  • "The place got good reviews and was deemed romantic so I took my wife there for our wedding anniversary. The wait staff was good, but slammed. The place was packed with groups and so was very noisy. The food was just ok. I asked for an ingrediant to be removed and instead it was covered in it. The waiter did not charge me for my meal (by his own doing, I said nothing, and that was nice), but it was ruined by the abundance of salt. Wine list was good. Cocktails looked fun but we did not order any. Getting a cab after took 20 mins when they said 5-10."

  • "We had a group of 7 and needed a special set up. The staff was over the top in getting a set up that worked well. After a lengthy pre dinner talk, dinner was ordered. During this whole time the staff was fabulous. Couldn't give them higher praise. Our first course came. Great Caesar salads and house salads. Fresh and flavorful. Then came the main course. Most of us had pasta. The pasta had been cooked nicely, al dente. When it hit the table it was luke-warm at best and had a film on the pasta indicative of sitting for a long time and heat lamps being the major source of warmth. No Parmesan cheese was offered. The one person who ordered the fish stated it was excellent and well prepared and HOT. This was on a quiet Monday night."

  • "We came for a Mothers' Day dinner. 2 of us had the swordfish special, which was not great, but OK. 2 ordered burgers medium rare, and the came out burned and dry. The appetizers all came with the same "aioli", which was pale orange, and only tasted of mayonnaise. Pomodoro pasta was overcooked and mushy. The only one truly happy with his meal was the one with the pepperoni pizza, (which at $17 should be good!) The kids were very gracious, and said that the restaurant must have used up all of their good food and service during brunch."

Food was above average but environment, staff and location of the restaurant made the evening. I hate being stressed when making dinner reservations so this was very smooth. Weighing on food, staff, location, environment and customer service, I would ABSOLUTELY come back again. "

  • "We went to La Pastaia around 9pm on a weekend night and the place was almost empty. The ambiance has the potential to be good as the restaurant has a quiet elegance about it on first glance. Unfortunately their service could use some more training or attention -- they only had one server on and he was not really able to attend to the three tables in the restaurant effectively. Pasta is quite good; the salad had some brown leaves in it but aside from that was ok; bread is good; dessert was good. Flaws can be summarized as: stemless wine glasses (!) and inattentive service. These can readily be fixed and La Pastaia could be a go-to place for a pizza and a glass of wine OR for an elegant evening. But some improvements are needed to get there."

  • "We really like La Pastaia. It's in the Hotel DeAnza and I could be wrong about this, but during the week it tends to be low-key unless there's an event at the arena. So for those of us who actually live in downtown San Jose, it's a gem: the food is reliably very good, the service is excellent, and on a weekday night it can be wonderfully peaceful. My husband took me there last Wednesday for my birthday. I had to work and I wanted to go out, but wanted to stay close to home and at the end of a long day I wanted someplace quiet. La Pastaia was perfect. Birthday or not, the tiramisu is not to be missed!"

The fresh salmon was overcooked, dry and tasteless. Overall, the meal was disappointing. However, our waiter was courteous and efficient, as were the servers."

  • "La Pastaia has been in downtown SJ for years and we decided to give it a try for a date night on a night when the sharks were not playing. We had a lovely time. The service was excellent from start to finish - server, bus/service staff, manager etc....really noticeable. Food was very good, not great but a nice ambiance and great service made it a really great night."

  • "Have gone here for many dinners on nights that there are Sharks games, ever since they moved to San Jose. This was absolutely the SLOWEST SERVICE I have ever experienced. Every night I've been there on a Shark's game night it's been busy but they have handled it very well. Lame excuse how lamb chops take longer. My guest was a chef and he said that they take 5 minutes to do rare which he had ordered."

  • "Came here to celebrate my friend's birthday, and was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to find any vegan offerings. I ended up having broccoli rabe, chard and green beans, all three of which were delicious. My husband had the sausage pizza, and the birthday girl had the fish special. The food was delicious, including the pine nut marzipan treat that was delivered with a candle. We'll definitely be back."

