Diner Reviews
  • "We have to wait for more than an hour to get our appetizers, it was a very long wait even our main entree took another 35 minutes from the appetizer, the only item that was fairly quick was the dessert. The food was not bad but after waiting so long to get serve I can't say I was impress. The place on the other hand is beautiful and the ambience is great."

  • "Food was mediocre, service was forced. If it wasn't for summerlicious, I would never come back to this place"

  • "We just went for summerlicious. I loved the restaurant itself. It's got a great bar, cool vibe and super comfortable seating. We were all pretty unimpressed with the portions of the summerlicious menu. I dislike it when a restaurant puts steak frites on their menu and when it arrives, you're looking at a 3 ounce piece of beef. It's this type of thing that doesn't make me want to come back and try their regular menu. I'm on the fence about this place. I would go back to hang out at the bar though, for sure. The service was fairly good."

  • "The country pate was alright, though the crostini was super dry. The main course's salmon was... bland. It was perfectly cooked, but I wanted some flavours - some spices, some herbs, anything but just plain salt. Dessert was the highlight. Although the creme brulee was too creamy to finish, the chocolate mousse was phenomenal. I'd recommend the dessert to anyone."

  • "We went there for Summerlicious and the oysters were superb. I also had the salmon with basmati (black) rice and the rice was excellent. With salmon there are hardly any surprises, so it was good. Dessert (chocolate cake) was also good. What annoyed me the most was the waiter at the entrance. I booked the table days before for lunch but by the time our group arrived there was no table available in the main seating area. We were suggested to wait for 10-15 minutes. The waiter gave us an attitude on my comment that it was a well advanced booked reservation and guided us to a dark corner away from the ambience. Overall, it was quiet, so we could conveniently talk, but I still felt that I missed out on the overall feeling of the place."

  • "As soon as La Societe found out we were doing Summerlicious we were rushed to order. Our waiter tried to take away our plates before we were done. We asked for suggestions and were given one word answers. Only thing that wasn't rushed were our drinks which didn't arrive until our half way through appetizers. The steak frites were tiny- even by Summerlicious standards. One had to be sent back- both were lukewarm. Obvious that they had been sitting around until needed. A couple beside us (not doing Summerlicious & spending $$) began complaining about every element of their meal. A totally off night for this place? Either way- the point of Summerlicious is to get new customers in. I won't be going back due to my Summerlicious experience."

  • "The size of food is pretty good for summerlicious. Desserts are delicious."

  • "Ask for the upstairs patio in the late afternoon/early evening - you won't be disappointed."

  • "I was disappointed by the side if the steak frites I ordered. But overall the experience was good."

  • " ...that count when you're attempting to create a certain atmosphere. Steak Frites arrived well past medium instead of medium rare. Waiter was very gracious and it was replaced. Still charged the full bill tho, including drinks and dessert. I've been to places further up the food chain that comped at least something off the bill for the mis-step. The floor staff were struggling with high-maintenance Summerlicious hordes, so that might have had something to do with it. I guess it stung more because we weren't doing the Summerlicious thing."

  • "La Societe is one of our favourite French restaurants in Toronto, not fancy or overly pretentious but a nice variety of typical bistro fare and bustling patio great for people-watching along Bloor Street. This time we shared the small seafood tower with oysters, clams, tuna tartare and scallop ceviche, very fresh and a great starter. Folowed up with the three-course Summerlicious Prix Fixe with country pate, steak frites and orange creme brûlée. Small portion of pate, and very tiny steak (what do you expect for $35 Prix Fixe?) but very well prepared and the creme brûlée was delicious and reasonably generous in size."

  • "The weekend brunch is enjoyable as it is not too crowded. The eggs Benedicts are tasty and service is good without being too intrusive."

  • "Friendly service and the food was good. My server was very attentive and subtle. Although he was busy with a few tables and helping manager install new drawer into the service table, he still looked up to check his tables. He kept my water full and wiped off bread crumbs that another server missed when they took away my appetizers and bread basket when I was done. Food was presented attractively and was delicious. I was a bit worried before I came because there were many bad reviews for service here, but I didn't have that experience. Highly recommended for dinner."

  • "The location and ambiance of LS is nice. However, depending on your server the service can be snobby or very relaxed and welcoming. It's too bad there is this inconsistency. Otherwise, I would be frequenting this well located restaurant more frequently. The scallops are phenomenal and the mussels are good."

  • "Not sure if our waiter was new, however we had to repeat our order several times as he kept forgetting that he had taken it...even though he was writing SOMETHING on his notepad. We also didn't get water refills at our table (others did) which is unacceptable when it is 30 degrees outside and we're sitting on a patio. Having said that, the Lobster Benny was delicous, as was the open-face omlette and the short rib has."

  • "Staffing is the biggest problem at this restaurant . Hostess got it wrong from outset and the servers then were not flexible including where oysters could or could not be served. Not in the section we had chosen on our third move of tables. So we stayed put And decided on fish entrees because of the accompanying fiddle heads and ordered only then to be told by the kitchen , NO fiddle heads. Once we got our second choices , the tuna tartare and the scallops were surprisingly delicious . However , no atmosphere whatsoever and just ok service . Won't rush back nor recommend to others ."

