Diner Reviews
  • "I spent with my son this period in Washington. First time in Washington and we were really impressed of monuments, museums, blooming trees everywhere, people in the streets, colorful houses, so many shops. We enjoyed all that. I work in a small town of Northern Ohio that looks pretty much different from the "big town" Being Italian I appreciate every place that remind my country and I would say that La Tomate is offering a really good choice of Italian food, cooked really "Ïtalian style". Good to make a reservation in order to be seated quite fast. So I will suggest my friends visiting Washington to go for lunch or dinner to La Tomate enjoying the location, the service, the food and living an Italian experience in the hearth of the States"

  • "Food was good, though sauces are a bit salty and heavy. The far could be improved with a lighter touch. Some of the waiters were a tad on the surly side, but ours was ok, if over-tabled. We would go there again to meet up with friends for a heartier meal."

  • "I met a friend here while on a business trip in DC. I loved the access to metro stop at One DuPont, the table by a window, attentive waiter and quiet environment which allowed a great dinner conversation. My second time at this restaurant and it didn't disappoint with quality of food, service and environment."

  • "Very disappointed this time. Have been there many times but this was not so good. Pasta was undercooked and frankly the bolognese was just plain bad - salty and tasteless. smoked eggplant was tooooo smoky. will be a while before I go back"

  • "The food was only fair. Too bad it isn't better since the restaurant has a wonderful location with great outdoor dining."

  • "La Tomate was fantastic. The food I ordered was delectable. My steak was cook just the way that I had requested it be. The calamari was very tasty. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Great location too!!! Mary"

  • "Tasty food, nice service, reasonably priced, and with a low to moderate noise level, it's easy to have a conversation. Very pleasurable dining."

  • "In a rapidly changing neighborhood where everyone flocks to the hottest new restaurants, it is comforting to have a place to go that has reliably good food, great service, and an atmosphere where you don't have to shout across the table. It's one of my favorite places to have a business lunch or a casual dinner. I'll leave the bling, the long wait for a table, and the ear-splitting noise levels to those that seek out the newest DC food sensations. Give me the tried and true neighborhood restaurant any time."

  • "Love the entrees. Not the traditional italian spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli dishes. Selections remind me of meals I had in Italy."

  • "Good Food! Havent been for years and was pleasantly reminded that I need to go back more often. Lots of mediocre places to eat on Conn Ave but this one actually serve delicious fare."

  • "Nothing remarkable but nothing horrible either. It shouldn't take 45minutes to receive our meal when the restaurant is only 1/3 full."

  • "Service was slow and the restaurant was not very crowded. This restaurant was recommended by a friend . Food was just okay . I don't think we will return"

  • "It's been too long since my last visit to La Tomate, and I regret that, so I'm not going to let it happen again. The food, ambiance, and service were all exceptional, and I really enjoyed being able to carry on a quiet conversation with my dinner companion."

  • "it took 15 minutes for our server to acknowledge us, once he did he asked us what we would like to drink and then realised he hadn't given us drink menus. The service was slow, not once was the menu described to us and if we wanted service I had to get the servers attention. We asked for our steak dish to be cooked medium rare and it was delivered to us rare, how ever it was still tasty as were our other courses. My last gripe would be the restaurant calling me to confirm it was in fact my fiancées birthday and then on the night nothing was mentioned. Great food, poor service."

  • "My boyfriend and I went here for Valentine's Day. Perks: 1)They have a nice, romantic area upstairs away from the bar area; 2) They have a $15 corking fee, so you can bring your own wine if you'd like! Unfortunately, the service left something to be desired. It was 15 or 20 minutes before anyone brought water, bread, or uncorked our wine, and we definitely starting to wonder if we were going to get service. The food was very good and the portions were very reasonable and things were very reasonably priced. Not the best meal I've ever had, but it was certainly suitable for a romantic meal."

  • "Great resto, has been for years. Jonathan runs a great set of restso. Great seafood, menu changes often enough to keep things interesting. Octopus salad was excellent, nice combo of octopus and beansn. Fish was delicious, very nice tomato sauce. Excellent pinot grigio."

  • "I have walked pass this place for many years, so of course I thought this was a good place. Its been standing all these years. So I check it out during Restaurant week, POOOEY! The menu and Food was not good. Now, I've been told that I have to try La Tomate on a regular week, and order from the regular menu. Buuuut? IDK-- I don't think I'll return."

  • "Decent wine list, dinner for 3 was about $140 including wine and tip, reasonable for DC. The wild boar ragu and lamb special were tasty but the meat was dry."

  • "The food was as tasty as it has always been. The downside was the first floor wasn't even full (maybe only 6 other tables and folks at the bar) and it took us about 20-30 min to get our lunch. Both of our meals were the most basic on the menu. A good lunch still."

  • "In the middle of our nation's capitol on very busy Connecticut Ave NW this a very good reasonably priced bistro both for lunch and dinner. Ask for the Cotechino with lentils. Excellent."

  • "We were visiting DC on our anniversary and reserve a table at La Tomate. Literally from the moment we walked through the door, the service was superior. We had a lovely window table and proceeded to enjoy quietly attentive service and great food. The server brought us a complimentary limoncello, which was another nice touch. This is a neighborhood gem. If I lived in DC I would be a regular."

  • "Service was great. Aside from that, I was disappointed in the menu and the food. My friend and I wanted a light dinner. The options for small plates and apps seemed somewhat limited, so we each ordered a bowl of lobster bisque and split an order of penne pasta with pesto sauce. The complimentary bread basket as nothing special. The bread was not especially fresh and could have been better warmed up a bit. The soup had very few chunks of lobster and was almost a light cream of tomato. The pasta was very tasty but swimming in oil. If it weren't for the attentive service, I would have given the place only 2 stars."

  • "We have been enjoying this neighborhood gem for years. Great food, fun people, and Jonathan always makes us feel welcome. This was our first choice to hold our wedding rehearsal dinner. Many special occasions have been celebrated here. Highly recommended!"

  • "We really enjoyed La Tomate. It's in an excellent location right by DuPont Circle, and the food and service was great. We went there to get a late meal after seeing a play and found it relaxing and very enjoyable."

  • "Started with the crab cakes; crab was ground to a pulp; very mealy texture. Didn't know I was eating crab. Also had the shrimp and salmon ravioli. Again, couldn't taste shrimp or salmon at all; ground into mush. Used to visit in the summer when it was much better. But, I won't be going back and would never recommend it. Waiter was also indifferent and just stared, expressionless. Couldn't wait to leave."

  • "In a great location on Dupont Circle this neighborhood Italian restaurant has excellent food, good service and reasonable prices. It also his the virtue of being quiet enough to allow conversation, which seems to be a rarity these days. I particularly liked the prosciutto sampler."

  • "While visiting DC for work, I took a group of colleagues out for dinner and we had an amazing time at La Tomate. From the prosciutto plate we shared as a table, which was ample and delicious, to the salads, entrees and dessert, overall wonderful time was had."

  • "Nice variety of people. Relaxing outdoor atmosphere (indoor also available). Excellent selection of Italian dishes prepared with a modern twist. Flavorful and pleasing to the eyes as well as the palette. I will definitely return, for any occasion or none at all."

  • "Three of us went here for a quick dinner before an event. The staff handled us perfectly. The food was great. I had trout. I'll be going back to have it again. Everyone left happy. I'll be taking groups there again. We better service and food than most of the places I've been to in DuPont Circle at this price point."

  • "Especially liked the calamari with a basil olive oil dressing, in fact I enjoyed it so much I went back the following evening. The noise level was much lower than on the Friday night I was there. The host was most charming and remembered us from the night before."
