A word from La Urbana
The symbol of the neighborhood Cantina is an integral part of Latin American culture. Cantinas have been cherished by local communities for generations, providing a neutral space where all people can enjoy outstanding food and signature cocktails with their families and friends.

At La Urbana, we hope to respectfully reinterpret this time-honored tradition by using sustainable ingredients in a contemporary way that represents our Latin roots and global culture while continuing to push the boundaries of modern Mexican food.

¡Salud!

Don't expect to leave filled with rice and beans as the portions are pretty precious. That said, the food is delicious, fresh and creative. The chef seems to enjoy smoke so the beet salad included some smoked beets as well as just cooked on a bed of plantain puree. It was delicious just not a very big portion. Great mole and fabulous octopus. Again, the portions size is underwhelming, but the flavors are very big.

La Urbana was chosen by the person celebrating her birthday. Since I've been to many upscale restaurants in Mexico, I was curious about this restaurant in San Francisco. Overall, it didn't meet my expectations. The crowd mostly younger, apparently from the professional community given the prices and the fix menu. The sauces were good and well made, I could taste the distinctive chiles used. When our meals were served, the chicken was cold and sent back (the birthday guest). The manager came by, apologized and didn't charge for it; that was kind. Our server seemed distracted, we asked for two special manhattans on the rocks, and they came up. When the bill came, it was not correct! Fortunately another guest reviewed the items which I've not accustomed to do but sure will now. We had ordered a bottle of wine which was not in stock. We ordered another bottle but she also left the first bottle on the bill which we didn't receive and the bill was forty five dollars more! For me, those are three strikes and your out!

It was not as good this time as the time before. I was with a group the first time. This time just two of us. Not much was going on in the restaurant and did not have the energetic vibe that I thought that it would have. I may have gone too early on a Saturday night. I will try again at a later time of the night. I really wished that they had classic guacamole!

Everything was very good ...except the octopus. Usually one of my favorites but it had a mealy texture and was flavorless. It should have been taken off the menu if the quality was not up to the usual standards.

The drink menu is a small booklet while the dinner menu is a single page. The short ribs was my favorite dish. Ceviche was also very tasty. The octopus was OK but covered with nuts which I didn't care for. We also ordered the avocado with tortillas. It's just that. Very plain. Dishes are pretty small but the four dishes were perfect for the two of us (we're not big eaters). Lots of tables for bigger groups. Service was good. We arrived about 10 minutes early for our 6:30 Saturday night reservation. Most of the tables were still empty. The bar was full. The tables were mostly full by the time we left around 7:45 or so.

The ceviche is something I have never seen or tasted before! It is served in a glass jar. When you open it cold smoke comes out. It tastes most delicious and special. As a main dish I had the rips which I also can highly recommend. So tender and good! We will definitely be back soon...

We were eating early, starting at 6, so it wasn't full yet. However there was a long wait to place our drink order. My friend had read about the watermelon/basil margaritas, but the waiter informed us those are only served in The Garage (the adjacent bar). We then were given amuse bouches of strawberry aqua fresca -- and when we liked those and wanted our second round of drinks made with them, we were informed that wasn't possible (despite a listed cocktail being made with another aqua fresca). We ordered from the extremely limited menu (only 4 main courses) to be told the short ribs were not yet ready (it was now 7). Good food, weird idea of customer service. Waiter resisted a medium order on beef, said it had to be medium rare.

I live in the neighborhood and had high hopes for the place. It is beautiful inside: tasteful and funky and dark-wood warm. But it was way too expensive for what was on offer. The food was mediocre and came way too fast and all at once (we had tapas). The service was lackadaisical, as though someone had forgotten to properly train them. In the end, the biggest gripe was the cost. It's ridiculously priced, especially when you have the outstanding Nopa right across the street to compare it to. Nopa is pricey but worth it.

