A word from La Sen Bistro
La Sen Bistro is an offshoot of Berkeley's La Rose Bistro. After many years of serving to loyal customers of theater go-ers and the nearby UC Berkeley patrons, La Rose Bistro transplanted itself to downtown Concord to become La Sen Bistro.

With the same vision of serving great food, you will enjoy the classic California-French samples of duck confit, salmon in saffron sauce, lamb racks, and escargot - just to name a few. Our great food was recognized by the Michelin Guide in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012 as well as the Zagat survey. Come join us at La Sen Bistro for a glass of wine and a taste of California-French cuisine.

Cheers to good food and great companies. Bon Appetit!

Diner Reviews
  • "Did not find much variance on the menu. Alot of salmon dishes. So tried the rib eye steak and meat lasagna. Lasagna was not fresh nor any sign of a sauce, so extremely dry and spices similar to that of curry? Not notable food at all. "

  • "Been here twice. Great desserts and very reasonable lunch menu!"

  • "Have been here several times with Serious Foodies as guests, and they walk away very impressed. Quite pleasant atmosphere, as if in a Paris Bistro. Will keep coming back."

  • "No comparison to true French bistros like Chapeau/SF and K&L/Sebastopol, but good value and some dishes are fine. Caesar had real anchovies, a rarity; French onion soup using Emmentaler was excellent. Crabcakes are more crabsalad than crab but still tasty. Steak frites was good, not great, but red wine shallot reduction outstanding altho slightly undersalted. Dessert of espresso custard was a let-down, tho: uninteresting and pedestrian, not a custard at all. Espresso drinks are superb."

  • "Consistent great food... chef has balanced the menu to include offerings that accomodate all tastes without exceeding the capacity of the kitchen/staff to deliver the goods. I requested that my pork NOT be overcooked, as had been the case on two prior occasions... my request was graciously received and relayed by our waiter and the pork arrived perfectly cooked. The flowers we arranged to have delivered were on the table when we arrived and we weren't rushed in any way, even though the house was full up. This is our favorite restaurant, hands down and we're so very lucky to have it in our town!"

  • "It's been a while since I was here for lunch, but I thought I remember it to be good. We had a reservation, but still had to wait 15min to be seated. Even then it took a few minutes to get table ready. The staff apologized from the start, but we weren't offered any water while waiting and we didn't even notice they had a bar until we were there quite a while and then we just waited for our table. They didn't tell us either about the bar. Pretty disappointing considering how small it is.I had crab cakes and didn't find anything special about them. 3 others said they liked their dinner, filet mignon, pork chops and other friend liked her crab cakes. Not sure I'd go back."

  • "Who knew that Concord had a gem: authentic French food with a California nuance at reasonable prices and friendly staff. Good bye Berkeley; hello East Bay"

  • "We recently visted La Sen Bistro on a Sunday evening with out of town guests. We chose the restaurant because we have had an outstanding experience whenever we went. However, on this particular evening most of the guests ordered Beef Bourguignon and the meat was tough..."

  • "Even with the address in hand, we found them hard to find since there is no sign that is visible. There is an awning but the awning does not have the name of the restaurant on it! Only indication is the name of the restaurant etched on the door in small letters. BUT, once we found it we were VERY pleased. Really great food (had the duck breast and halibut for entrees and french onion soup and roquefort salad as starters...all were really, really good). They only had one server for the entire restaurant, but he was wonderful. If someone wanted to chat with him about the food or wine, he took the time and handled all the tables really well. The food did take a little bit longer than it probably should have, but, again...very worth the wait."

  • "this was our first time at the restaurant and the staff was simply overwhelmed with the number of guests. The staff was pleasant and the food was great, but the service was very slow. Too many guests and not enough staff. I recommend it for the food, but hope that they hire more people."

  • "We absolutely love this restaurant. What a great find. The food is fabulous. We have been to this restaurant numerous times and plan on going back again in the near future. This restaurant is a class act, what a gem."

  • "I've been here several times now and the food is wonderful. I rarely choose duck as it's not my favorite, but because of the descriptions I've tried both versions. The confit is amazing! I also enjoyed the French onion soup. I've tasted several of the desserts but so far my favorite is the little apple/carmel pies with gelato. For those with mobility challenges, the restaurant is on one floor so there's no problem. The staff seems very accomodating so if you require any special seating, I'm sure the would be happy to arrange it. It is a small place and can be a little loud, so if you're looking for a quiet, romantic dinner, maybe ask for the back table! Go and enjoy!!"

