Diner Reviews
  • "Again, in my personal view, having dined in excellent restaurants in the US, Canada, Europe, Mexico, South America, the Caribbean, and the Far East, I hold to the view that this is the best restaurant, all things considered, that I have ever been to. I have been a patron for as long as the Taberna came to Washington, DC, and I have never been disappointed. My guests are always awed."

  • "Taberna del Alabardero is celebrating its 25th annivesary in Washington and still going strong! Always a pleasure to dine in its elegant rooms, eat and drink its delicious food and wines, and be served by its professional staff."

  • "I'll admit it was a mistake picking this restaurant for my team lunch. They don't have a lunch menu, so entrees start at $25 and go up from there. Or, you can order the "Executive Lunch" for $60. The three of us ordered Saefood Paella. I'll also admit to being an ugly American and probably not knowing what good paella at a Spanish restaurant is like. Is it swimming in cops of oil, and completely soggy? For $25, do you get just four small pieces of seafood? If so, then their paella was on the mark. None of us finished our lunches. Frankly, it was gross. On the plus side, the bread was good, and we got free olives."

  • "My previous meal (restaurant week) was terrific. This time great salad and mediocre paella..."

  • "A friend and I went to lunch to take advantage of Taberna's paella promotion, but the paella we were served wasn't the one we ordered. It was good, just not the one we asked for."
    Dined on 7/17/2014
  • "The food and service was excellent. The wine we ordered was not available but the wine steward offered an alternative that they had just received that was not on the menu. It was excellent and paired very well with the food that we ordered."

  • "The food here incorporates unusual ingredients and preparations in creating a Spanish food experience that is hard to find. A great selection of share-able appetizers complements a good selection of entree's and of course paella. We had the fish paella with langoustines which was delicious. The wine list offers a great selection of Spanish wines at all price points. The service is great and ambiance appealing."

  • "I try to stop by every time I come to Washington DC. Fantastic food, perfect service!"
    Dined on 7/14/2014
  • "No doubt La Taberna keeps the closest authentic flavors of Spain in DC. With a selection of traditional and we'll known dishes, this place is a sure bet for dinner."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "We've dined at La Taberna once or twice a year for two decades. The decline in the quality of the squid-ink paella, and the blandness of the appetizer and dessert both, saddened us immeasurably during Thursday night's birthday celebration, such that we couldn't admit defeat to one another until some time later. Betrayed by expectations! Places change. Chefs change. Managers change. We won't return. Even writing these words, I feel a void."

  • "When I first dined at Taberna (because you don't just come to eat), I felt the experience didn't justify the prices. Now, the prices are right in line with other serious restaurants in town, and the experience is still first-rate. We are Iberaphiles (is that a word?), and the menu feels and tastes authentic. Started with ham croquetas, which I really liked & my husband LOVED. Fairly crispy outside, soft inside, very flavorful. I had bacalao, which was perfectly cooked cod in a DELICIOUS, garlicky sauce (that we lapped up with perfect, crusty bread). My husband had roast pig, which was served off the bone, terrific flavor, generous serving. Shared orange flan as dessert, great flavor, nice consistency. Perfect coffee, perfect service."

  • "Overall a very nice lunch. Unfortunately we happen to be there on a day when the air conditioning was on the fritz. Despite efforts to cool down the restaurant with auxiliary air conditioning units and fans, the dinning room was quite hot. Fortunately the food was tops."

  • "Excellent food and service. Will definitely come back and recommend this place. And it's so near the Farragut west metro!"

  • "I am not a foody, i know what I like though. Every time I go to La Taberna, i get something different and it is always excellent. Some of the food sounds mysterious to my american ears, but it is incredible."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner. This 25 year old Spanish restaurant is trying to increase its appeal beyond its older clientele by modifying its wonderful paella offerings and adding a new twist on tapas. Service was friendly but unobtrusive."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "The service was excellent. The food was only so-so and extremely overpriced. Total bill $274 (including 20% tip and $96 in liquor charges). Overall of three days in DC, this was our least favorite dining experience. Would not return."

  • "The food was cooked to perfection as always. Notable wines, and a very attentive staff. I went for lunch this time, and was not dissapointed. The only sad thing was that a shrimp entre was not available for this visit."

  • "In one word, GLORIOSO! Congratulations on 25 years of service."

  • "Main dining room was Warm and uncomfortable. When asked they did not say it was not working. In the end we were moved (we were ready to leave) to the library and that made a wonderful dinner and a wonderful memory. Please fix that a/c!"

  • "We enjoyed our visit. As someone who spent some time living in Spain and was recently in Panama (where the sangria was excellent in both places), I found the sangria here extremely disappointing. The rest of the meal was good. The highlight was the tapa of pulpo a la gallega. The paella was pretty good, I wasn't jumping out of my chair over it, but it was good. We enjoyed the complimentary bread and olive oil and banana pudding at the end, too. The portion sizes are pretty good for a "fancy" restaurant. The service and ambiance were impeccable. Good for a special occasion or happy hour."

