  • LPR, Italian in Lakeland?
    FrankieT
    Dined on 6/24/2013
Not exactly. The food is consistently good, sometimes wonderful. But even though it may have an Italian flair, it is far from Italian food. If I were to label the cuisine I'd call it California European. Servers are polite, but frequently a bit slow, perhaps due to the location of the "bar" which has uncomfortable seating for 5. Owners occasionally come over to greet patrons, which is nice. Prices are very reasonable, not cheap, but in line for what you'd expect for quality food. IF they ever turned the menu over to 90% Italian, I believe their business would quadruple! Assuming that Chef Patrick got familiar with the Italian recipes folks desire. Lakeland has NO Italian restaurant of worth. Pizza parlors, yes, restaurants, No!

Very nice comfortable surroundings. The beet salad was superb, probably one of the best we ever had. The soft live guitar music added to the relaxing atmosphere of the evening. Dine early (6pm) if you want the quiet surroundings. By, 7pm, the place was very busy and the sound level rose to medium, but still tolerable. The food is outstanding!

The food is good, but the service was horrible. The dining room lacked the basics: 1) Candle went out without any attention 2) Water galsses weren't refilled 3) Wine arrived that was wrong. The dining room was NOT short staffed, but no one seemed to know what they were doing.

This was my first time here and I was blown away by the great, delicious food and romantic atmosphere. The two of us had an appetizer, split a salad and two entrees for $70 so it's not inexpensive. But it is delicious and definitely worth a visit!

This was our first visit. Everyone enjoyed the food, servings were on the large side but that was OK since the food was worth taking home for the next day. The service was just OK but it was New Years Eve and they were booked solid. I think on a normal night the service would be excellent. When the food arrived it was hot so the kitchen may have been having a hard time keeping up with the demand. We will effeminately go back.

La Porta Rossa is truly a bright spot in Lakeland's dismal fine dining scene. Sophisticated decor, beautiful carefully crafted food and exceptional service oriented toward details make it a great spot for a special evening out. But relatively affordable prices make it god for everyday dining or lunch. My only complaint is that I feel at the prices charged, entrees should include a salad.

This is our favorite restaurant in Lakeland. Chef Patrick's offers delectable dishes and offers delicious grain breads with herb butters to go with them. The ambiance was fine, but we were seated next to the only other patrons in the room - so they were necessarily part of our conversation. The food was fairly good, but few vegtables or other diet conscious entrees. The wine was okay, but everything was a little pricey. The waitress was attentive and pleasant, but not my favorite. The menu on a board idea is cute, but clutters the table when a wine list is added. The lighting was dim, the way we like it - but a little too dim. It was difficult to read the menu. Overall, an ok dining place - especially for couples, but please space patrons apart in the room and make the menu a little bit more diet friendly.

The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere. The food has been consistantly good on each of my visits. The waitstaff seemed a bit distracted and while they need to be able to multi-task, when speaking with a particular table, should maintain eye contact with that same table. The live music was very nice but occasionally made it difficult to hear our guests. Regardless,we have recommended it to others and will visit again.

Excellent , knowledgeble, friendly service. Soothing ambiance. Great food. I would especially recommend the caprese salad and the Tuscan chicken braciole. Calamari was excellent, cooked just right, not chewy or greasy. My husband had a special request for his chicken parm. dish ( he likes it scallopine style). The chef prepared it for him the way he likes it. Kudos to the chef. We didnt get to dessert but we will definitely return.

While visiting Lakeland on our way home to Boston, we were pleased to find a local restaurant on Open Table. Right away John and I knew that our evening would be special. Our romantic table was close to Paul, the very talented and enjoyable guitarist. Strangely, one cosmo was excellent but one was oddly different. (Without asking, it was taken off the bill.) However, the wine, caprese salad and the fresh breads served with a very tasty olive oil were outstanding. John's cobea fish with risotto and veggies was very delicious. My veal chop with gnocci was a tad chewy but very tasty. Next time I would order it medium just as our excellent server had recommended. (Food was really a 4 1/2.) I must add, all who worked there were great.

This restaurant is a "GEM" in a little local strip center far from the maddening crowd. They offer beautiful environment with impeccable service. Our waitress not only knew every nuance of the menu and the specials of the evening, but was also incredibly knowledgeable of their wine list. The Manager, who is the Chef's wife came over to the table and we had a lovely conversation about the Chef's background and the restaurant. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. Especially from someone who has lived and dined in NYC and LA.

This was the second time my wife and I have been here and the experience was great. If they had the option for 4.5 stars, I would have given it that. The ambiance is very romantic and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. Our favorite of the evening was the veal chop. It was out of the ballpark good. We commented yet again on how nice it is to have a restaurant of this caliber here locally and that we plan on making it a regular destination for date night.

The biggest problem is the service. Our waitress wasn't the best and simply came over to take our order and then left. She brought our drinks and forgot the water glasses which we had to remind her. During dinner she didn't fill the glasses once. She also didn't give any good explanation of the specials, other than what was given to her. Listening to the other wait staff tend to the other tables, they were friendly, inviting and making suggestions. Also when food came to the table, such as the Cheese appetizer, they explained what the different cheeses were and went over the entire plate. Ours was simple dropped off. The Appetizer was Ok, the Lobster Bisque was good, and the Cap Steak special was extremely good.