  • "It's delicious! Three of us dined on Tuesday eve, a slow night Ambiance was warm and we were graciously welcomed by the host. There was a large group but noise level was very comfortable and our service did not suffer. We ordered the Salmon Tartare was outstanding. For our main entree 2 of us ordered the Duck Confit which was well seasoned flavorful and perfectly prepared. The duck fell off the bone the sauce and vegetables perfectly cooked and all the flavors combined well. The Lamb was wonderful and prepared as ordered. We all thought the food portions were ample and not overwhelming. We brought our own wine which was opened expertly by the host. A real gem which we hope local Concord patrons will appreciate! Will definitely return."

  • "We've been to this restaurant four times now and every time it has been great. The food, wine and service are always spot on. We highly recommend the lamb and I'm a sucker for a good bowl of French onion soup, they deliver on both."

  • "As most French dishes go, sauce determines the final product. La Sen's sauces tend to be too much on the side of being sweet, and, sometimes, inadequately cooked down."

  • "LaSen is becoming one of our favorite restaurants. Their food is excellent...French Onion Soup is outstanding. We are never disappointed here. Service can be slow at times but it's never a problem. We highly recommend this place to our friends."

  • "Had lunch yesterday with a group of 6 (that suddenly turned into 8) The staff was very nice, accommodated us by adding a table to make room for everyone. The food was terrific, as usual (I had vol-o-vent with shrimp). We had an enjoyable experience, with only one less than perfect comment. It seemed they were understaffed. Every table was occupied at lunch, yet there were only 2 servers. They worked very hard to keep pace, but I must say the service was pretty slow. Perhaps another server would've made a huge difference in the service."

  • "The service, food and presentation were of the highest quality. It was a wonderful 37th anniversary dining experience."

  • "first time. both appetizers we had (prawn salad, crab salad) were outstanding; portions perhaps a tad on the small side, but other than that no complaints whatsoever. my main course was duck breast with polenta and a very good rich sauce to accompany...very good. wife ordered salmon; tasty but a little dry. relatively short but adequate wine list (certainly commensurate with the size of the restaurant), with what i thought were very reasonable prices. regarding noise level and service: we ate there on a quiet mid week night with only 3 other tables of diners. so noise level was not an issue, and service was very good. would that be the same with a full house? don't know, but we'll probably find out as we'll certainly be going back."

  • "It is a bistro well worth nurturing by customers frequenting the place. Inspite of the good food, I never saw the place filled more than half way. Only complaint I have is their muusic being somewhat too loud."

  • "Went for a business lunch. Only 4 tables full so expected better service. Food was very good. The Salmon with Artichokes was excellent. Steak and Fries, Tender and juicy. The owner ? (asian male) spent most of the time on a stool behind the bar on his cell phone. No one checked to see if everything was fine after he dropped off the food. Food delivered to wrong people, thus reaching over table to trade (there were only 3 of us). No one filled water or ice tea glasses. Had to ask for a steak knife. Asked for check and 20 minutes later still did not have...really..... with 4 tables! I would go back but I would probably make it clear when I entered what I expected as far as service is concerned."

  • "My husband and I had a reservation on a Sat. night. We were seated on time. First the food, ordered escargot--very bland. My husband had the soup which was mushroom bisque-very good. I had the lamb chops-done exactly to medium rare and they were quite good. The other entree was the rib eye--looked more like a market or hangar steak but done exactly the way it was ordered--lacked a lot of flavor. On to the service--pretty much non-existent. We ordered a bottle of wine--our waiter delivered it and never bothered to refill our glasses. Never checked our table after we received our food. Too bad, really would like to see this restaurant succeed!"

  • "La Sen was somewhat difficult to find due to its lack of signage. Once we were seated, we found the ambiance quite pleasant. The complimentary cilantro pesto and warm crusty bread were a delightful start to our meal. We opted for the house red, a perfectly fine Cab. Our salads, the salad with Roquefort and apples, and the Cesar salad were cold, crisp, we'll dressed and plentiful. The duck confit was quite good; the moules a la creme were tasty, but quite rich, not something we would order again as we prefer moules in a simple white wine reduction. Our server was "distant" at first, but with some friendly persuasion, he loosened up a bit. We look forward to returning to La Sen to try other menu items."

  • "The bouillabaisse special was small in quantity and not much flavor. Two in our party ordered it. Duck & lamb orders by others in party were good. I had cold frites on another visit."

  • "Great neighborhood restaurant. We came from North Bay. Delicious food: French onion soup, tender duck breast, crab cake salad. Hard to choose, wanted to try beef bourguignon and bouillabaisse! Wonderful desserts. Service was friendly and personable, but long periods when we didn't see our waiter. Seemed to be short-staffed."

