A word from La Pulperia
La Pulperia, a restaurant featuring rustic Latin cuisine from Chef/Owner Carlos Barroz and Victor Medina, opened on Monday, February 11 on Restaurant Row, at 371 W. 46th Street. Named for the general stores found throughout South America, La Pulperia offers Barroz’s simple yet refined food from the countries of Latin America, with European influences from places like Italy and Spain.

La Pulperia, designed by Andres Gomez (Red Rooster, Whitehall, SoCo) mirrors the authentic pulperias of South America, with handcrafted floor tiles from Mexico, reclaimed wood from Brazil on the ceiling and walls, and abundant shelving displaying top shelf liquor, fresh produce, and wine. Eventually the restaurant will sell packaged foods, like its namesake. It seats 60 (including a long burgundy banquette along one wall and a large communal table in the center of the dining room). Gomez’s handmade brass lamps with Edison bulbs hang over several of the tables.

Diner Reviews
  • "As a New Yorker, I typically steer clear of places on cross streets that are too close to the theater district b/c they usually are over prices and mediocre. BUT this place is neither, I took friends here on Saturday and all 3 of us enjoyed our meals. The lobster taquito was delicious and not fried but fresh unlike you'd expect when you think about a taquito (think mini hard shell taco with fresh lobster) and the short ribs was delicious. Also, the service was really good. Fast and friendly (but I didn't feel rushed)."

  • "On restaurant row, great spot before or after the theatre. Inventive menu, cool vibe and creative mixologist. Really enjoyed the fish ribs and skirt steak. Defintitly will return. Really glad to find this in the middle of the theatre district where mediocre food abounds."

  • "Delicious lobster taquitos and mushroom omlette and bottomless bloody Mary made for a great pre-theater brunch spot. Would definitely go again! Nice find in the theater district."

  • "Great experience! The staff were upbeat, friendly and accommodating and the food was great. The guacamole was incredible! All of our main courses were delicious and dessert was excellent."

  • "Located at the far end of Restaurant Row, La Pulperia is rather small and cramped, but on a recent Friday evening it was full, lively and noisy. The staff was uniformly friendly and helpful, almost to a fault. The menu is limited and emphasizes seafood, but what the restaurant does, it does well. Recommended."

  • "Reserved here because of convenience to theater & great reviews. Ambiance is small & cozy; Service - gracious & friendly. I enjoyed a glass of red Sangria. My friend had ceviche mixto & quinoa salad- both excellent. Guacamole & cheese fondu with toasts for table - good, more than needed. I had fish ribs with coconut rice out of curiousity & good reviews -. very tasty. My husband ordered pork chops - served on plank (a bit awkward) with little side dishes: roasted corn, roasted garlic, pureed cauliflower, etc. Pork chop was generous. Dessert -shared tres leches cake. Server surprised my husband with flan & candle for birthday. Complimentary after dinner drinks - lovely touch.. Loved restaurant - want to return when not rushing to theatre."

  • "I had made a reservatiopn on Open Table. When we arrived we sat at the bar to check the place out. The bartender and everyone who worked here made our experience so enjoyable. The attention to detail( it was noted that it was my husbands birthday) was so refreshing. Everyone that came by our table from the person pouring water to the owner were so very nice! The food was so unique, we really enjoyed the Fish Ribs. We will be going back......................."

  • "I was pleased with my selection of La Pulperia for our family dinner before seeing The Lion King. We walked past lots of other great looking restaurants on our way to La Pulperia. However, we are very glad we stayed true to our reservation committment because we would have never found this restaurant without Open Table's recommendation. It is small and just below street level with very obscure signage. It was a "true NYC dining experience". The wait staff was very friendly, efficient and really moving. The guacamole is awesome. We had the red sangria and loved it as well. I am the daughter of a marine biologist and have spent my whole life on the coast and have never had fish ribs! I ate them with my hands, like regular pork ribs."

  • "Went here for my birthday dinner after scouring yelp for somewhere new. The menu is small, but we ordered a bunch of different things to share and it was great. Waiters were very attentive, and (to my embarrassment) sang happy birthday and gave me a free piece of what I think was tres leches cake. It's small and you'll walk by it before you walk into it, but definitely recommend!"

  • "Its brick walls and dim lights gives a cozy ambiance. Service was attentive to start and then a little less so as the restaurant filled up though we never felt forgotten about. I’d mentioned to Eddy (host) when we first arrived that it was my friend’s birthday. He came by at the end of the meal with a piece of cake and a lit candle and wished my friend a happy birthday.,,nice touch! We started with the queso fundido with lobster and ceviche mixto. The queso fundido was good but not memorable. The ceviche was very refreshing…welldone! The Pacu fish ribs with coconut ricecame next as an entrée. Definitely something different! The orange-chipotle BBQ sauce was unusual but it certainly worked. All in all, a nice little place to go back to."

  • "We came back for one last meal in NYC. I sampled the langostino taquitas...perfection! My husband had the fish stew and it was sublime. Again, the cocktails, appetizers, wine, food, desserts..spectacular. This night was a week night, earlier in the day, quieter mood. Just perfect.i wish I could transport this restaurant to my corner of the world."

