A word from La Pulperia
La Pulperia, a restaurant featuring rustic Latin cuisine from Chef/Owner Carlos Barroz and Victor Medina, opened on Monday, February 11 on Restaurant Row, at 371 W. 46th Street. Named for the general stores found throughout South America, La Pulperia offers Barroz’s simple yet refined food from the countries of Latin America, with European influences from places like Italy and Spain.

La Pulperia, designed by Andres Gomez (Red Rooster, Whitehall, SoCo) mirrors the authentic pulperias of South America, with handcrafted floor tiles from Mexico, reclaimed wood from Brazil on the ceiling and walls, and abundant shelving displaying top shelf liquor, fresh produce, and wine. Eventually the restaurant will sell packaged foods, like its namesake. It seats 60 (including a long burgundy banquette along one wall and a large communal table in the center of the dining room). Gomez’s handmade brass lamps with Edison bulbs hang over several of the tables.

Diner Reviews
  • "Very expensive for what they gave you. Food was not prepared well. The octopus was exptremely tough and "un-eatable". They do not serve alcohol"

  • "This place is unlike any other around the district. The Fish ribs are a must for any foodie. There were 5 of us and we all had different dinners and all were outstanding ."

  • "Food was very good. We had the guacamole as an appetizer and it was great. We also ordered the short ribs which were also great. When I made the reservations I told them we were celebrating a birthday. At the end of the meal they brought a piece of cake and sang. However, when I looked at the bill I noticed they charged me $9 for the cake. I never asked for the cake, and if I had known I was being charged for it I would have chosen something different."

  • "We went with a party of four to La Pulperia before a Broadway show. The location was perfect in its proximity to Broadway, and food was as memorable as we expected given the other reviews online. The service was exceptionally attentive and warm, and was among the best we have encountered at any restaurant. So, overall, we would highly recommend this place to friends!"

  • "I love this place for dinner but had never been for lunch. My colleague and I were the only people in the restaurant. My colleague and I split empanadas, lobster taquitos, and the moqueca. Everything was delicious. It's a bit pricey for lunch so I really wish they had a lunch specials menu. Other than that, I can't complain."

  • "Had a great pre-theater dinner with my lovely wife on 5/30. We didn't know what to expect but we like to try new restaurants when we are in NYC. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, but we were greeted by the friendly bartender and wait staff and were seated in the cozy restaurant of maybe 25 tables. First, try the specialty cocktails--the bartender has a gift! Second, cerviche was out of this world, as was the arugula salad. Third, ask about the fish entrees on the menu--they make some outstanding dishes that we have not experienced in other restaurants in NY or in other South Amer restaurants around the US. The fish ribs, for instance, were awesome. So was the branzino because of the accompanying sides. Enjoy!"

  • "Amazing as always. Makes us feel at home and great food. I had some inconsistencies with a plate I ordered but told them and fixed immedialty. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Restaurant was easy to find and we were seated quickly. The seating is tight but a top-notch cocktail put concerns aside. The menu is small but has excellent choices. I had the Moqueco, a seafood stew and my wife the skirt steak. Both were good. Midway through the meal a party of six was seated next to us at a table that would barely accommodate four. There was spillover into our space and the noise got out of control. Service was great throughout the meal. "

  • "A warm greeting and a menu focused on a range of delectible South American foods. We had cievche, cod, and sangria braised brisket. It was all very good. Seasoned spicy as appropriate and rich for the meat. Great pisco sours. Expect to make a return visit. "

  • "We had a great meal and had great service. It's only been around for about a year but this one is worth visiting. Try the Pacu Fish Ribs. Delicious!"

  • "This was our first time to La Pulperia, and we were unfamiliar with the south american cuisine. Our waiter offered suggestions, which we took: we started with the "Ceviche Chef's Selection" which was fabulous! Then we tried the Moqueca, Pacu Fish Ribs, and the Sangria Braised Short-Ribs. Each of us raved about their meal, and the Moqueca was the most delicious dinner I think I have ever had anywhere! It was so fabulous we went back after our show for more appetizers and dessert. Also great, original cocktails -- mmmm! Friendly, helpful staff."

  • "Although we were not able to be seated at the time of our reservation, the manager was very accomodating and allowed us to order our meal and we were able to be served our appetizers as soon as we were seated. He also offered us free cocktails and we were able to get to our Broadway show on time. Food was delicious too!"

  • "Early 7:00 pm theater show to get to so we shared 4 delicious plates including a salad - all were delicious. Suggestions provided by server were most helpful. She was also aware of our time constriction and helpful with moving things along. A happy camper, I am, I am!"

  • "I came here by chance on Cinco de Mayo because they had a reservation for 3 open at 8pm. This place, located on Restaurant Row (W. 46th Street), is small but charming and offered fresh food and great service. The manager was extremely friendly and took time out to chat with me when I arrived before my party. Try the Prickly Pear margarita to start and finish with basically anything on the menu. I definitely recommend."

  • "Interesting mariachi band, but between them and the high noise level, we were basically shouting at each other at a table for two. The best thing we had were the empanadas, hot, not greasy, very tasty. The ceviche was quite good, but not very memorable. I would pass on the queso fundido next time. Although served on cast iron, it cooled quickly to become congealed and difficult to eat. The special prickly pear margaritas were excellent, but just a tad sweet for my taste. The service was great despite it being packed."

