Found the newly-expanded La Tomate very comfortable for an early-autumn lunch. The menu accommodated our varied tastes, from vegetarian to devout carnivore. I had the Soup of the Day -- a very hearty combination of several kinds of mushroom. Service was attentive and friendly.

Familiar with La Tomate for nearly 20 years, I'm a longtime fan of this wonderful place to catch up over a leisurely Sunday brunch/lunch with friends whenever we converge in DC. Always. Excellent. Food. A note about Ambiance--the bar area was noisy even with only a few (loud) people; I wouldn't want to dine at the bar again, ever. The restaurant area would be better, or al fresco. My memories of the delicious eggplant appetizer and Prosecco and remembering their aromas is overpowered by one stinking issue: the bathroom desperately needed to be cleaned. It stank to high heaven. While I recommend La Tomate, I won't in the future if the bathroom continues to be deplorable and make me question their overall sanitation (eg, food handling).

  • Very Mediocre At Best

    Dined on 9/10/2014
Prior to making a reservation, I read several reviews of this restaurant and was amazed to see the huge disparity from "great" to "terrible". Truth be told, this restaurant is very mediocre at best. The food was bland, the service was slow (but our server was polite), and the prices weren't cheap. One thing that continues to make me scratch my head is why restaurants hire servers and bus people than cannot speak proper English.

The quality and level of service was impressive at La Tomate. Every server did his job like a real professional. The service had just the right touch, not too invasive, or letting you feel ignored. But, when it was appropriate, the servicer arrived. I have to add, when I speak of server, it was every member of the staff, from top to bottom from the manager to the man who filled the water glasses.

I've always liked the ambiance of this restaurant. A level up in elegance from most other Dupont restaurants. I also think the food is consistently good. My companion had the seafood pasta with squid ink and said it was delicious. I have to try it next time. Also nice to sit outside.

  • Great Food; but, sparse

The food was fabulous; but sadly, a little sparse relative to the price. The service was beyond compare (thanks Alexandra). The restaurant was clean, comfortable and pleasant. The ribeye special was fantastic; however it was less than .25" thick ... 3-4oz? The pork medallions were also delicious; but, 3 medallions less than 1.5" wide and about .5" thick? This looked more like an appetizer than an entree. Such great food should not be marred by paltry servings. My personal opinion is to provide a decent sized serving and raise the price appropriately.

I rated it quiet because there were almost no people there; don't know how it would be if it were packed. Maybe no people were there because the food we had was mediocre. 2 of us had the Nizzardi salad which is basically tuna nicoisse. The salad part was very good but the star of the show--the tuna--was meh. It was dry and tasteless. The other 2 had the chicken flatbread which was a green salad with chicken and flatbread on the side. I thought flatbreads were like sandwiches? They said it was OK but no raves. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things; maybe the pasta is better--let's hope. The server allowed us plenty of time to dawdle over the meal when we told him we wanted to talk lots and the general ambiance was good.

Food was average Italian. My only complaint was the service was bizarre. Our waiter seemed very surprised to see us, and he never really got over that feeling. We felt like unexpected guests, not necessarily unwanted. He was polite we had to coach him through the whole process. It was one of the oddest meals I've had at a restaurant.

My fellow gluten free friend and I came chose this place for our celebratory dinner because of the gluten free pasta on the menu. It's so reassuring when you talk to staff, and they understand what gluten free means! Right when we walked in the front door, the man at the hostess stand (appeared to be the owner/manager) was speaking in Italian to his colleague. It was a good sign. We had requested outside in our OpenTable reservation, and they had a nice spot on the patio all set up and ready to go for us! We had shared a mushroom pasta dish and pesto pasta dish. It was all so very good! I love a good pesto- you can really taste when it's fresh! Overall, an excellent experience! And in a great location.

I had the tortelli and my husband had the ragout. Both dishes were excellent. Husband also loved his bloody mary. We couldn't complain about the service, water, food, drinks, bread, all received in a timely manner, but robotic is how I would describe the service. I'm not a fan of a chatty waiter but a wee smile or emotion wouldn't hurt.

Went to La Tomate for brunch with a Living Social coupon. First, the deal is misleading. The only value you get is the two free mimosa's per person. The food was mediocre, not great, but not bad either. The service, however was another story. Our server seemed unhappy to be there, uncomfortable around people and bothered to do his job. I wouldn't go back again, even for a better deal.

Excellent location, nice atmosphere for dining 'al fresco'. The food was worth the wait as it was prepared. The pasta was a bit al dente, the way I prefer it, and the sauce was absolutely delicious. The worst part?--- not having room to sample what appeared to be marvelous desserts. I'll definitely go there just to try the desserts. A true DC hidden Gem, in my opinion.

We have been to La Tomate several times. The first few times were enjoyable. The food is good and the service was ok, though a bit slow. But we attributed that to the laid-back atmosphere. The last two times we have been, service has been unacceptable. Last nite, it was non-existant. We were seated promptly. There were 3 other tables (so not very busy). Over the next 15 minutes, no less than 4 separate waitstaff passed us without so much as a nod. We left and went to Sette, where we had a very nice meal and MUCH better service. La Tomate chose to cancel our OpenTable res, which I understand. Though it did irritate me a bit - we lived up to our part of the bargin by showing up on time. Not our fault that they didn't live up to theirs.

Our regular table was ready in the far window corner of the bar looking out onto upper Dupont Circle. We passed several hours eating, catching up on the day's events and bidding a dear friend bon voyage as she set off on the next phase of her life so it was easy to overlook the imperfections of the service and mediocre wine. Go for the food and the location.
