A word from La Plazuela at La Fonda on the Plaza
La Plazuela was the hotel’s original 1920s patio and it retains that sunlit Old World charm. Skylights flood the dining room with natural light and handsome carved furnishings, artisanal lighting, and our much-loved hand painted windows create a beautiful, inviting room to gather, to dine and to make memories in. The menu was crafted to showcase old favorites with New World influences and authentic New Mexican cuisine, and our award-winning wine list is exceptional. La Plazuela at La Fonda on the Plaza is Santa Fe’s gathering place. Come dine with us!Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Our experience at La Pazuela was delightful. We arrived early for our reservation, and the restaurant was not open yet. We sat in the lobby of the hotel, and enjoyed "people watching". We were seated as soon as the restaurant opened, and were seated next to the fountain. Our wait person was friendly, helpful and efficient. She gave us suggestions about the menu and her ideas provided us with excellent dinners. Our tacos (fish and vegetarian) were excellent; innovative and delicious. We will definitely return the next time that we visit Santa Fe."

  • "I have dined at La Plazuela at La Fonda many times, and the food is always great and the services is always excellent. I would like to be surprised with new menu items more often."

  • "Awesome, custom made fresh guacamole, made right at your table. Nice vegetarian, vegan options with actual thought put into the entree (not just a frozen garden burger or pasta w/o meat !)"

  • "We had breakfast and a dinner at La Plazuela and both meals were satisfactory. Nothing really stands out...I felt as if we were eating in an afterthought, it's hard to explain. If you wanted to try the restaurant I would recommend going for lunch and saving dinner for other locations."

  • "The atmosphere of this historical property was beautiful. The restaurant staff was very personal and professional. My guest and I arrived early for our reservation and seated immediately. Service was timely. My shortcoming of the dining experience was the quality of the 'end-cut' of that nights prime rib special. It was mostly fat and very tough. It was hard o chew and two-thirds was eatable. My guests prime rib was fine. I was asked not to say anything."

  • "This beautiful restaurant is a feast for the eyes and the essence of Santa Fe. It was a busy spring-break Monday night when we were there. There were lots of youngsters about and everyone seemed happy. Just to try something different, I ordered the "Vegan Brisket" but I can't recommend it. It was an experiment, but for the future I'll return to their yummy New Mexican food. Mmmm, fajitas. My husband had salmon which was quite good. We had guacamole prepared table side and that was a nice treat. We'll be back."

  • "This is our favorite Santa Fe dinner. Friendly, beautiful, historic , energitic, delicious, consistent and fiarly priced. We leave feeling so happy to have been to La Plazuela"

  • "This was one of the several visits we made to the restaurant. We were seated promptly as we had reservations. Our waiter, Angel was very attentive and prompt. Dinner: beef filet and prime rib consisting of a dollop of yukon gold mashed and spaghetti squash. The filet was well prepared and flavorful. The prime rib tasted precooked and rewarmed. Advertised as a 12 oz portion consisted of at least 6 oz of fat. The spaghetti squash was drowned in the sauce of the prime rib and lacked flavor on its own merit. A requested "very dry martini" was awash in excessive vermouth and a small serving in a large cocktail glass. Red and white wines were very good but again in small serving sizes. Overall the meal was adequate, but not memorable."

  • "This is a classic and reliable treasure in Santa Fe. The food and service is wonderful in a historic and very southwestern atmosphere. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "This was our first visit and it won't be our last! We were very impressed by the quality of the food, service and ambience! We expected it to be much pricier than it was, being inside the historic La Fonda Hotel, but it was very reasonable. Our waitress was awesome! We found out she'd worked there 28 years! That always speaks well of a restaurant when their staff are so loyal and speak so highly of it. We would certainly recommend it to others!"

  • "We loved the charming Santa Fe decor and ambience, which is located inside of the historic La Fonda hotel. The food was amazing--especially the guacamole (made table side), and the chile rellenos. They were the best we've ever had! The service was friendly and professional. The meal arrived promptly and was prepared exactly to our liking. We can't wait to return here again, to try something new!"

  • "I have been thinking about the appetizer I had every day since I had it! Can't recall the name but it was a polenta and pulled pork (or carnitas) with an amazing sauce. I wish I could replicate it at home but i'm afraid not. Yum...yum...yum (:"

  • "Am new to the area, so I asked around where to take my first out of town guests.....without exception folks told me to take them to La Pazuela at La Fonda........we were not disappointed ......everything was delicious and the "made at your table" guacamole was outstanding. Thank you for a delightful evening."

  • "The food was great (sea bass and chile relleno). We had a nice table next to the fountain in the middle of the dining room. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Really great for a hotel restaurant (we stayed there)"

  • "The room is wonderful, a closed in courtyard with a large fountain in the middle. The tables are well spaced, you don't feel like you are dining with your neighbors as in some Santa Fe restaurants. The food was very good, both the prime rib and cauliflower steak. Maybe not the gourmet level of other establishments but a very good meal, exactly what we were looking for."

  • "I have worked at the La Posada as concierge and not only is the food dreadful, but the staff is is arrogant and rude. The only saving graces are Tom Kellogg and Pauline(operator). If you want a true taste of the historical Santa Fe, Please choose the La Fonda!"

