A word from La Provence
Country French inspired restaurant. At La Provence, “cooking with heart” means everything. The menu blithely ignores the cutting edge of urban contemporary French food, and instead reflects the time-honored, time-consuming rustic techniques that in turn reflect the rugged earthiness of the ingredients.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "It really is a soft and sweet place. John Besh left it pretty much exactly like it has always been. Kids may enjoy seeing the herb garden and piglets. A great place to go if you want to hear what your companions have to say."

  • "Went here for my boyfriends birthday. The service was impeccable. Food outstanding. Ambiance warming and welcoming. Jennifer, our waitress, was awesome. Can not wait to go back."

  • "Mainfood-related dissapointment was that there were 2 entree choices that were not seafood-related (. I know, I know, it's Lwnt season; but I have an aversion to seafood). I chose the filet which was flawless; loved the potatoes Dauphine. But the duckling was the only alternative. There was likewise little variety of dessert choices except an ice cream category. The Blackberry beignets looked great but were pricey considering my appetizer of gumbo ...( have no idea if my quail was tasty..... Looked nice; but difficult to sample) and filet were already racking up a hefty tab when you add in our Bottle of wine)."

  • "We go to La Provence for special occasions - this one was our anniversary. We had a wonderful meal. There were some items on the Market Menu that we wanted, and it was no problem to order them a la carte. The soup de poisson was exceptional - very reminiscent of the traditional fish soup in France, but with the bite of a portion of cayenne. My wit head the duck, which was up to its usual standard (i.e., excellent), and I had the flounder, which was marvelous. For dessert, we chose the blackberry beignets, and they also were wonderful. Since it was a special occasion, we ordered a bottle of the Vacqueyras red, which fit the meal to a T. Overall, and exceptional dinner at an exceptional restaurant."

  • "The Sunday "Price Fix" Brunch has several delicious choices for each of the three courses, at a very reasonable price and is a wonderful place to bring guests without breaking your budget. A real treat."

  • "Excellent out of the way spot. Must try when in New Orleans. Don't fight the crazy downtown scene."

  • "It was our 40th anniversary and everyone congratulated us. Nutella stuffed french toast was to die for! The room we were in had a fireplace with fire which made it very warm and inviting. Our server even gave us a bookmark poem to remember this special day."

  • "We took some friends for Sunday Brunch. It was our first time there and we were immediately charmed by the beautiful cottage setting. The descriptions on the menu were intriguing ..... "Yard egg in a jar" ...... "Oysters Ooo La La"...... And then we were hooked at the first bite. Every one of our dishes was unbelievably delicious!! The service was outstanding. The prices are reasonable .... Not cheap, but reasonable. Love the ambiance of the restaurant. Overall this was a great experience, and we definitely plan to return."

  • "My daughter came to town , we had brunch here, one of my very favorite places to dine on Sunday! When you sit down, you are immediately served the most luscious chicken liver pate and crisp french bread croutons, DIVINE. First course of crispy oysters could have used a bit more wilted spinach and more sauce but were still excellent. Main course, shrimp e'touffee over pasta ,too salty, and tasted burned, not at all what a light . The omelette stuffed with shrimp and lump crab was decent enough. Next time I shall order off the ala carte menu, as the main dishes have always been a bit too heavy and salty for me. Dessert more than made up for that, however."

  • "Really enjoyed our experience there. Everything was amazing, including Joyce our waitress. The food was really amazing and feeding the pigs made it oh so sweet. Also, great to make reservations on line and have person confirm day prior."

  • "La Provence's emphasis on the freshest locally sourced items, some produced right behind the restaurant, gives the diner a superb experience. Dishes are prepared with the greatest care, South Louisiana with a French twist. The atmosphere is rustic yet refined, never stuffy. This is seriously good food, but this Besh outpost doesn't take itself too seriously."

  • "We decided to try this John Besh restaurant because we were on the North Shore for something else. The location is interesting, but lovely. We were impressed with the attentiveness and friendliness of the service. The food was fantastic as well, but we were expecting that. At the end of our meal, we even got to walk through the kitchen and feed the pigs in the back. Great experience."

  • "The dinner we had was the Duck, which came rather quickly and presented with a blackened skin crust over a moist and tender and tasty meat. Both the leg portion and breast portions of the duck was cooked to perfection. The vegetables under the duck like the nuts, sautéed apples, beets, sautéed potatoes & onions were cooked to a tasty offering. All these tastes combined with the duck and wine were great! The wine offered was our request - a Riesling made in Germany. We thought that the wine was light and tasty and we enjoyed it with the meal. The service was surprisingly quick. We were offered the Chicken Liver Pate as we sat. The waitress bringing our dish (Jane) was engaging and sometimes funny which made our visit more enjoyable."

  • "I was sad leaving this restaurant. It's a beautifull place, off the beaten path about 45 min north of the culinary Mecca of New Orleans. Did you ever get the feeling you were being rushed? We were. 3 course, 2 wine pours, no offer of coffee, under an hour. That's not dining, that's a marathon that I didn't appreciate. Entrees were being brought before my fork dropped from apps. Again, not what I'd call dining, that's rushing. Food quality was substandard. Had to have be precooked and poorly reheated. Wife's duck was soggy, breast was tender, leg and thigh tough.my fish, dry. Dessert was nice, wine list nice, but I came to enjoy my experience not to race through it. Don't take 8 PM reservations if your going to make folks eat fast food."

