Diner Reviews
  • "I have eaten here on many occasions. The food is usually good but the fries, served with a great mayo aioli sauce, are always limp & soggy. The burger is great! Won't order shrimp cocktail again. Half were ok the others mealy. Service was wonderful and server very accommodating. Excellent martini!"

  • "I dined at La Societe during Summerlicious, ordering the pate, steak frites, and key lime pie. The pate was excellent; however, the steak was very small. My partner ordered his cooked medium, and found it difficult to chew. The tables were placed very close together, and it was difficult to talk with all the noise. The waiter seemed distracted, and didn't seem to care that my partner had eaten so little of his steak. The restaurant itself has a beautiful interior, but if I go back, it will be for lunch only."

  • "I went to La Societe for the summerlicious dinner with my BFF. It was a wonderful night! Both of us ordered the pickerel dinner set. The food was delicious and really delicate. And I love the chocolate mousse at the end, which made a perfect dinner. So did the creme brulee! My friend loves it. :)"

  • "Read a few reviews before coming: atmosphere does set the bar high, but the food was, at best, non-descript. Dishes were mixed up, and there were a couple instances of the service having the need to put forth their two cents. Would go back for the patio and the drinks."

  • "The food was excellent but the service was lacking. We had a 5pm reservation, the restaurant was almost empty and they were trying to rush us out. Our waiter spent little time on us and never asked if we wanted a second glass of wine, or let us get a chance to order another. The food though was amazing. I would go back, but hope I get a different waiter."

  • "The food was outstanding! Every bite of every item we tried on the Summerlicious menu was tasty and satisfying. The only improvement I could suggest is the portion size of our entree. I ordered the steak frites and the steak was very, very small - perhaps 2 oz? I understand that we ordered from the Summerlicious menu and we were getting a deal on the food, so the portion size was likely smaller than usual. The appetizer (country pate) and dessert (chocolate mousse) were terrific! Very good food and very interesting setting. I highly recommend this spot!"

  • "Didnt expect the restaurant to be as good as i thought. Just had a group of 5 for my birthday and really loved the vibe they give off and waiters are really nice and friendly. It was a bit dim so when taking pictures you will need flash because you are going to want yo take pictures!!overall one of the best places to eat in toronto food and saint-glass ceiling. Yes theres saint glass."

  • "Made a reservation for dinner same day and hoped for an outdoor spot. Arrived to the restaurant with several (outdoor) tables open, and was offered to sit inside. All tables outside were allegedly spoken for, and of course, many still empty once we left. Was a little disappointing as it was a beautiful evening."

  • "Took 20 minutes to get a glass of water which never got refilled. Horrible service .. Got my drink 40 minutes later. Ask for a beef well done. Got it medium. Sat outside on the top patio and the railing is falling apart.. I couldn't believe this was a restaurant in yorkville. The only positive comment I have is the key lime pie was delicious. Will NEVer go again nor recommend it!!"

  • "Three of my friends and I went to this restaurant for Summerlicious lunch. We were very excited as we've heard great things but ended up being disappointed with the service. Our main course took almost an hour to be served after our appetizer. After realizing we have been waiting for so long the waitress checked in on the kitchen and informed us that they forgot. (No it was not busy). People who came in after we sat down were served their entire meals and left even before we got out entree. The waitress apologized and that's it. Food was OK but won't be back."

  • "Second visits to La Societe. Nice décor. Many waitresses and waiters there but I don't feel they were very cheerful. Summerilious menu were nice but taste of foods are not too impressive."

  • "Went for Summerlicious with friends. Food was average taste, service was average. For a Contemporary French Restuarant, I'm a bit disappointed. I expected better food, at least a better presentation of the dishes would made the experience better. Not recommended for Summerlicious, probably better if went for the regular menu."

  • "Went for dinner on a Tuesday night with friends and sat on the upper patio. Nice location, swank looking place. Service was very slow. I understand it's a casual bistro atmosphere where you're supposed to relax and take your time, but it took 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive. When they did come, there was lipstick all over one of the martini glasses. Waiter was apologetic and fixed it right away. The drink that came back was also in a dirty glass, but we didn't say anything the second time around. One of our bread plates was also dirty, with some dried crusties on it, and had to be returned. We had the Summerlicious menu, and everything was very nice. We all had oysters, steak frites, key lime pie or blood orange crème brule."

  • "I was served a 3 oz steak, I get burgers with more meat then that. Not to mention I ordered my steak Medium and it came well done, my friend wanted rare and got well done as well. Worse part is the portions were so small we had to go get food else where as we were still hungry."

  • "We had lunch here after a visit to the ROM. The food and service were very good. We shared a starter of roast beets and we both had the yummy lobster sandwich. Nice ambiance, a little overpriced but you have to consicer the location."

  • "We lunched about three times here during summerlicious 2014 and it's just always a great spot! Service was slower than usual because it was superbusy for summerlicious. The usual presentation of "regular menu" items is much more elaborate than the summerlicious choices, but for the price (20$ for lunch) I am quite happy!!"

  • "Dined and had after work drinks here. Great place, good food, great service the last times I dined at this place. However service was not as attentive to details during Summerlicious. I had to get someone's attention to get cutlery to eat my lunch."

  • "A very fine Summerlicious $20 lunch--oysters, chicken, dessert--well plated and served. What's not too like?!"