  • "I was the only person for 12:30 pm lunch until arrival of party of 5. That was good in that tables are very close together. No one else entered during lunch. The lobster taquitos were not as expected--soggy tortilla shell with unrecognizable lobster--resembled diced shrimp. The barbecued Pacu fish ribs were interesting. The BBQ sauce is overpowering--if you like BBQ sauce it is good. Server was attentive and helpful. Interesting menu but doubt I would return given many other better choices in Manhattan. "

  • "I never saw any other restaurant offer fish ribs. Pulverize has meat melting off the bone, BBQ slathered, mouthwatering. This dish is worth the trip by itself."

  • "On May 2 my mother turned eighty years old. We made reservations for five thirty. Because she is older she is a little slower and we were running late. I called the restaurant and advised them we were still on our way. They were warm and understanding. When we arrived we were treated very nicely by all the staff. Our waiter was pleasant , friendly and very professional. The food was outstanding. My mom had the fish of the day and I had the braised short ribss which very tender and tasty. After dinner the waiter brought mom a nice piece of flan and sang her happy birthday. Although this was my first time it will not be my last. Everything was great and they helped me celebrate a very special day with my mom."

  • "We were going to the theatre and picked this place based on reviews. We are from California and loved this place so much we went there 2 of the 3 nights we were in town! My boyfriend had the Parpadelle with Short Ribs both times! The Ceviche was outstanding, particularly the Salmon Brulee! Such great flavors! The second time I had the Fish Ribs. What and interesting dish and wonderful flavors! The drinks were very creative and good! There were plenty of Latin wines to choose from too, which complimented the food. And the Tres Leches Cake.....YUMMY! Of course, the best part was the service and hospitality of Victor and Eddie! And a special kudos to Carlos, the Argentine chef! What an outstanding place! I would highly recommend to anyone! "

  • "This was a very nice restaurant and convenient for a pre-theater show. I loved reserving the table for 3 children and 2 adults via OpenTable, so easy! It was a bit more fancy than we expected so the children weren't sure what to order. But the guacomole and the chips were perfect and the Sangria for the grown-ups was delicious. The wait staff was superb! "

  • "Considering that this was an early pre-theater just after opening, we were surprised that they were "out of" some key menu items and only had a single dish of the whole fish offered on the menu. Their menu listed multiple wines but they had none of them available. However, they did offer us a chance to taste the few alternatives that they did have in stock and available for ordering - and when our check arrived after we finished our meals, the owner came over to apologize and comped our wine order. Though we might have preferred to order menu items they could not provide, what we had was excellent and an original take on S. American food. We'll give them another try as a potentially excellent place for pre-theater dining. "

  • "In a friendly and warm ambiance, this little restaurant offers nice south-american dishes with a wide variety of gravies and side typical orders. I enjoyed a perfectly cooked T Bone Eye steack, tasty, tender. The choice of wines is large, the Argentinian Malbec was perfect in color and temperature. "

  • "Came here after matinee at Hirschfeld Theatre. Easy walk and pleasant surprise. Being from California we were a little leery of what "Latin" food meant in NYC. We ordered the 3 ceviche Chef's selection appetizer. No need for chips, we used spoons. All 3 were absolutely divine from the salmon with hint of brown sugar to the calamari, shrimp and scallops. I was a little dissappointed that they didn't have the fish ribs that are a speciality of La Pulperia, but the grilled Branzino was cooked perfectly. The wine list is very limited however their cocktails were imaginative and complemented our meal. Be sure to request Victor's Milkshake (Quarenta y tres liquor with a float of cream) and the best tres leches cake ever. "

  • "As a New Yorker, I typically steer clear of places on cross streets that are too close to the theater district b/c they usually are over prices and mediocre. BUT this place is neither, I took friends here on Saturday and all 3 of us enjoyed our meals. The lobster taquito was delicious and not fried but fresh unlike you'd expect when you think about a taquito (think mini hard shell taco with fresh lobster) and the short ribs was delicious. Also, the service was really good. Fast and friendly (but I didn't feel rushed)."

  • "On restaurant row, great spot before or after the theatre. Inventive menu, cool vibe and creative mixologist. Really enjoyed the fish ribs and skirt steak. Defintitly will return. Really glad to find this in the middle of the theatre district where mediocre food abounds."

  • "Located at the far end of Restaurant Row, La Pulperia is rather small and cramped, but on a recent Friday evening it was full, lively and noisy. The staff was uniformly friendly and helpful, almost to a fault. The menu is limited and emphasizes seafood, but what the restaurant does, it does well. Recommended."

  • "Reserved here because of convenience to theater & great reviews. Ambiance is small & cozy; Service - gracious & friendly. I enjoyed a glass of red Sangria. My friend had ceviche mixto & quinoa salad- both excellent. Guacamole & cheese fondu with toasts for table - good, more than needed. I had fish ribs with coconut rice out of curiousity & good reviews -. very tasty. My husband ordered pork chops - served on plank (a bit awkward) with little side dishes: roasted corn, roasted garlic, pureed cauliflower, etc. Pork chop was generous. Dessert -shared tres leches cake. Server surprised my husband with flan & candle for birthday. Complimentary after dinner drinks - lovely touch.. Loved restaurant - want to return when not rushing to theatre."