  • "La Provence is one of the best fine dining spots I have been to. I highly recommend this one for anyone who wants a nice dinner., but does not want to wait for a table! GREAT!"

  • "We made the drive from Baton Rouge to dine at LaProvence with 2 good friends. The restaurant is very welcoming, and we were seated next to the fireplace...perfect for the slight chill in the air. Over a glass of wine, we talked while enjoying crostini topped with the excellent chicken pate. Appetizers were interesting, and the butter lettuce salad was memorable. Entrees were done to perfection (beef tenderloin was wonderful!). Desserts were a little slow in coming (the restaurant was packed...), but were worth the wait. Highly recommend the strawberry dessert. This is our second trip to LaProvence, and it will not be our last. This is a very special place...perfect for a relaxed afternoon/evening with friends."

  • "Perhaps when expectations are high anything short of extraordinary is a disappointment. The food was well prepared and the service more than excellent. The setting warm and friendly. Yet nothing really said this is special as in other New Orleans dining experiences. The menu offered a good selection including duck and rabbit, not often seen on the same menu The desserts were varied, fresh and delicious. I expected something to die for, maybe we need to give it another try."

  • "This is our second visit to La Provence. The first visit was outstanding. The food on this past visit was not up to par. All of the entrees were to salty. One Filet came out very rare, as opposed to medium. The Meyer lemon desert was too warm. The flavors were lost. Basically, the ice cream that came with it was the only portion of the desert that was eaten. The chocolate desert was, I believe, supposed to have a soft center. Neither one did. Regrettably, based on this visit I would not feel comfortable recommending your restaurant. We hit .500, which is a good baseball average, but not for a restaurant. My wife really likes John Besh, has all of his cookbooks, etc. This event just was not up to par."

  • "This was our first time dining at La Provence. Although it is a one hour drive from our home, I have already made another reservation to return next weekend. Everything about our visit was outstanding. The atmosphere was lovely, that of a true French country restaurant. We met friends for a drink in the bar and I didn't want to leave the bar - so relaxed and welcoming. The food was excellent - pate', butter lettuce salad, roasted duck, amberjack, lemon tart. Serving size was generous and pricing was reasonable. Service was terrific. Another John Besh gem !!"

  • "We live in the city, so it's an hour's drive to get to La Provence. But it's worth it. I love pulling into the parking lot in the middle of nowhere (though the area around the restaurant has developed a good bit since my first trip 20-25 years ago). It reminds me of the really high-end restaurants in France that might sit in a town of 100 people a three-hour drive from the nearest city. The place always had good food, but was a little run-down and dowdy before Besh took over. There was too much mauve and too many fake flowers. Now it's spruced up -- still country, but it's nice French country and not grandma's B&B country."

  • "La Provence has been our favorite north shore restaurant since we first dined there on our anniversary thirty years ago. The complimentary pate is a perfect way to begin the evening and has been a staple since our first visit (now chicken liver). The atmosphere is elegantly casual and the menu has lots of great options. One of the most appealing pluses is that there is no corkage fee. On our most recent visit, the butter lettuce salad was again superb, as was the grilled amberjack. We return again and again, and are never disappointed."

  • "My husband and I felt as though we had magically traveled to the South of France! The ambience is hard to top with two wood burning fireplaces, soft lighting, and smaller dining rooms. The menu had just enough choices and includes a "market menu" which changes daily depending on what ingredients are available and most fresh for the season. We both ordered the Market Menu which that evening included: Soup du poisson, a seafood pasta, and a fabulous dessert of blackberry beignets and lemon mousse. The service was just as warm and inviting as the atmosphere. We have great memories from our experience that evening and we cannot wait to come back!"

  • "We consider ourselves regulars at La Provence even though we're only there 4 or 5 times a year. Our treatment is always friendly and the food has always been delicious and unusual."

  • "The appetizers and desert were absolutely delicious and the service was terrific. The entrees were mediocre, especially considering the premium prices. I had the filet and my wife had redfish. I did not care for the texture or taste of the filet and the fish was somewhat "fishy"."

  • "Great ambience, awesome service with a smile. A gem of a place in the French tradition. Don't expect what you are used to, the food is French inspired and done with a twist. Outstanding beet and smoked shrimp salad and the Crab Bisque and Rabbit was outstanding!"

  • "Three of us had the special veal breast entree and crab bisque appetizer and I opted for one of their great ravioli appetizers and rack of lamb. We had a bottle of Perrin Syrah-Viognier which went very well with dinner. Our dinner company was so impressed with the atmosphere and over the top food and our waitress, Brandy, that knew the details of every dish and about so many wines. It's our comfort level go to place for every special occasion."

  • "We never had tried La Provence before but wanted something different for Valentine's Day. We really enjoyed the whole experience. The food is french so it has some different items; such as pates and rabbit, so we had to maneuver the menu, but they are very accomodating and so the experience was new and romantic."

  • "Beautiful restaurant with food that's unusual for the area. Everything fresh and lovely, and the accommodated my mother's vegetarian diet with ease. Can't wait to go back for our next special occasion."