  • "The food here was excellent!!! Everything from the small plates to the sides to the entrees were amazing. The paellas were perfect...not too overcooked and not too salty. Their fish dishes were just amazing and also can't go wrong with their steak. If you do have a chance, their happy hour is well worth it too. Free tapas with all that vino!!!"

  • "We were a group of five, celebrating a milestone event. Food, wine, and service all fell into place to create a truly memorable occasion. Sweetbread appetizer deserves special mention as well as the suckling pig entree. Taberna lived up to our expectations in every way."

  • "Being from Miami and having dined at several fine restaurants in Spain, I can say with some authority that La Taberna del Alabardero is as Spanish as it gets. The food is traditional Spanish fare (Paella, Suckling Pig, Tapas, etc.) so, if you are into "nouvelle cuisine", this is not the place. The service was pleasant and prompt and the atmosphere was romantic. elegant and quiet enough for converstaion."

  • "I brought family here for a graduation dinner. We were most all from out of town, and I chose the restaurant from online reviews and the neighborhood our hotel was in. I ordered the tasting meal and wine pairing for the table. When doing so, they ask you to choose 2 apps, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert (The entire table receives the same 5 dishes.) I took a leap of faith and asked the servers to choose all of the dishes. It was a wise choice, dinner was wonderful. The service was even better. It is nice to be in an establishment where there is a high level of professionalism in the front, as well as back, of the house. It was a busy night, with a lot of large parties; but they kept up perfectly. One note though: the bathroom is upstairs."

  • "We had boquerones, piquillos filled with merluza and the shrimp in garlic oil. Delicious! Our main courses, pork and bacalao, were fantastic. The desserts, rice pudding and torrejas, were also amazing. All in all, a great experience. Also, the restaurant and its ambiance helps you get yourself located out of Washington and into the heart of Madrid. We loved it and we are definetely coming back."

  • "We were a group of 6 celebrating an end of college year with my daughter and 3 friends. The number of guests changed several times prior to our reservation,l and they were most gracious about it. our greeting was warm and friendly (in Spanish). we had several tapas dishes to start, and then had 2 different paellas, which were both great, and the filet in gorgonzola cheese, which was also excellent. The temparenillo red reserve was excellent. The desserts were "nuevo", and not characteristic of the menu style, and were only fair. Prices are expensive, but what would be expected. We closed the restaurant at 10:30Pm, which would be very early in Madrid...everyone was at the White House Press Corp dinner, I guess. "

  • "The dining room is well appointed with beautiful trim work and exquisite wall covering. The wait staff are very knowledgeable of the menu and the sommelier makes sure you are happy with your selection and quite capable of answering any questions you may have. I started with the coastal soup that was rich in flavor and beautifully presented. My second course was the razor clams and I highly recommend these to all who dine here. Next I had a well conceived dish of sardines with citrus and served on top of a delicate crème fraiche that complimented the saltiness of the sardines well. My entrée was bacalao al pil pil and was extremely tasty. Memories of San Sebastian. The paella looked Miss Spain? Visit this fine restaurant."

  • "Saturday was the third time that I've dined at Alabardero; the first two times were with a big group of professional colleagues, so we had special menus, wines, etc. This last time was just my daughter and I. Because the place is Spanish, it was almost empty at 7 pm when we arrived, but we had the pleasure of watching the restaurant fill up. We had a great table. The menu was full of interesting items but not so long as to be overwhelming. The wine list was (a bit) overwhelming, but the wine waiter gave us very good advice, and we enjoyed a very, very good 2009 Tempranillo (sp?). Main course choices were lamb shank and oxtail, both very good. We were there for about 2.5 hours and never felt rushed. It as a very good meal indeed."

  • "Excellent service and food was good. Place was very upscale environment but not stuffy at all. Excellent managers for example we didn't realize when we were paying the bill that tip was included and the manager ran out after us and advised us. He said it was too much money we left for a tip. Very respectable and honest place. "

  • "This is where you go for an authentic Continental Spanish gastronomical experience and you're not the least bit worried about the price! There is nothing here to confuse with Mexican, Cuban or other Latin American restaurants - this is authentic Spain from the get-go! Food, service and ambience are first-class!"

  • "My family (including two kids under the age of 8) dined at Taberna Friday night to celebrate a birthday. The food could not have been more delicious; the service was outstanding. The sommelier even took my kids to see the kitchen and presented them with chefs hats! We all had a marvelous evening and plan to return."

  • "The food and service was wonderful! Definitely would go back when in DC. Half a block from the metro very easy to get to and has outside seating too!"

  • "This is an expensive restaurant. We went on a very busy Friday lunch, and the service was rather disappointing. Very slow - we had to flag down the waiter every time we needed something. It took forever even to get the menu cards. The food was good but nothing special. I had monkfish, and it was overcooked and rubbery. Plus the dish basically only had the fish. Other dishes looked better."

  • "The food was ok, it's more of a old school traditional rest. I don't think I will be going back Nothing impressive!"