  • "The food was excellent, with a unique and tasty twist to New Mexican cuisine. We started with a spinach salad with pear and hazelnuts. My husband had the Mahi Mahi and I had the filet. Both were excellent as were the side dishes. We even took flan back up to our room for a late night dessert and it was about the best flan I"ve ever had. The ambience was a little bit of everything. We sat by the fountain and trees and it was nice enough to be "romantic", but not stuffy. It was a lovely evening."

  • "LaPlazuela is located in the LaFonda Hotel in Santa Fe. At one time it was a courtyard open air, but is now enclosed with a skylight. It definitely has character and has "romantic" possibilities. The food was average. I had the braised ribs--okay. My wife had the Mahi Mahi and raved about it. I tried the New Mexico pinot noir and it was one of the worst wines I've ever had. Don't mean to sound snobish, but I almost sent it back. I tried a California pinot and it was fine. Very little privacy between tables. It would be nice to have some areas with booths. The fireplace is oddly located outside the restaurant. Few people even know it's there. My wife discovered it and said it would be nice to dine in front of it or at least have a drink."

  • "Our evening was wonderful. Food and service was great. But we had one glitch. We were seated in the rear of the restaurant at a table with 3 chairs and a fabric bench. The bench was uncomfortable because the seat felt like wood. The cushioning was minimal. Also, because of the configuration of the table close to the bench, there was very little leg room, which also proved uncomfortable. The table legs were massive, so very little room for our legs. Hope you will improve this situation for future guests."

  • "Our family had a wonderful Christmas dinner at La Plazuela after a great day of skiing. The fireplace and the ambience were perfect, the food was exceptional and our server was very friendly and nice. It was the perfect place for a Christmas time dinner, especially after walking around the plaza amidst the farolitos and evergreens. The food was just perfect and the price was extremely affordable. We definitely plan on making this a tradition!"

  • "I was a little reluctant to order from the Soutwestern menu because we often have southwestern food in our hometown, but the petite filet with enchiladas took southwestern to another level. We sampled both the green and the red chile sauce and both were superb. A great dining experience at the La Fonda Hotel with excellent professional service."

  • "I nearly always eat a meal at La Plazuela whenI am in Santa Fe. My wife really likes the restaurant and they go out of their way to make your meal a special occasion. The table side guacamole is excellent and obviously very popular. There a couple of vegan entrees is you are so inclined. The filet mignon is amazingly tender and delicious. If you want a specila dining experience try La Plazuela."

  • "In the historic La Fonda, at the end of the Santa Fe Trail, La Plazuela delivers consistently excellent meals in a magical setting. In a former courtyard, you dine under the fairy-light-strewn trees, surrounded by colorful hand-painted glass panes. The filet and enchilada plate was a generous portion so large that I brought half home and enjoyed it for lunch the next day. The filet was perfectly cooked and melt-in-your-mouth tender. One of the best filets in town. I highly recommend La Plazuela for breakfast, lunch and dinner!"

  • "We were staying at the La Fonda hotel, and this restaurant was constantly busy. We decided on dinner there our last night in the hotel and it was the best meal I had the whole trip! It was so good that I broke my no repeat of a restaurant rule and went back for breakfast (which was my second favorite meal). The story of the restaurant and the adorable hand painted windows make it a fun and relaxing place to enjoy any meal. Will definitely be going back the next time I am in town!"

  • "The food is superb, the service is great, but the ambiance is sublime. There are beautifully painted windows throughout. The southwestern style furniture is wonderful. The room is flooded with natural light from many skylights. And there is a fountain in the center of the large, high ceiling room. Just being there is an experience in itself. However, the southwestern style food is simply wonderful. I especially liked going there for breakfast. I highly recommend it, whether or not you are lucky enough to be staying in the hotel. That is a must if one is vacationing in Santa Fe."

  • "I was in Santa Fe for the wedding of the daughter of my close friend. Since there were only 5 of us in attendance for the wedding (including the wedding couple), I wanted to make sure that the group had a memorable place for dinner following the wedding, especially since none of the group, other than myself, had ever been to Santa Fe. La Plazuela at La Fonda was the perfect place. The setting is beautiful, the service (Ian was our waiter) was impeccable and the food excellent. None of the group could get over was a wonderful way it was to end our day. Thank you so much for making a special occasion even better than expected!"

  • "We had been to La Fonda before this time is was early in the evening. We ordered traditional dishes like the pork tamales and new items to us like the mahi mahi and filet mignon. Each dish was wonderful. Please try the poblano chowder we wish we had ordered a bowl instead of a cup."

  • "THE RESTAURANT WAS COLD. WE HAD TO WEAR OUR JACKETS AROUND OUR SHOULDERS. I WAS GIVEN THE END PIECE OF SALMON AND IT WAS SO TOUGH I COULD NOT CUT IT. EVERYTHING WAS SWIMMING IN A POOL OF SAUCE. JUST WAS NOT GOOD. HAD TO FINALLY ASK FOR BREAD. SOME IN OUR PARTY CHOSE TO SPLIT A SALAD. WAS NOT DONE FOR US IN THE KITCHEN AS IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE IN MOST RESTAURANTS. I COULD GO ON BUT THIS IS HOW IT WENT."
