, our waiter suggesting several of their specialty cocktails (which were all great). We ordered a table started of tortillas and avocado, and also ordered mains. The starter (5 tortillas in a stack with a half avocado sitting next to it) arrived promptly. As simple as it sounds, it was tasty. Then the wait began. Tacos and huevos took nearly 90 min. Tacos excellent; eggs underdone and gelatinous. Nobody sent anything back since we had waited an eternity to get them. The waiter managed the situation pretty well for most of the time, occasionally disappearing (maybe from embarrassment). I wouldn't go back unless I knew the issues in the kitchen had been fixed. That kind of wait for brunch is unacceptable."
