Diner Reviews
  • "I rated it quiet because there were almost no people there; don't know how it would be if it were packed. Maybe no people were there because the food we had was mediocre. 2 of us had the Nizzardi salad which is basically tuna nicoisse. The salad part was very good but the star of the show--the tuna--was meh. It was dry and tasteless. The other 2 had the chicken flatbread which was a green salad with chicken and flatbread on the side. I thought flatbreads were like sandwiches? They said it was OK but no raves. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things; maybe the pasta is better--let's hope. The server allowed us plenty of time to dawdle over the meal when we told him we wanted to talk lots and the general ambiance was good."

  • "We will return to La Tomate because the food and service are very good and it's on Open Table."

  • "First time at La Tomate, but it won't be the last. The service was great, our waiter, Martin, was attentive and knowledgable, the food was delicious. We were even able to enjoy delicious gluten free pasta dishes, as well as dessert."

  • "Service was so slow we were there for over 2 hours on our our lunch break. Also my friend was eating the pistachio gelato and found a purge of GLASS... IN HER MOUTH!!!! Definitely not going back there"

  • "Food was average Italian. My only complaint was the service was bizarre. Our waiter seemed very surprised to see us, and he never really got over that feeling. We felt like unexpected guests, not necessarily unwanted. He was polite we had to coach him through the whole process. It was one of the oddest meals I've had at a restaurant."

  • "Good food, good service and good location. I have always loved this restaurant and still do."

  • "The food and service were both very good. The three of us had 2 specials and one of the traditional dishes as well as shared calamari and salad and we enjoyed everything."

  • "Convenient location. This is an okay place. Okay Food. Okay Service. Okay Ambience. If you're looking for OK, this is an okay place to go. If you're looking for more than okay, there are lots of other places to go."

  • "Food was good as usual. Service was not good. Management was TERRIBLE. It took one and a half hour to get our entrees. No appolgy from a manager/owner who was wandering around."

  • "Service was great and the food was super. We ate outside and enojoyed the atmosphere."

  • "My pasta was wonderful, my wine (pinot noire) was fine, and the service was attentive and unobstrusive. My friend and I had a nice table by a window and were allowed to linger. Le Tomate feels cozy and classy and fun."

  • "My fellow gluten free friend and I came chose this place for our celebratory dinner because of the gluten free pasta on the menu. It's so reassuring when you talk to staff, and they understand what gluten free means! Right when we walked in the front door, the man at the hostess stand (appeared to be the owner/manager) was speaking in Italian to his colleague. It was a good sign. We had requested outside in our OpenTable reservation, and they had a nice spot on the patio all set up and ready to go for us! We had shared a mushroom pasta dish and pesto pasta dish. It was all so very good! I love a good pesto- you can really taste when it's fresh! Overall, an excellent experience! And in a great location."

  • "I had the tortelli and my husband had the ragout. Both dishes were excellent. Husband also loved his bloody mary. We couldn't complain about the service, water, food, drinks, bread, all received in a timely manner, but robotic is how I would describe the service. I'm not a fan of a chatty waiter but a wee smile or emotion wouldn't hurt."

  • "From the sweet French head waiter to the goofing 20-something table waiter, to the lovely outdoor dining area, to the incredible omlette, salad and prosecco, I left La Tomate a very happy person after my Sunday brunch. I had driven past this key location hundreds of times. This time, I was glad I stopped and wondered why I hadn't done it years ago."

  • "We often visit La Tomate for special occasions, and this year, celebrating my husbands birthday with La Tomate was a pleasurable experience! The food is always AMAZING and the atmosphere is always intimate and inviting. We really enjoy coming here!"

  • "Great selection of homemade pastas. We had the homemade fettuccini special and it was one of the best Pasta dishes we've had. Everyone in our group loved their pasta dishes."

  • "Food was good but the server and bussers lacked warmth and friendliness. Servers and bussers continually reached in front of diners to place/pick up dishes, etc."

  • "Went to La Tomate for brunch with a Living Social coupon. First, the deal is misleading. The only value you get is the two free mimosa's per person. The food was mediocre, not great, but not bad either. The service, however was another story. Our server seemed unhappy to be there, uncomfortable around people and bothered to do his job. I wouldn't go back again, even for a better deal."

  • "Consistently high quality food preparation each time we dine here!"