  • "the food is decent, doesn't stand out from other summerlicious restaurants, service was nice but slow, more like the laid back french style"

  • "I visited La Societie at least 6 times, mostly for lunch, so disappointed with their Summerlicious! For $35 dinner, the steak frites was paper thin! After 3 tries still over cooked than the medium rare I ordered! Besides the over price wine, I cannot justify spending $170 for this dinner for 2 people!! Nothing special except the hype of this place!!"

  • "I ordered a lobster sandwich and the price is not cheap. It looked and tasted like I order it from a fast food place. I could do a better job making a lobster sandwich. Very disappointed and hard for me to recommend this restaurant."

  • "A friend and I went for Summerlicious. It was good. The description of what was offered on the menu could have been clearer but we were satisfied with our meal and would like to try their regular menu. However, I think the service could be a bit better. It was a bit impersonal and cool - maybe that's what you expect to get in a French restaurant but I didn't appreciate that."

  • "The dessert is really nice. But the food took a while to get to our table, we had to wait on average 15min between each course."

  • "My order went to the table beside us. The waiters made no apologies. Upsetting."

  • "We have to wait for more than an hour to get our appetizers, it was a very long wait even our main entree took another 35 minutes from the appetizer, the only item that was fairly quick was the dessert. The food was not bad but after waiting so long to get serve I can't say I was impress. The place on the other hand is beautiful and the ambience is great."

  • "La Societe has been one of our favourite restaurants in Toronto, ever since its first appearance on Bloor Street. We have always been very happy with the quality of the food...until our Summerlicious dinner on 9th July. My wife ordered her usual non-alcoholic beer...out of stock. I ordered my usual local beer...out of stock. Not a propitious start! Then, my steak-frites, ordered 'medium' arrived very well-done. On an adjacent table what looked to be a sliced chateaubriand for 3 guests was overdone and returned to the kitchen. Not good enough, and very disappointing given our past satisfaction and recommendations to friends. Has the management changed?"

  • "Food was mediocre, service was forced. If it wasn't for summerlicious, I would never come back to this place"

  • "We just went for summerlicious. I loved the restaurant itself. It's got a great bar, cool vibe and super comfortable seating. We were all pretty unimpressed with the portions of the summerlicious menu. I dislike it when a restaurant puts steak frites on their menu and when it arrives, you're looking at a 3 ounce piece of beef. It's this type of thing that doesn't make me want to come back and try their regular menu. I'm on the fence about this place. I would go back to hang out at the bar though, for sure. The service was fairly good."

  • "The country pate was alright, though the crostini was super dry. The main course's salmon was... bland. It was perfectly cooked, but I wanted some flavours - some spices, some herbs, anything but just plain salt. Dessert was the highlight. Although the creme brulee was too creamy to finish, the chocolate mousse was phenomenal. I'd recommend the dessert to anyone."

  • "We went there for Summerlicious and the oysters were superb. I also had the salmon with basmati (black) rice and the rice was excellent. With salmon there are hardly any surprises, so it was good. Dessert (chocolate cake) was also good. What annoyed me the most was the waiter at the entrance. I booked the table days before for lunch but by the time our group arrived there was no table available in the main seating area. We were suggested to wait for 10-15 minutes. The waiter gave us an attitude on my comment that it was a well advanced booked reservation and guided us to a dark corner away from the ambience. Overall, it was quiet, so we could conveniently talk, but I still felt that I missed out on the overall feeling of the place."

  • " ...that count when you're attempting to create a certain atmosphere. Steak Frites arrived well past medium instead of medium rare. Waiter was very gracious and it was replaced. Still charged the full bill tho, including drinks and dessert. I've been to places further up the food chain that comped at least something off the bill for the mis-step. The floor staff were struggling with high-maintenance Summerlicious hordes, so that might have had something to do with it. I guess it stung more because we weren't doing the Summerlicious thing."

  • "La Societe is one of our favourite French restaurants in Toronto, not fancy or overly pretentious but a nice variety of typical bistro fare and bustling patio great for people-watching along Bloor Street. This time we shared the small seafood tower with oysters, clams, tuna tartare and scallop ceviche, very fresh and a great starter. Folowed up with the three-course Summerlicious Prix Fixe with country pate, steak frites and orange creme brûlée. Small portion of pate, and very tiny steak (what do you expect for $35 Prix Fixe?) but very well prepared and the creme brûlée was delicious and reasonably generous in size."

  • "As soon as La Societe found out we were doing Summerlicious we were rushed to order. Our waiter tried to take away our plates before we were done. We asked for suggestions and were given one word answers. Only thing that wasn't rushed were our drinks which didn't arrive until our half way through appetizers. The steak frites were tiny- even by Summerlicious standards. One had to be sent back- both were lukewarm. Obvious that they had been sitting around until needed. A couple beside us (not doing Summerlicious & spending $$) began complaining about every element of their meal. A totally off night for this place? Either way- the point of Summerlicious is to get new customers in. I won't be going back due to my Summerlicious experience."

  • "A very good spot to enjoy a terrace lunch after Bloor Street shopping. People watching and breezy terrace combined with good French fare and reliable service means we will return. Experienced waiter with odd but witty sense of humour - made the society a little less predictable. A good thing."

  • "The weekend brunch is enjoyable as it is not too crowded. The eggs Benedicts are tasty and service is good without being too intrusive."

  • "Friendly service and the food was good. My server was very attentive and subtle. Although he was busy with a few tables and helping manager install new drawer into the service table, he still looked up to check his tables. He kept my water full and wiped off bread crumbs that another server missed when they took away my appetizers and bread basket when I was done. Food was presented attractively and was delicious. I was a bit worried before I came because there were many bad reviews for service here, but I didn't have that experience. Highly recommended for dinner."
