Diner Reviews
  • "This was not our first visit to La Toscana in San Rafael, but it was the first time everything on the table kept falling to the floor. The tables for 2 are so tiny that even the bread basket does not fit. Add a water glass and a dinner plate and we juggled all through the meal to keep everything on the table. We were no successful. If you reached for the salt, something when flying off. They can really pack the room, but much of the silverware, service plates etc. are on the floor. Good food and good service. We will go back, but will seek a large table the next time."

  • "Food was good, excellent wine list, service was a little slow. Noise level climbed considerably and made for difficulty in conversing later during the meal."

  • "The lemon tagliatelle with seafood was delicious; the fish not overlooked and the pasta tender and flavorful. The service was discreet and timely."

  • "My husband and I went on a Wine Night Wednesday, where bottles are half off the regular price. We weren't too happy with our selection, but that was on us. The veal scallopini was very good as usual, but my husband wished he had order a pasta side instead of the vegetables. The arugula salad was excellent as was my ravioli with pesto sauce AND extra garlic. The restaurant was a little noisier than usual, and our table was a bit small, but we were treated like royalty."

  • "We took visiting friends to La Toscana and it was wonderful. Their remodeling was done to perfection making it an extremely comfortable place to dine. The food was marvelous. We all enjoyed ourselves immensely. And the service was also the best there is. This is our favorite "regular" place to go and we'll be back with other friends in about ten days. Not to miss."

  • "Very packed place which is good. But so loud - hard to hear yourself think. Wonderful staff. Good was good. I would come again."

  • "We had the Veal Scallopine and it was so delicious. The meat was so tender and flavorful and an ample portion, the salad Was a romaine with blue cheese and delicious dressing. It was crisp and very tasty. The service was excellent. We had A drink at the bar before we were seated and found the bartender to be very prompt and mad an excellent martini and Manhattan. Would definitely recommend and will be back soon."

  • "Convenient to Marin Center. Very crowded at 6:00 on Sunday evening. Appeared to be a lot of "regulars". Service was just OK. Seemed to need more waitstaff. We would go back."

  • "The perfect dining spot for shows at the Marin Center. I appreciated the fact that they asked if we were attending the show. The food was very tasty, wine perfect, and the cannoli fabulous. We were on our way in plenty of time."

  • "My husband took one bite of his spaghetti bolonese and asked if we could get the recipe. The waitress promptly brought the chef who sat down and explained how he made the dish with a printed recipe in hand!"

  • "We had a very nice meail at La Toscana. The service was attentive and the food was very good -- I had the calamari steak and my wife had the seafood pasta. My only issue was that the menu was a bit limited and somewhat traditional -- I couldn't see coming here frequently unless you are really into traditional Italian. That said, it is definitely worth a try."

  • "Made reservation for dinner @ 6:15 for a party of four. We had tickets to an event at 8:00 pm. We showed up at 5:45 , checked in and were not seated until after 6:30, in the bar no less, as they had used all seating in the dining room. Very noisy, cramped and no ambiance. Service was very slow, we barely got to finish our entrees, had no time for coffee or dessert and had to leave for the event. Don't go to dine there on a Saturday night if there is an event at the Marin Civic Center...you will be disappointed."

  • "There has been an updating at LaToscana and it is for the best. The food is still good traditional Italian, but with a couple of new items on the menu. Service was excellent (we had a birthday to celebrate and were accompanied by a Guide Dog). They were thoughtful with the table assignment as the dog needs to be able to be under and out of the way . They recognized the birthday boy with a delicious piece of tiramisu with a candle in it. A lovely evening."

  • "La Toscana has remodeled and they have done a superb job. The food is as good as it always was. We had the sole, which was done perfectly and the spinach, ricotta ravioli, which was exceptional. Portions are generous and service was very good. It does get noisy in the main dining room when it is filled and tables for two are rather close together. It is not for intimate dining. But for good Italian food, you can't beat it."

  • "La Toscana is one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants. I can always count on great, friendly service and very good Italian food. I highly reccomend for Both lunch and dinner ."

  • "This was my first and last time at your restaurant. We were promptly seated, but had to wait 10-15 minutes for a waiter to greet us. (There appeared to be some confusion who had our table.) We did not know about any specials on the menu until we heard the waiter explain them to people sitting at a table beside us. (We had already placed our order.) We did not care for the seating, since were sitting within arm's length of people on both sides of us. The food was awful. Chicken parm was bland. Pasta carbonara was overcooked."

  • "La Toscana feels like a neighborhood gathering. Many people there are regulars, and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and efficient. We were in no way rushed, even though it was New Year's Eve. From our appetizer to our shared cannoli's, everything was delicious."

  • "My family has been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years. The service and food have remained stellar throughout. It's old school Italian, in that they have all of the classic preparations that we know, love and crave. The last visit I had petrale sole as my entree, and I had a choice of which preparation I'd like. It was very fresh and cooked to perfection; succulent, moist and flavorful. and the sides are always fresh and good. My friend had the eggplant and it was very delicious as well. Our server, Linda reminded me of one of my Italian relatives, always making sure to spoil us and give us every little thing we might desire, but leaving us alone to enjoy our conversation. Generous portions and delicious food. I'll be back again!"

  • "We arrived early in the evening. The front room and bar were hopping. We were seated in the back room, and were able to talk and hear each other."

  • "A group from work had lunch here this week. The food was very good, but service was slow & it was so noisy that I couldn't even hear the words of the person seated across from me. Although La Toscana is pretty, the hard surfaces reflect the sound quite badly; some acoustical work would be a good improvement."

  • "Very crowed which is usually a sign of a good restaurant. This Sunday night there was only one waiter for main room. Very long wait for order and getting drinks. Food arrived cold. Might have had a chance if service was normal and food hot. Older crowd did not seem happy. May have been an off night but I won't take a second chance."

  • "It's not like it was bad before. I went there many times especially with out of town business types. But it was looking long in the tooth. The recent upgrade is nice and the menu makes more sense. All the food we had was very good which was not always the case in the past. The bar got most of the upgrade and it is much better. This is a great local Italian place. A safe bet for a good meal."

  • "La Toscana never fails to deliver. The food is consistently delicious with options for all. Have the cannelloni - or anything else! The remodel offers adjustable lighting options for tables, a renovated private room for parties up to 12-14, lovely new fireplace and several banquettes in main dining area, several tv screens in bar area and gracious servers."