  • "Although I like having lunch and dinner at La Societe, I would never go there for lunch on Saturday and Sunday when the only choice is the brunch menu, which is very restricted. The menu was disappointing and only good part about the food was the delicious and excellent apple tarte. Service was very good."

  • "Having just returned from Paris, where the service in even bistros is good, it was so enjoyable going to La Societe and being looked after by professionals!!!! Service in general is pretty awful in Toronto, at your restaurant it is pleasant, friendly and most importantly, attentive. The food was enjoyed by the four of us, the salmon exceptional. Thank-you for making it such an enjoyable night out! If ever we want a sure bet for dining, we will choose La Societe!"

  • "We waited an hour for our food that arrived at staggered times to our table and lukewarm. Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. The food would have been very good had it been warm."

  • "La Societe was a great dining experience. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was very attentive and friendly. The food was really good, but I feel the meal could have been a little more complete (I had a steak which came wtih fries but no vegetables - sides have to be ordered separately). I would definitely go back and recommend to others."

  • "This restaurant has a beautiful decor reminiscent of a French bistro. Very comfortable and pleasing to the eye. The food is outstanding. Compliments to the Chef and his team. Service OK but needs perfecting. Pricing a bit high for the service rendered and the wine list needs tweaking, both for selection and pricing."

  • "This place have a lovely french atmosphere. Really nice touch if you want somewhere nice for brunch. I would have liked more 'lunch' items on the menu as everything seemed to be more for breakfast. Service was great and friendly. I had the lobster benedict which I think was a little off.. dad had a salad which was loaded with goodness and mom had the english breakfast. We had dessert which I would highly recomment the rhubarb cheesecake which is more like a mousse. I would come back here to try a chocolate crossaint. Definetely would come back to try dinner."

  • "If you are having dinner on Bloor between Cartier and Montblanc, you can expect a certain scene. That said, it is a great space (both inside and on the large patio) with attentive staff and solid French bistro fare."

  • "One of the best Coq Au Vin that I have experienced in the city. My dinner guest had salmon which I am told was equally delicious."

  • "Under a beautiful sky, we had a fantastic dinner of the salmon with veggies, and steak and frites. It was one of the tastiest steaks I ever had and grilled to tender medium rare. Starter of beet salad had great flavours. Dessert of the chocolate gateau and the rhubarb cheesecake was divine. The cheesecake was extremely light with just right amount of rhubarb to give a nice tang. To dine on the balcony overlooking Bloor St was a real treat. The noise from the traffic echoing like a canyon can be exciting (during an early dinner). The service was impeccable; always attentive without being intrusive. It was our first time and we cannot wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!"

  • "Had brunch at La Societe with two others. Food was good but a bit overpriced. I enjoyed my Crocque Madame but the fries that came with it were limp and soggy. Service could have been more friendly and attentive. My server did not smile nor say thank you once. Also, instead of asking me to move in, my server pushed his way behind my chair, without saying anything to me, forcing me forward and moving the table. This happened three times throughout my meal. He seemed rush but the place was nowhere near full. Based on this experience, I would not recommend La Societe to a friend. However, I have been here for dinner during Summerlicious, and had a much better time."

  • "I have been for brunch twice. Initially in the dinning - nice ambience, attentive service, good food. Maybe not as authentic bistro as Le Select Bistro - but a close second. My second time - I was on the patio - service was not quite as attentive and the ambience suffers due to the concrete surroundings"

  • "My husband and I had a wonderful dinner at la societe. The waiter was extremely attentive and even substituted a part of my meal with something that was only able to be ordered as an additional side. I highly recommend and the balcony patio is such a beautiful addition. "

  • "I took a friend for his Birthday. I asked for two things under Special Requests. My friend has a very bad back, so I asked for a banquet. They took us to a table with two chairs. When I asked, there was no problem finding a table with a banquet. Also, I asked for a candle on the dessert for my friend's Birthday. None arrived. Luckily he was in the washroom when the server brought dessert, so I asked them to remove both, add a candle and return when my guest had. They weren't really big problems and the staff were easily able to accommodate them. Why have Special Requests IF YOU DON'T READ THEM or, if you do, YOU DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO THEM, especially when there was NO REASON why they couldn't have been done! DISAPPOINTING!"

  • "When we first walked in the restaurant, we knew we were in for a treat. Beautiful decor; all black and white with dark wood. And the stained glass ceiling..... I had the day's quiche - a light vegetable in a delicious, buttery crust. It came with a side salad of leafy greens and a champagne dressing. My husband had the ham and cheese sandwich with an egg on top. Great whole grain grilled bread, good amount of ham, sliced thinly and cheese. Husband had a hard time finishing it, as fries came with it. We split the poached apple, that came with orange sherbet, cinnamon meringue on a thin almond biscuit. Ooooo la la."

  • "I've wanted to try this place for a while and love trying trendy and high end restaurants in the city. I was very underwhelmed with the food. The concepts and the menu items sound so great however, both my dish and my boyfriends meat dishes were dry and over cooked. The Mac and cheese was a tiny portion and the breadcrumbs on top resembled a sand-like consistency in our mouths. Sadly, we won't be back. "
