Amazing that people recommended the Tapas. Had four dishes and only one was even mildly flavorful. Lacking in veggies overall..The decor is very nice and the service was outstanding. Wish We would have had even one dish worth returning for. Have had excellent Tapas in DC elsewhere . Will not bother trying this again unless reviews indicate the food has greatly improved. We have had better Spanish food in Manila than the offerings here.

  • Where is the chicken?
    Sandra
    Dined on 10/18/2014
We ordered the paella and had a hard time finding the chicken, although there were two nice pieces of chorizo. I know there is supposed to be a lot of rice, yet there was too much in proportion to the rest. So the price for mostly rice seems a bit steep. We liked the appetizers, specially the french fries, ham and egg mixture; it did not look like the Spanish dish that I have tasted in the past, but it was good anyway. The sangria, perhaps a bit watered down. Desserts try to be imaginative and succeed up to a point. Green pistachio tiramisu anyone? This is a very nice restaurant; service was good, although they did not ask us if we wanted drinks before dinner and there was no drinks menu. It was busy and the staff was trying to keep up.

Staff was so professional all the way around and perfect!! The food was absolutely delicous. I mean..who orders Sardines at a restaurant! I love sardines so I went for it. The sardines with the cauliflower sauce was such a great combo. I can never enjoy canned sardines anymore as now I know how they are supposed to taste..I hope my local fishmonger carries them. My waiter helped me with my main couse...Since I had ordered a fish dish for the appetizer he suggested the suckling pig. I'm glad I tend to listen to the waiters input. The suckling pig was so moist. The outside was the crispy skin and inside the moist pig. It was so good, I almost cried!! Will travel again from Delaware just to dine here again!

One very outstanding features is that one person served our table. He took our orders, took the wine order and poured it, served the food, took and served the dessert and coffee orders and provided the check. He clearly took his job very seriously and was concerend about making our meal and enjoyable experience.

My not-yet-husband and I reunited after 28 years with lunch at Taberna and have returned each year to celebrate our annual reunion. Our waiter Douglass and the other wait staff provide five-star customer service, greeting us as old friends with a glass of champagne and specially decorated "happy anniversary" dessert. The appetizers, soups, entrees, desserts -- everything -- is delicious. Fit for foodies. This is a very special place. There is nothing comparable in Washington, D.C.

  • A huge disappointment

My husband and I went here for his birthday because he loves paella. The dated decor and the laminated menus was a reg flag. We started with the foie gras starter, which was heavenly, the grilled octopus and the sardine salad. We had an attentive server, Hugo, who made great wine pairing suggestions for every course. Personally, we like our paella "crusty" and the main course was a huge disappointment but the dessert was the worst dessert we have ever had. My husband had the chocolate trunk dessert and I had the pistachio tiramisu. Both were just bad. The tiramisu was "deconstructed" with neon green "cake" and congealed coffee jello. We are foodies and eat out all the time but will ever eat here again or recommend a friend.

I've been to Taberna many times during twenty five years, but have not been there during the past two. I was disappointed about the food this time. My friend and I ordered the seafood paella, I did not care for the flavor and ingredients in it, it just did not taste right. Wanted to have the manchego ice cream, which I had have many times there before, and as far as I'm concerned is one of the most unforgettable and delicious desserts, but unfortunately they no longer have it. The service and ambiance very good as usual.

We went to La Taberna because it was around the corner from our hotel, the reviews were good and it sounded interesting. The decor is very old school Spanish, with red walls, heavy furniture, etc. and the staff were very serious and attentive, almost hovering. We were presented with a large menu of standard (read old) selections. We had decided on our choices, when the waiter brought over a tapas menu. We decided to stay with our original choices, which in retrospect might have been a mistake. Both my husband and I were disappointed with our choices (roast suckling pig, dry and tasteless, monkfish- no flavour) Perhaps if we had taken the time to order the tapas, which I saw many waiters taking to other tables, we might have enjoyed it more.