  • "Let's just say that the service is horrible, the place is tiny leaving you to sit close enough to ask the people at the table next to you to pass the salt, and the portions are so tiny I'm certain they don't even carry doggie bags. It took longer to get the bread & water than it did our entrees oh wait....they brought us our bread just as we finished our entrees. After asking for water so many times, it was finally brought to us 40 minutes later! My hubby's scallop dinner consisted of 6 nickel size scallops and some purée mmmmm, not! I will say though that my veggie lasagna (which I'm quite sure is Italian & not French) was delicious. All in all out of 5 stars I give it a minus 3. "RIGHT AWAY SIR" you know who you are!"

  • "I've now had lunch and dinner at La Sen and both experiences have been really good. The food is tasty, nice selections and wines are nice. The service for lunch was good, dinner service a little slow, but all in all a great experience and a nice surprise in downtown Concord."

  • "This place has the best value French food you will find anywhere around the East Bay. We had the steak frites, veggie lasagna, 2 salads and a bottle of wine - for less than $60 before tip. Prices are a little higher at dinner but still extremely fair. Don't go expecting a steakhouse steak or classic French cuisine - this is a bistro and it serves bistro food to perfection. Perhaps most encouraging: the service was outstanding - far more attentive than on our last visit. We will be back soon."

  • "I've been to LaSen for lunch approx. 15 times. I always walk out of LaSen raving about the food...it has never disappointed! I recommend this great place to anyone who will listen. My husband and I had dinner there last Sunday and the food was delicious (as always) but it was too crowded, noisy, and not enough servers for the crowd. Tables were about 10 or 12 inches apart. We had to ask for napkins after getting our food (got paper ones and noticed everyone else had cloth napkins). Reservations were for 6:00..we were seated immediately but service was VERY slow. We had only entree and a shared dessert. No appetizers, no after dinner drinks, and we didn't prolong our stay by choice. We left at 8:30. Food-incredible FOR LUNCH!"

  • "Our group of four went on a Saturday afternoon and the service staff had called out with an emergency. I have to say the man that was host/server, etc did a good job handling everyone on his own! My grilled salmon salad was very good!"

  • "The food is good although not outstanding and the service is kind of hectic. We had at least 4 servers attend to us during our dinner. I order a glass of "Cote du Rhone" (One of the only 2 French red wines) and it was obviously not from the Rhone valley. The general experience was not bad but we will not go back."

  • "Had dinner here just recently on a Sat night. They take reservations by phone and via Open Table. Apparently they do not have a way to integrate in house reservations with Open Table data because they appeared wide open all night on their system. We arrived 7:15 as reserved, they saw our reservation, place was jammed. They told us to wait at the bar, that it would be 10 mins. Well after seeing two twosomes seated ahead of us one of which had walked in the restaurant after us, we inquired. We were forgotten and seated 25 minutes afterwards. They did expedite our orders but then neglected our wine order in the commotion. Please get a handle on your front end and the flows on the floor because your food is just terrific as it was on Saturday!"

  • "Having lived in France for many years I found La Sen Bistro an excellent place. The food was up to Parisian standards and the atmosphere romantic and comfortable. Thank you for a memorable Valentine."

  • "La Sen has been open for over a year now. We have been several times for lunch and dinner and this place has consistently been a winner. The steak frites are as close to what you would expect to be served in Paris as you will find this side of the pond. Other dishes are equally authentic. The wine list is inexpensive, with good choices to be had at every price point Our most recent visit was for Valentines Day, when an excellent if pricy prix fixe menu was offered."

  • "I can count the number of reviews that I have written on one hand, but had to offer my opinion of this wonderful new restaurant. I have had two amazing dinners so far, and plan to go back often. The food is absolutely delicious -- everything is very fresh and wonderfully seasoned, and the portions are perfectly sized. I had the filet the first time we visited the restaurant, and it was outstanding. The Roquefort salad was delightful, and the pesto dip that comes with the warm bread is addictive. We went back this week and ordered the Beef Bourguignon, and it was the best I have ever tasted. Tender roast, sweet carrots, mushrooms and a magical sauce that I wish I could duplicate and put on everything. Highly recommend!"

  • "We've been to this restaurant a few times before and always enjoy their cuisine. I love their duck, although this time it was missing the leg/thigh portion which is my favorite. The lamb chops are good too. The only bad this is that their chairs are hard wood and horribly uncomfortable. I felt aching throughout the dinner."