  • "This was our first time to La Pastaia and we enjoyed the decor, the service from our waiter was excellent - he made recommendations on the wine and also on the entrees (I was considering the ravioli, but he honestly told me that it was frozen and didn't recommend it since all the other pastas are made at the restaurant). Also, the food was very good, and we will definitely be back. Was on the louder side, so not really a romantic setting. But we went to the Hedley Club after dinner which was also very nice - live jazz band."

  • "Dined twice recently before performances at SAP Center. On both occasions, it seemed that most of the early dinner crowd were also on their way to a rock n roll show. The restaurant was noisy, which goes along with being busy. But the service was poor; poorly timed delivery. One of my guests received her glass of wine, while another had to wait for the server's next pass by... Spaghetti and meatballs dish was tepid, and had clearly spent time under the warming lights. Risotto was glue-y. Steak was well prepared, but nothing special. I will be looking for a new place for dinner before the shows."

  • "went on a Sunday night, we stopped in the bar first and had a really great Bloody Mary. The bar is beautiful and very quiet since it was early. The server bordered on rude and didn't seem interested in offering much in the way of information. The starter salad was excellent, lamb chops were good, but the side of couscous was bland and nearly cold. asparagus was hard and not particularly tasty but since it's not in season yet I don't hold that against them. Except why not offer a seasonal vegetable? the marzipan tart was nearly inedible, but the lemon sorbet was very good. The swordfish special was fine, but the accompanying rice was bland. we each had a glass of good enough Pinot noir, but one of them had quite a bit of sediment."

  • "This was the only nice restaurant in downtown San Jose that had reservations available for 11 people at the time and date that I needed. I wasn't sure what we'd get, but everyone loved it. The service was great, the food wonderful. The ambiance was nice, cozy and comfortable. My mom had the sword fish, dad the short rib, aunt the pork chop, and I tried the lamb shank. Everyone loved their meals! It's at the De Anza Hotel, and some of us were early so we waited in the lobby which was quite comfortable. So happy to have found this place, we will definitely be coming back!"

  • "My wife and I spent had Valentine's Day dinner at La Pastaia and it was excellent. I had the swordfish with mussels and polenta from the special Valentine's menu, it was outstanding. The swordfish was cooked perfectly (not a hint of being dry) the mussels were fresh and the polenta under the swordfish stayed crispy to the last bite. The wait staff was always there when we needed them on what was probably the busiest night of the year. Now we have to go back and try everything on the regular menu!"

  • "This is a great place to have dinner before a Sharks game or concert at SAP Center. The food, atmosphere, service and location are all terrific. We shared the Brussels Sprouts as the appetizer and I had the smoked chicken and chard fettuccine and loved it, but could eat less than half of it. Could be shared. The Hedley club next door is also a fun place to get a drink after your event. Bon Appetit!"

  • "Since we had 7:30 theatre tickets, we requested an early seating around 5:30 and were warmly welcomed. Our server was most pleasant and professional, even offering me a couple of complimentary sips of Italian white wines from the by-the-glass list before I made a final choice. Our meals arrived promptly, piping hot--trout over greens with a side of crispy onion rings for my wife, glazed salmon over fennel for me--and both were most appealing. So was dessert, an Italian chocolate torte with raspberry sauce. By the time we left at 6:45, the dining room was filling up, and, as usual, the Hadley Club bar was packed. LaPastaia exceeded our expectations on all counts; we'll be back for sure."

We were going to be late for a concert and had to eat really fast to make it on time, so we didn't get to enjoy it at all.   • "Our group of 8 booked an early dinner before a downtown concert. The restaurant was empty! We had the total attention of our waitress; service was therefore top-notch, and she even split the bill for us 4 ways. The specials were outstanding and fairly priced: a cup of seafood soup, quite delicate, with notes of saffron, followed by a light, crab-meat spaghetti. Also, the sturgeon served over kale and savory sweet potato with a ginger sauce reduction really hit the spot."

  • "This was a special evening out with my daughter just prior to attending the Justin Timberlake Concert. The food was great, the atmosphere fun (so many ladies around us also excited about seeing Justin Timberlake) but the best part of the entire evening was the service. Our server, Robear, was attentive, right there when we needed him, and was so much fun!! He not only served us but he also entertained us with a few funny quips and at one point a brief song. The next time I eat here, and I will eat here again, I intend to ask for Robear!"