  • "the mozarella appetizer dish had eggplant; we preferred it like it normally is served with tomatoe. also the staff was slow to bring olive oil and parmesan with bread to the table after we were seated."

  • "Excellent location, nice atmosphere for dining 'al fresco'. The food was worth the wait as it was prepared. The pasta was a bit al dente, the way I prefer it, and the sauce was absolutely delicious. The worst part?--- not having room to sample what appeared to be marvelous desserts. I'll definitely go there just to try the desserts. A true DC hidden Gem, in my opinion."

  • "We have been to La Tomate several times. The first few times were enjoyable. The food is good and the service was ok, though a bit slow. But we attributed that to the laid-back atmosphere. The last two times we have been, service has been unacceptable. Last nite, it was non-existant. We were seated promptly. There were 3 other tables (so not very busy). Over the next 15 minutes, no less than 4 separate waitstaff passed us without so much as a nod. We left and went to Sette, where we had a very nice meal and MUCH better service. La Tomate chose to cancel our OpenTable res, which I understand. Though it did irritate me a bit - we lived up to our part of the bargin by showing up on time. Not our fault that they didn't live up to theirs."

  • "Delicious food at a reasonable price... would definitely recommend! The selection from the prosciutto bar was unusual and very tasty."

  • "Our regular table was ready in the far window corner of the bar looking out onto upper Dupont Circle. We passed several hours eating, catching up on the day's events and bidding a dear friend bon voyage as she set off on the next phase of her life so it was easy to overlook the imperfections of the service and mediocre wine. Go for the food and the location."

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant for us, because it is close and also dependably excellent - great food, drinks and setting. Particularly like the pasta dishes and prosciutto but never disappointed with any selections. "

  • "The food was really tasty. Mine was slihhtly salty but overall it was hood. The indoor dining was quiet and it was easy to hold a conversation. The waiter was really attentive and polite, knowing exactly when to come. My creme brule was also really light and sweet which made it taste really good. Prices are pretty reasonable for the food you get."

  • "The location is excellent. The appetizers and desserts were very good. My tuna entree was dry this time."

  • "The food is great and so is the atmosphere, but our server this time was terrible. If it happens again it will be time to find another restaraunt "

  • "The staff is very polished, welcoming, and knowledgeable. Went here on a Monday night for a quiet birthday dinner and the staff was so lovely about bringing out a chocolate cake with a candle and a round of limoncello. A++ Service. The food was good: homemade pasta and desserts were delicious but the caprese was not the best (overly chilled). "

  • "We had a wonderful time at Dining Out for Life. Even though they were running late on our reservation, the hostess took great care of us. Food was delicious. Only downside was the server who waited until 25-30 mins after we ordered to tell us that the pasta special I ordered was already sold out so I had to pick something out which meant more waiting and an 8:45 reservation turned into us not leaving until 10:30. We will definitely be back. Great that they support local non-profits and charities!"

  • "Short and sweet. Great food and ambiance. Was not impressed with wine selections. Service could've been much better from the hostess to our waiter. Great prices. Overall, deserves 3 stars. "

  • "Food was good, though sauces are a bit salty and heavy. The far could be improved with a lighter touch. Some of the waiters were a tad on the surly side, but ours was ok, if over-tabled. We would go there again to meet up with friends for a heartier meal."

  • "I spent with my son this period in Washington. First time in Washington and we were really impressed of monuments, museums, blooming trees everywhere, people in the streets, colorful houses, so many shops. We enjoyed all that. I work in a small town of Northern Ohio that looks pretty much different from the "big town" Being Italian I appreciate every place that remind my country and I would say that La Tomate is offering a really good choice of Italian food, cooked really "Ïtalian style". Good to make a reservation in order to be seated quite fast. So I will suggest my friends visiting Washington to go for lunch or dinner to La Tomate enjoying the location, the service, the food and living an Italian experience in the hearth of the States"

  • "I met a friend here while on a business trip in DC. I loved the access to metro stop at One DuPont, the table by a window, attentive waiter and quiet environment which allowed a great dinner conversation. My second time at this restaurant and it didn't disappoint with quality of food, service and environment."

  • "Very disappointed this time. Have been there many times but this was not so good. Pasta was undercooked and frankly the bolognese was just plain bad - salty and tasteless. smoked eggplant was tooooo smoky. will be a while before I go back"

  • "The food was only fair. Too bad it isn't better since the restaurant has a wonderful location with great outdoor dining."