The food at La Urbana was amazing, though a bit slow getting to the table. The ceviche appetizer was big, filled with fresh tuna, avocado and cucumber; the main course of smoked rib-eye steak was delectable. Perfectly salted, with a great smoky aftertaste. The bar selections were overwhelming, but with somthing for everyone. I chose the house La Urbana Margarita on the rocks, and it was a perfect choice!

Sadly, we will not be returning to La Urbana. We had a special night planned with another couple at our new neighborhood hotspot, but were rudely disappointed when our server forgot several items we ordered, and wasn't apologetic about it at all. She brought only one soup for my first course, and when the second soup and salad for my boyfriend and our friends didn't arrive, we inquired about the timing. Our server didn't have an explanation and when she brought the balance of the first courses out, she didn't apologize for the delay. Our second courses followed suit. Only one entre came out at a time. When asked for more wine, our server didn't bring them out right away, and had to be reminded about them. It was sadly a nightmare.

Everything was awesome at La Urbana. At 8pm on a Friday we were seated right away with our reservation via OpenTable. The menu provides a different take on your average Mexican restaurant, but everything we had was amazing. Extensive drink menu with many wines available, as well as a plethora of house-made cocktails. Most of the menu items are excellent for splitting/sharing, which is fortunate considering you'll want to try as many dishes as possible.

The menu is always changing and evolving. And I continue to be blown away every time. Food is fresh, flavors are unique, presentation is beautiful. Dishes are truly a modern urban take on traditional Mexican food. Amazing. Only downside is that drinks and food can take a while dice they are always so busy.

la urbana looked interesting from a visual perspective. this spot has serious potential given the nice atmosphere & design, however brunch was hands down awful. the menu is complicated, lacks variety and they really missed the mark on the basics. how about offer a basic brunch item like an omelette or french toast? when we asked for iced cofee or iced tea we were told neither were available. really? typical overly complicated san francisco restaurant.

We arrived for reservation and it wasn't on their books so we had to wait a while for a table. Once we were sat, we ordered drinks and wanted to wait a while before ordering food. Our server came back and told us that if we weren't going to order food right then that we would have to give up our table and go stand at the bar. It was a completely embarrassing experience. We will never go there again.

Wanted to like this place. Nice space. Attentive waitress. However, the food was very mediocre. Octapus was rubbery and salty, pork carnitas was again too salty. The entree chicken was horrible. The sauce tasted like doctored catsup, sugary and salty. Food is way over priced esp for Mexican food.

It took 10 minutes for our server to come to our table and ask what we would like to drink. Also gave them the entire order for the meal including three starters. One appetizer arrived first still with no drink. Drink arrived a couple of minutes later. Two other starts arrived 10 minutes letter after they asked if we had received them. Big lag time between that and our entree (15 minutes). Staff was pleasant but not efficient.

It was a slow day. Our group of four and a few other couples were the only ones there. The service was terrible. It literally took 18 minutes to get a beer even after gently reminding them we ordered drinks. They eventually came over and took our food order and once the food was delivered, after a very long wait, that was the last we saw of the servers. They didn't refill the water bottle or give us the opportunity to order more food and drinks. Walking zombies that hate their job. This place has received great reviews but we couldn't figure out why. I can't imagine how bad the service would be if they were busy. I don't recommend this place.

The experience was beyond expectations. The eating implements provided were detailed, the presentations were thoughtful and well executed (the mole was poured from a pitcher by the server), the posole, farro and green peas were tasteful and emphasized the textures well, the eggplant entree was new and the churros were memorable. To be expected the dining room was full of 30-somethings shouting as their ordinary table conversation.

My wife and I dined at La Urbana on Thursday night and enjoyed it very much. The plancha de avocado was excellent and we loved it; our entrées (the Mexican squash and the steak) were good, but not spectacular. We had churros for dessert and, although they were very tasty, I don't think they come anywhere close Rosa Mexicano's. Probably the two best things La Urbana has to offer are the ambience (which was great) and the mexcal menu. They have a lot of options and they all look great. Their cocktails are also very nice. So if you're up to a fun dinner with a great atmosphere, great drinks and nice food, make sure you try La Urbana.
