  • "Overall a very nice lunch. Unfortunately we happen to be there on a day when the air conditioning was on the fritz. Despite efforts to cool down the restaurant with auxiliary air conditioning units and fans, the dinning room was quite hot. Fortunately the food was tops."

  • "When I first dined at Taberna (because you don't just come to eat), I felt the experience didn't justify the prices. Now, the prices are right in line with other serious restaurants in town, and the experience is still first-rate. We are Iberaphiles (is that a word?), and the menu feels and tastes authentic. Started with ham croquetas, which I really liked & my husband LOVED. Fairly crispy outside, soft inside, very flavorful. I had bacalao, which was perfectly cooked cod in a DELICIOUS, garlicky sauce (that we lapped up with perfect, crusty bread). My husband had roast pig, which was served off the bone, terrific flavor, generous serving. Shared orange flan as dessert, great flavor, nice consistency. Perfect coffee, perfect service."

As someone who spent some time living in Spain and was recently in Panama (where the sangria was excellent in both places), I found the sangria here extremely disappointing. The rest of the meal was good. The highlight was the tapa of pulpo a la gallega. The paella was pretty good, I wasn't jumping out of my chair over it, but it was good. We enjoyed the complimentary bread and olive oil and banana pudding at the end, too. The portion sizes are pretty good for a "fancy" restaurant. The service and ambiance were impeccable. Good for a special occasion or happy hour."

Their fish dishes were just amazing and also can't go wrong with their steak. If you do have a chance, their happy hour is well worth it too. Free tapas with all that vino!!!"

  • "Being from Miami and having dined at several fine restaurants in Spain, I can say with some authority that La Taberna del Alabardero is as Spanish as it gets. The food is traditional Spanish fare (Paella, Suckling Pig, Tapas, etc.) so, if you are into "nouvelle cuisine", this is not the place. The service was pleasant and prompt and the atmosphere was romantic. elegant and quiet enough for converstaion."

  • "I brought family here for a graduation dinner. We were most all from out of town, and I chose the restaurant from online reviews and the neighborhood our hotel was in. I ordered the tasting meal and wine pairing for the table. When doing so, they ask you to choose 2 apps, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert (The entire table receives the same 5 dishes.) I took a leap of faith and asked the servers to choose all of the dishes. It was a wise choice, dinner was wonderful. The service was even better. It is nice to be in an establishment where there is a high level of professionalism in the front, as well as back, of the house. It was a busy night, with a lot of large parties; but they kept up perfectly. One note though: the bathroom is upstairs."

  • "We had boquerones, piquillos filled with merluza and the shrimp in garlic oil. Delicious! Our main courses, pork and bacalao, were fantastic. The desserts, rice pudding and torrejas, were also amazing. All in all, a great experience. Also, the restaurant and its ambiance helps you get yourself located out of Washington and into the heart of Madrid. We loved it and we are definetely coming back."

  • "The dining room is well appointed with beautiful trim work and exquisite wall covering. The wait staff are very knowledgeable of the menu and the sommelier makes sure you are happy with your selection and quite capable of answering any questions you may have. I started with the coastal soup that was rich in flavor and beautifully presented. My second course was the razor clams and I highly recommend these to all who dine here. Next I had a well conceived dish of sardines with citrus and served on top of a delicate crème fraiche that complimented the saltiness of the sardines well. My entrée was bacalao al pil pil and was extremely tasty. Memories of San Sebastian. The paella looked Miss Spain? Visit this fine restaurant."

  • "We were a group of 6 celebrating an end of college year with my daughter and 3 friends. The number of guests changed several times prior to our reservation,l and they were most gracious about it. our greeting was warm and friendly (in Spanish). we had several tapas dishes to start, and then had 2 different paellas, which were both great, and the filet in gorgonzola cheese, which was also excellent. The temparenillo red reserve was excellent. The desserts were "nuevo", and not characteristic of the menu style, and were only fair. Prices are expensive, but what would be expected. We closed the restaurant at 10:30Pm, which would be very early in Madrid...everyone was at the White House Press Corp dinner, I guess. "

  • "Saturday was the third time that I've dined at Alabardero; the first two times were with a big group of professional colleagues, so we had special menus, wines, etc. This last time was just my daughter and I. Because the place is Spanish, it was almost empty at 7 pm when we arrived, but we had the pleasure of watching the restaurant fill up. We had a great table. The menu was full of interesting items but not so long as to be overwhelming. The wine list was (a bit) overwhelming, but the wine waiter gave us very good advice, and we enjoyed a very, very good 2009 Tempranillo (sp?). Main course choices were lamb shank and oxtail, both very good. We were there for about 2.5 hours and never felt rushed. It as a very good meal indeed."

  • "This is an expensive restaurant. We went on a very busy Friday lunch, and the service was rather disappointing. Very slow - we had to flag down the waiter every time we needed something. It took forever even to get the menu cards. The food was good but nothing special. I had monkfish, and it was overcooked and rubbery. Plus the dish basically only had the fish. Other dishes looked better."

  • "What a wonderful experience! From the beginning to the end of the night, every aspect of the dinner was superb. We were using a certificate for the dinner, but had not brought the correct one. There was no problem at all and the waiter took care of everything. I was able to find the correct one the next day and fax it to the restaurant. With all the new restaurants in this city, it is comforting to know that an established place continues to serve wonderful food and wine, along with excellent service. There is just no substitute for a wait staff that so clearly takes service to their customers seriously and with grace. We will be back, again, soon."

  • "This was a fantastic experience. We enjoyed the 7-course tasting menu. The courses were heavily dominated by seafood -- octopus, squid, scallops, corvina -- and all delicious. The staff were great. You will be well served. The restaurant itself is beautiful...once you walk through the doors you feel as though you have been transported to Madrid or Sevilla. A recommendation ... maybe make reservations early and request a table with a street view; or, alternatively, a table with a view of the kitchen is also fun. The problem, the fantastically, exquisite experience does not come without a high cost."