  • "We came here for my mom's birthday dinner before catching an 8 pm show. They were so accommodating - Eddie took care of us from the very beginning and was fantastic. He helped us put in our order quickly with amazing recommendations so we wouldn't be late to the theatre. When he thought we had ordered the chef's selection ceviche platter ($29) instead of the single $13 ceviche, he gave us the more expensive tasting platter for the lower price. The drinks were fantastic as well as every food item and it all arrived SO quickly. The best part though was when they brought out cake with a candle in it. EVERYONE was singing Happy Birthday to her! She teared up. We were out of the restaurant with plenty of time to make our show. AMAZING place!!!!"

  • "Crowded, a bit noisy (what isn't), intimate, creative food, convenient to the Broadway theaters, and overall fun dining experience."

  • "Although a little difficult to find, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at this restaurant. The waitstaff were friendly and helpful, the ambiance pleasant, and the food was amazing. My husband and I ordered four dishes which we shared. We highly recommend the extraordinary Salmon Brulee for an appetizer, one of their signature dishes. We also thoroughly enjoyed the butternut squash and pear soup which was a perfect balance between the two flavors. The lobster taquitos and beef empanadas were also very good. La Pulperia is located on W. 46th just east of 9th so it is very convenient for those catching a Broadway show. Go! You won't be disappointed."

  • "Trusted Tripadvisor reviews, we wanted a nice meal and were staying in Times Square. They were right! We so enjoyed our food/drinks and the attentive service. Since all the restaurants in the are are small, reservations are recommended, and the noise level is fairly high due to tables close together. We had a great non tourist experience in the high tourist area."

  • "Unlike many of the midtown restaurants, la pulperia has a local little restaurant feel and great food and service. Great place to go before a show if you want a great meal but without the typical overpriced touristy feel of many of the restaurants in the area. I will definitely return when in midtown."

  • "Food was excellent; service well done; everyone very friendly and welcoming. My only complaint is lighting. When I have to use the flashlight app on my Iphone to read the menu that is a sure sign that it is too dark. Restaurant should consider a change."

  • "It was my first time eating at La Pulperia and I must say I was very satisfied in the end! The restaurant was quiet for brunch (we were the only couple there). They offered a $15 endless mimosas for 2 hours and the food we ordered was delicious (steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare). Not sure how busy they usually get but I really enjoyed the place (well priced for restaurant row and great food/service). I'd definitely recommend it!"

  • "The folks at this restaurant were so pleasant and accomodating. The food...delicious. I'd strongly recommend the salmon brulee and the lobster taquitos (both appetizers). Hip crowd, dim lighting and mixologist ready to create different concoctions (which I appreciate). Would definitely return."

  • "Latin restaurant that did not disappoint. It was a quiet stormy night so the noise level may be different on busy nights as the tables are close by. Looks like it'd be a nice date night spot, bar also looks fun, a small tv would be nice. Food was prepared as ordered and was delicious. Service was great, I would hope that'd be the case on a busy night."

  • "We were in NYC for the weekend a month ago and wanted a spot near the theaters for a quick but delicious dinner before seeing a Broadway show. I found La Pulperia on Yelp and since my boyfriend is from Latin America, decided to surprise him with a "home cooked meal". So glad I did! It was delicious! Ambience is very cute and romantic, feels almost like you are in an old ship. Service was great, they asked what time our show was and made sure we were finished in plenty of time, the owner was so welcoming and even shared some tequila on the house as we were leaving to help warm us up to face the cold! In fact we loved it so much that we made sure to eat there again when we returned to the city a month later."

  • "Dined with family before show. Food was good. Menu limited. Wine list limited and key wines were sold out. I hope they do well, but they have to make sure they're serving their customers well. The food is really good, but the service and availability of product have to match the quality of the food."

  • "Found this place at last minute a few blocks from Times Square. Just a little space (42 seats??) but did not seem like NYC. Very welcoming from entering restaurant until we left. Ordered ceviche which was a great appetizer for 2, and I got the "Fish Ribs." I've tried a lot of seafood, but this was definitely one of my all-time favorites. Not found many places. The owner and chef were very engaging. Would certainly pick this restaurant over the more "well known" places in the area. Also bar would be great for interesting cocktails and the bartenders were also a lot of fun."

  • "I was excited to try a new place before the theaters and so was disappointed in our experience here. I have a few food restrictions so depend on the menu listings to judge if a restaurant would be right for me. It was therefore particularly frustrating to have the waiter tell us that almost everything, including the signature cocktail, was out of stock, not available. No apology, just a lame explanation, barely understood through his haughty, out of place accent. What food we were able to get was OK. A pear and such soup tasted only of spice, no hint of either pear or squash. Beef empanadas were not very tasty, although the dough was excellent."

  • "I just love the fabulous creative cocktails and new fusion Latin food. It is remarkable to find wonderful flavorful food for adults at an affordable price with a cozy ,charming and vibrant atmosphere. We dined pre theatre but really any time is perfect. Would go back in a heartbeat! Great gnocchi, ribs, ceviche and more! Such a welcome change from stuffy formal expensive dining. Please open La Pulperia in Bethesda, Maryland!!!"

  • "Our reservation got mixed up but we were still seated promptly. Waiter was attentive, did all that a waiter is supposed to do. Ambience -it is tastefully done but it is just average. Not much different than any of the other dozens of restaurants squeezed into a narrow space. We had to ask for the fixed price pre theater menu even though we were very early. The fish ribs are unique & delicious, salmon VG but polenta bland. The flan was exceptionally creamy - we all loved it. Chef is willing to alter things as needed for special diets. Especially with the fixed price pre theater menu it is an excellent value. Probably won't go back only because we like other places better, and we like to try new ones regularly."