We had a Gilt City for La Taberna (three tapas and a pitcher of sangria)...we ordered two other tapas and a dessert as well...without the voucher it would have been pretty pricey, but with it, it made the meal a decent price for really great food. There is free parking after 5:30 pm in a lot next door which also helps on the cost. The sangria hit the spot on a warm day - we only had two people split the pitcher, which was more than enough. All of the tapas (except for the lechon, which was not what either of us expected) were fantastic. Five tapas was a good amount to share between two people

I liked the food here a lot - my friends and I went here for DC Restaurant Week and while the portions were smaller, the meal filled us. The food doesn't seem to have THAT much of a Spanish taste or infusion, but the food was very well made and well seasoned. Presentation was nice, too. Service was attentive and our waiter in particular was charming and responsive. When we were forced to wait about 20 minutes past our reservation time, I think the owner of the restaurant came out to apologize himself and the hostess herself was very courteous. The place is very bougie looking, for lack of better word. Very regal and fancy looking, lighting was ample, though, so you're not just eating in the dark or in lighting that strains your eyes.

the decor is very nice, service was ok. There were six in our party and the restaurant wasn't busy. The wine list was good. We expected myriad tapas off the regular menu but found the list rather limited and devoid of vegetables, salads, but there was gazpacho. We ordered meats and cheeses that were nothing special. There was a terribly sweet soft "cheese" that was reminiscent of buttercream frosting. we ordered Paella that was anything but paella. At best it was "dirty rice" from a box mix with three or four pieces of overcooked shrimp a scallop no detected sausage, chorizo or chicken and scant vegetables - no taste, not even salt and definitely no saffron. the food was poor quality and poorly prepared. not recommended for anything.

I thought the Restuarant was very avg but the service above average. The waiters made you feel upscale and were very attentive to your needs. If my glass was empty the wine would flow (we purchased a bottle that they kept on ice near by) the plates were removed when needed. The food was good not great. I don't have anything bad to say. Bathrooms were outdated as far as style but VERY CLEAN.

Went there for restaurant week lunch to try a new local spot for me. In the end it's all about food, and this was bad. Every dish ordered came out very fast and either cold or barely warm. The mushroom appetizer was soaking in cold sauce, and the pasta was the same. Steak wasn't juicy or crispy, just watery - not even sure how they did it. Fish was completely soaked on water. Creme brulé for dessert, had been overdone, and was hard to crack, as the top layer was as hard as glass. Oh well, we tried..

We went for dinner during Restaurant Week before going to a show. Our waiter spoke perfect Spanish and was attentive but not intrusive. The dishes were authentic and reminded me of home. However, the decor also reminded me of home...my grandmother's old flat. The paintings of toreadors, carved wood, heavy chandeliers and blood fed velvet sprayed everywhere ...it was dreadful. And the looped recording of Flemenco singing was almost funny it was so cliche. Upscale restaurants in Spain do not look like this, even traditional ones. LTA needs to redecorate soon.

Wonderful atmosphere, good service but horrible vegetarian food. They have a special menu for vegetarians so by that fact they admit they can cook vegetarian. However, the courses I choose were absolutely horrible. The food had no favor. My husband had non-vegetarian food and it was good. Very disappointing. To the restuarant's credit, when they asked how I liked it and I told them, they did not charge me for my meal. That was very good business move and we will return and next time, I will try non-vegetarian.

Their restaurant week menu was embarrassing. The food that we had on our visit was cheap and poorly prepared. I had the mac & cheese surf & turf to start, which was basically wheat pasta with frozen shrimp and no sauce. She had the mushroom dish, which appeared to be canned mushrooms in too much sauce. The entrees were the real disappointment. I ordered the pork loin and when it arrived, I felt like I'd been pranked. First, it was three thin slices of stacked & overcooked pork. But, the real kicker was that it was served with a topping of what appeared to be Lays potato chips. She had the salmon, which was $3 extra to eat an overcooked cut of fish. For dessert, the rice pudding was EXTREMELY watery. We just left it. Very amateur.

This place is located on the outer edge of my weekday "lunching grounds". I had passed by it many times on my way to the IMF and always made a note to try it sometime. I finally took the time and took my wife. I regret that I had not done this sooner. You know you have found a great ethnic restaurant when many of the patrons are clearly from that locale. Large groups of Spanish-speaking people populated Taberna the lunchtime we went. A definite indicator. The meal was exquisite with considerable attention to detail and presentation. Each was a complex blend of distinct tastes that challenges every palette. Warning; the sauces are so rich I believe it is best to have a glass of wine.
